November 11, 2007

Well, Carl really outdid himself today, answering a slew of fan questions for today’s guest Q&A blog. Rather than put up with me yammering on about my laidback Sunday and Lulu’s bizarre yoga-esque sleeping positions, let’s head straight to the guest mailbag -

But not before checking out today’s pics: Rare and valuable never-before-published pictures of Carl Binder, a gentle reminder of what may have been: Monty the Radioactive Gopher, and, of course, Lulu’s bizarre yoga-esque sleeping positions.

Today’s guest mailbag hosted by Carl Binder -

Teyilia writes: “What (or who) made you guys think of getting Teyla really mad?”

Carl: At the start of season four, I wanted to do two stories: 1) A heist (which became Lifeline), and 2) A Teyla episode. But a different kind of Teyla episode. I wanted to really shake her up, show her in a way we haven't seen her before. Luckily, Joe and Paul had an idea for an arc that would involve taking Teyla down a very dark course, which I loved. I'm a fan of putting our characters into moral dilemmas, forcing them way out of their comfort zone. So I was able to start this journey for her in Missing.

Ditraveler writes: “I, like Ronon, have no clue what Sheppard and Rodney were talking about, so my question is what was that all about? And what made you come up with that particular bit?”

Carl: I love the old Batman TV show. I try to include references to it whenever I can, especially in the Sheppard/McKay banter. This particular discussion came out of an actual lunchtime discussion Joe Mallozzi and I had about the various villains of Batman and who played them.

ChevronSeven writes: “Didn't Shelley Winters play Ma Parker?”

Carl: Yes she did.

Promogirl writes: “You mentioned that Jewel did a lot of her own stunts in this episode. How much of the rope bridge sequence was her?”

Carl: Quite a lot. The entire walk. She was cabled for protection, the wire attached to a harness under her coat, coming out through her coat arm and attached to the bridge's handrail. We later painted out the wire in visual effects. The fall was her double, as well as Rachel's double pulling her up.

Promogirl also writes: “And how much did Rachel love being such a badass in this episode? I imagine she was relishing it to the hilt.”

Carl: She, she was very excited about it.

ThornyRose writes: “Do we see the Athosian question resolved this season, and if so, when?”

Carl: Revisited, yes. Resolved, stay tuned.

Blaine Nielsen writes: “I was wondering what was your favorite part that was written and executed well on the screen?”

Carl: Obviously the rope bridge sequence was done as well (if not better) as anything I could have hoped for. But for me, two other moments stand out. 1) The circular saw-sized shiriken that stabs into the tree in front of Jewel at the start of the first Bola Kai fight. Or, rather, pops out of the tree. It happens so fast it looks like it was thrown. A common gag in film (and magic shows), but it amazes how well it works. 2) The dirt creature. Director Andy Mikita and I had many, many discussions about this thing, and it was the source of great stress for Andy in his quest to make it look good. Our Production Designer, James Robbins, first brought in the infamous "Monty the Radioactive Gopher" drawing, and from there it was refined and gooped up to become the underground squid. In the end, we were all very pleased with how well it turned out.

Stargazer writes: “What were Rachel and Jewel actually eating? It looked thoroughly disgusting, but maybe that was just the power of suggestion.”

Carl: No, you're right, it was disgusting. Some kind of edible tofu-like concoction. We toyed with various consistencies until we arrived at the goopy mess you saw on screen. We did make sure beforehand that Rachel and Jewel were both okay with eating it. I'm a big Survivor fan, so of course I had to include a reference to it in the scene.

Erin Anderson writes: “Teyla's fight scene's were awesome. How many of those did she actually participate in? Or did the pregnancy preclude her from filming any of them?”

Carl: We had to be very, very cautious with Rachel during the filming of this episode, so her stunt double was relied upon more than usual.

Lizzyshoe writes: “Can I just say, the cannibal snacking on a lollipop was BLOODY BRILLIANT! My friends and I had a gooood laugh over that. Who's idea was it anyway?”

Carl: I thought bringing lollipops for the Athosian kids would demonstrate Keller's compassion, get us off to a good start with her. When the Bola Kai found her duffel bag, I thought it would be funny if we later saw one of them with a lollipop in his mouth, so I wrote it into the scene. I'm glad you agree.

Sulien writes: “Regarding the team taking incoming arrow fire, how was that shot? Were the arrows put in digitally in post production, or were they on wires?”

Carl: It was a combination of digital arrows (the ones that whipped by dangerously close) and hand thrown arrows (the ones that look hand thrown). I liked the CG arrows better.

Dee in South Africa writes: “Joe, I'm sure, can be really irritating at times. How many times in the last year have you thought about killing him?”

Carl: 7. Sadly, there are laws in Canada prohibiting murder.

Anonymous #1 writes: “Was Rachel's pregnancy the reason that "Missing" was written, or was a 'Thelma and Louise' episode already on the agenda?”

Carl: Missing was already well in the works before Rachel's pregnancy. We then figured a way to write it into the season arc we were already working on for Teyla.

Paula writes: “And whose evil idea was it to end the episode before Keller says what's wrong? Was this a Mallozzi move? Or are is Binder going Dark Side on us?”

Carl: That was a Mallozzi/Mullie decision.

Wraithfodder writes: “A totally inane question, but are you guys watching too many TV ads? We got Ambien mentioned in "Doppelganger," and now Restless Leg Syndrome in "Missing"? I feel like the ads are saturating the show (please, please, no Cialis!)”

Carl: I just needed another funny ailment for McKay. We've already gone through so many. And this seemed like something McKay would think he had. But now that you mention Cialis...

Michelle writes: “Did Jewel Staite play Keller in "Missing" as you imagined she would, and if not, how was her take on it different from what you'd imagined?”

Carl: She played it exactly as I hoped she would. A total pro, and a class act all the way.

Pauline writes: “When you wrote Missing and decided to include the rope bridge, which was frightening just to look at, did you think- What can I put in to the story frighten the bejesus out of Teyla and Keller?”

Carl: I just wanted something that would frighten the bejesus out of Keller. I too have a fear of heights, so when we were scouting locations (on a snowy day, which melted before shooting) and I stood at the edge of that canyon, I pretty much reacted the way Keller did when she saw it.

Anonymous #2 writes: “If Joe gave you free range and you could write an episode for any female character in Stargate history (Atlantis or SG1) who would it be and why?”

Carl: I really like Fran, from Be All My Sins Remember'd.

Arctic Goddess writes: “Joe has told us why and how he got into writing. I'd love to hear your history about how you ended up where you are.”

Carl: I went to USC's film school, then worked as a page at NBC while trying to launch my writing career. While there I got work as a production assistant on the show Punky Brewster. The showrunner allowed me to write an episode in season two, which helped me get an agent, who helped me land my first staff job on the CBS show Adderly. I then went to work on a show in Vancouver called Neon Rider. There were two writers on staff -- me and Brad Wright. He went off to develop SG-1, and I went off to co-write Pocahontas for Disney, then work on the last three seasons of Dr Quinn, Medicine Woman. After that I created the show Little Men for the PAX network and developed Mysterious Ways for NBC/PAX. Brad and I always kept in touch and wanted to work together again, so he called me when Atlantis got off the ground and asked if I wanted to be a part of it.

Morjana writes: “Is Keller a civilian doctor (ie., not a military doctor).”

Carl : Civilian.

Vvv0472 writes: “Do you speak french?”

Carl: No.

Amelie: “What's Joseph Mallozzi really like?”

Carl: Sweet, compassionate, sensitive and most of all, forgiving. Loves the Beatles and the movie E.T.

Amelie also writes: “What do you think of his obsession to chocolates, food, dogs and super villains.”

Carl: I don't have a sophisticated palate (cheeseburgers and beer for me), so I applaud his patient efforts to refine my tastes. But I still refuse to eat foi gras (or however you spell it). And lamb. And 100 per cent chocolate. As for the dogs, I am president of the Lulu fan club.

Anonymous #3 writes: “Will this have serious consequences in the way it's going to affect Teyla's relationship with the rest of her team members and her role as part of the team?”

Carl: Yes. Stay tuned.

Gatedialer write: “Whomever had the idea to cast Danny Trejo in an SGA episode is a frakking genius!”

Carl: That would be director Andy Mikita. He suggested Danny, and the rest of us immediately agreed.

Emily writes: “How was Chippewa Falls, WI decided upon as Dr. Keller's hometown? Are characters' hometowns ever picked out of thin air or is there usually some sort of reason/connection to the particular city/region?”

Carl: I wanted her to be from a small town, so I originally chose Blaine, Missouri, the town from the movie Waiting For Guffman. But it didn't clear legally. So then I chose Chippewa Falls, because that's where Annie Hall is from (my favorite movie).

Vecturist writes: “How long do some of the fight scenes typically take to choreograph? How much of the 'fight' description is provided by the writer/director versus the translation of the stunt crew?”

Carl: Our stunt coordinator, Bam Bam, did exceptional work on this one. The first big fight (featuring Teyla swinging that badass axe) is pretty much exactly as scripted, but the second one (during which Teyla is captured) Bam Bam had more free reign to improvise.

Dori writes: “Why with your good looks and your wonderful sensitive personality, you didn't go into acting? And who would be your favourite author?”

Carl: Perhaps I can reccommend a good eye doctor for you. As for my favorite author: Mark Twain.

Somebody writes: “What is your favorite SGA episode and why?”

Carl: I would have to say McKay and Mrs. Miller. Great script, great directing, great acting. I'm a fan of the smaller, character relationship pieces. I thought everything came together on that one, with a very emotional ending.

Wonder if you could answer a question Joe? In Carl's answers(thanks to him for that by the way) he mentioned that some place called Blaine, in Missouri, didn't get legal clearance to be used in the show.

Firstly, why didn't it get legal clearance and secondly, why on earth would you need clearance in the first place? Are you really unable to just use the name of a town in an episode?

Thanks to Carl for answering or questions! And thanks to you for turning over your blog to let him!

Those pics of Lulu today made me laugh out loud. Not as much as the freakish gopher but close...

Have you ever listened to Radio Disney? Are the Genii characters Sora and Kolya going to be back? Whatever happened to Sora anyways? Is Michael (Wraith) going to be back? Since Rodney plays piano, when are we going to see him to that? Do any of the characters (besides Teyla) have children?

Thanks a million for the answers Carl!

Joe, Thanks for posting my comment! I have a couple of questions. 1. Do you think you will ever do a Stargate Con in Australia? 2. What is your favourite movie? What is your favourite book?

If Carl's the President of Lulu's fan club, can I be the Treasurer? That dog is seriously ace.

Also, can I be really cheeky and ask to have tomorrow's blog dedicated to me? It's my birthday you see! Finally legal to drink in my country of origin. *Finally*.

And, to round things off - thank you kindly Carl for the mailbaggy goodness; much appreciated.

Yay! Thanks Carl! I loved Missing. The character development was brilliant for both Keller and Teyla. I'm really looking forward to the rest of the season.

Hey Joe... just thought you might be interested in my babies.

Count the toes! Cool, huh?

I love the gopher!

Any new info on Continuum that you can give us (like pictures or something)? Thanks.

I originally chose Blaine, Missouri

I'm kinda glad that didn't work out, actually. Cool reference, but Jewel has a noticeable Canadian accent in SGA. She doesn't really sound like she's from Wisconsin either, but there's no way she's from rural Missouri!

Thanks for all the answers Carl!

Great Q&A from Carl! Missing was yet another fantastic episode! One reason I liked it so much is because it focused on two characters, not just one. (I've always like the team-centered episodes more.) Great job to Carl and Jewel for making Keller a "fraidy-cat" but not in a "I'm screaming every five seconds" way.

Does Lulu have an agent and will she ever get a guest spot on SGA? With all the attention she's getting recently I expect her to have her own show before long. :)

Hope we see Carl back again. Thanks Joe. It's great to have a place where guys like you, who bring us such a great show, will interact with the fans.

Keep it up:)

Hiya Joe,

I just wanna tell you how much I love Lulu’s bizarre yoga-esque sleeping positions photos... It reminded me of my dog Michael's sleep positions. Just too damn adorable... I miss him so much...

And Thank you Mr. Binder for Q&A..

thanks, carl, for stopping by! :D you're not quite as deranged as joe, but you're funny too! ;)

lulu is deranged, though. i don't think i've ever seen any animal sleep like that. hmm... maybe lulu isn't *just* a dog? (at first i thought the fourth piccy was lulu on crack)

anyhoo, i'm super excited about 'the seer' for friday! looks like i'll get a good dose of sam in that ep. :D :D

Poor Lulu nothing sadder than an intoxicated canine.

I myself have often come back from a night of bacchanalian delights.

Only to wake up in the morning in the same position as Lulu.

Upside down on the sofa with a string of drool delicately culminating in a small but beautifully formed pool of saliva on the floor next to my head.

Ah they are the Kodak moments… that my kids later blackmail me with.

Please thank Carl for his time in answering our questions and of course thank you for letting Carl…well you get the gist of it.
End of 2am rant.

Thank you Mr. Carl Binder for taking the time to answer our questions! And of course, thank you again for "Missing"'s great script!

Now, Joe, you do realize that what Carl said about you basically destroyed your villain-persona, don't you? What are you planning to do about this?

Poor Lulu, the mean man with the flash camera won't let her sleep! You have been killing me lately with the cuteness of the dogs, not that I'm complaining.

I have been checking out the breed characteristics of pugs online and I have a question for you regarding your dogs, if you wouldn't mind answering? Unfortunately, every site I've checked out states that pugs tend to have a lot of health issues and I was wondering if your pugs have had many health problems. I've been considering getting a dog now that I have a fenced yard, but I don't want to get a dog that I will have to mourn too soon (I kind of tend to fall apart when I lose a pet). Your insight would be greatly appreciated.

Neep said...

Sally is right. You have got to stop giving that puppy crack.

Loved the Lulu shots. Can't say that I've seen any of my dogs do that, but I have seen some serious poses with my cats.

Message for Carl:

Thanks so much for that episode; it was amazing on a lot of different levels.

I just wanted to tell you that I was innocently puttering around at home the other night when an ad for some restless-leg-syndrome drug came on TV. In the ad, it said to contact your doctor if, after taking this miracle drug, you feel any compulsions, especially any related to gambling and/or sex.

So my question is, season five? McKay on the Vegas strip? Yes?

Hi Joe,

Question: how come Joe F never takes his shirt off on a episode anymore?
Does his wife not like him doing it on the show for some reason or is it his own choice?

If it has to do with the squee factor we can handle it.

Oops! I've missed the Q&A. I was away on another exciting fun-filled weekend up to the remodel house.

You'll be glad to know I had an excellent time hitting my elbow with the toe end of a hammer, playing with bits of your beloved insulation, and slicing my finger with a paint scraper.

To round the weekend off nicely, my vehicle was struck by a box that flew out of a truck ahead of me. It nearly shattered my passenger's window, leaving my dad wide-eyed and crouching with fear.

However, the event wouldn't have been complete without the nice set of dings and scuffs it left on my passenger's side door.

The fun never stops D=.

Now if I could only learn to sleep anywhere and in any position like Lulu has...

CONGRATULATIONS on Missing! Truly one of the finest SGA episodes ever made. I have to say that I was starting to give up on the Teyla character because she seemed rather two dimensional at best - but this season it seems like you all have given her the depth she deserves. Not to mention - this was an awesome "girl power" episode. While Sheppard, Ronon and Rodney still had to "save the day" so to speak - we see Teyla in the powerful light for which her character was intended (methinks). THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!!

Anonymous said...

I'm sorry but I have to agree with all of the posters wondering what on earth a whiny, precious, little princess like Keller is doing in a place like Atlantis. And before you go jumping to your usual conclusions let me add that I like Jewel very much as an actor and was very much looking forward to seeing her in Atlantis, Kaylee is one of my all time favourite female sci fi characters and I enjoyed her work in Da Vinci's Inquest. Also I was no particular fan of Becket, I could take him or leave him and wasn't unduly concerned by his departure.

I am however concerned about what possible rationalisation you and your writers could have for including a character like Keller in the role she is in. The experiences of the SGC over the past 11 years would have made it perfectly clear that a job like hers was not for the faint hearted nor for someone so easily discomforted by out of the ordinary occurrences.

You have blithely dismissed people's concerns about the militarisation of Atlantis inherent in replacing a civilian leader with a military one and yet in an area where it would seem to be an advantage to have a military person - an experienced, served-in-the-field medical officer - you instead give us a girl who looks likely to jump on her chair and shriek like a 60's sitcom wife at the sight of a mouse. It certainly makes no sense that I can see. Far better to bring in a new civilian leader and a new military doctor.

Anonymous said...

Great job to Carl and Jewel for making Keller a "fraidy-cat" but not in a "I'm screaming every five seconds" way.

Really? The non-screaming 5 seconds must have been when I was out of the room. Or do you not count, whining, whimpering and crying?

Because he refused to take his shirt off during Doppleganger because of the squeeing and then threw himself onto a bunk looking like a bored 10 year old in Travellers!!! I'm surprised he didnt hear the squeeing from all over the world! LOL LOL LOL We're gonna squee no matter what so next time make him take his shirt off Joe? pretty please?

Loved Missing. Thanks, Carl, for a wonderful episode (and for the Q&A).

I don't know what the fans' opinions are in other websites, because I only check this blog and Livejournal, but if what I've seen at LJ is any indication, Missing is getting an overwhelming number of positive reviews. I've just read more than 50 positive reviews, only 1 negative, and 1 partially positive (for Teyla) and negative (for Keller).

Anyway, I loved both Teyla and Keller in this episode. I still miss Carson, but I'm loving Keller. Kudos to the writers and Jewel.

Joe, can you tell us when we can expect a confirmation about the season 5 cast line-up? Or can you already tell us that it'll be the same as in season 4?

Bonjour Joe,

I believe, Chelsea, the wonderfully gutless 'won't put a name to their post Anonymous' was talking about me. I'm touched, truly...

I posted here a while back saying I wasn't too impressed with hearing about personal disagreements between producers/actors on this blog. I stand by that - and that goes for ANY actor, not just JF, thank you very much. However, I did express myself rather emotionally, for which there isn't any excuse, well, other than hormones.

Anonymous , I will defend ANY actor/producer/director who is dissed by anyone on a public forum, even if an actor etc.. isn't my favourite. I don't think it's appropriate to cast aspersions on anyone on a public forum in that way. I will report any poster on the forum I visit to the moderators who is insulting to ANY actor or member of the Stargate production team.

Joe has never been disrespectful to Torri, and I was annoyed to read such utter crap in the other Anonymous' post. If you think that's being a posting officer, when it's called expressing your opinion about a blog post here...which is what the point of blog comments are...then, fine go back to your little hovel and carry on stirring things up.

As for pot and kettle? Nowhere in my post to Joe a few weeks ago was I rude or insulting to him, unlike the poster I was responding to, and I just expressed my concern and disappointment politely - something rather cowardly Anonymous posters don't seem able to do, hence the anonymity. I would post in concern about hearing about any personal stuff about any actors here, so to say I wouldn't be defending other actors is completely inaccurate. I also wasn't defending Joe M. He's perfectly capable of defending himself, I think. I'm honestly tired of reading such utter rubbish about how awful the producers have been to poor Torri.

As I said before, SGA is a business and it's not for us to know what goes on behind the scenes. Acting is a tough world to work in, and I'd assume all the actors know that.

Can't go wrong with the Beatles.

As for 'Missing' I thought it was a pretty cool episode, but there is a debate raging about whether or not Teyla was justified in killing the Bola Kai. A friend of mine thinks they were intending only to capture Teyla and Keller as they did later in the show, but I contend that they would have killed and/or eaten them had they remained in captivity. So my question is, was Teyla too trigger-happy?

The theme of SG1 is to sent military personnel on potentially dangerous missions that would generally last for short periods of time. Everyone was properly trained, armed and realized that this could be their last mission.

The theme of Atlantis is to send highly qualified civilians to a secured city guarded by a military contingent. Initially they would not be able to return home for a very long time. The civilians would be selected for their skill and ability to live in a relatively isolated environment. They probably had no military training and would not be expected to participate in military operations.

The parts in “Missing” were written for two different people with different backgrounds (secure versus constant danger) and I thought they did a great job.

As to the whining .. I know a number of people that whine about doing something they really don't want to do and then step up and do it. I would rather be with someone like that then someone who says they will be brave and do it and then don't

So for me it kudos for the writing and the actors performances. Keller can whine as much as she wants as long as she gets the job done.

Your secret is out! :)

I stopped by gateworld and was looking at some of the pictures. Midway looks amazingly exciting, but reminds me of a question I've been meaning to ask.

Q: Why don't the Atlantis team use Zats?

sorry for the the multi-post but I had to say. Danny Trejo completely took me by surprise, never expected to see him. Anytime you can bring him back you should.

you wrote the 10th episode, itd be a good way for people to ask if they have any questions

Hey Joe,

I know you are probably tired with all the ratings talk, but someone has to stick it to the former fans who celebrate when the show falls in ratings. Do you know if TR and Missing saw anymore upticks from "Travelers"? Also, did you read that article about the C3 report? Apparently Atlantis is in the top 5 of programs that retain commercial ratings for the age 25 to 54 age demo. That's gotta be good news right there. Season 4 has just been amazing so far, and I want it to be successful as well as great in quality. Thanks!

Hi Joe -

I just read an article which stated many showrunners are supporting the writers strike because many of them started out (and continue) to write for their shows. Sounds a lot like you. Will you give your opinion on the strike? I know it's the American union (not Canadian), and I know you've said that it won't have much impact on SGA, but I would be interested on your viewpoint. Personally, I'm on the writers side.

Thanks

Hi Joe,

Please tell Carl thank you for dropping by and answering that slew :)

You understand the anxious questions about Daniel guesting on Atlantis right? I mean the 'maybe's' when people asked about it in season 4 led to bitter disspointment. I know you were just being honest and thank you for your patience but people can't help hoping especially when they consider the character an important part of their Stargate experience. We havn't had to suffer a full year with out one of the main character from SG1 before and of course it has to be Daniel thats missed out.

Wow. The only other thing I've ever seen lie in such weird, can't-possibly-be-comfortable-but-apparently-are positions is my cat Fudge.

My lovely husband was kind enough (or shall we say, values his life enough) to buy me a nice big box of Thorntons Continental chocolates for my birthday today - I'd send you a few for you to try but a) you're not a fan of milk chocolate so it'd be a waste and b) they're mine, all mine!! :D

Happy Monday to ya. Just because.

Thank you so much Mr. B and, of course, Mr. M. for answering our questions!

I have one that's not episode specific. Is McKay really hypoglycaemic, or is that more psychosomatic?

Thanks again! I always find this blog enjoyable and refreshing - kind of like ice cream sandwiches....

Please pass on my thanks to Carl for his responses.

Hey, have you read the article entitled People of Color in Sci-Fi: Fall 2007. Stargate: Atlantis is mentioned but states the show has “Aliens-of-Color Only”.

Thoughts?

Hi Joe!

Finally got caught up with Missing and the blog. I think the Nov 11 pics of Lulu are beyond adorable! :)

Thanks to Carl for answering questions - I think it's very cool to get some inside info - without all of those staining spoilers. ;)

Please pass along a "WooHoo" to Carl for his work on Adderly. I loved that show, and still have a few eps on videotape. Still playable after 20 yrs! And I still mark my miscellaneous folders "Misc. Affairs!"

I really enjoyed Missing. I need to watch it again (and again). I love to see a woman buddy ep. Nothing against all of the guy buddy eps/shows/movies that exist, but this was refreshing. A male version would have been Ronon & S1 Rodney.

I was a little sad at first that Keller was not very strong, but it's more realistic for a young civilian doctor from a small town to be afraid than to take it all in stride. And I saw her grow and step up to the situation as it progressed. It took strength to lie to the BIG SCARY ALIEN CANNIBAL when she was being beaten and interrogated. (Not a diss, but Dr. Lee gave it up when in the same situation, so +1 to Keller.)

I think Keller is a great character and have enjoyed "meeting" her over this season.

Teyla just so totally rocked. Strong, smart, focused - that is our Teyla. I wasn't disappointed that she developed an intimate relationship with a childhood friend. It could've been a one-time thing or a long-term affair. Who knows? (You, Joe!)

I also wasn't disappointed that she kept it quiet. Some things are so precious you want to keep to yourself. She took some teasing for allegedly liking one of the new Marines at the end of M&MM and for having feelings for someone in Sunday, so I can see why she would keep this quiet.

Gotta go work on another aspect of my SGA fandom.

Rock on!

To those (presumabley female) seeking less of Shep clothed - this is scifi use your imagination. Whist I agree JF is unquestionably very attractive the imagination is a VERY powerful tool. To the poster who declared John Shephard was her happy place, I think it would be quite crowded. Here in Australia we are still working our way through SG1 season 10, Atlantis season 3 has recently been released on DVD so at least I can watch that.
My first post - I love this blog it is lots of fun, the insight about the show and the creative process makes me appreciate it so much more. Many thanks to everyone who contributes.

Hello Mr. M. NaniWahine here.
Is Carl pulling our leg? ;) Haven't seen Missing yet, but quite honestly, I'm still warming up to Keller. Very slowly. I wanted to ask whether there are any plans of bringing Dr. Carson Beckett back permanently in Season 5? If not, what can the fans do to change your mind?

I really enjoy the episode Q&As you've been offering in your blog. I loved "Missing," and it was great to read Carl Binder's answers to fan questions. Something Carl said that I really liked:

I just wanted something that would frighten the bejesus out of Keller. I too have a fear of heights, so when we were scouting locations (on a snowy day, which melted before shooting) and I stood at the edge of that canyon, I pretty much reacted the way Keller did when she saw it.

Keller's reaction to the bridge - and her reaction to pretty much all of the freaky and/or scary things she had to deal with - I just loved it all.

I mean, I love Teyla beyond words, and I love that she and other characters totally kick ass. But what's cool about Keller (to me) is that finally we get a character who isn't a mad genius (i.e. Rodney, Sam) or an adrenaline junkie (nearly everyone else), a character who doesn't either have hysterics or else take the weirdness in stride. Keller is extremely intelligent and competent, but also very, very normal. I LOVE that.

What I especially liked about the way her character was integrated into the story was that I was reminded of the alienness that comes along with, you know, being in another galaxy. That sounds kind of dumb, but it's actually easy to forget, in some ways. Rodney does react with fear and disgust or whatever when he encounters weird alien stuff, but his reactions are so big that I tend to be paying more attention to them than to what he's reacting to. (Which is not a slam - I love Rodney and his hysterics.) Sheppard et al, on the other hand, just sort of roll with whatever is going on, which makes the alienness somehow less alien. (And again, not a slam - I love those elements of those characters' personalities, and I would think that for a mission like that it makes sense to send mostly that kind of person.)

On the other hand, Keller doesn't roll with things, but then she also doesn't totally spaz. When faced with alien squid guts for dinner, she just says "hah, um, no, yuck," until she gets hungry enough to try it. When faced with fear of heights + a rope bridge over a deep chasm, she hesitates, she gets scared, she...well, she acts like I would probably act, really. And then she tackles it.

Her reactions, to me, underscore the alienness of the environment, rather than drowning it out or brushing it off. This is really the first episode where I've really felt how Teyla is from a different culture, another planet, another galaxy; and felt how the planets they visit are alien. I've seen it plenty; this time I just plain felt it. Keller very succinctly allowed that aspect to shine through.

And I'm not trying to say that I don't think the show illustrates alienness well in general. Rether, I think that what happens is that as a fan of sci fi and fantasy, I'm so familiar with that sort of thing that, a bit like Sheppard and Co., I tend to take it in stride. Love it to pieces, get a thrill from it, just totally eat it up; but also possibly forget to remember exactly how not-Western-Civilization-human are the things I'm seeing. So it's a different kind of treat when a character like Keller comes along and stirs up that forgotten flavor.

Anyway. Many thanks to Carl Binder for a great episode, and for answering fan questions so interestingly; and also thanks to Jewel Staite for her evocative characterization of Keller. And of course thanks, Joe, for your blog of fun-ness and discussion and whatnot. :)
