Finally, the wait is over. Season four of Atlantis kicks off tonight at 10:00 p.m. on SciFi with our BIG premiere: Adrift. It seems like just yesterday that David Nykl was stomping around the production offices in his space suit in preparation for the huge chasm/meteor sequence. Six months ago! Has it really been that long? The short answer is - yes, you idiot, it HAS been that long. As Brad Wright is fond of reminding us: “Art takes time”. Or, in the words of the great Peter DeLuise “Arttakestimegotit!”. Yep, art does take time. But visual effects take A LOT longer - and this particular episode is jam packed full of spectacular sequences. Yes, lots of stunning visuals, but also a very tight, suspenseful script by Martin Gero, and some wonderfully nuanced performances by our cast, newcomers, and guest stars. My episode highlights: Asteroids, the jump, Ronon’s touching expression of gratitude, the Sheppard-McKay clash and McKay’s surprisingly defiant “I’m not going to do it, no.” Your post-viewing thoughts?

Hey, they were shooting just outside my office window today, on the other side of the security fence where the Carson Beckett campaign held their much-publicized piper demonstration and the very spot the motion-detecting laser systems torched those curious fans back in season two.
By the way, I’m going to keep the polls open until late Sunday night for the second month vote for Joe’s Books of the Month Club. So far, we’ve got a real barn-burner. In the scifi category, Niven and Pournelle’s The Legacy of Heriot leads William C. Dietz’s Legion of the Damned 2 vote to1, while in the fantasy category, Donaldson’s Lord Foul’s Bane and Melville’s Perdido Street Station are all knotted up at 1 vote a piece. I have a feeling this heated race is going right down to the wire.

Thank goodness, I watch my Stargate DVDs every day, literally. My sister and I have "the list" and we scratch off each episode we watch....when we have gone through "the list" we start all over again. It is the one show that cannot bore me! I am just glad that season four is finally here. All my friends/family know not to bother me during this hour!!! I hope iTunes gets cracking so I can buy the season pass.

It's amazing to me the amount of work that goes into making just one episode--and the amount of people that work so hard and love what they do so that we, the audience, have a great piece of "Art" to watch every friday night. I have come to appreciate all the people involved, not just the ones who get to be 'on screen'. Thank God you are with me. After the poor job of showrunning he did with SG-1 (running it into the proverbial ground) I'm glad you agree. Lots of people know he's a good writer - but as showrunner - GAWD awful!!!
Good call by you to agree and keep him away - yeah let him write or direct but definitley keep him away from deciding show direction or in any way shape or form making decisions or "running" the show - you have allayed my fears with your agreement - you are a good man.
I haven't read any of the authors...but, if you still really want a vote, I vote for The Legacy of Heriot and Lord Foul’s Bane. They just sound cooler. (yeah that's a valid reason to vote for them...DOH!)

“Joe’s fans aren’t happy”? Speak for yourself - nobody elected you spokesperson for all of us. For one thing, why not wait and see what happens in Season 4 before commenting so confidently about it? For another thing, if you really are a fan of Mr F, you could try showing a bit more respect for him. He’s perfectly capable of letting the producers, and the fans, know how he feels about the new season - and, guess what, he’s said that Season 4 will be the best yet, *and* that, though he had initial doubts about it, he now thinks that adding Carter to the show is a good idea. I think I’d rather trust his judgement than yours - unlike you, he gives the impression that he knows what he’s talking about and thinks before he comments.
FYI, you may want to tell whomever is in charge of writing up the descriptions for the eps to update their info: My online TV guide lists the cast of both Adrift and Lifeline as "Joe Flanigan, Torri Higginson, Rainbow Sun Francks and David Hewlitt."

Joe, congrats on the new year for SGA. I got "hooked" on SG-1 when I was mending from cancer surgery five years ago, back when Sci Fi was running shows every day and a bunch on Mondays. The show got me through a tough time in my life, and I've been a fan ever since. I have all the DVDs, and find myself going back to previous seasons like old friends. I'm REALLY looking forward to the 4th year of SGA. I don't have a vote on the next books, but I've read most of the books you've recommended (we have a fabulous library system in our town) and I know whatever you choose it will be great. Thanks Joe to you and the folks at SG-1 and SGA for doing what you do.

What sort of rigmarole did you have to go through to get clearance to put outtakes and deleted scenes in future DVD releases? I recall you talking about the possibility of them in some of your early run episodes on SG1 way back when. I know you have to not only get clearance from the powers that be, but also from any actor who appears in the deleted scene. Did some of the actors not feel comfortable showing their "messed up" takes?

I know you plan on having Daniel appear in season 5 and I'm very excited about that. A huge thank you from me. I love Michael. He's extremely talented.
The question that I really wanted answered though was how much the on-line fans have influence on decisions that we see on the show. Your comment about the episode between Ronon and Teal'c kind of peeked my interest. It's o.k. if you can't answer because I completely understand. I guess that I'm just curious because times have changed so much. When my Dad worked for CBS it was before the internet was such a 'big thing'. Whether that's a good thing or not, he didn't have forums that he could get on to see what fans opinions were and unfortunately by the time that happened he passed away before he got the chance.
I thought that you had also worked in the business before the internet was a big thing too. So you can compare the way it was in the past to the way it is now. I was just curious what your feelings were about how things are today and if you really do pay a lot of attention to the fans that post on forums?

Adrift ROCKED!!! Wonderful ep. So well done on so many fronts. The effects were fantastic (asteriod belt, chasm leap). The friction between Sheppard and McKay was excellent especially the scene where Rodney refuses to follow John's order. The scene with Ronon thanking Weir was very touching.
I am SO looking forward to next week. Kudos to you and your team on a job well done. I hope the ratings are huge.

Well, I just finished watching SGA and I was so excited to finally see it! It feels like I've been waiting forever! I had an added joy because since I just got a satellite I was able to watch the East coast feed and not have to wait 3 more hours to watch it when I usually would and I'll probably watch it again at the normal time!
Anyways, I first wanted to say the digital effects in this episode were superb. You guys really went all out on this episode and it really shows. There were a lot of great moments in this ep: one of my favorites was the scene with Ronon at Elizabeth's bedside and the other one was the one you mentioned with Rodney standing up to Shep. I could go on, but suffice it to say this was a great opener. The only thing that sucked was the way you left us hanging at the end! Is it next week yet???
It's a shame Elizabeth's on her way out, but I can't wait until Sam gets to Atlantis! I'm so excited about this season, I think it's going to be the best one yet!
So good job to you and everyone else involved with the show! I can't wait for next week's episode and I hope it gets picked up for season 5!

"Crisp" is the word that I would use.
A sense of urgency in the story without rushing the actual show.
You have to love Zelenka.
Loved the operation scene with shots "dissolving" (probably not the right technical term) into one another.

(And "A+" requires a Major Lorne appearance but he's stranded on the Appollo ;-))
Just finished watching and loved it. The arguments between Shepherd and McKay, Zelenka being brave, the general solve one thing and get another problem. looking forward to what happens next.
I know I've already commented once but now after seeing "Adrift..." All I can say is, if the rest of Season Four is as good as this opener...I am gonna be one heck of a happy camper. :)

Just wanted to say that I really enjoyed Adrift. The special effects were terrific and it was great to see some really nice character interactions. I hope the ratings are good b/c everyone did a wonderful job on the episode.
I do hope you bring Elizabeth back next season b/c I am very intrigued so far with her storyline. I'll have to wait and see what happens later on this season, but right now it looks like that particular storyline has lots of potential.

Just watched the ep live of course!), and WOW, great job! I can't wait for next week to see how the arc is resolved. I'm glad now I waited when I had the chance to see the pre-release versions that were floating around a few weeks ago. It was fun to be at the edge of my seat waiting for the next piece of action.
Some of my favorite moments was the Sheppard/McKay controversy over activating the nanites and how McKay apologized in the end. I also thought Joe Flannigan did an amazing job in this one, with the full range of the emotional roller-coaster he was on. The other actors were fabulous too, but he really stood out for me.
Thanks so much for a wonderful episode, and I'll tune again next week for the exciting conclusion to this story line.
Absolutely awesome premiere. Great job, and yeah, the Sheppard/McKay duel over nanites ranks right up there as best moment ever.

My post-Adrift review in a nut shell.
IT ROCKED.
Here's why:
I loved...
...the tension created by the whole beat the clock problems facing both the city and Liz.
...the asteroid solution.
...the opening credits. Great job!
...seeing Zelenka shine.
...Keller. She rocks period and it looks like she can hold her own with McKay. So far.
...how desperate they were to help Weir, how angry John was with their solution and Liz's horror at realizing what they've done (I had been wondering if the events from The Real World would come into play with regard to Liz's destiny).
...the very touching moment with Ronon and Liz.
...Dr. Lee and Sam working on a solution.
...John and Radek's jump in space (although I have a question about this).
...McKay! Everything about him made this episode perfect...especially his snarktastic sense of humor.
Now for my minor criticism/question. I thought that the city was moving through space. If this is so, how were John and Radek able to jump cleanly across like that? With that part of the city unprotected from the shield, there's no way they could have landed directly opposite their original position if the city's moving beneath them.
In conclusion...and as I said above...Adrift ROCKS. It was everything I was hoping for and more. Bring on Lifeline and the rest of Season 4! And while I'm getting all demanding, bring on a fifth season pickup!!!

The premiere far surpassed my hopes!
I am especially partial to all the McKay-Shep scenes, and Ronon and Elizabeth. The effects department really outdid themselves!

Great episode! I think the entire dorm could hear us go, "WHAT? NOOOOOO!!!" at the 'to be continued' text. Evil. I'm glad that Dr. Z got so much air time. I guess it will make up for the six or so episodes he won't be in the season.
So, I was planning on watching it along with my friend who lives in Austin, with us IM-ing each other while watching it in our faraway cities. My computer for some reason wouldn't connect to the internet, so I had to use my friend's.
We both realized during the third repeat of that alcohol commercial that this is actually the first time either of us have watched a stargate episode in real time, counting SG-1. We both love the show, but we've been playing catch up since day one. I watched a couple of S1 eps., but I didn't come back until I heard that Beckett had been killed, thus sparking my, "What?! Nevah!" part of my brain and turned my attention back to SGA. And we weren't disappointed.
I see that Martin Gero is back to his old "Let's kill more people" tricks again ;D.
And Radek with crutch, even more adorably hug-worthy. I loved the whole 'bad-to-worse-to-good-to-...damn' aspect of the story. GREAT SEASON OPENER *excited*.
I really enjoyed the season opener! I loved the scenes with Zelenka and Sheppard; I hope there are many more in upcoming episodes. I was much amused with Ronan and his constant-friend the IV bag. Though I'm going to have to reserve judgement on Dr. Keller. I do adore Jewel Staite but I'm just not sure about her character yet. I miss Beckett; I really do. Not meaning to be snarky (OK, maybe a *little* snarky) but ya'll didn't waste any time getting Amanda Tapping in the opening credits.
Lovely, lovely job with Adrift. Thanks to everyone involved for all their hard work - it was definitely worth waiting for!

Adrift was brilliant- my favourite part was the Sheppard & McKay fight and how McKay wouldn't back down. Right, and Ronon's thank you to Elizabeth. They were both bittersweet.
As much as I'd like to participate in your book club this month, I just started "The Wayfarer Redemption", and am loving it so far!
Joe, I'm on my second viewing of Adrift and I just want to say thank you for such a great episode. I think you all have done a marvelous job on all sides here and I'm hoping with all my heart that SGA gets its S5. I can't wait until next week...and the week after that...and the week after that...well, you get the idea. Kudos to everyone. Well done!
I meant to reply to your blog yesterday and commiserate on the head vs trunk! A month ago, I was getting a bike from the rear of my van when my youngest son did a Superman from the inside via the rear hatch handle, bringing it down squarely on my head. I was on the ground before I'd realized what happened. Then it was another dazed minute or so before I processed no blood, still alive, kid running down the driveway crying his head off because he thought he'd killed his mom! Seriously, trunks and heads, they just don't get along and yet I've heard of these incidents happening with painful regularity. Well, you watch, in another five years, we'll all need to wear our safety helmets to operate trunks!
Anyway, Adrift was a wonderful episode. Can't say enough about it, but Joe Flanigan's reaction when he is told about Weir's condition was incredibly moving and Jason did such a fantastic job with his scene with Weir, also. Loved the Sheppard-McKay banter and seeing them go a bit at logger-heads. I'm really looking forward to this season and am crossing everything I have for a 5th season pick up. Thanks again, to you and all the cast and crew.
And pass on a big thanks to the music crew!
Wow! I was overwhelmed by Adrift! It was awesome! I completely gushed on my blog, but you know, that's ok. The opening credits were great, and I was excited to see Carter in the first episode. I wasn't sure if you would wait until Lifeline. I love the plot line with Elizabeth! It's so sad though, because now we know, thanks to the teasers and articles, that she's going to sacrifice herself for the team! Anyway, terrific job on Adrift! I'm really really looking forward to Lifeline next week.
However, I do have one question. How do the writers and producers figure out the solutions to all the problems with these plausible scientific answers and reasons? Would they, hypothetically, work in a situation like that?

Awesome ep! Tried to call my sister in VA to discuss the opening scenes and forgot she was out scrapbooking! How messed up is that! I had told her to cancel but she said it's a commitment thing. She should be committed to SGA and our "Friday night phone calls during commercial breaks to discuss the scene" and not some goofy scrapbooking party. Silly woman! Anyways, I'm so looking forward to next week's ep!
As for the book of the month thing...Donaldson's "Lord Foul's Bane" fer sure. Great series! I'm more fantasy reader than sci-fi so I don't know who to pick between the other two books you listed...sorry. :(

Yes, you're in space, no problem. No wind, no gravity. You can also survive for a short period of time (very short) without a space suit as well (remembering the screams of "you can't do that!" when Crichton went from one ship to another in the vacuum of space).
ADRIFT - liked it quite a bit! Though the midway stations segments were a tad on the boring side (sorry, I wanted the action/drama on Atlantis instead).
Sheppard and Zelenka need to work together more :)

Oh, wow, "Adrift" was fabulous! The acting, the writing, and the effects were all top-notch. Wow.
Since you asked for our thoughts on the episode, you should know that I loved it!!!! Loved it!!! The Sheppard-McKay conflict especially. The defiance, the anger, and the apology was an interesting parallel to Trinity, and I think it showed a lot of growth in both characters and how far they've come over the last few years.
Let everyone know they did a great job!

I have been fidgety all week for tonight at 10pm...and the wait was defintly worth it.
OMG!!! It was fantastic....best beginning of a new season yet.
The effects were amazing...and there were so many deep character moments. So deep into decisions and feelings so quickly...I am aleady amazed by this season.
The jumper sequence and the space jump were great. Every moment of the epi was intense...and the music just added to that. Joel is a genius as usual.
But I think my fav parts were not the big sequences at all...It was the character moments...lots of great ones here.
Ronon's thank you was so touching...actually almost made me cry. He hasn't had a one on one scene with her since Duet right? I love it when Ronon shows that kind of emotion...and Jason is so fantastic.
That, and when John and McKay are fighing...and McKay actually called him John...I don't think I've ever heard him say his first name before? And this was even more intense than the fighting in Trinity. Great for these 2 characters...
Anyway...thought I'd share my feelings...but I really didn't expect anything less.

BTW Joe, taking Torri Higginson out of the credits before she is gone is probably the harshest treatment I've ever seen towards a departing actor. That was completely unprofessional.

I've been reading your blog for several months now and truly enjoy your food/chocolate reviews, photos, videos and comments to the fans and spammers alike. Thank you for taking the time to share these items with us.
To say that my friends and I have been anxiously awaiting tonight's episode would be a huge understatement. Thanks to all involved for not disappointing us! This episode was everything I, for one, had hoped to see. The manic race against the clock on so many fronts was really very well written and performed. Many folks have already commented on several of my favorite moments but I don't think enough has been said about the jumper/asteroid sequence! Loved the whole video game reference!

A few quick comments on the S4 premiere ep "Adrift." Beware SPOILERS.
JF: He was delightful with Sheppard's gamut of emotions in this one. Put him through the wringer this season and I'll be a happy gal.
DH: He was *so* Rodney and he's always so good at being *so* Rodney. He also had the best line of the ep.
TH: Excellent job of portraying her unhappiness over the nannites business. Evidently Sheppard does know her better.
RL: Teyla seemed to be kind of filling the Weir position here. Was that intentional?
JM: I absolutely adored his infirmary scene over the unconscious Elizabeth. It was wonderful to see that side of Ronon. Are we going to see more of that this season?
DN: Radek the Hero! And the tossee. ;) It was great seeing him be heroic and, hey, toss some more Sheppard and Radek scenes our way. That was fun!
JS: I'm not getting a very good feel for the good doctor yet. But from what you've said we'll be seeing some other sides of her this season that will flesh out her character more.
AT: Okay, it just seemed wrong to see Sam *alone*. I kept expecting the rest of SG1 to walk around the corner any moment. I'm sure I'll get over that eventually. That said, I'm expecting great things from Sam next week once she gets hot on the trail of Atlantis.
McShep: Okay, angry Sheppard. Nonapologetic McKay. And then the "I'm sorry" moment. Bliss. And I'm curious: How do you view the McKay Sheppard relationship? Do you think Sheppard and McKay think of each other as friends? Family? Or just friendly coworkers?
Overall, I do have to say I wasn't getting as much a sense of impending doom as I thought I would from this ep. Or the urgency, but then again most of these characters have been through so much with Atlantis that I suspect they've got a bit of 'either it's handled or we die' attitude that comes across as rather laid back at times. But there were some terrific moments (the jump, the asteroids, the whole last ten minutes, etc.) and I have a feeling this is an ep that will play better in concert with next week's ep. There were some great moments written for every single character (however, I'm missing Lorne so I hope he's back soon) and the best line of the ep? The very last line, uttered by Rodney. Just had me grinning. It was a tad outlawish, which is so Atlantis in many ways.
A great start to the season. It's got me excited. I can't wait 'til next Friday. Please give kudos to all involved, Joe. I have a feeling from things you've said that the writers were all afire this season and it's going to be one to remember.
P.S. I'm suspecting Lulu is one spoiled gal. Are you still spooning? ;)

The greatest thing???
John and Rodney's interaction throughout the episode.
The whole nanite argument was the BEST SHEP/MCKAY scene EVER!!! Calling him John, refusing a direct order and apologizing in the same episode...I wanted to give Rodney a big hug all this.
The "Radek flight" in spacesuit, got me laughing, Zelenka's awe expression after landing... a must.
Then Radek gets microasteroidized (new word in my dictionnary), ouch that hurt like hell to watch, but not as much as Weir's head shaving (my personal nightmare.. yeah I'm a girl!). Lizzie wakes up, with her HAIR intact (big sigh of relieve from me... I so want nanites too now, just in case!).
Obviously Elizabeth is not happy camper about being half cylon ..euh I mean replicator, lol (crossover with BSG and Laura Roslin mysterious cancer cure with half cylon blood!).
Anyhow, those were the best scenes in the episode. I thought the Carter/Lee scenes were too slow and not that interesting (looking forward to actually seeCarter as the leader in Reunion).
Teyla was a bit left out and I felt Elizabeth's near death was not touching that many people in the city(Ronon was the only one to go see and talk to Lizzie, John was shocked and teary eyed for a second, Rodney was baffled and I expected more yelling/screaming however HE DID SAVE HER in the end! and... well, that's it.)
Still, 9/10 and BEST SEASON OPENER for Adrift.

The special effects were terrific and the clashing between McKay and Shep has stunned me, especially the part, when Rodney called him finally "John"!!!! OMG, I still can't believe he did...
I really loved the heartrending moments with Ronon and Sheppard, I almost had to cry. That was really good acting... wow!
And I also liked the nice moments between Sam and Dr. Lee, that was quite funny!
Kudos to you and all the crew, cast, writers and directors.... You truly did an amazing job!!!

No no my concern wasn't about whether or not they could survive the jump. That I had no problem with. My issue was that gravity or no, wind or no, launching yourself across any kind of distance out of an object (in this case the city) that is hurdling through space at who-knows-what speed...unless you were encased within the force field, you'd have to account for the fact that the city was in motion and factor that into your thinking; otherwise you'd be helplessly stuck watching as the rest of the city passes under and away from you. I mean it would be different if the city were completely motionless or if they had the force field maintaining the environment around them and protecting them from the momentum of the city...but that wasn't the case here.
Am I right Joe or am I missing something???
Great job on Adrift, best season premier yet and hopfully it reflects the whole season. Alos great job on the way you introduced Carter, not to over the top.
Um well pretty much everything that I thought about the premier has been said (great effects, good tension with Shep and McKay, Zalenka being the hero, Ronon showing emotion, action all the way....you get the idea). So I'll just right on all the good parts and call it a night. Loved it, can't wait for the rest of the season!
"Adrift" was even better than I'd been expecting. Congratulations to all involved (not just Mr F, as per my nom d'internet, though of course his acting was excellent, as usual). The visual effects were worth the long wait - I hope we'll see the jumper fleet swarming into action again some time.

Do you ever consider making a slower SGA seaosn premiere? The premieres seem to have set a pattern of "and then and then and then" - whenever something is solved, immediately a new crisis is on the way. Unlike SG1 premieres that were often more slow paced (Redemption, Avalon, Fallen, or Threshold as a second parter premiere) - but because of that they seemed to have somewhat more substance both plot wise (it's not all "let's get over the next crisis") and character-wise, because there's actually time for the characters to do something other than panic about the next crisis. Any chance for a more calmed down premiere if you get picked up for season 5?
I love what you have done with season 4 man, honestly, with all of the changes, the new races and everything. Where the hell did they get an Ancient War ship, and since when did the JumperDrive become operational?? I love Stargate: Atlantis even more now- you guys rule.

Though I haven't followed much of SGA (or SG1 for that matter) I did watch the premiere, and plan to watch next week's ep - even though that teaser showed your hand too soon. But it's a nice change to see a strong female character like Weir play a key role in a story arc.

You and the production team are EVIL. just EVIL. (And I mean that in the nicest way possible.) Having poor Radek astroid'd in the leg like that? And Elizabeth - part Replicator?! And then make it a CLIFFIE? I applaud you on your brilliant writing skillZ, but all the same... EVIL!!!

OMG! This is so funny! The two biggest Anti Weir people on GW have posted in the thread about the credits how disgusted they are with the way you've dumped Weir from the credits while she's still supposed to be on the show. Not only that, they're disgusted that Amanda's in second spot instead of Rachel.
Way to piss off even more fans. Surely you could have shown Torri the respect to keep her in the opening credits at least until her character's gone, or do you have that little respect for her?

Brilliant! I was stressed, thrilled, giddy, sad and happy all in one hour. And I screamed in mighty frustration when we got to "To Be Continued."

Thanks for your clarification, Mr. Mallozzi. Seems quite odd that the actress doesn’t know why she has been fired, but I suppose that the TV-world is a hard and cold world. Honestly, before I thought that Weir would be missing this season and that she would return the following season to the Main cast and the leadership of Atlantis. But, after this interview with Torri Higginson, that sounds like "goodbye forever", now I doubt that she will appear again in the series (besides the four episodes), not even in a single episode. Well, I suppose that we will have to “wait and see”, as you usually say...
About Adrift: Awesome episode, I truly enjoy it. Keller is very nice and charming. I love her. McKay and Sheppard, like always, at full force. And fabulous Cgi, of course. Really, a great job!!

I was somewhere between college and my hometown during the game because I was going home to watch Stargate with my sister and her friend she invited over for the event :D (they say we're the number one party school in the US... Adrift was GREAT! I loved the action scene! at one point I turned to my friends and said (they've got 20 minutes left, what are they going to do next??) Such great character moments! Zelenka and nobody scientists getting in on the action, Sheppard with the weight of Command, everyone one getting a worry about lizzie moment (the Ronon moment, so sweeeet!), I was especially happy to see how much McKay cared about Weir :) Such a great episode, I can't wait for next week!
Until then it's back to college to hear about how we won the game. As long as they didn't burn down the town while I was gone, I'll be happy.
Your joking "I smell spin-off" response to that comment had me wondering. I know there are all kinds of liability-related reasons you can't read unsolicited scripts, etc. But people post unsolicited ideas and plot suggestions on your blog all the time. Obviously, you ignore them, but periodically they must happen to coincide with actual planned plots, etc. Is that less of a liability issue because your blog's a public forum? What do MGM's lawyers think about the whole thing?
Note: this is very, very hypothetical. I don't pretend to have any ideas worth sharing. I'm just a law student who can't escape these kinds of "why" questions even in the TV-watching part of my life!

The book is actually titled Legacy of Heorot, and not Heriot as you typed... just wanted to make it easier for those looking for the book online, since I haven't heard of any of these titles before and am taking a look at them on Amazon.
In the sci-fi category, I'm going to go with Legacy of Heorot... Legion of the Damned sounds interesting, but hasn't hooked me enough to encourage me to read it in a month... the book club will mean cutting back on Game of Thrones and City of Pearl as it is!
The fantasy was a lot harder to decide on, as there was a lot to discourage me from reading both books... but I like a challenge, so I'm curious to try the China Mieville (the familiarity of that name was driving me mad... turns out that it's because we've been selling Un Lun Dun for months now!) book.

I hope Joe doesn't mind my jumping in here. When Joe mentioned in a recent blog entry that it would be a priority to try to have Daniel in season 5, he also mentioned at the same time that he would like to have Mitchell do a guest spot too if Ben is not too busy. I also doubt that Joe would have either Daniel or Mitchell do guest appearances in season 5 if he wasn't a big fan of both of the characters; not to mention having respect for the actors and their abilities to bring something good to the show.

Premier SG Atlantis was very much worth the wait! Not only watched it at 10 but also at 12 on Scifi, to catch the little stuff you can miss the 1st time through. The emotions were high and well played. Great visual effects! Loved the asteroids & game comment from Rodney, and of course Dr. Lee and the bag- we don't need to repeat that, thank you. Did make me laugh. Who's idea was that?
How did you work out the no gravity close-up scenes -was that all green screen & wires?
With the complete 10-year set of SG1 DVD's there is an extra disk(s)of special stuff. Any chance of a seperate purchase of just that for those of us that already have the 10 years? Yes, I also have all 3 of SGA too.
Last question- Ever since I first saw the Waith, I said the costumes or a mask would be great for Holloween. Any plans for adding that to the retail end of the franchise? I realize it's a little late for it this year, but dosen't it take that long for retail production and merchandising. Consider it. They scare the crap out of me!

I have to say, Mr. M, you didn't exaggerate Adrift one bit. It was terrific! I was looking forward to Season Four anyway, but this just makes me wish I could view all the episodes back to back right now.
The space jump scene was especially impressive. Kudos to your CGI team.
One small nitpick. I loved Jewel Staite's Kaylee from Firefly, and I know it's not fair to compare her performance with Paul McGillion's, but in the first couple of scenes of Adrift, Dr. Keller just seemed a little too calm and controlled. Dr. Beckett would have conveyed much more of a sense of urgency. At this point, it's moot, and maybe she becomes a little more passionate as the season progresses, and as I said, it's my own little nitpick.
Anyway, great start to the season, can't wait for next week's episode.
Nice Season Opener I have to say. Some pretty neat ideas in there. After First Strike I thought "how could they possibly get outta there". It always seems like that in the season final, but Adrift is a great pick up!
One question though:
since when is the intergalactic gatebrigde a constant wormhole? i thought each gates connects to another and fowards whatever is to be forwared. don't see how radioing back and forth could work...

OK, I may be wrong here, but I truly hope there was an irony in your "Gawd! I’m with you. Why would we want someone like THAT working on Atlantis?" answer and the anonymous soooo wanted to read it differently that it seemed serious to him/her. Personally I think Rob Cooper did great job as the SG-1's showrunner, seasons 9 and 10 are my absolutely favourite ones and I've already "met" a lot of people on-line who watched season 10 on DVD (ignored SciFi's airing) and for them this season was brilliant, too. We can hardly wait to see The Ark of Truth, any chance that Canadian Space Channel will air it before it's released on DVD next year?

It combined a good dose of problem solving and action along with plenty emotional angst. Great special FX and wonderful acting especially by JoeF. He manages to capture Sheppard's inner turmoil perfectly. Thanks again to you and all involved for a wonderful show. I'm really looking forward to Lifeline

it was sooo good... i love wikipedia's summaries but they are nowhere CLOSE to the actual thing. the only not-so-good thing, tho not a huge bother, was that we didn't see much of teyla. is teyla going to kick butt this season or are we going to have to cross our fingers and hope for season five (and maybe use some methods of erm persuasion on the scifi people)?
My issue was that gravity or no, wind or no, launching yourself across any kind of distance out of an object (in this case the city) that is hurdling through space at who-knows-what speed...unless you were encased within the force field, you'd have to account for the fact that the city was in motion and factor that into your thinking; otherwise you'd be helplessly stuck watching as the rest of the city passes under and away from you.
No, in fact you would have the same momentum as the city you've been traveling on. With no air drag to slow you down, you would maintain that momentum as you stepped off the structure. The momentum from the "push off" would add to what you already had. For the purposes of the physics, it's as if the city isn't moving at all.
Remember the astronauts do space walks outside the shuttle or space station, and these are orbiting at thousands of miles per hour. Yes, the astronauts are tethered, but that's only to prevent their own momentum from pulling them away from the traveling bodies.
My only problem with the asteroid stuff is that even the dust would have cause massive damage to the city... we saw that with Radek's injury, but the same would happen to the structures. I wonder what it will all look like in the end!
Great episode, Joe. Wonderful mix of grand effects and character moments. Love the swarming jumpers, Rodney flying up the side of the building, Ronon's scene, and John and Rodney's realistic conflict. Well done!

i drove my friend insane last night because we were at a football game an hour away from home (and i don't even like football) and i kept checking the time and saying, "we have to be home by ten. we have to be home by ten." finally she's like, "will you just RELAX already!" to which i responded, "i can't! if we aren't back by ten i think i'm going to have a seizure or something!" mercifully, we were only 2 minutes late. :)

I do have a question, which I know is probably unanswerable. How many hours of work went into the effect when Sheppard and Zelenka cross the void in the tower? The change in perspective for that was silver screen worthy. It was one of the best FX sequences I have seen on any media.

Adrift was just full of awesomeness! The character interactions and the FX (like the space jump -- whee!) were great (as usual), but surprisingly (to myself) my absolute favorite part was the ragtag squadron of jumper pilots!! I loved the variety of genders, races and sizes -- it's nice and comforting to know that the gene carriers aren't all studmuffin white guys. I hope we'll see more of this diversity in the future eps.

Loved last night's episode! You guys had me worried for a bit - thought we'd be losing another character (thank goodness we didn't). Loved all the highlights you mentioned, but I especially liked seeing Sheppard emotional in the infirmary scene (subtle!) and really mad (Sheppard-McKay clash). Highlights the stress they're all under. Great acting, great everything. Can't wait for next week's episode.
Another Q... how do you guys do the outer space scenes? Making them weightless and then not weightless and all that? I've always wondered.

Well, I was very pleasently surprised by Adrift, and I didn't hate what happened to Weir (and I REALLY) thought I was going to), I think this has potential. The one problem I had was Keller. She was awful, there was none of Beckett's warmth or care - I know it's a bit unfair to compare the characters but there was nothing on show from Keller to make me stop thinking about Beckett, and when the rest of the episode was SO good it did jar quite a bit. Suddenly Missing has become a very missable episode
Carter was fine, I don't think she'll harm the show, she just seems a little, superflous. Nothing objectionable at all, just doesn't bring anything particularly new to the table (though I have hopes that this will improve with the series).

Ooooh pretty much all of the above! Loved seeing Sheppard in command... I enjoyed our first view of Keller really doing her Dr thing... Zelenka was awesome in this episode... as were the effects (the rotating camera view of the jump was incredible!)... the Sheppard-McKay clash was wonderful.. seriously intense and so well acted... and the dialogue in this episode was fabulous too.. lots of wonderful lines, some of which made me laugh a lot.. "Dumb this down much more and you're gonna get hit!" :D
Oooh one thing that sticks in my mind too in terms of the structure of the ep was the fantastic juxtposition of Keller's attempts to save Weir and McKay's attempts to save the city... particularly where the scene cuts from first one and then the other of them saying in frustration, "Come on..!"
In short - I loved this episode! I think possibly my favourite season-opener yet. Season 4 is here, at last.. hurrah!!

Well, you asked for our thoughts, so here are mine:
Adrift was a wonderful combination of tension, action, emotion, desperation, teamwork, fear, strength of character, and caring.
It was perfect, and yes, a wonderful season opener, certainly the best so far for me.
I'm not going to single out any one actor here, because everybody was fantastic. I must say that the emotion was wonderfully expressed, and that I felt tearful on one particular occasion!
The PJ scene with the asteroids, and Shep and Zelenka's space walk were just amazing and had me in total awe of the special effects department. Wow, is all I can say, those scenes were breathtaking.
Congratulations to everyone involved in the production. :)

Not interested in a Wraith mask but thought Atlantis (the city)would be make a gorgeous Christmas ornament several times last night while watching Adrift.
Regarding the premiere last night: I liked Shep and McKay facing off over what to do about Weir. It highlights why our two boys can't run Atlantis by themselves, and opens the door for Sam.

Okay, bit more details then. I loved everything in it, the score, the plot line, the great story arc for Weir. I loved the Ronon and Weir scenes and Doc K telling Shep that she might not survive, and his reaction. *grabs a kleenex* The asteroid scenes were fab and very clever, loved the joke about playing Asteroids...can't imagine McKay getting zero!! *iz shocked* Oooh so does that mean Atlantis has at least 20 PJ's? I absolutely adored the angsty and heartfelt Shep/Rodney scenes when they had their argument, and Mckay's apology. *sniff* The whole ep was fantastic. A 9.9 from me. 0.1 taken off for whumping Zelenka instead of Shep. :P

I thought Adrift was OK, but not as good as The Siege, Pt. 3 The special effects and acting were good, but the storyline was way too predictable. Hopefully the next few episodes will be better storywise or you can kiss this show goodbye in my opinion! All the special effects in the world can't make-up for mediorce writing and that is what has plagued this franchise lately. Too bad it seems none of the writers you have are visionary in their writing or maybe it is because it always looks like the writing is done by committee. Oh well, I'll give it a few more episodes before I throw in the towel.

After seeing that Carter didn't save the day in her very first episode, I hope the fears of all the people on the anti-Carter bandwagon have lessened!

I would add that some hardcore fans don't care either. I consider myself a very hard core SGA-only fan (never liked SG-1) and I like Torri a lot... And I couldn't care less about the order in the opening credits, and why Torri isn't there and Amanda is there from the very start. That's something between the actress/their agents and whoever deals with that at MGM/Sci Fi/Bridge studios. IMHO, none of our business.
As long as I like the characters and writing in a show (and so far I love both characters and writing in SGA), I don't care about actors' negotiations, studio politics or whatever.

Just read the comments on 'Adrift' am so jealous of all you guys. We in Australia will just have to wait and wait and wait and wait and wait and wait... you get the idea.
I'm posting again, because I wanted to congratulate you all on a WONDERFUL introduction to Carter. Actually, most of it goes to Joel Goldsmith. It was all in the music. There was a slow pan to Carter's face, and a little clarinet (if memory serves me correct) melody played out in a way that invoked feelings of slight nostalgia, like when you see a character in a movie that hasn't been in that movie series for a film or two. It was nice.
Good job with the season 4 opener. Even if an asteroid field wouldn't look quite like that, it was still an inspired idea to add that wonderful extra bit of things going horribly wrong and I loved the whole Space Invaders sequence.
Speaking of - I am also loving some of the extras in this episode, especially the non-American ones. The Chinese gate tech with lines was great, and I was especially charmed by the British woman with the gene who was flying one of the puddlejumpers (second one shown sitting in the pilot chairs). She had the best facial expressions!
The way the episode handled the chain of command was very nice, and I loved that even standard procedures can provide revealing character moments.
And Dr. Keller is clearly smarter than most medical trauma show doctors because he didn't try using paddles when there Weir was in defib. I was quite charmed by her performance in this episode.
Can't wait for the next one!
My thoughts? I loved it. I was really impressed with everything about this episode. The performances were wonderful, and Joe Flanigan in particular really impressed me with his reaction to Keller's news about Weir. It was beautiful and subtle, and it made Sheppard's later opposition to the nanite solution that much more powerful. Another thing I loved was the juxtaposition of Keller's struggle to revive Elizabeth with Rodney's struggle to do the same with Atlantis. It was so nicely done.
One of the best parts of the episode was John and Rodney's conflict over the nanites. Each of them acted according their own belief of what was best, and neither one of them was clearly "right" or "wrong." I appreciated that Sheppard knew Rodney well enough to realize instantly what a big deal Rodney's "I'm sorry" was, and knew that he was, in turn, going to have to get over being pissed off and accept the apology. It was a great character moment for both of them.
My one quibble with the episode was that the scenes with Carter and Dr. Lee seemed to drag a bit. Not a show-breaker, by any means, but I found myself, despite being a fairly big Carter fangirl, wanting to get through them and find out what was going on in Atlantis. Just a personal pacing thing, I think.
Anyway, I really, really loved it. I've been watching Stargate for, well, just about ten years now, and it's great to still be as excited about new episodes as I was in the beginning. :)
I really enjoyed Adrift. The Keller/Sheppard scene was very moving. The Sheppard/McKay confrontation was great! I thought for a second Sheppard might put the hurt on Rodney. The special effects were wonderful. Loved the space walk with Zelenka. Danger danger! I am anxious to watch Lifeline to see how the rest of this unfolds (and to see if Sheppard loses his cookies after they lose Elizabeth).
I seriously loved "Adrift". I thought it was a very tightly held episode and the graphics was amazing (I was in awe of the spacewalk!). The team dynamics were awesome, too. I loved McKay/Sheppard arguing with each other (my favorite line had to be, "If you dumb this down any further..."). I also loved that McKay finally called Sheppard "John!" That has got to be the first time, right? Well, it was fantastic.
Also, the most favorite thing of the entire episode (aside from Zelenka who rocked) is Ronon/Elizabeth! I loved that Ronon was sort of hovering around Elizabeth for the entire episode and that small scene where he thanked her. It has now become one of my all time favorite scenes of SGA, so thank you for that. It's seriously a genius scene! I loved it.
And I also think that with that scene a hundred new shippers were born, including me. :D Seriously fantastic. :D
I knew Jason Momoa could act (he has to, if only to keep up with Dave Hewlett!), but his scene with Weir in the infirmary was definitely one of the highlights of the episode.
I have one question, though -- why didn't Sheppard call for the shielded jumper (from Grace Under Pressure) when they saw the broken hallway? I think he said something about calling for a jumper when Zelenka got hurt (great shot of the micro asteroid zipping through the suit and subsequent flesh, btw, OUCH), but wouldn't it have only taken a few minutes for the jumper to arrive? And then they could've used the shield to block any more micro asteroids from hitting them.
I know that not using a jumper heightens the sense of peril, but then I would've liked an explanation why the jumper wasn't available. Maybe it was on the Apollo, or something? Anyway, a small "Why didn't they do that?" moment in an episode of really awesome moments. I think this was the best the season premiere since the pilot, because you moved the story along AND developed most of the characters at the same time.

Okay...I admit it - caught "Adrift" online last night. And having read the other comments, there is a lot I have to agree with.
The emotional resonance in this episode was spectacular. The moment when Ronon was in the infirmary with Weir tugged at my heart and seeing Sheppard's eyes start to tear up was almost heartbreaking.
Even more so now than ever, I feel like Sheppard and McKay are like brothers - they seem to have this relationship that, whilst it has it's similarities to Jack and Daniel, is so completely unique I don't think anyone could ever understand it. When they butt heads so violently as they did, I was half-expecting Shep to smack a wall. As it was, the faint shadow of disappointment and betrayal that seemed to flicker over his face was almost beautiful and McKay's apology was all the more bittersweet for it - kudo to both Flanigan and Hewlitt for making those moments so real.
I laughed at the asteroids comments, almost cheered when Zelenka stated all was well, deflated with Rodney when the intercom went off with a problem again, got worried with Sheppard as things went from bad to worse, knew a little fear as abject terror seized Weir as she realised what had happened, felt for the desperation of Keller to save a life, found some solace in the gentle way Teyla was offering hope and faith in those around her...I was completely hooked.
