October 5, 2007

Today is our last production day on Stargate Atlantis’s fourth season and, looking back, I have to say it’s been an exciting/challenging/frustrating/satisfying/whirlwind year. It feels like only weeks ago we were all reconvening, first draft scripts in hand, poised to produce what we hoped would be the best season of the show yet. And looking back over what we’ve accomplished this year, I’m pleased to say that we succeeded. If viewers are able to put aside reservations they may have about the much-discussed cast changes, I’m sure they’ll agree (or, at the very least, be hard-pressed to disagree) that the stories we told this year were more arc-driven, richly textured, and character-centered than ever before. And that the show has never looked so good. I’m extremely satisfied with the end-product, and extremely satisfied with all of the hard work put in by the cast, crew, writers - pretty much everyone who stepped up and helped make this such a terrific year.

Some have asked me about my vacation plans during the hiatus and whether I’d be taking time off. Well, it really depends. If the show doesn’t get picked up, I’ll probably be working on pilot scripts are heading down to L.A. for meetings. If the show does get picked up, then we’ll be spinning stories and heading off to write - over the hiatus. So, time off in the long-term? No. Time off in the short-term? Sort of. I’m so exhausted that I think I’ll be sleeping straight through next week and well into word on the show’s fate.

Well, more and more of you are sending me comments or questions requiring personal responses which include your personal emails. In the future, to save me the trouble of having to cut and paste your various addresses, if you have a question that requires an off-blog response, I’d suggest trying me at either of the following email accounts:

BaronDestructo@yahoo.com
CoooooookieMonster@yahoo.com
Hazzencockle@yahoo.com

By the way, emailing any of these accounts doesn’t necessarily guarantee a response (even a prompt one) and you’re more likely to catch me here on my blog.

Today’s pics: Some of the people I worked with this year.

Today’s video: Marty G. bids season four a fond farewell.

Today’s mailbag:

Alanna writes: “Ahahaha, fantastic. You look like an Olympic gold medalist in that last picture.”

Answer: Really? Paul went with security guard.

Amanda H. writes: “Personal question tho, are you really going to keep the fish?”

Answer: The fish now reside with our visual effects department. I have visitation rights though.

AnneTeddy writes: “Anyone who thinks acting is always a glamorous job should check out yesterday's video. Did he lose any skin filming that?”

Answer: No because we didn’t use actual sand. Our special effects team purchased 1000 lbs of cornmeal for that sequence. Cornmeal and something else, I can’t remember what. Maybe oats? Apparently one offers the correct look while the other offers the proper consistency that allows it to fly and swirl.

Chevron7 writes: “Why aren't promos and trailers for Atlantis broadcasted on other networks to get the show known by more and more people?”

Answer: It isn’t really in a network’s best interest to run promos for one of their competitor‘s shows.

Anonymous #1 writes: “Yes maybe Tivo, time slot, publicity (or lack thereof), DVR, VCR, downloads, iTunes, etc., hurt the show but it is silly to continue to deny that how changes made were handled and implemented also played a part in SG-1 ratings and will likely play a part in SGA ratings.”

Answer: Again, you’re putting words in my mouth. While a fan could well argue that an uptick or downturn in ratings could be linked to any of a number of creative decisions, the effects of Tivo and DVR, the internet, and the proliferation of channels are factors that are much harder to dispute given the amount of research done and being done on the topic. In other words: Did season 9 of SG-1 suffer a loss because we lost the goa’uld as a central villain? Sure, that’s a possible explanation, but at the end of the day there’s no way of knowing for sure. On the other hand: Are television ratings being effected by DVR and the internet? According to the research being done, the answer is a most definite yes.

Anonymous #2 writes: “It may be that addressing the criticism instead of ignoring it will turn out to be a better answer to the problems than the patches that have been pasted on so far.”

Answer: What exactly do you mean by “addressing the criticism“? Agree with our point of view? And with respect to the criticism leveled at some of the creative changes that were made, we can agree to disagree.

Elizabeth writes: “1) What's your favorite Star Wars movie? 2) Have you ever read Quantum Prophecy The Awakening by Michael Carroll?”

Answers: 1) The Empire Strikes Back. 2) Nope.

Katie writes: “1) Do you watch SGA on Fridays or do you watch other shows? If you have time that is. 2)Are you guys worried about the competition from the Network shows like 20/20, Las Vegas or Numb3rs? 3)Do you watch hockey? 4)Any Thanksgiving plans?”

Answers: 1) I live in Canada, so we don’t get to see Stargate on SciFi. 2) Sure, but I’m a perennial worrier. 3) During the play-offs, sure. 4) Not really.

Anonymous #3 writes: “What about Asian films? Are you or anyone on the set into them?”

Answer: Before moving to Vancouver to work on the show, Paul and I used to attend a weekly Hong Kong movie night in which a bunch of us would gather together to watch the likes of Jet Li, Jackie Chan, Chow Yun Fat, Michelle Yeoh, Steven Chow, Andy Lau, Maggie Cheung, Leslie Cheung, Tony Leung Chiu Wai, Jacky Cheung, Anita Mui, and Lau Ching Wan (to name a few) in action.

SMB Books writes: “What I disagreed with was your decision to use the words “inhuman amount of ignorance”. Granted, that may be your genuine feeling on the matter, but is labeling a group of fans in that manner necessary?”

Answer: I was being sarcastic. Quite literally, to deny the facts is either ridiculously ignorant or, more likely, simply a refusal on the part of certain fans to entertain the notion that other influences may be at work here.

SMB Books also writes: “I’m still in that group that is hoping we get a Season 5 so I have a chance for many more episodes with my favorite character returning to the team. I do have a chance, don’t I?”

Answer: As I’ve often said -this is scifi. Anything can happen!

SMB Books also also writes: “if email for you is sent to the Bridge Studios general email inbox, will it get forwarded to you?”

Answer: Yep.

Scarym writes: “Have you seen CALIFORNICATION, Duchovny's new show?”

Answer: Haven’t seen it but Marty G. says it’s great.

Caty writes: “Was that Joe or BamBam in the vid?”

Answer: That was Joe.

Anonymous #4 writes: “The bone of contention is that you will not admit that the cast changes could in any way, cause a drop in ratings.”

Answer: Could they? Sure. Did they? That is obviously up for debate.

Just curious, have you shown Boney Barney to your other dogs and if so how did they react to it?

Thanks for the pics and i'm looking forward to what S4 brings us. Please pass on my thanks to all involved, and I look forward to seeing all the behind the scenes stuff again in... February? :D

Loved Martin's goodbye kiss. I definately think you should have his alter ego (Beckett's brother) in S5 seeking revenge for Beckett getting killed by the exploding tumour. :P

Another year over for you and one just beginning for us...

I don't think I've really said it before, Joe, so I'll say it now:

Thank you for all your hard work, everyone at SGA. I know that you wouldn't do the job if you didn't get joy from it but that doesn't make it any less meaningful to me and, I'm reasonably sure, to many other fans out there. I just hope that you continue to bring your skills and craft to bear and that we can enjoy the products of your labour for as long as you guys feel the story can continue (and, of course, as long as the PTB allow it).

Little sappy? Maybe...but I recently finished a story that took me three months to do, had started out as a pesky thing and ended up being my literary baby. It was an odd feeling once it was over. So, I guess I can kinda empathise with the feeling of not having something to do tomorrow. *grins*

Well...here's hoping you get:

a) some time for you, Fondy and the fur-babies;
b) good news on all the ratings fronts; and
c) A pick-up - we're rooting for one!!

And hey, Mr Foodie - just what would you say is your favourite meal? The one that you'd want to see after a long hard day to really cheer and warm you.

Personally...I have to go with home-made chilli, a proper roast dinner or a fruit pie with custard!

Have fun!

P.S. I didn't mean it with the lemon juice and paper cuts so please don't set Baron Destructo on me!

I can't believe filming is over! That feels so weird for me so it must be even stranger for you. I can't wait to see the rest of season 4. I really hope you get picked up for a season 5! Thank you so much for keeping us updated with everything this year, as well as the fantastic pics and videos. You are 100% fantastic.
Just a small question, is Carl's last name pronounced as in "finder" or as in "hinder"?

Anonymous said...

Firstly, I just wanted to say that even with the cast changes, I love the show! And I will continue to support it for as long as it runs.
I cant believe people are going on about it so much when they havn't even seen all of season 4 yet! I say watch it and then create an opinion, not the other way around!

What do you think about the new heynielsen site? Atlantis is currently #1, and JF & DH are #1 & #2 in the personalities section!

I agree that TIVO, DVR, and the internet are having an effect on the ratings for SGA and for TV shows in general. I also think that it is important to note that this is first time on Scifi that a Stargate show has premiered in the Fall -- and the Fall during major network premiere week as well. I would think that this might also have an effect on the ratings, making it difficult to compare to previous seasons. (Note that Eureka also has had lower ratings in that premiere week with also a 1.2. Eureka actually had fewer viewers than SGA in that big premiere week.) What do you think?

M said...

I really hope that the show is picked up for a 5th season.

I'm sure that Season 4 will be a great one as from what I've seen/heard of it, I've liked it.

I'd like to say a big thank you to yourself and the crew and cast for always humouring us in this blog!

I hope you have a nice break too.

Can you tell us anything about the pilot scripts you'd be working on, or are they top secrect?

Thank you for all your hard work to produce season 4! I wait eagerly for Friday to arrive so that I can get a new fix of Atlantis. I'm keeping my fingers and toes crossed for a 5th season pick up so that I can continue to enjoy my Stargate! I hope your hiatus is a brief one for all our sakes!

Hey Joe, congratulations on another season of Atlantis. It sounds like it's going to be great, and I can't wait for it to be aired here.

I'm wondering, have you heard ratings figures with DVR inculded?

Anyway, I'm hoping you have lots of success with tonight's episode (if I was in the States I'd be watching!).

Hopefully, this will get an on-blog response.

With Sam Carter acting as CO it appears we'll now see a full-on militarization of Atlantis. The major aspect I liked about Weir's command was she had civilian authority and butted heads with the military more than once. I liked seeing the civilian winning out over the military. It was always an interesting balance and gave a great added touch of drama.

What I'm asking here is will we see less or more of the civilian personnel butting heads with the military because of this change? Will Sam have to tolerate a lot of 'Weir did it this way and it worked' or will she fall back more on her military training despite the large contingent of civilians? Will we see dissatisfaction coming from many who respected Weir, but may feel resentful towards the new military CO of Atlantis?

hi hi hi happy friday the 6th Joe

i was wondering, well i may as well phrase as a question.

Will MGM release any of the Stargate Movies on HD DVD or Blu Ray?

Anonymous said...

Yay! You answered my questions!

Everyone seems to like Empire Strikes Back the best.

Lifeline's on tonight. Unfortunately, I don't have cable, so I won't be able to watch it. I try to borrow my relative's TV when they are on vacation but this time someone is staying at their house when they are gone [waa, it's next week too, when Reunion is on!].

Please answer these two questions. 1) How much time is supposed to have elapsed between Unending and Adrift? 2) Is Jacob Carter going to be on Atlantis or in one of the movies?

Thanks!

I really hope that Atlantis is on our screens for another 100 years. It is a consistently first rate programme which I, as a child of only 44 years, enjoy immensely.

The return of Carson would enhance the programme, but overall the characters, story lines and all the scenery and special effects are, almost, without fault.

Personally I don't want romance and reality to interfere with my television programmes. No ship please!

Perhaps Mars as a Wraith dog or Lulu as a gremlin dog would help - but then I love dogs. I am slave to two cats.

Keep on blogging.

I was one of the many who bought Adrift and ended up with Doppleganger. Do not want to give away anything but it was a great episode. Eeryone in it including Carter was great! I love the one's directed by Rob cooper. The only problem I had with it was the story. You mentioned that the stories in season 4 were ' more arc-driven, richly textured, and character-centered than ever before ' I dont care about arcs and which character gets more play as long as the story is great. Thats what I loved about the earlier episodes of SG-1. The stories! New ideas! Would'nt new writers on the show stop stories from SG-1 being regurgitated on SGA?

Anonymous said...

Once again, congrats on a banging premiere of the show! And don't listen to all the nay-sayers - sure not all fans will agree with cast changes (at this time I'm iffy about Carter coming to Atlantis), but so what? I still LOVE the show! Seeing this picture of Jason Momoa, I cannot help but notice that his dreads are getting REALLY BIG! Would he be allowed to shorten or cut them off and forever change Ronon's image?

Enjoy some well-deserved R&R!

I noticed your blog dedication to Robert Jordan. I was wondering if you read his Wheel of Time (WOT) series and if so what did you think of it? I sort of compare WOT to Atlantis, a lighter and more fun-filled version of say Battlestar Galactica which is darker and can be compared to the 'A Song of Ice and Fire' epic.

Oh my goodness! I just watched Lifeline. It was absolutely fantastic! But also really really sad. I know we haven't actually had a show without Elizabeth yet, but I've already realized how much I'm going to miss her even though Carter is moving over (yay). Torri Higginson did a wonderful job. Now I can't wait for This Mortal Coil. So, thank you for a great episode!

Just saw "Lifeline". This was such a great episode that really showcased how great a leader Weir is and has been through out the series. I'm sad to see her go, am unsure about Carter (though I loved her on SG1), but am optimistic about the chemistry she'll have with the rest of team.

I was wondering though, 1) are there two gates now in use on the same planet and will there be some explaination as to how that works?
2) Will we ever see the team come across said snake-like creature?
3) Are any of the SGA team going to regress (if not in body then in mind) to children? 4) I noticed that SGA runs around one a.m. on Fox, do you think that's helped its viewership?

Anonymous said...

Hi Joe,

Just finished watching "Lifeline" and I had to comment. Actually, not much of a comment. Just a Thank You. I started watching Atlantis during season 2 and really only because Ben Browder had joined SG1. I had nothing better to do at 9pm. Anyway, I just wanted to say, so far this season, Atlantis has just knocked it out of the ball park! Lifeline especially was fantastic.

Really, thank for this.

RebeccaH said...

If the first two episodes are any guide, you have outdone yourselves this year. I alternate between impatience to see the rest of the season, and knowing it will end all too soon. Here's hoping for Season Five!

Joe, I have to admit that though I knew Carl Binder as soon as I saw him, I cannot remember the name of the other man to whom you introduce d me. I was rather nervous at the time. I texted at least 3 people immediately afterwards and called a couple as well. Sooo cool! Thanks again.

One quick question: Let's say I have a detailed idea for a sci-fi/fantasy story. What medium would make me the most money? I am thinking that I should write a novel, which would have every minute detail from the story, from which movies and graphic novels could be made. I can't share what the story is (not even to my best friend yet), but let's just say it is amazing. How would you go about things in a business sense? (Ok so that is two questions).

Chevron7 writes: “Why aren't promos and trailers for Atlantis broadcasted on other networks to get the show known by more and more people?”

Joe's Answer: It isn’t really in a network’s best interest to run promos for one of their competitor‘s shows.

Actually I have seen ads on other cable channels, and my friend texts me every week to tell me what ad he's seen on ESPN during Monday Night Football. They've gotten his attention, so that can only be a good thing.

I'm a huge Hong Kong movie fan! I cut my teeth on the Jackie Chan/Sammo Hung/Yuen Biao comedies, but love all those others you mentioned too. Do you prefer the comedies, the far out fantasy style, or the dramatic shoot 'em ups?

One more question: Now that production is over for the season are the actors free to head home to L.A. or wherever, or is there any post stuff they need to hang around for?

Watching 'Lifeline' for the second time tonight. Love it! It's even better with sound effects and music. ;o)

HOLY smoke! Lifeline just...WOW. Talk about an incredible story-arc for Weir, really, even if it is intermittent (4 episodes, right?) through the season...That's the most amazing stuff with her character yet, I think. :)

Very powerful. I loved how she played the Replicator's game and SO had Oberoth goin'. :D Kudos all the way around. And it will be very interesting...new home planet to explore, etc...and I'm curious to see what happens with the Replicators vs. Wraith bit, too.

In all...I'm SO anxious to watch it all!

oooh, nice resolution, even if it was a bit of a Greek deux ex machina. So the replicators are off attacking the wraith, leaving room for new enemies.

Another great ep! :D

I have a confession to make: I did not really love Elizabeth before tonight -- seldom really even liked her (nothing to do with Torri, I love Jessica Steen and didn't like the character back then, either, but I can't pinpoint why). And of course now it's a little late to finally get fond of the character. :headdesk: Story of my life ...

I just finished watching "Lifeline" and have to ask: is that huge, highly venomous snake on the mainland of the new planet a shout out to David Hewlett's "Boa vs. Python"? That bit made me snicker.

I really enjoyed this episode, despite the apparent loss of a favorite character (they're all my favorites, truth be told). Geeky 'Gate fan that I am, I loved Sam's reply of "I know" to John's statement that he'd find Elizabeth if she was alive for so many reasons, not the least of which was that it made me think of Sam's efforts to bring Jack home during the SG-1 episode "100 Days".

My thanks to you and the rest of the cast and crew for putting in all of the extremely hard work that you do to bring SGA to the screen. I'm greatly looking forward to the rest of the season and keeping everything crossed that can be that we get a fifth season.

I may as well jump into the fun since it never seems to stop. Since some of your regular readers just couldn't stop talking about that website with the terrible people in it, I popped over to look at it and found some amusing reminders there I had forgotten that are apropos to the discussion here.

And the reminders were even more amusing coming back to this discussion about s/j being canon and a character arc in the series, etc. etc.

Outcries of 'canon' for that, but 'that guy in Washington' that they are banking so much on?

I know that you as showrunner can make whatever you want happen, but so far, just going by what is actually been done in the series, however it may have fallen through the cracks, there is nothing in the series that ever said Jack was in Washington. In fact, it was one of the biggest fan complaints that it was never identified where Jack was.

I know you told us in your blog he was in Washington and we kept waiting to hear it appear in the series to see what context and it never did. Makes one wonder if you got outvoted by whoever made the decisions on that show and why...

... perhaps Jack got kicked upstairs to Norad -- do they need generals up there -- perhaps he's the one with the finger on the button -- now that's a scary thought with his proclivity to play with things...

... perhaps he's hiding out in Daniel's apartment so nobody else can coming looking for him, ruining his barbecues...

... or perhaps he's at the actual Air Force Base or Academy... point is, that there is nothing in the series to say 'that man in Washington' is Jack.

In fact, the only series location given to Jack is Malibu... and interestingly, only Daniel seemed to know he was there.

And yet, apparently the series did give us a 'man from Washington'... Washington State... Joe the Barber.

Is that the guy Carter is pining for -- is she one of those women who fall for their hairdresser? Is that why her hair is now long? She won't let anyone but her beloved 'that man from Washington' cut her hair?

As for your priority to get Michael Shanks to Atlantis in season 5 -- well, it has always seemed to be Jack's priority to keep Daniel out of Atlantis -- each time the subject of Daniel going to Atlantis seemed to come up in the series, Jack nixed the idea and basically said he needed Daniel with him.

Hmmmm -- maybe the series IS more like Boston Legal than I thought.

And finally when Daniel puts his foot down and packs his bags and books his transport, Vala shows up with prisoner bracelets from some source we never see. Is one of the deleted scenes of '200' Vala exclaiming, "That's General Jack? He looks a lot like the Pirate Jack I got the bracelets from."

For it seems in the 'priority' business, Jack is being a lot more successful in his priority of keeping Daniel out of Atlantis than you are with your priority of getting Michael into it.

In fact, the only hint of Jack agreeing to anyone going to Atlantis was that scene where Daniel told Sam that Jack had just told him no again and Sam told him she had talked Jack into letting one person go and she would try to make that be Daniel -- perhaps she didn't understand that Jack telling Daniel no and her essentially volunteering shows which one Jack thought he could spare... maybe he was thinking he wouldn't have to worry about her popping in on any more barbecues when he's trying to romance someone.

All fun aside, I think Stargate, like all shows, does better when it leaves things like this to everybody's own interpretations. Fans of various shows for decades have screamed for resolutions for their favorite couples... and when they get them, history has shown most of the shows go downhill into ratings slump and cancellation.

Well I sure hope you guys get rid of the Replicators during Be All My Sins Remember'd or you definitely will loose this fan. Lifeline showed another episode of boring, predictable "nanite" based storylines that you producers/writers just won't let go of. McKay can rewrite the Replicator basecode, but conveniently he can't find the schematics or research materials on how to make ZPMs? In my opinion, this is the problem with not having a over-all season/series plan and writing by committee. Suspend disbelief for one action, but not another because that would get rid of a lot of the problems the characters face every episode. Hopefully, the first two episodes had to be this way to complete the season 3 finale and now you will impliment the long-story arcs you and Paul Mullie have been talking about. If the stories don't pick-up in writing quality, I think you had better start writing that new series pitch and pilot, because I don't think you will get a 5th season. It is sad, because the special effects are top-notch, too bad the stories don't rise up to the same level. I really enjoyed the original concept of SGA instead of the boring-fest that SG-1 had become. Unfortunately, it seems to have gotten bogged down, because no one planned out a multi-year storyline for the series. This is the problem I see today with the way a lot of science fiction is written because the lack of a visionary writer and/or Production companies worrying about how shows will look in syndication. Some have tried like BSG, but that has lost direction also. I'm sure some people liked it, so for your sake I hope it was enough.

Tesajb said...

I think thus far, it is the best season yet too.

Today's episode gave me that warm glowy, angsty, Farscape feeling I love so much. Connections and emotions revealed, showing those involved are emotionally vulnerable and feel things the way the rest of us do. This was nice to see, or at least the beginnings of it.

That's really been my only issue with Scifi in general: toned down emotion. I mean look at Spock for frickin sake! No emotion at all! =P

Okay so this post was unusually serious for my taste. Therefore I shall end it by saying I think it's weird when people wear their bluetooth earpieces at all times. =)

I was really sad knowing Weir would disappear from atlantis in season 4, however, you will get some credit for it's not one of those deaths that will be forgotten in the next episode (I hope) Apollo didn't discover her signature, which means she's fully a replicator now? (as full as a human can be), could cause interesting plots in the future episodes... /shuns away from spoilers.

I hope you're going to keep up with the blog and who knows maybe Joe's book review will become an iconic event. I know I've certainly read some books I would never have considered previously. Thanks again from Cornwall.

Thumbs-up to you guys on Adrift and Lifeline, Joe. Like many others I was wary about this season, but I can see me tuning in if the episodes are going to be as exciting as these two were.

(haha, in Adrift my leg hurt FOR Zelenka getting hit by that microasteroid. Ouch.)

Enjoy your Thanksgiving weekend! Eat, drink, be merry...eat some more. =D

bonsoir Joe,

Congrats on jumping the final hurdle of the season. Here's hoping you get to come back next year to enjoy the ride all over again!

Lifeline was fantastic! I'll avoid the whole spoiler issue by not getting into specifics, but I really enjoyed the episode. I thought it was going one way and it ended up going another. (That wacky Carl Binder.) Bravo!

Hi Joe,

Just wanted to wish you a relaxing break. Thanks for sharing your daily thoughts with us, for making us laugh and for educating us on the finer points of real chocolate appreciation!

Whatever happens with a 5th season pick-up (personally I am optimistic), the whole team on SGA have given scifi fandom a legacy of wonderful TV - a legacy that we will continue to enjoy, speculate about and weave an imaginary world around for years to come.

And ..... It's not over yet!!!

Sleep tight and sweet dreams ..... you'll need the reserves when S5 gets the go-ahead!!!

I just want to express my heartfelt thanks for another season of excellent television. If the first three episodes I have seen (thank iTunes for one of those) are any indication, I can't wait for more. I personally hope you spend the "off season" spinning stories for season 5! Thanks again!

OK, it's just not fair to read about you talking wrap-up when I am just getting really excited about *starting* the season! I do think the (whole two) shows I've seen feel richer and more visceral somehow, especially as I was yelling at the team to GO HOME and forget the whole wraith reprogramming thing last night in "Lifeline", hee.

I was quite glad to read your rant on the DVR connundrum (and personally heard no shirking of responsibility in your tone...) As an avid fan of entertainment, a bonafide internet-junkie entrepreneur, and a superfan of Atlantis, I can't help but look for the win/win as Television moves into a new era of consumer behavior.

Here's my question: I don't understand the relationship between the production side and the distribution side well enough to pin down where innovation and new ideas for creating entertainment can/should happen. In your opinion, as an industry insider, do you think the producers will go different routes to find financial resources and new venues for their shows, sidestepping distributers like SciFi, NBC, etc. altogether?

Or will the distributers/networks absorb the new ways audiences are behaving and drive the innovation to monetize those differently?

Or is that too stupid a question to even make sense out of? ;-) Just understand that the question comes from an optimistic desire to have my cake (as an entrepreneur who knows the money has to come from somewhere) and eat it too (spoiled consumer, aka. tivo baby).

In any case, thanks for an awesome show that takes me to places I otherwise couldn't go!

Thanks to EVERYONE for all their hard work this year.

Weird that you are wrapping season 4 while we are just unwrapping it.

I am looking forward to the rest of the season!

I know this question ranks up there with "are we there yet" but I can't help myself... any idea when we might know about the number 5, a penta-ultimate season, i.e. next year?

:>)

Thanks.

Have a restful break.

How is your first day on hiatus? Are you bored yet? LOL.

Okay, so I know i've been a pain in the ass lately, but there's something i've been waiting to ask you for ages. (And i'm not admitting to anything, but the chocolate cake was lovely.) :P

*cough*

Moving swiftly on. In Lifeline when McKay ties in the AR weapon to the cloak and then activates the AR field, is there a reason why Elizabeth's isn't killed while she's in the AR field? I know there's probably an explanation, I just don't know what it is. In the Return, when Rodney did the same thing on a larger scale, we saw the little buggars obliterated inside the field. So, my very long-winded question is, why didn't they affect Elizabeth's nanites? Please Mr M, can you put me out of my misery? I'd add that i'll never ask you anything again, and that i'll behave from now on, but i'd be lying. Soooo? *begs*

If it's too spoilery, shall I email you instead? :D

*hugs*

Oh before I go, what was the final count on the shirless Shep scenes? Five.. ten? :P

To hell with leaving things open to everyone's interpretation. That's crap writing. If you guys really want to say something with your episodes, then you have to be braver when it comes to leaving out "ambiguity". No great author ever pandered to the masses, or feared to decide where the characters were going. Nutter fans who want to preserve their own perfect fantasies about the characters can sod off. Braver writing = Better ratings.

Hope you don't mind, but I just wanted to stop by and tell you how much I miss SG1. I know SG1 had 10 great years, however, Friday nights just isn't the same anymore for me. Suffering through Flash Gordon, which I refuse to do anymore, just reinforces the fact that SG1 is no longer on before Atlantis.

I don't know if you still keep in contact with the SG1 cast besides Amanda, but if you do, would you please pass on from me that they are truly missed.

Thanks

I have to say, Lifeline last night was one of the best episodes of Atlantis I've seen. I haven't bought any of the Atlantis seasons on DVD, but if season 4 keeps it up, that might change.

According to Alex Levine's blog on SciFi.com, you'll be going to Chris Judge's Halloween party as Heart Burn. Is that true?

hi, joe,

i was talking to my mom about last night's atlantis ep. she's new to the show too, but since i'm a part of fandom, i know more than her and was explaining some stuff. but anyways, when i was finished, i said to her, "this show (atlantis) has got me excited about 'stargate' again."

i just wanted you to know that, because i totally meant it. i haven't felt this excited by anything stargate since season 8 of sg1. thank you. :)

As one of the lucky few who got a pleasant surprise from iTunes last week, I'd really like you tell Rob next time you see him that he has become one heck of a great director. I still can't stand Carter and that final scene was horribly unconvincing but in every other way Doppelganger rocked!

Hi Joe,

any news when MGM is going to show us the full trailer of The Ark of Truth?

Many thanks for another great episode last night! At least so far, I think you and everyone who worked on season 4 have a right to be proud. I am sure that I will enjoy the rest of the season as much as I enjoyed Adrift and Lifeline. I fervently hope we will get a season 5.

You're going to Judge's halloween party? Could you please take lots and lots of pictures and post them for us? Please Joe. I'd love to see some pictures of Shanks, Tapping and Judge together in costume - possibly another 'Jack's angels pose'. Please Joe?!?!

Joe - I'm a bit at a loss with some of your blog posters, the anti-Season 4 folks - I assume they are "SaveCarsonBeckett" folks - and their active lobbying against a show they claim to no longer watch. Firstly, do these people have lives? I know you cannot possibly answer this question, really, but their actions - and mostly their fragmented messages to you on the blog - simply dumbfound me. If I no longer like a tv show, for whatever reason, I simply stop watching. I've pretty much stopped watching all network TV, really, preferring to find my entertainment elsewhere. However, I don't stalk the producers/writers/creators of the shows I USED TO WATCH! Now, I must be honest, when I heard that Carter was going to replace Weir on SGA, I didn't like the idea initially. Don't get me wrong, I think Amanda Tapping and the Carter character are great - it's just that after all the "fighting to keep Sheppard" as head of the military in Atlantis, I question bringing in a colonel of higher rank (time in if she's not a bird colonel by now) into the mix - and I don't want her to overshadow Rodney, since I simply love him. BUT, you guys are making a TV show, for crying out loud, and characters change. We'll (we as in my husband and I) watch, we'll enjoy, we'll buy the DVDs, and we'll go on with our lives since we actually have them. Do these people have anything else to do but e-mail you, complain on blogs, and actively try to stop a show that I enjoy? AND, how do they know if the shows without Beckett and with Carter are good or not if they don't watch them? Too logical? Well, sorry for going on. Enjoy any chocolate you may come across soon, and I really hope SciFi give you guys a go for season 5. Thanks, Ann in St. Paul, MN

Great big thank you for bringing back Carson Beckett and Michael Kenmore, even though is the last two part episode from the fourth season. This makes very happy with their unsettled relationship from Misbegotten. I would love to see more what you do with these two, like what you have done with Rodney and Sheppard in the series. I hope there is more conversion between Beckett and Michael.
