October 16, 2007

Well, my birthday week celebrations kicked off last night with dinner at La Buca compliments of one Robert C. Cooper and his lovely wife Hillary. Since it was really a celebratory meal, I won’t offer a critique. Instead, I will just say it was great company and we enjoyed pumpkin ravioli with safe and toasted hazelnuts (the pasta shell was somewhat overcooked and I found the hazelnuts too pronounced as they overpowered the more subtle filling), skate wing (a delicious but surprisingly not-all-that-popular fish [fisherman Carl claims he tosses them back whenever he accidentally catches them] but nevertheless one that seems to be finding its way onto restaurant menus [Speaking of atypical things showing up on restaurant menus - I’m reminded of the grey squirrel pancakes being served up at The Famous Wild Board Hotel in Cumbria. Why grey? Are they that much tastier than the brown ones?]), veal cheeks in red wine sauce served with saffron and parmesan risotto (great risotto and fork-friendly meat but the red wine sauce was too thing), tiramisu (an okay version), and chestnut canoli (that Fondy enjoyed for the same reason I didn’t: it wasn’t that sweet).

This morning, I started my actual birth day by picking up a two-tiered turd sitting on the lower downstairs landing. In many places, this is considered very fortuitous and so I marveled over my good luck - before flushing it and disinfecting the spot with hydrogen peroxide. I then went online and checked my horoscope. According to the site:

“If October 16th is your birthday you have a fair to above average lung capacity, but an innate difficulty mastering kanji and woodwind instruments. In general, the people in your life like you slightly less than you believe they do. You are prone to inexplicable rashes, tuneless humming, and rooting for the losing team in the big championship game. Also, someone named Frederique is conspiring against you.”

Frederique?

I then checked my blog and was delighted to see not only a slew of best birthday wishes from many of you, but a message from writer-director-producer-chef Robert Cooper promising to swing by the blog this weekend to answer our Doppelganger-related questions. Awesome! I’ve got a bunch!

I went into the office this morning and found a multi-colored construction paper cut-out HB (Hemoglobin? Half Back? House Bill?) AND cake complete with candles. Although both Lawren and Marty G. took credit, I’m more inclined to believe the wonderful Tanja Balic was responsible. Well, either her or the artistic Alex Levine. Anyway, while I was in, I joined Marty G. and Paul for a special screening of The Last Man director’s cut. A great season-ender (and a bit of a tearjerker - I defy you not to cry or feel sad or pity or slightly dizzy) with a final shot that will have fandom buzzing from final fade to the opening shot of season five.

When I arrived home, there was a selection of box awaiting me. It was from my sister Andria. Inside: Montreal chocolates! After a quick trip downtown where Fondy treated me to my birthday lunch (yerm) I returned home and sampled a wide selection of gift chocolates - approximately a dozen in all. Very good assortments all around highlighted by Au Festin de Babette’s Camembert en Chocolat and Les Chocolats de Chloe’s Fleur de Sel chocolate.

Feeling a little queasy. But good queasy.

Today’s pics: Hey check out my new Atlantis phone (if you forget to pause after flipping it open, the mini kawoosh will take off your ear!), last night’s dinner, Fondy gifts me with my favorite matcha, and sis's chocolates.

Today’s video: None. It’s my birthday!

Today’s mailbag: None. It’s my birthday!

Tanjobi omedeto! Also, happy birthday! Thanks again for all the information and entertainment you’ve provided here, not least the background on “Reunion”, and, of course, your work on the show itself, not least “Reunion”, which was an outstanding episode. All the best for the coming year, including, but not limited to, Season 5.

hey, i want an atlantis phone too!! :o

k, question. since you like 'house' and huge laurie; if you could get huge to do an ep of atlantis, what kind of character would you have him play?

my answer; i went between a goauld or some butt-head from the IOA. i'm leaning towards the IOA guy because i think huge could play him closer to his infamous 'house' persona. (and isn't that what we really want to see again?:p)

so what kind of character?

anonymous screeched: [...] "I don't need Carter to become a Bush clone in one of my favorite shows... especially in just a lame attempt to make her look strong."

LOL! your whole post has got to be a joke! OR, you need better material to justify your anti carter sentiments.>>>>>>

Obviously, Sally, you need to go back and read my entire post more carefully. Something you should have done before you leaped in with your all-too-obvious, but inaccurate judgment. It might help you understand the basis for the concluding statement which you have now pulled out of context.

And I don't have to get better material or justify anything to you... my opinion of a scene is my opinion and as such, is just as valid as your own.

If you don't agree with me, why don't you try offering up a substantial argument on the scene in question rather than an inappropriate assessment of my opinion.

Happy Birthday! (all the best people are born in October, its a horoscopial fact [born oct 31st here])

You review/eat at all the places that serve great lunch and dinner menus, but is there anywhere in Van that has a fantastic breakfast menu?

And also, have you writers ever considered using "Vegemite" as a weapon against the Wraith? (Theres enough salt in it to preserve a human from the inside, if you have to much of it I swear) (Ok, so I'm Australian and I love my Vegemite, but sometimes there is too much of a good thing... [but it does taste good with lindt chocolate....])

*cough* hope you had a fantasmagorically brilliant day. :)

It looks like your birthday-week will be great fun. Do you think for one of your birthday celebration wishes you'll challenge someone from the office to a chocolate eating contest. I'd recommend offering them the option of ice-cream based treats or single chocolates. I think the ice cream challenge would be more difficult for the uninitiated.

Best of luck!

Hi Joe -- Happy birthday - wishing you a great day, but don't overdose on the chocolate.

I've been reading your blog for some time and wanted to thank you for the time and effort you expend with daily comments, updates, photos and videos.

We're 3 episodes into Season 4 and I'm absolutely enjoying the direction Atlantis is going in. There's been several "I didn't see that coming" moments, especailly in Lifeline and Reunion. This is quality viewing. SciFi et al would be foolish not to renew Atlantis for Season 4-5-6, etc. I work in film and know quality when I see it.

A non-Atlantis question for you: If you could invite 2 historical figures (past or present) to your house for a gathering (brunch/lunch, just good food) who would you invite and why?

Many thanks and happy day.

Big birthday congrats, you've survived one more year. It kind of changes after you turn 25 from celebrating being one year older, into celebrating the fact that you're alive for one more year. Kind of funny that way, some people might disagree with me, but then, why is it that most people will want their birthday celebrated, yet not want to give away their age? Anyways, happy birthday, and I hope you get a lot of gifts and hopes you had an amazing birthday.

And I just have to say that I am appalled, absolutely appalled. How come you have been left the task of updating this blog on your B-Day? Couldn't Cookie Monster, Baron Destructo, or any of the myriad others who have graced your blog from time to time have stepped in to give you a respite on this day as their gift to you?

Okay, I can understand the Baron not doing it, he is otherwise occupied with world domination after all, but the others? For shame!

Oh, and it is good luck to have to pick up a "turd". Much better than the alternative of stepping in it and then having to clean it up. Yuck!

Also, being the chocoholic you seem to be, have you tried Denman Island Chocolates?

Oh snap! I just read that Scifi ponied up 14 million for the rights to air Lost repeats starting next fall. Are you worried at all that Scifi could start using repeats of network shows in lieu of original programming? I mean, if a repeat of Heroes, Lost, or Bionic Woman can get a 1.0 or so, then what is the incentive for Scifi to renew Atlantis for 25-40 million if it can only garner ratings of a 1.2 or so? I don't know about you, but I'm worried that Scifi is running out of money to allocate towards Atlantis' fifth season.

Re the grey squirrels... I know a place that serves grey squirrel pie LOL. The reason for grey rather than red: Red squirrels are the indigenous, and protected, species; the grey squirrels were imported (and released into the wild) by some idiot, and they are regarded as a pest as they are bigger and have chased the red ones from their habitat. :(

My most worthy nemesis,

I wish you a foul anniversary of the most tragic affair of your birth. I commemorated the day by throwing darts at your picture. I hope your birthday candles set off the smoke alarm then as you frantically race to turn it off, thrashing about like a crane dancing to Chinese rap, you slip and fall onto your cake, break the table, then your dog eats the cake and gets FAT and one day you mistake him for a sausage and EAT HIM!

Scathingly yours,

P.S.

That poop you found downstairs? Yah - that was from me. It took a lot of skill to balance those two tiers so I hope you appreciated it and took a picture.

Regarding grey squirrel v red squirrel on the menu. In the UK, red squirrels are a protected species whereas the grey squirrel is regarded as a pest. The red squirrel population has declined drastically since the grey's introduction from North America. Unfortunately not all North American imports are as welcome as Stargate.

I like how you slyly inserted a critique of the food you weren't going to critique. :)

But what's the difference between a cannoli and a canneloni? I also don't like cannolis that much because the ricotta filling is usually too sweet for my tastes.

And seriously, how cute is Fondy in that picture? (A: very cute)

Lastly, I loved the behind-the-script commentary you did for Reunion, and I'm glad Robert Cooper has agreed to tackle Doppelganger -- can this be a semi-regular feature from now on? I think the commentaries and Mission Directives are the most interesting value-added features on the DVDs. (Well that, and the introduction of "Danger" Beckett...)

Hi Joe,

Hope you had a wonderful birthday! And, thanks for updating your blog, even though it was your birthday, when you could have been doing something better
:-)

I have a question that I hope you can answer. In an interview that RDA did with a radio station in Ireland (http://rdanderson.com/. See the Sept. 25 radio interview with RTE 2fm), he mentioned that Brad Wright has approached him about doing a third Stargate movie, with a more expanded Jack O'Neill role. Can you tell us anything more about this third movie? Is Brad in the midst of developing the script? Has MGM committed to providing financial support, even though the first two movies have yet to be released, and therefore the financial payback has yet to be determined? Will the other SG1 cast members be involved?

Thanks very much!
Iggy

Happy Birthday I hope it's been good.

Being a Brit I know I have no chance of influencing Sci-Fi's decision to renew Atlantis, which I really hope they do, I've got all the boxsets region 2 but I was just wondering if there was any way for all of us (both US fans and the rest of the world) to influence Sci-Fi's decision besides tuning into watch it? Mass e-mails perhaps?

If broadcast companies admit that the Nielsen ratings are not exactly accurate across the board then why don't Sci-Fi take things like the Save Carson Beckett group and gateworld.net into consideration when determining a shows future and fan support?

Thanks very much,

Happy Birthday again.

Does it come equipped with an iris to block unwanted calls? "To complete your call to Mr. Mallozzi, please enter your GDO now..."

First of all, Happy Birthday!

Second of all, I was listening to NPR yesterday morning, when it announced that the writers guild is planning to strike next month apparently affecting network television shows and movies. What wasn't clear to me was whether the strike included writers for cable television. It seemed to me that that would be the case. Is this going to affect Atlantis if it were cleared for a season 5? Any thoughts?

First, uh.. oops. Happy Birthday! If it's any consolation, my friends who had their b-day on the 9th still haven't gotten gifts from me.

Second, some questions that have surfaced recently: 1) Team designations. The teams out of the SGC are called SG-1, SG-2, etc, does Atlantis have any such team designations? 2) When you guys brought in Jonas in "Meridian" (SG-1 Season 5), were you already planning on having him come back for Season 6? Who's responsible for creating the character of Jonas? If you hadn't have had Jonas in Season 6, was there another character you had in mind?

PS: I'm loving Season 4 of Atlantis so far! You guys did an awesome job!

I'm horribly late with this, but I still wanted to wish you a happy belated birthday!

Will there be any romantic/sexual entanglements detrimental to Atlantis this year?

By all that's holy Joe, tell us there won't be any romantic/sexual entanglements detrimental or otherwise. We want a SciFi show, not Lifetime.

Yet another belated happy birthday! Hope you enjoyed your day, despite the, uh, messy start. :-)

Joe,

I think you mentioned this before, but do you and Fondy attend any Halloween festivites? My husband and I (being the faithful theatre people we are) attend a huge costume party our friend's throw every year. This year we're going as The Joker and Harley Quinn.

Will you and Fondy dress up? Do you get many trick or treaters? We bought our cat a Darth Vader costume one year, but he just laid prone in the floor until we took it off. Do the doggies participate?

P.S.

If you happen to see two maniacal clowns (bent on the destruction of Batman) on your door for trick-or-treating....you will give out the "expensive" chocolate, right. I hear the cute female (should they turn up) really would like to try the plumb stuff. Its been said by...people... you know. I wouldn't know personally.

Envy! I want a phone like that! Nice tease on "The Last Man" I cannot wait to see it.

Oh, С днём рождения! (Happy Birthday!)

Ever had Russian chocolate?

Happy birthday, belated!

If The Last Man is as much a tear-jerker as you say, I will most definitely be in tears. I tear up with less prompting from Atlantis episodes - a little sentimental here. This is a little known secret of mine. I avoid showing emotions in public, but get me watching a sad, emotional, sentimental program ALONE and I can turn into mush.

Your horoscopes sound more exotic than the norm. Will you continue providing them or is this a passing fancy?

Hello!
Hope you had a nice birthday. I have a quick question regarding Reunion. Why did Sam bring her SG1 BDU's with her to Atlantis? Just curious.

thanks

"Will there be any romantic/sexual entanglements detrimental to Atlantis this year?"

I would call Teyla's pregnancy a "sexual entanglement". Sorry to say, she has not been sleeping with Shep. I know that will devastate the few who want to watch "John and Teyla All The Way!", but most of us want good stories without the sexual romantic stuff taking up our precious 40 minutes each week.

Happy Birthday!

I have a question Joe. Does the ratings in syndication affect renewal for season 5? I read on gateworld's homepage that Atlantis dropped to 0.5 and the SG1 episode Morpheus got a 0.8. Does the Scifi channel take syndication ratings into consideration when making a decision?

So, are those phones going to be available to us minions then, or are they for the chosen few?

Short and sweet question. try not to fall off your chair. LOL. I was watching Lifeline again. :D And mcKay mentions about the huge venomous snake that lives on the mainland... anychance we'll get to see that in S4... or dare I say S5? *touches wood*

Is it to early to squee about S5 yet?

Didn't I say this was going to be short and sweet? *looks at post*

*cough*

Thanks for the goodies.

*hugs*
