Fondy and I celebrated my birthday with dinner at Quattro’s. Yes, on the one hand it was the scene of that gangland-style shooting several weeks back; on the other hand, their carpaccio and ravioli Piemontese are to die for. In all fairness, such an incident could have happened anywhere and, really, at the end of the day it says less about the restaurant itself and more about an alleged gangster’s affinity for fine pasta. Anyway, our dinner was far less eventful last night. Fondy started with a Caesar salad while I went with the grilled fresh mozzarella wrapped with prosciutto and radicchio in a cherry vinaigrette. Pleasantly sweet and smoky. We also split an order of the carpaccio Senape - paper thin slices of melt-in-your-mouth beef topped with horseradish aioli, asiago cheese, and crispy shallots. For her main, Fondy went with the fusilli con rucola - beef tenderloin, tomato, arugula, while I opted for the heartier ravioli Piemontese - portabella mushroom-stuffed ravioli nestled in a porcini and mascarpone cream finished with white truffle oil. No dessert on this night as Fondy had already picked up my birthday cake (coincidentally, her favorite!) earlier in the day: a deliciously purple ube cake which I enjoyed with some pistachio ice cream and a healthy topping of Advokaat.
When I headed downstairs to the media room after cake, I was surprised by the sight of the massage table Fondy had purchased six months ago - all set up and ready to go. I was treated to a wonderful massage reminiscent of the one I enjoyed on my last trip to Hong Kong, complete with scented oils, dim lighting, soothing music - but minus the forehead triple knuckle rap that concluded my Shangri la experience. It was a delightful once-in-a-blue-moon treat. Interestingly enough, Fondy was complaining of lower back pain this morning. Even more interestingly enough, a stroll through the media room on my way to do my work-out this morning confirmed the massage table was still up and ready for further use.
Did a little work on the fourth pilot script today (al…most…finished…second…act…) and reached the 150 page mark of both The Legacy of Heorot and Lord Foul’s Bane. I’m alternating chapters and should be done in time for next week’s discussion. So far, I am enjoying one (though have issues with some aspects of narrative) and am positively NOT enjoying the other. More on that next week.
Well, I think it’s high time I got the dogs back in daycare. They do nothing but lie around all day like shiftless teens nursing recent break-ups. Seriously, there’s nothing sadder than a moping dog (well, maybe a drunk and depressed cat). I may drop them off for a day of fun and frolic this Friday as it looks like that’s the day we’ll be screening the Ark of Truth mix in North Van.
Today’s pics: Dinner at Quattro, the birthday boy (makes a wish, blows out candle, a celebration is in order), them shamefully lazy dogs.
Today’s video: Click on the date to see Jodelle hitch a ride with David H. on the way to set.
Today’s mailbag:
WingedPegasus writes: “What other two eps will you be deconstructing?”
Answer: This Mortal Coil and Kindred I.
Linzi writes: “ Joe, I think you've misunderstood what Joe F was saying here. He specifically answered, after a fan asked if TPTB had taken Sheppard anywhere he didn't want his character to go that that hadn't happened in any specific episode - so he wasn't talking about Harmony here.”
Answer: Actually, it was specifically in reference to Harmony because this exact issue came up only once all season and that was during a discussion of the Harmony script.
Wolfen writes: “Clicky for your pressie (AKA, that Utena pic I asked you about ^_~).”
Answer: Wow! Great artwork! I tried to leave a comment but couldn’t figure out how, so I’m conveying the thumbs up here.
Anonymous #1 writes: “You said that you would be watching 'Arc of Truth' this weekend with the rest of the gang. Does the rest of the gang include the main actors that were in it that still reside in the area such as Mr. Shanks, Ms. Tapping and Mr. Judge? Are they invited to the viewing so that they can see the finished product and possibly critique their performance?”
Answer: They will be invited to the premiere screening. What we are attending (probably this Friday) is a screening of the mix.
Dilemma writes: “Have you read novels 'The De Vinci Code' and 'Angels and Deamons' by Dan Brown?”
Answer: Not my cup of tea. My wife has enjoyed them however.
Semisweet writes: “Can you tell us who created each of the original SGA characters... Weir,Sheppard,McKay,Ford,Beckett,Teyla and Zelenka? Also Ronan, too, if you wouldn't mind.”
Answer: All of the original characters are compliments of series creators Brad Wright and Robert Cooper. The Ronon character was the brainchild of RCC.
Anonymous #2 writes: “With SG-1 over, what is the fate of the SGC set?”
Answer: That remains to be seen.
Elizabeth writes: “Is there ever possibly going to be a Stargate Atlatnis christmas episode?”
Answer: Highly unlikely.
Rac76 writes: “Do you eat anything normal? Like a simple peanut butter and jelly sandwich or turkey sandwich, every once in a while??”
Answer: I had a can of chili for lunch. Unfortunately, I forgot to take a picture.
Jessica writes: Good or bad, I’m guessing some sort of news before the end of next week.
JoanlovesChachi writes: “Would you still have married Fondy if she were a picky eater?”
Answer: I read your question aloud to Fondy and she answered “No.”
Moe Jacuzzi writes: “I wish you a foul anniversary of the most tragic affair of your birth…”
Answer: Say, your middle name wouldn’t happen to be Frederique would it?
Namiko writes: “But what's the difference between a cannoli and a canneloni?”
Answer: Damn. Good catch. I meant to write canoli (an Italian dessert which is basically a tubular pastry shell surrounding either a marscapone cheese or ricotta cream filling), not cannelloni (which is a more savory dish of ricotta cheese, and occasionally meat, stuffed in a rolled pasta sheet and baked in tomato sauce).

I can't get the date to work. I am sad. Do you ever want to slap the actors upside the head with a plate of canolli??
Darn, video link isn't working. Waaaaaaah!
Is your birthday cake finished yet? There's nothing like eating birthday cake the day (or two) after blowing out the candle. :)
Haha, it's up now. Give the man a chance to upload it! :P
Did Fondy do the massaging? I'm from HK and I've yet to enjoy a massage from there... next time I go back, I s'pose.
Fourth pilot?! I really hope to see more of your work in the future... but hopefully not for awhile yet- I'm loving Atlantis at the moment.
regarding the video, a good title, would be, all aboard the hewlett train!
According to Joe Flanigan he goes "to town on the producers and writers for the actors all the time". Is this true?
That spray bottle on the bench... that wouldn't happen to be for doggie type accidents would it?
While I understand the need to have pilot scripts ready to go...here's hoping you don't need them for several more years!!!
I know you went through this with SG1 on several occassions, and it turned out alright. Still have my fingers and toes crossed :-)
Great birthday pics! Do you have a particular method for choosing what to eat, or just go as the mood strikes the instant it's time to eat?
Looks like the birthday was fab...
Just one question tho'... "purple ube???"
As Linzi wrote, Joe F. specified in his Q&A in Melbourne that, when he was talking about making Sheppard more or less “earnest”, he was *not* referring to any specific episode. Now you’ve said, twice, that he *was* referring to “Harmony”. Could it be that Joe F. was referring to all four seasons in general, and not to Season 4 in particular, *and* was using “earnest” loosely, not with reference to one specific incident? Pardon all the asterisks, but, as you may well know, this has given rise to some debate on the internet, and, while it’s a minor point, it’s a puzzling one.
Wow - that cake is awesome in its purpleness. Although, judging by the third photo of you with it, it seems that proximity to the purpleness can cause spontaneous hand loss. I'm sorry you have no hands now, and congratulate you on your accomplishment in posting this blog by typing with your toes. I'm glad to know your career as a writer has not been ended by an unfortunate ube incident.
Also - massage? You lucky boy!
Do you ever take scripts for SGA from outside the circle of writers the series currently uses?
(no, I don't write scripts...just curious)
Joe,
Are you going to VCON (Vancouver Sci-Fi and Fantasy Convention) this weekend? I thought I'd stop by and check it out, although the website doesn't make it sound that appealing. You'd think a city as large as Vancouver would have a more lively fan base.
Happy belated birthday! I hope it was a nice one (and you avoided all Frederiques...)
It never occurred to me that something untoward might happen to the SGC set. You have to promise, if anything does happen to it, that you will save hundreds of artifacts--that includes any and all flocking.
Question, which of the three main female characters (Sam, Weir and Teyla) do you find the most fun to write?
Later,
Royal
Hi Joe,
You certainly don't mind vibrant foods. However, by way of limited online images of you, you appear to dress/cover yourself so darkly. Why?
Many celebrities have "wardrobe personnel" or clothing contracts or image consultants prescribing their apparel... any influencial sources for your wardrobe selection?
Note: From what I've seen you appear to be a very handsome person. (I have to qualify that, because ...well, I don't know you and I've met some very ugly but outwardly beautiful people.) Have you ever worn a colorful Hawaiian shirt or a Jamaican tie-dye shirt?
Do you like the mystery of dark apparel?
:)
...Eboni
I'm interested to read your responses to the book club book. I, regrettably, haven't had time to do recreational reading this month...
I see from the mailbag that you might have found your "Frederique" :) Witty as ever, Joe.
Thanks for answering my comment but no christmas episode! Why not? It would be fun. Is there maybe the slightest possibility of there being a Christmas episode? Like a 0.00025% chance? It doesn't have to be the main storyline it could be Story B, or C, or Z. If not Christmas, how about Hannukkah? Purim? St. Patricks Day? Thanksgiving? Ramadan? Birthday? Groundhog Day?
One candle on the birthday cake. You look kind of old for being only one years old. This will not be helpful when you are 80.
Please, please, please just one Christmas episode! That is all I ask! Please, sir, I beseech you!
Happy B-Day Joe!

Will there be any romantic/sexual entanglements detrimental to Atlantis this year?
Joe has been quite discreet with the tension between characters and their “relationships” have been quite true to a semi-militaristic setting sci-fi or otherwise. TPTB are doing an excellent job.
If one wants OVERT romance/entanglements/sexuality, then here’s a vid for you:

Do syndication ratings play any role in determining whether or not a series is renewed?
According to Joe F, Sheppard's middle name was going to be Earnest but he fought tooth and nail for it to be changed to Harmony, hence this current horrible, horrible confusion.
Also according to Joe F he enjoys long walks on the beach and being tickled by Ecuadorian monkeys, but really, that's neither here nor there.
Have you ever thought about filming a Very Special Arbour Day SGA episode? They could plant a tree and watch it float out into the ocean.
You included this in your Q&A section:
Jessica writes: Good or bad, I’m guessing some sort of news before the end of next week.
But you didn't put your Answer. What were you going to write?
Wow you made a wish, blew out the candle and your PC didn't turn into a Mac. There is no justice in the world. :-)
hi, joe,
in 'reunion', when sam told sheppard that he was on the short list for possible commanders; was mitchell on that list too?
sally :)
Why must you taunt me with delicious purple confections?
Great B-day pics by the way. =D
Is there any truth to the rumors that Jason Momoa shaved his head?
Christmas episodes are kind of lame and cliched, I for one am glad there isn't one.
Happy Birthday from California! Just a question that's been eating away at me...are we EVER going to find out more about Ronan's gun? Thanks for blogging!
Glad you liked it! ^^ And yeah, you'd have to be a member to leave comments at devART. But a comment here worked just as well! :)
Thanks for the cute vid today! Between this and that other vid where she was playing with the prop, Jodelle seems very attatched to DH. ;)
Ahhhh, cute, happy birthday cake pics, Joe! :) Awesome looking food, too! Just ate, and they still make me hungry!!! And the dogs. Could they be cuter?????
Fondy is such a sweetie to give you a birthday massage (thanks for not getting into the later details, knowmesayin'?). :)
Can't wait for the Book Club discussion next week, though it looks like I'll have to. I have a few things to say (imagine that?) about Lord Foul's Bane!
I've seen a moping dog. I've seen a drunk dog - not very pretty when you don't know it's drunk (speaking from experience) - and I've seen a depressed cat, but I've never seen a drunk cat. Do tell!
Thanks for not making A Very Merry Atlantis! I can see/hear how Shep explains "Merry Christmas!" to Ronon, and it's funny, but not Stargate by any means!
RUSH on!
eddy
Joe where can i get an Atlantis cell phone?is that a Razor?
Happy birthday!
connaissez-vous les taux d'audience de lifeline et de reunion?
vous ne pouvez pas mettre une video de this mortail coil (comme pour harmony)!!!
Et BON ANNIVERSAIRE!!!
Hi Joe! Congratulations! Happy Birthday!
The food it seems very good...
Belated Happy Birthday to you Joe!
Quick questions (apologies if it has already been answered).
Does season 4 of SGA take place after the new SG1 movies? I ask this because I assume Carter would not have left during the Ori campaign.
Will Teal'c advanced age play any role/ be relevant in the new films?
Regards,
UNSRM (can't get my account to work right now!)
Where are the photos of you on the massage table?
What the hell was that third dish? The thing that came immediately to mind was the Horta from Star Trek.
My goodness. I actually drooled upon looking at the food pictures. And it's 6am!
hi, joe,
in 'reunion', when sam told sheppard that he was on the short list for possible commanders; was mitchell on that list too?
sally :)
Yes, Sally. Sam's a real person, and the shortlist was real. And of course they'll be able to tell you who else was on it. Insert rolling of eyes here.
Hi Joe,
In season 4, are we going to find out who the father of Teyla's baby is?
Will we see a jealous Sheppard?
Is there ever going to be an episode in Atlantis like SG-1's Window of Opportunity? That one has always been my favourite SG-1 episode, and The Nox.
I've always loved the SG-1 and Atlantis humour. I was wondering, who makes it up?
1)Will the level of warfare that Atlantis wages this year become more pronounced or proactive?
2)Can we expect more tense moments between Carter & Ronon this season like we saw in "Reunion"?
I know you said that you'd discuss it more next week - but is it "Lord Foul's Bane" that you're not enjoying? I too found it very difficult to get through and wasn't going to continue with the series - except that it had come so highly recomended to me. So I forced myself to pick up the second bood. HOLY COW - Half way through "The Illearth War" I was hooked and tore through that one and the rest of both trilogies(sp). I've re-read them several times now and enjoy Lord Foul much better now that I know what's going on.
If it is "Lord Foul" - I suggest that you struggle through and try the second...if it doesn't grab you half way through...you've at least made me happy..and really - what's more important than that?
Happy Birthday Joe!
Joe,
I've read that cannelloni and manicotti are the same thing. Do you know of any difference?
Thanks,
:D Skip
I'll join many others in wishing you (a bit belated) a VERRRY Chocolatey Happy Relaxed Birthday! My birthday present to you: I LOVE Carter being at the helm of Atlantis!!! This is coming from a long time SG-1 fan, who thought it'd never work. Two questions:
1) Where can I get me one of them SGA cell phones?
2)Any idea if Jason Momoa cut his dreads yet? If so, any reprecautions from TPTB?
Thanks!
Well seems you REALLY enjoyed your birth day, for several days actually, Good! all the best wishes for a good birthday came true.
Those dogs do look lazy, and they are taking Lulu with them, who is just a puppy and should be running around acting like a puppy.
I think is those comfy dog beds Fondy brought back from work, imagine having something that big and soft to lay on all day, you wouldn't want to leave either.
Have a question regarding dogs:
What do you guys do with them when both of you are at work? if you live them just be at home, are they ok after been alone 8 hours? do you get a lot of "accidents" if thats the case.
Thinking of getting a dog, and wonder about that.
Gah! Pugs! *Loffs*
P.S Was there ever any discussions about whether any other SG-1 cast members would go to Atlantis? Or was it only ever Carter/Amanda Tapping?
P.P.S I am gravely concerned about the amount of red meat you eat. Are you sure you don't have any cholesterol issues?
Hurrah! for the new season of Atlantis,
tinydancer
Please answer my questions. Why aren't there ever any holidays on Atlantis? The only thing that was close to a holiday was Elizabeth's birthday in Season One. Are there no calendars on Atlantis, or no one celebrates national holidays like Memorial Day, or no one clebrates birthdays (someone must have had a birthday in the past three years), or no one belongs to any form of religion hence no religious holidays like Ramadan, Hannukkah, or Easter? Thanks!
Aw Man! I missed your birthday. Belated Greetings venerable one.
dovil! You owe me a new monitor! Your comment had me spraying Coca-Cola everywhere!

Happy Birthday from California! Just a question that's been eating away at me...are we EVER going to find out more about Ronan's gun? Thanks for blogging!
Joe just answered that question about Ronon's gun two days ago when he said "stay tuned"!! I'm pretty sure that we will find out about the gun or "energy pistol" in Travelers.
Which leads me to my request to Joe that you need to talk Paul Mullie into giving a behind the scenes look into the writing and thought process for Travelers even if it is not as detailed as your info on Reunion.
In the TV Guide InFANity special you answered when asked about new spaceships that we would not be seeing a X-305, but a we would see a new Wraith Cruiser. Did you not think the Travelers' Ancient warship (not the Aurora-class but the other one, since I believe there are two of them) would be a new ship? Or is it because it doesn't last very long (What Ancient Warship does last long in the SGA Universe once our expedition comes across it? LOL) in the season so why bring it up?
Also in that show you say there are about 6 big plot twists that fans don't know about yet, can you say if one or more of these twists have already been shown?
Hope you get good news soon about Season 5 so we get more episodes in it with Larrin because I can never see enough shows with Jill Wagner in the cast as long as it isn't about Vampires!
In season 4, are we going to find out who the father of Teyla's baby is?
Will we see a jealous Sheppard?
If I see jealous Sheppard getting all angsty over this Teyla baby crap, I'm switching to Numbers!
Oh Blast!!! Happy Belated Birthday!! Looks like you had a great time! Oh and thanks for hanging in with us over the break before Season 5, yes I am very positive there will be a Season 5! We'd be lost and bored with out your humor and blog!
Hey Joe! I wonder, have you ever drawn a comparison between McKay & Sheppard and Daffy & Bugs?
For some reason, watching the cartoons, it reminded me of their snark-ishness. Or maybe I just watch SGA too much. XP
Hi Joe,
I just wanted to know if you got the Adrift official numbers yet and how did they compare? They released the other network's DVR playback numbers for that week on monday. Also do you know if Lifeline and Reunion had an uptick, stayed even, or sadly dipped? Thank you.
P.S. Season 4 is shaping up to be the best season of SGA to date. Thank you for all your hardwork and the cast and crews.
This has been really bugging me but how would you describe the Stargate to someone who doesn't even know the show?
Thanks for answering my question about the 'Arc of Truth' screening. Wow! A premiere screening that everyone including the actors (and I assume their families) will be going to is really special. Possibly a black tie affair? I know it probably won't be for awhile yet, but I would love to see some pictures of those attending if they don't mind you posting them.
Salut joseph!
désolé mon message sera court aujourd'hui car j'ai beaucoup de devoirs (vivement les vacances!)
Waaaouuuuuu!!! Super la video!
J'adore ces photo de vou§ ralal vous êtes trop sexy !!!!!Super beau votre gateaux d'anniversaire, il devait être aussi trés bon^^!
Trop adorable vos chiens!
Bon, je doit deja y aller!
Gros bisou.
Merci a demain!
Je vous aime trop trop <333
If Momoa shaved his head, it's very suss. One would almost think he'd been told already that he wasn't coming back, or perhaps that the show wasn't coming back...

I'd prefer to see Atlantis focus what time they have on things unique to the show . So unless it is just background decorations, I'd rather not have Christmas or any other holiday.
OTOH April Fool's Day might be fun.

Stirring much?
Actually, I think MW said it very well regarding lines/actors/thought processes in the MGM vid. Smart man that Martin! ;)
MWVID.
We've got our 'health at work day' next week, with reflexology, indian head massage, sports massage and other eastern meditation techniques. Have you ever tried a traditional Thai massage. I'm being persuaded to have one, but I think I might dislocate something. LOL.
Hi, Joe!

Happy belated birthday, Joe!!!! I was going to send a chocolate cake (in the traditional Jack O'Neill monster cake sense), but I missed the date. Oh, well. My next blog will be dedicated to you as a consolation prize.
Happy Birthday! I like the colour of your cake :)
I just want to go a little off-topic here about something.
Earlier today the studio posted its syndication-raitngs for SG1 and Atlantis; which showed a staggering fall for them and other shows on networks. The reason for the drop was cited to be the result of DVRs used by a large proportion of viewers... however, unless I'm mistaken, I remember BSkyB originally encrypted their movies on Box Office to prevent people from recording them.
If and when you launch the third Stargate series, there is no reason you couldn't perform a similar thing with DVR-hardware. Alternatively, given the success of your associates with Sanctuary, why not release each episode on SD/HD over the internet with a fee?
Joe, I wanted to know if we would ever see an all around race like earth as far as media, good infantry, a good navy, etc. I guess what I'm asking is this. will we will see a real Earth-like race that is advanced? Because its really bugged me that there are no other races that really have a developed civilization. either they are all civilian, all scientific, or all military. I just want to see a race that is as culturally, economically, and professionally as diverse as Earth.
thanks.
