October 21, 2007

Well, having Robert Cooper swing by to do a guest Q&A was evidently as much a treat for you as it was for me - for you because it was a nice change of pace from my usual yammering, and for me because it gave me a much-needed break from my usual yammering. And so a big thanks to Rob for taking time out of his busy weekend to come hang out. Rob, should you ever feel in an answery mood, we’d love to have you back.

While you were all basking in Cooperly goodness last night, I was back at Fuel with Fondy for the last night of Whole Hog Dinner 2007. Tom showed us to our table and informed me that while Fondy would be doing the menu I’d enjoyed on my previous visit with Marty G. and Kurt, I would be doing something a little different. Since I had already enjoyed the original Whole Hog Dinner, Chef Belcham had created an alternate menu just for me!

Feeling all extra special and such, I settled back and waited to be pleasantly surprised. And I was. In a big way. We started things off with the excellent charcuterie plate (home made chorizo sausage, pork rillettes, pork terrine, and pickled ramps), and then followed with the first course: the stuffed pig ear in green sauce with pig tail consomme for her, and an astounding shaved pig ear, beat, and black truffle creation for me. I say astounding but, really, mere words cannot do justice to the sublimity of this dish that delivered on all levels - scent, texture, and taste. Fondy enjoyed her first course, the accompanying green sauce in particular, a wonderful composition of collard greens, parsley, tarragon, chives, and red wine vinegar. For our second courses, Fondy had the crispy brain with parsley root served on a bed of Dungeness crab mayonnaise, while I was served perhaps the greatest pork belly dish I’ve ever eaten - braised and smoked, the well-marbled piece of meet was firm to my fork but melted in mouth. Fondy grew up eating brain (her mother used to make it in soup), and while she liked the dish, like me she was not a fan of the dish’s metallic undertone (according to Fondy, a little lemon juice neutralizes the stronger flavor). Our third course was an addition to the menu: the carbonara ravioli that I so thoroughly enjoyed on my first visit - and enjoyed just as much on my second. The sweetness of caramelized bacon interior married to an intense black pepper heat makes this one a dish I really hope to see on the regular menu some day. Four our fourth courses, Fondy had the braised crown bacon, which turned out to her favorite dish of the night, while I was surprised with a perfectly-prepared piece of pork shoulder served atop a brain risotto. You heard right. Brain risotto. I was admittedly skeptical but, have to say, this is a dish I would order again without hesitation. No metallic undertone here. Just an understated creaminess accented by the chives. By the time course number five came our way, this one yet another addition, we were close to tapping out. Still, we did manage to sample most of our seared foie gras served on a bacon brioche with coronation grapes. A very rich dish that, at this point in the evening, was a little foreboding. Still, a good piece of foie and a surprisingly nice coronation grape accompaniment, although we both found the broiche too unctuous. For her sixth course, Fondy had the roasted saddle served on a bed of fennel but, unlike the dish I was served on my last visit, sans boudin. Not a big deal as she was so stuffed that she couldn’t have eaten it anyway. But she did try and like the saddle. I helped out by finishing it and my own delectable pork sous-vide with home made coppa ham. Unfortunately, we had to cut out before dessert was served but, rather than allow us to go without, Tom had our desserts packed so that we could enjoy them later that night. Fondy LOVED her Birch syrup pie with candied bacon, while (no surprise here) I LOVED my super dark chocolate terrine.

Another exceptional meal at Fuel and a big thank you to Tom, Chef Belcham, and the rest of the gang for making my dinner extra special. Brain risotto! Who’d have thunk?!

Today’s pics: Whole Hog Dinner 2007 - Round Two

Today’s video: None.

Today’s mailbag: the half-dozen or so questions that weren’t addressed to Robert Cooper…

Irulan writes: “You said something last month about no romance outside of McKay/Brown. Care to take that back?”

Answer: Nope.

Elizabeth writes: “ 1) Have you ever eaten kishka? If you have, did you like it? 2) Who is your favorite Star Wars character?”

Answers: 1) I have. 2) I did. 3) Han Solo.

Teyilia writes: “I take it you don't want me to write the story then?”

Answer: By all means, write away, but I can’t offer creative input.

Kurt writes: “ Is it true that "Flightless Dove", "Bridge to Forever" and "Mr. Poopy Pants" are episode titles for the upcoming season?”

Answer: No, but I’ve followed up on the suggestion of a recent dinner companion and will be changing the title of our season finale, The Last Man, to A Very Wraithy Summer.

Ademaro writes: “How lovely, I'm glad you have brought some of the Hungarian culture into your life.”

Answer: I had no choice. Both Martin Gero and Ivon Bartok have Hungarian blood in ’em. In Ivon’s case, it is partially diluted with Jack Daniels.

Anonymous #1 writes: “would you mind answering some questions about Reunion that have been brought up by fans and a t.v. reviewer in North Carolina.
1.Why don't the Atlantis writers move the series along in each episode?
2.Instead of starting at the beginning of the village scene, why don't you start in the middle. You know, cut to the chase?
3. How is the audience supposed to know that several weeks have passed since Lifeline?
4. Even though Ronon made the decision to go with the Satedans, the decisioned was nulled by them being traitors. Your response to this?
5. Why bother with a second jumper when the first jumper is cloaked?
6. Doesn't Carter going off-world make Sheppard redundant?
7. Why is Sheppard so stupid that he releases the replicator?
8. What do you say to people who say this was a mined-out premise?”

Answers: 1. We always try to offer a mix of arc-driven and stand-alone episodes although, in the case of season four, we definitely will be seeing more of the former. As for the complaint that there is nothing in Reunion that “moves the series along” - Carter’s assuming command of the Atlantis expedition, the episode’s B story, is a huge development that has ramifications for the series as a whole. 2. You mean why not cut into the middle of a scene and start from there? More often than not, that’s exactly what I do, but I also like to offer up these smaller moments as it’s the small moments that go a long way toward developing our characters and their relationships with one another. 3. It’s never spelled out but is strongly suggested in Sheppard-Carter scene when Sheppard refers to the I.O.A. stonewalling his attempts to mount a rescue op for Elizabeth. 4. At the end of the day, the audience knows he will not be leaving Atlantis. No surprise there. What’s surprising is that he does make a choice - and it’s not the one we expected. 5. The wraith are expecting a rescue mission so, even if Carter and co. are cloaked going in, their entry to the facility will be no less easy. However, by having the second jumper do the fly by, it not only leads the perimeter defenses away form the facilities, but lulls the interior defenses, allowing our team to take them by surprise. 6. No. Carter’s military and science background will allow her to contribute in many areas, but off-world ops and science & technology still remain Sheppard and McKay’s areas of expertise. 7. He doesn’t. When Carter leads the team in, Zelenka zeroes in on a power conduit that is immediately targeted. Once this is done, the power to the whole facility ebbs (thus the dimming lights and the flickering force shield surrounding the replicator), weakening the force shield and, ultimately, allowing the replicator to escape. 8. One could argue that scifi in general is mined-out. Yet another time travel story. Or another AU story. Or another alien invasion story. The key is finding what makes this particular story special for your characters. Take Window of Opportunity for example. One could argue that it was a mined-out story and yet, it turned out to be a fan favorite. 9. A t.v. reviewer in North Carolina?

Anonymous #2 writes: “The reason the whole Ronon/Keller romance is turning stomachs is because right out of the gate they seem to be shoved together…”

Answer: True. Adrift, Lifeline, Reunion, and Doppelganger have been veritable Ronon/Keller lovefests.

Twolly writes: “ Will the outtake you described (Joe F. taken by surprise), be on the S4 DVD's?”

Answer: Maybe.

Anonymous #3 writes: “What's with the weak writing and shoving Keller into every single situation?”

Answer: Yeah, what’s with shoving the Chief Medical Officer into every situation that deals with a medical emergency? Can’t Zelenka do that?

Crazymom writes: “Who played the clown?”

Answer: The individual playing the clown was none other than………………………………............................................................................................................................................................................................................................................an actor we hired! Surprised?

Aurora writes: “My name is Aurora and I have been reading this blog for a number of months and have loved every minute but I had a sad occurrence today I wanted to share.”

Answer: Hi, Aurora. I’m sure I speak for everyone here in passing along condolences and hoping the best for you and your loved ones during this difficult time.

I think I was unclear; my question last night was meant for you, not for Mr. Cooper.

I'm sure I'm just one of many folks wondering if you were in the know and were willing and/or able to share with us the name given to Rachel Luttrell's new baby boy? With, of course, respect for the wishes of Rachel and her family. Thank you!

Those dishes look better than your last visit to that restaurant. I don't care for lemon to be used in most foods...it overwhelms the dish most of the time and takes away from the enjoyment.

No lemon whatsoever is allowed especially near salmon or chicken in my presence.

What's the most unusual and surprising dish you've ever had?

Thanks for answering my question! Since you like kishka, you should eat at Langer's [it's a jewish delicatessan] the next time you are in LA.

Would you please answer my questions. 1) In Stargate Continuum do they remember what happened over the course of the movie or is it like in Moebius where the episode ends with the team owning a extra ZPM but having no idea what happened? 2) Who is Ronon quarantined with in the episode Quarantine? Thanks!

Is it true that Jack O'Neill and Samantha Carter are married in Stargate Continuum? Thank you.

1)On the subject of the actor playing the clown, why pay for another actor when you could've just given the part to Joe (Flanigan)? He's already playing enough parts in the episode, let alone that scene!

2)But seriosuly, why couldn't you have someone already on set do it? Or did no one want to dress up as a clown? Or maybe they weren't scary enough?

Sounds like Fuel appreciates your food connoisseur skills as much as us readers do! I bet the dinner was all the better knowing you were being treated specially.

I'm wondering, what's been happening in the World of Joe's Psedonymous Email Persona's? Anything of note? They haven't been around for a while...

My god but you’re a brave man.
I couldn’t eat anything that I can identify as far as anatomy goes.
And porcine brain! Haven’t you heard of Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (yes I know bovine) or Kuru? Both Prion diseases.
Well there’s a story for S5, Kuru is contracted from eating the brain of your enemies captured in battle.
Well jabbering over…the rest of the food looked good.
Just going to make a nice bacon sandwich.

Re Reunion: I thought Ronon made his choice when he ran without thinking to Team Sheppard and leaving his Satedans friends at the first sound of gunfire.

I was going to repeat the "why McKay is scared of the whales when he was fond of them in Echoes", but I just remembered, he thought the whale wanted to eat him in Grace Under Pressure, so I guess Sam the Whale was the exception. In the same time, that'll make funny that he'll give the name of Carter to something he fears.

Oh, yeah, I remember what I really wanted to say (I'm just a little tired), really loved Joe's acting when John thought he failed Rodney, the numb walk in the corridor. And the subtle way his face changed from worried to relieved when Sheppard see McKay alive.

Love the smug descend of the stair of Rodney with his "I'm not dead!", but I always love a smug and heroic Rodney, so...

Also, loved the clown. Strangely, it was perfect.

Joe,

I can only admire your patience here answering multiple questions from people for whom the show just does not gell, who have a mental picture of how they want everything to play out and so how a lot of what happens is wrong. Me, I just go with it and enjoy it - thanks for the show.

However, is there any show you have the same reaction to? Where you would like to quiz and query the writers about what they meant by this or that, why they did certain things and how you think they should do it?

Anonymous said...

First? I don't believe it...

Anyway, Joe, my apologies for time-switching "Doppelganger". Played the tape this afternoon (Sunday).

Good ep overall...BUT...

*mock outrage*

You did it again! You failed to have a character perform CPR when appropriate!

One would think Teyla and all Atlantis staff would be required to train in CPR/First Aid and stay current. I thought the same of the SGC's USAF officers, but..."Prometheus Unbound"...enough said!

Which reminds me...my CPR certificate is out of date...

I have enjoyed what we've been shown of season four very much. The writing has been crisp, the plots (yes, even though reused, I hear the talk!) have been made fresh.

The fights in Doppelganger? Awesome...totally awesome. You know I've got it bad when, at age 50 I use such a word! I hope the rest of the season is as fun as the beginning has been!

How do you not weigh 500 pounds?? If I ate like that, I probably would. You must have good genes as well as a good workout routine.

As for SGA, I love this season so much! Actually, I love the whole show, in general. It makes me happy in a very primitive, fangirl-y sort of way. And, as long as Carter doesn't try to usurp Sheppard and Rodney's places in my fangirl-y heart, I will love this show forever.

Well Rob Cooper said in Saturday's blog RCC: You say slight rehash I say evolution. Although, slight rehash is one of my favorite things to eat for breakfast. We often take elements from other episodes and build on them. If it results in a new story and a chance to put different characters in situations unique to them I think that’s worth doing. When we introduced a new Goa’uld on SG-1 people didn’t go ach! Again with this snake in people’s heads thing. (Okay some of you did, but not that many.)

I think it sounds like a poor defense/excuse for unoriginality. This sounds like why you created Replicators in the Pegasus Galaxy too because you wanted to "build" on other SG-1 episodes (I say it isn't build, but due to no fresh ideas.) But has it been established that the Replicators in the Milky Way, who evolved themselves due to Reese, have the same basecode as the Pegasus Galaxy Replicators? Sounds to me like too much of a coincidence in real life but I guess OK in your made up world because it makes it convenient so that McKay can rewrite the basecode in Lifeline because the SGC has been as you said "working on it for a number of years." :(

I sure hope this ridiculous storyline goes away by the middle of this season or the new showrunners will sound like the old showrunners, i.e. little imagination. Just watching how this show has unfolded over 3 seasons has led me to the conclusion that there were a few storylines to be explored over a many season run, but because the overall story wasn't mapped out at the beginning of the show, it became rudderless with a mish-mash of stories that vaguely connected together some of the ideas. Too bad that seems how most of the last 5-6 years of the Stargate franchise have been run. I think you guys have been incredibily lucky that there has been virtually no quality competition in the space science fiction TV genre lately to show how mediorce and dumb-down this show has become.

I don't mean this as insulting, but I am constantly surprised that people ask you questions that seem so obvious to me in interpreting the episodes.

Does it surprise you how many different ways there are to follow a storyline? Do you try to break down scripts accordingly?

Finally got around to watching them all in the past week or so as I have had the house to myself. I just love the audio commentaries. Hi, Joe,

I just want to thank you for your blog. It's the only one that I eagerly read each day, and never miss a day.

I also want to add that, though I have been watching Atlantis since the beginning, I have only really become a fan since season 3 (big SG-1 fan, though), when I've really begun to appreciate the characters more. Now, I'm thrilled, not only at the growth of the characters, but also at your bringing Carter over. She was one of my favorite characters on SG-1 (Jack being the other, and, yes, I'm a shipper, sad to say), and I think she has been bringing more common sense to Atlantis from what I've seen so far. She's a good fit, and Amanda's wonderful playing the SG-1 Sam or the Atlantis Sam.

And, lastly, thanks for your humor and your sharing. My husband and I never miss an episode (though the DVR has definitely come into play both in allowing me to watch multiple times AND in making sure we catch the entire episode, as start and stop times have been screwy on SCIFI). I love your comments, and am even a fan of Baron Destructo :)

BTW, I study martial arts, and Bam-Bam's fight scenes have been WONDERFUL!

Anonymous #3 writes: “What's with the weak writing and shoving Keller into every single situation?”

Joe, one quick question. Just what does Keller bring to SGA that Beckett could not? I guess the same would go for Carter. She seems to be saying the same lines Weir spoke for 3 years so why bother changing characters?

Neither of these ladies has brought anything "new" or "original" to this show, so why toss out two well-liked characters to bring them in?

All I now see is a show that no longer feels like SGA, but it isn't SG1 either, its like a completely different show, and that isn't a good thing.

O.K. Joe I have to ask:
Why did you choose the picture of Daniel in a tux to put in Sam's office instead of any of the other pictures that you have from the past 10 years? Yes I know that Michael/Daniel is *drop dead gorgeous* in a tux, but he's also gorgeous in a suit, his uniform, jeans, robes, and lets not forget naked under a flag. So, since I assume that your reason for picking this particular picture over any of the hundreds of others that you guys have isn't because YOU think that Daniel is gorgeous in a tux (after all YOU don't look at Michael the way that some of us do *ahem*) then there must be another reason. So is it..............

A. Since Atlantis takes place after Continuum, the picture of Daniel in a tux is to show that Sam and Jack are married and Daniel was best man.

B. Sam snapped a picture of Daniel at HIS wedding to Vala.

C. Sam/Jack and Daniel/Vala had a double wedding.

D. This is actually a picture of Daniel from HIS wedding to Sam.

E. Sam put this picture of Daniel in her office and a picture of Jack in her quarters to confuse everybody since the military would probably be upset if they found out that Jack and Daniel finally tied the knot - to each other.

F. You enjoy teasing the fans and probably couldn't answer anyway because fandom would implode.

Inquiring minds need to know Joe. Since I'm sure it's not because you just happen to love that particular picture of Daniel, is it A, B, C, D, E, or F?

No matter how good an actor he was?

This is not an attack on jewel Staite, casting her as a junior doctor or a junior scientist or junior archaeologist may have worked but this is frankly ridiculous. And to the argument people should just give it a chance, fair enough, but here's the problem, people don't want to.

Inquiring minds need to know Joe. Since I'm sure it's not because you just happen to love that particular picture of Daniel, is it A, B, C, or D?

Please answer this!

"Joe, one quick question.

All I now see is a show that no longer feels like SGA, but it isn't SG1 either, its like a completely different show, and that isn't a good thing."

HOW MANY times to people have to be told that Weir and Carson were NOT
gotten rid of FOR Carter and Keller. The decision to bring Carter and Keller was made AFTER the decision to rid Weir and Carson... why is this hard to get?? Wow!

If we want to send something to one of the main actors, would it still get to them if we send it to the studios? (even though they are on hiatus?) If so, what is the studio address? (sorry, I know this was asked a while ago...but since time has passed I wondered if they would still be able to recieve things)

Joe I was wondering...

Say you already knew that the show had been renwewed, would you not be allowed to inform the fans until an official press release was made?

Has there ever been a thought to do a show on the Ancients. I know that it doesn't fit the here and now but I think that it could be quite a good show. Feel in some gaps...with the other races and such. Stargate Ancients could be the name. I claim no rights...although I know nothing will come of it anyways.

Joe,

Who knows that you and Rob Cooper have birthdays two days apart?

Kudos to Rob on a brilliantly written and directed episode. I still get chills from the fight scene. And the look of utter surprise on Evil Shep's face when Rodney reappeared after his death-defying whale experience was classic. Also, the references to 'Cold Lazarus' and 'The Gamekeeper' with Carter mentioning both were nice touches to a delightfully creepy episode.

Joe,

Season 4 has been great so far. I'm not sure about the new Dr , but I am preferring Carter over Weir.

*Waves to Kate*

You may of, kind of, sort of, accidentally on purpose forgot to copy MY other 2 choices to Joe. How can Joe possibly answer without those last 2 choices of E & F?

Actually the more I think about it I probably should have mentioned............

G. Joe WON'T answer because he loves us all too much and realizes that if he can't make everyone happy then it's better not to say anything at all.

I think its a fair question. TPTB got rid of Carson and Weir for what reason? And why did they feel Carter and Keller (or any other characters) would be an improvement?

Frankly, I don't see any "improvement". All I see is different people pretty much doing the same things.

quote RCC - (1)Joe Flannigan didn’t want to take his shirt off.

(2)Something about causing too much squee? .... Unquote

1. I dont blame him!! Having spent 2 days at Armegeddon in Auckland and seeing for myself the lengths some people will go to get an autograph/photograph, and - with one woman in particular - more than one autograph/photograph .... *raises eyebrows, and shakes head here* I really feel sorry for the poor man.

2. can someone puhlese tell me what squee is???

Hi,

Just curious: for you, what are the best and worst aspects of working in the Sci-fi industry?

If the chance arose, are there any shows on TV now (not SGA, and assuming no other obligations) that you'd like to join the writing staff on?

Thanks!

i think youd agree that Sheppard is the off world guy, the military guy with the added muscle (Ronon) and that Carter is the leader, but also someone capable of going offworld if she is needed too, not neccessarly required too.

It's like having a Big brother watching your back, that is sorta like what Carter is in my opinion, she looks out for everyone, yet at the same time is just there to help should the situation warrant it

besides, Sheppard can't be redundant after being the man for 80 episodes

that would be like say Killing off O'Neil and making Landry his replacement :)

Sherwood_Forest_Maiden, squee is the ridiculously high pitched excited noise that fangirls (and sometimes fanboys) emit when their favorite actors/characters do something that they particularly like (ie, Joe Flanigan - or in my opinion David Hewlett - taking his shirt off).

Wow. How did you become such a food connoisseur?

There is a huge difference between a food connoisseur and a glutton.
