October 23, 2007

I was at the stove, carefully stirring the pot’s contents into a thick, creamy consistency when Fondy walked in and asked: “You’re not eating oatmeal today because you think it’ll effect the results of your cholesterol test, are you?” “No,”I lied. In fact, the oatmeal was just part of my three-pronged plan: oatmeal, green tea, and dark chocolate. That triple whammy would, I assumed, be enough to help lower those LDL levels. I worked out. Ate. Showered. And then, anxiety mounting, hopped into my car and drove to the doctor’s office for a long overdue physical. By the time I arrived, I could already predict my blood pressure would be through the roof. I could actually hear my heart beating in my ears. After the assistant took my height and weight, I gauged her for any sort of tip. She was expressionless. “5’10, 160 lbs.,”I noted. “In your medical opinion, is that normal?” She shrugged and explained that she usually runs the numbers through her computer to come up with a BMI, but her computer was down today. Then, she ushered me into the doctor’s office where I sat. And waited. And read. And waited some more. Twenty minutes later, the doctor came in and asked me some general questions. Smoke? No. Drink? Rarely. Exercise? Every day. I had to add that my dinner habits tended to the “richer” end of the scale. She took note. And took note of my family history. Then, she checked my hearts. Checked my lungs. Checked my ears, nose, and throat. Checked my blood pressure. All good! Then proceeded to poke and prod. Despite the fact that I’m ticklish, I suppressed the urge to giggle. When it was finally over, she made a note on my lab requisition form I couldn‘t help but notice. Hmmm. “It’s probably nothing to worry about,”she tried to reassure me, “but we’ll know more when we get the blood test back in a few days.” Another hmmmm. Since I have to fast 10 hours before hitting the lab, that means I can get my test tomorrow morning at the earliest - which means I’ll get the results on Friday at the earliest. Damnit! I knew this was a bad idea!

I spent the next half hour madly googling non-existent symptoms and attempting to decipher the shorthand the doctor had scrawled under the “Additional Testing Instructions” portion of the requisition form. I suppose I should be thankful for small comforts. At least there were no checked boxes under the “Genital Specimens” sub-category.

Oh, I thought this was interesting. David Chase finally spoke out about that Sopranos non-ending, finally quashing all those elaborately detailed theories that sought to prove Tony did, in fact, get whacked in the episode’s final seconds. “Lookit all the clues!“they shouted. “The tune that comes on the radio is funeral music!“ “The Soprano meal at Holstein’s is meant to parallel the Last Supper!“ “Meadow’s inability to park represents humanity’s inability to master their fate which must inevitably end in death and not enough change for the parking meter!” Yeah, nice try. In the words of series creator Chase (who, incidentally, wrote and directed the finale so, I suppose he should know):

"There are no esoteric clues in there. No `Da Vinci Code,'" he declares. He says it's "just great" if fans tried to find a deeper meaning, but "most of them, most of us, should have done this kind of thing in high school English class and didn't." (Sopranos' creator defends famous finale By Frazier Moore).

Well, there you go. The interview appears in The Sopranos: The Complete Book which comes out this week.

This blog is dedicated to all of our friends in Southern California who have been displaced by the fires.

Today’s pics: The dogs conked-out after a day at daycare, Tojo’s sushi, Hiro and Dragon, breakfast!

Today’s video: None today. Sorry.

Today’s mailbag:

Charles Schneider writes: “How do you feel about eating fish? Any favorite in particular?”

Answer: I’m all for it. I’m a big fan of skate, sea bass, monkfish, and crispy trout.

Dustin writes: “are you not allowed taking them to work or is it just ezyer if you have to work in the office for a day doing book work writing ext to not have to look after them?”

Answer: Oh, I can take them to work but that would mean I would have to keep an eye on them all day long to make sure they stay out of trouble (chewing things, having “accidents”, making long-distance telephone calls, etc.)

Alipeeps writes: “I guess I like my high fantasy a little less wordy and with a bit more pace. Ironic, perhaps, given that, as a writer, I am terribly wordy!”

Answer: So what would you recommend among the high fantasy titles out there?

Cathain writes: “This has been bothering me, is there a reason why MGM spells Ronon's name as Ronan?”

Answer: Yes. It’s because they are spelling it incorrectly. I prefer Row-none myself.

Jill E. writes: “Was Lulu ok with all those big dogs?”

Answer: Yep. Although she prefers the company of small dogs, her best friend at daycare is a four month old Great Dane puppy.

Anonymous #1 writes: “Tabula Rasa: More humorous, or more serious and angsty?”

Answer: More serious. And perspirey.

Inpa writes: “1. If sci fi do choose to not renew the show, or to renew it how will that decision be made public? Will you mention it on here first or will Sci fi release a statement of some kind?
2. Do you ever consider getting famous actors (as in not just within the genre) more often to see if interest in the show or episode would be boosted?
3. And do you sometimes scroll around different stargate fan sites in order to get a wider perspective of the reception to the episodes or just stick to the one or two?”

Answers: 1. I’d wait for the official SciFi release. 2. We’re always considering atypical scifi guest stars. 3. Since I started this daily blog, I don’t have as much time to check out the different fan sites.

Ditraveler writes: “Glad you liked it! hope Fondy liked it too.”

Answer: As predicted, she loves it. Thanks again.

Arctic Goddess writes: “Would you consider living in the United States if an American series offered you a writing position?”

Answer: Of course.

Tesajb writes: “Speaking of, have you checked your Cookie Monster email lately?”

Answer: I did. He wrote you back but had the email bounce back.

PG15 writes: “The amount of time I've spent with that flocking by my side […] it has not damaged me one bit with its fatal poisonousness or in anyway attempted to kill me…”

Answer: When you least expect it…

Rebecca writes: “So, on to The Legacy of Heorot. It's interesting you mentioned Alien, because my first thought on reading the book was Alien meets Robinson Crusoe. I wonder how much of the book was influenced by that movie, at least as far as the monster goes.”

Answer: I don’t know but that’s a very interesting question. I believe the book came out a year after Aliens was released.

Anonymous #2 writes: “Have you ever tried hot chocolate?”

Answer: I do enjoy chili chocolate.

Cat4444 writes: “I also thought it was interesting that Sheppard would be getting himself pounded into the pavement by the entity, despite it being "him", but I figure it was more the "guilt" than anything and it took McKay's appearance to show him that he's not the one to blame for what happened -- “

Answer: That’s a great interpretation of the scene.

Anonymous #3 writes: “I was just curious if you'd read The Doomsday Book by Connie Willis?”

Answer: I haven’t although it is on my to-read list. I read To Say Nothing of the Dog an I understand that many of the same characters appear in Doomsday which is a decidedly bleaker book.

ZoniDuck writes: “I'm curious Joe, does SGA require a lot of ADR work, or would you say it's pretty average by industry standards?”

Answer: Many shows do significantly more ADR than we do.

Beckett Fan writes: “She 'acts' too young and insecure to have such a high position, IMHO.”

Answer: Keller’s insecurities stem not so much from the position but from the fact that she is the CMO of an off-world expedition.

Stivaria writes: “Who builds the ZedPM and Ancient Personal Shield type props, a group within the studio or an outside contractor…”

Answer: They were built in-house.

Rich S. writes: “Anyways, sorry you didnt enjoy, not every book is for everyone!”

Answer: True enough. I’m pleased you enjoyed it though.

Anonymous #4 writes: “I think the only modern writer of fantasy who does manage to maintain my interest is Clive Barker. His horror is a little too hard core for me but his dark fantasy is often brilliant.”

Answer: I do like his stuff. I remember reading Weaveworld and The Books of Blood ages ago.

Iamza writes: “So, the miraculous lifting of his symptoms, the regeneration of his nerves, the return of his sexual potency, these are things that make Thomas angry because they're indicators that he is losing his battle for sanity.”

Answer: That does explain why he lashes out at the his allies over the course of the adventure but, like you said, I don’t think it excuses his actions - or makes him any more sympathetic.

Archana S. writes: “1) How do you feel about Indian cuisine? 2) How many languages do you speak?”

Answers: 1) Love it. 2) 3 and some.

Firefly827347 writes: “I also wanted to ask if you'd like to stop by your thread on Gateworld once in a while?”

Answer: Awww, you shouldn’t have. I’m blushing.

S.B. writes: “ What do you think about Dumbeldore being gay?”

Answer: Meh.

Wolfen writes: “Hmm, I'm trying to think of fantasy books that stay far enough away from the usual formulae that you might enjoy them…”

Answer: Thanks for all of the recommendations. As for Jim Butcher - I’m not familiar with his work but word from the people who worked with him on Dresen is that he’s a very nice guy.

SciFi Slacker writes: “are we going to be seeing much of major lorne this season?”

Answer: Yep.

Irmo writes: “Do you always take a camera with you when you go out to eat?”

Answer: Yep.

Anonymous #5 writes: “And just because I can't resist please name me five 'child (or young person) genius's that have actually been successful and popular is Sci-fi?”

Answer: Why would whether or not another scifi show has done it before be a good argument for doing it or not doing it on our show?

BoomerGoodHeart writes: “Canneloni is a tube of pasta stuffed with a meat mixture, Manicotti is a tube of pasta stuffed with a cheese mixture.”

Answer: Hmmm. Whenever my mother made cannelloni, it was always a thin, crepe-like covering as opposed to a firmer tubular pasta shell.

Atlantisfannew1 a ecrit: “Je vais vous écrire une autre lettre ce week end. Il serais possible que vous me répondiez et que vous me donnez votre autographe?”

Reponse: Bien sur.

Anonymous #6 writes: “Out of curiosity, now that the show is done with production, will you be taking any time off from the blog? Like a day of rest?”

Answer: No plans to.

WingedPegasus writes: “By the way, is there any chance I could have today's blog dedicated to me? It's my birthday.”

Answer: I advance-dedicate tomorrow’s blog to you.

Hi Joe!

Enjoyed the puppy and sushi pics!

Doesn't sound like your doctor's appt went totally as you hoped. :( Still, 5'10" and 160# - not bad! (I say with much personal knowledge.)

One part of your account of the Doctor visit did bring up one question: "Then, she checked my hearts." Are you a Time Lord?

SGA has finally worn me down. I bought a season pass for S4 on iTunes. Damn your quality! I'll just have to suffer with a smile on my face. See? --> :)

I read somewhere (can't remember where) that most writers find male characters easier to write (even female writers). Any thought on this?

Amz said...

I'm sure your medical results will come back fine Joe.

I did notice that you said the doctor checked your "hearts"...um, is there something you're not telling us? Is it possible you're so good at sci-fi stories because you have a "unique" perspective??

(I do realise I'm probably making nothing of nothing here, but hey, it's worth asking).

Charles Schneider said...

Wow, thanks for taking the time to answer everybody's questions. I think it's hilarious that Lulu's best friend at "school" is going to be enormous soon. When I was a little kid we had a little cat that thought it was one of the dogs. It would pant, sleep with the dogs (2 labs), eat with the dogs, etc. It was hilarious.

Good luck with the blood tests. I predict that you'll be within acceptable parameters for your demographic. The MD will probably give you random advice anyway, like be sure to eat healthy, etc.

What selections are you debating for our next book club session?

I watched the Atlantis InFANity special the other day. Apart from loving the behind the scenes stuff, I was delighted to see the super cool super bug in all its glory. I must admit to being slightly worried that it would be a little cheesy in broad daylight. Silly me. Please tell me we will be see lots more of them this season.

Hey Joe

1 thanks much for giving me the OK to write, just wanted to be sure since you yourself have a cameo in it :)

2 at the mention of the ZedPM's being made in house, I was wondering, have you been to a gas station and gotton a powerade? I'm sure i'm not the only one my dad was the first to mention it at the Local Marathon station, he said that the "bottle looks like one of those orange power thingies" and I'm like, he's right they do. simply put you drink the powerade(of any flavor) and then put the top back on and set it on the top and color it orange/yellow and BOOM ZedPM, is that just me & dad seeing that?

Also How's cookie Monstor doing?

~Teyilia

PS: at the mention of "chili chocolate" does that mean you put snow in the stuff to cool it off?

What episode is everyone going to find out about Teyla's pregnancy? Is Micheal in S4? is Rachel Luttrell in the season finale?

Hah! Oatmeal is the cure-all for cholesterol, isn't it? Ironically, I had my physical just yesterday. I hate pre-physical anxiety =(.

All that aside, I am compelled to share the amazing steak experience I had last night.

Since I worked so hard this weekend I decided to treat myself to dinner at a local restaurant called Insalata's. I ran into my good friend Rob when I first walked in the door and he recommended the steak and halibut.

Funny thing about this restaurant. I had eaten there with some co-workers about 8 or 9 years ago but I didn't remember it being so fru-fru. Now it has one of those menus with only 6 different dinner choices.

But back to the steak. Words cannot do justice to describe it's heavenly just-perfect tender juiciness, flavored in delicious red wine sauce, decorated with wild mushrooms, garlic, and fingerling potatoes.

And of course this was the one night I left my camera at home. In a last ditch effort to preserve the perfect moment forever, I scrambled for my cell phone, only to find the battery had died. ARGH!

e-mail bounce back? Blasphemy! I guess I'll try shoot over another email. =P

Why is it that doctors always scribble all those notes down without telling you, the patient, what is going on. It's like they are intentionally trying to raise your blood pressure!

Hope all is well with your results. I'll be sending you positive thoughts :)

Glad to hear that Lulu had fun at daycare. I love that her best friend is a great dane.

Oooh, is that like a week in Mallozzi food time?

I just got back from a con in New Zealand, and it was a pleasant surprise to meet so many fellow fans of your blog. You're a hit down under!

I do hope you'll let us know if you hear from Joe F. I've been watching the news footage and it's scary down there is So Cal.

One question I have to ask. Why do writers like to include the following words when they are talking about sedating someone: "Well I gave her enough to bring down two men", or "I gave him enough to bring down an elephant". Why would any doctor give a patient double or triple the quantity of sedative to begin with? It just cracks me up when I hear it. I guess this doesn't actually need a response. I am just being facetious.

Mags said...

Hi Joe. First of all, I hope all goes well with your blood tests. I'm sure there's nothing to worry about, doctors love being cryptic. Anyways, I don't normally do this (normally I've managed to keep this matter somewhat personal), but at this point I don't know what else to do and I know that hundreds (thousands?) of people read this blog.

My mom's been battling with ovarian cancer for close to four years now, and her latest bout of chemo has been pretty terrible and seemingly never ending, only made worse by her negative catscan results. She's made the decision to discontinue her chemo if her catscan results don't show any sign of improving next month. Obviously I'm terrified, but mostly I'm seeking out as many people as I can to just send positive thoughts our way. I figured something with as many readers as your blog would be a good outlet. I'm a firm believer of positive energy, and at this point I'm worried my family's (while strong) is so anxious that our normal positive vibes just aren't enough. If you could give a (small) shout out on our behalf it would mean the world to me.

Thank you so much. -Maggie

Thanks for the blog, I really enjoy the comments, but my dinners look really sad compared to your fare.

Sorry you didn't like the Covenant book, I think when I read it (long time ago) it was so different it was quite captivating. I can recommend Robin Hobb's Assassins Apprentice as a well written not your typical fantasy story. Quite good world building.

Really enjoying the seasons so far! thanks!

Answer: Thanks for all of the recommendations. As for Jim Butcher - I’m not familiar with his work but word from the people who worked with him on Dresen is that he’s a very nice guy.

Oh, he is, definitely! I've met him, I've interviewed him -- I didn't mean to imply he wasn't! I'm just still irked by that statement he made a while back, I'm afraid (the one where he claimed that it was a "popular misconception" that the SG-1 production crew still wanted to do the show ...). Being in journalism, misinformation drives me *nuts*. But nobody's perfect, least of all moi! ;) Kudos to you for being so forgiving!

Hearts, 'ey? You're a Time Lord! (You'd probably be more like the Master than the Doctor, 'ey? *G*) Speaking of hearts and doctors, they had a hell of a time dealing with my heart when I was in the hospital -- high pulse rate, but low blod pressure (and yet my cholesterol is only the high end of "normal"). I never would have guessed such a thing were even possible ... So they put me on lowpressor to bring the rate down, and then my pressure started dropping too low to stay on it! :(

Anyway, hope everything goes okay with your test results! :(

If you talk Japanese to him, he will love you and give you free stuff...at least that's how it worked for us. ;-) Do you do the Omikase when you go? I don't eat seafood/fish so I didn't do it, but my friend Megan did and almost died&went to heaven after each course. When we were done they let us go behind the sushi bar and have our picture taken with Tojo himself; he's such an adorable little man.

1) Is it too early to ask for next month's BOTM selection? :-)

2) Good luck with the bloodtest results. Hopefully, your doctor is right, and it is nothing to worry about.

3) I wonder if Thomas's overall despicability of character was designed to make him unsympathetic so that readers would come to realize that his outer affliction is irrelevant? The only ugliness/disease about Thomas in the Land is his own behaviour. Same could be said for the real world -- we're so focused on outer appearances that we tend to overlook that there is a person inside each body we dismiss.

More than one heart, now that's cool. Thanks for Atlantis, Reunion aired here in the UK yesterday and it was awesome, even my mum admitted the Wraith base looked cool and realistic, but my tv went a bit mental when Teyla was fighting at the very beginning and everything seemed to go slow-mo. It was quite weird, but nonetheless enjoyable. Have a good day/night/evening etc.

Anonymous said...

Then, she checked my hearts.

Gasp! Can this be? A mere slip of the.. ermm, typing finger.. reveals the truth?! Hearts plural?! So... where do you keep your TARDIS?

Answer: So what would you recommend among the high fantasy titles out there?

As has previously been recommended in comments on here, David Eddings' 5 book series The Belgariad (first book is Pawn of Prophecy) and the "sequel" 5 book series The Mallorean are very enjoyable, accessible high fantasy. From a writing perspective, it's also very interesting to read his book The Rivan Codex which is essentially a compilation of his extensive research for the two series, covering how he developed the various races etc and their characteristics and the various mythologies and historical references he draws from etc. His books are classic high fantasy (as in - a hero, unaware of his heritage, who finds himself on a quest to save the land from being overwhelmed by a dark power etc etc). The twist is, his writing is not too wordy, he moves the plot along at a good pace and he creates a cast of diverse, interesting and entertaining characters.

Also good for accessible high fantasy is Mercedes Lackey, particularly her books set in and around the country of Valdemar. My personal favourite is the Last Herald Mage triology.

My thoughts are with you and your mom Maggie. My sister has been fighting this disease for about the same amount of time and is currently on her sixth round of chemo. She's 35 right now and her goal is to try and make it to 40. Luckily, she is stubborn as heck and is determinedly positive - I agree with you that a positive outlook/mindset is so important and can work wonders. I know what it's like to see someone you love battle this disease and I will be sending all the positive thoughts I can your mom's way. *hugs*

Joe. You have several medical types who frequent this blog. You should have taken copious notes so we could explain what she's testing for.

However, given your lack of any symptoms (expressed here, at least), I bet she's just doing a standard battery of tests to check for regular stuff like high cholesterol, liver function, diabetes, etc.

Hey Joe. Been a fan since season 1 of SG1 all the way through now, and your blog. To be honest, it was watching Stargate that made me want to go into filmmaking. It's slow-goings, but we'll see.

I will always support the Stargate franchise and the wonderful people who make it happen - no matter what happens like cast changes or all that. I'm a believer in show in general first and it has great writing.

I get so worked up when places like Entertainment Weekly or the awards in Hollywood in general ignore you. Well, they nominate but go for other stuff they 'like'. You see how much Emmys Smallville won, and they don't really do visual effects like Stargate. It shouldn't really bother me that much, but then I just want people to know how great and stable this 'little' franchise.

I think Joel Goldmsith should have won that Emmy. It's like me still hung up on Johnny Depp not winning that Oscar for Pirates. It was so... new. I don't think anyone does main title music like that for TV anymore - from what I have seen. It's either some song from a band or stuff like Lost. I haven't seen all the shows on SCI FI though. Only Eureka and BSG, and people shouldn't compare them (even Firefly and Farscape) to your shows.

Remember those comments from the guy behind Dresden Files?

So far, I've been enjoying the new season of Atlantis and I can't wait for more episodes. I love all the characters but I'm a huge fan of Sheppard. I was hooked because of what had happened to his character prior to Rising, and the possibilties. So far, he's having a great Season 4. Please pass on a 'well done and keep it up' to everyone, cast, crew, and let's not forget the caterers.

I have to tell you that there was a point when I had swayed a little - blame some parts of the Internet 'corrupting' me - but I never STOPPED watching.

I recently read on Comingsoon.net that Atlantis has been renewed. Congratulations!

Link - http://www.comingsoon.net/news/tvnews.php?id=38658.

But you probably know that by now. :) This will take you guys to 100 eps. I read your earlier thoughts on it, but my mind is going through all the scenarios.

Anyway, after this very long comment and what some may call 'ass-kissing' (I don't see it, just passing on my appreciation, and I'm recalling Mr. Gero commentary on McKay and Mrs. Miller where he had made fun of himself 'patting himself on the back'), thanks be to you and everyone else for this franchise. I hope it's still here in the next 10 years. I miss Jonas, and Ford, but I understand how it works. ;)

PS: As a fan, hearing about my favourite character in any media - Batman and I love the viral marketing for The Dark Knight - on my favourite show just brings out the fanboy in me. :D How did all that happen?

From a Gater.

So, I've just heard the news that Atlantis has been picked up for another season ... I'm so glad. Seriously, it really is the only show I watch. I'm sure there are other good shows out there, but damned if I can be bothered wading through the rest of the crap (and the commercials) to find it.

As a genre, it is afforded little respect from the general public. - you are so correct in this. I don't know how many times I've rolled my eyes and agreed when someone finds out I like science fiction and does the whole, "Oh, Riley: you're such a geek." I've actually decided to draw a line - I'm not going to take the gentle put-downs any more. For god's sake - the people who are mocking me are also avid watchers of reality tv! (Also, they actually believe there is true reality in reality tv... until I explain the concept of editing, and the lack of accountability with regard to viewer "voting".) I'm not going to take it any more. When someone can satisfactorily explain to me why a show set in a hospital is considered perfectly acceptable viewing while a show set on a space station (or the like) is not to be taken seriously, then I'll give in.

By the way, I'm on holiday at the moment, and kicked back on the couch to watch some Season 3 DVDs today ... Sunday in particular. "Dr Mallozzi's Anime DVD collection ..." Heh - I didn't pick that up the first time I saw it. Made me laugh today, though.

Best wishes with your test results, hope everything goes well.

http://www.nytimes.com/2007/10/24/business/media/24adco.html?_r=1&oref=slogin

I find this interesting, because it opens up a lot of possibilities. Part of the reason I skip commercials with my DVR isn't necessarily because I'm not interested in seeing new products, but because there are so many commercials, I get bored waiting for my show to come back on. If they expand this service and see that commercial time is only effective for the first three or four ads, maybe the commercial time will get shorter, or the ads themselves will get less annoying and more useful.

First I would like to congratulate you and all the team of Stargate Atlantis for the fifth season announced in several websites and for the work made for the fourth season, it's really fantastic ! ;-)

Well, I have little questions about the future season. Like I'm French I would like to know if we will see a French or an European ship in the fifth season. The Great Britain and the France know that the Stargate Program exists so, why not ? More over, will we see any French scientists in this season ? Just a little patch on a uniform will satisfy ourselves ;-D

An other thing, I've the same dog than yours, in black. They are so funny !!!

Being as you film in Canada, I assume most of your actors/extras are Canadian. On the show, however, there are more Americans in Atlantis than other country's citizens. Is there any playful (or not so playful) fighting over who gets to wear which country's patch?

Do you happen to know how many countries are represented on Atlantis (as in, how many actual different country patches do you have on set)?

And congrats on season 5! I haven't seen the news anywhere but here, but I'll assume so many people can't be wrong. ;)

I just saw on SCIFI.com that Atlantis got renewed for a fifth season! YAHOO! I just shouted for joy at my desk. Co-workers just looked at me and figured I'd gone over the cliff for the day.

Question, could the impending WGA strike affect y'all or no since you are produced in Canada?

Do you know if the fires are affecting any of the California based Atlantis gang? I've got fingers & toes crossed for friends and friends' family in San Diego and Orange County areas.

Then, she checked my hearts. Your an evil timelord aren't you?

-you said that Cameron might come in some episodes of Atlantis if the show was renewed, apparently, it's the case (according to Variety), and I would like to know if you had an idea about the number of episodes he might appear (I love Ben Browder).
-any idea for the release date in France of "ark of truth" and "continuum"?
-any daniel/vala kiss in "ark of truth"?
-will we see other ancients like Chaya, Oma or Orlin in the season 5?
-Ben Browder would have been the perfect Kirk for Star Trek 11, to my mind. What do you think about it?

Bonjour M. Mallozzi,

According to the ever-lovely Chuck Campbell at the Pegasus 2 con last Feb, it's a common entertainment amongst the extras etc to swap each other's uniform patches and see how long it takes the victim to notice... :)

Stargate Atlantis Keeps Flying for a Fifth Season
Sci Fi Channel has greenlit a fifth, 20-episode season of Stargate Atlantis, it was announced late Tuesday. The series, which has been averaging 1.8 million total viewers this season (versus the cabler's typical audience of 1.3 mil), "truly came out from under the shadow of its sister series [Stargate SG-1] this year and proved that it's a hit in its own right," says Sci Fi exec VP Mark Stern.

Hey Joseph! Just popped in to say "Big congratulations on the 5th season renewal!"

I have no complaints, no questions, no advice, no rants, no requests (well other than one i'll get to in a moment), i just want to say CONGRATULATIONS. I know it must have been a bit nervewracking for you guys for a while, i know it was for me!

You've heard it a lot more lately (which is a good thing!), and it's worth repeating, "I beleive in you guys, and how you are managing Atlantis. You are doing a good job, as is everyone else working on Atlantis. I am proud to be a fan." Except when i called my mother at work a minute ago to share the news... because... Well... Yea i'm a loser and i called my mom, so what!? She's a fan! She was happy too! But i was embarrassed ;).

Anyways, not that i have any doubt you already have, pass our congratulations on to Joe, David, Amanda, Rachel, Jason, Jewel, David N., Kavan, Brad, Rob, Marty, Paul (both of them!), and dear deity just everyone in the cast, and crew! :)

And i hope you're bloodwork comes back ok. I'm sure it will.

Congrats on a 5th season! Please extend my appreciation to your cast and crew for a job well done so far on S4. Take a moment to bask in the glory of renewal....

Now get writing before that writer's strike hits in 7 days! :) Seriously, are you and the rest of the writers part of WGA? Do you anticipate the strike lasting very long?

Are any of your cast and crew affected by the fires in California?

On another note, I am super excited for Travelers on Friday. The clips so far look fabulous!

Emily said...

This has probably been asked before, but I'll ask again anyway since you'll no doubt have no problems ignoring it if it has:

1. Is it hard to write a season finale when you're not sure if it's also going to be the series finale?

2. So, are things "kind of wrapped up, but not really" in the SGA season 4 finale?

I imagine that sort of thing would frustrate me if I were a show writer. But I'm not (much to the fortune of the TV-watching public), so I don't really know.

I just wanted to put in my 2 cents about the Keller character. First, I love Jewel. She's a great actress. However, her character is pretty bad, and it's not because she's so young. I could deal with young if she was well written, but so far she hasn't been. From a medical standpoint, she doesn't seem to know what she's doing. She definitely can't give CPR, and during Adrift, she kept acting like she didn't have a clue what to do next. (I'm guessing, or more accurately hoping, that her incompetence in the nightmare was just because it was a nightmare.) She kept looking around at everybody, pausing, and basically looked like she was way out of her league. My second issue with her is that she went from not existing to being the new "best friend" without anything in between. You say that she's not just being stuck into scenes unless they're medical, but that's not true. Breakfast is not a medical situation, unless the food is a heck of a lot worse than we thought. Her hanging around in the command center and giving Carter pep talks (almost turned the show off at that point) isn't medical in nature. Her standing around and staring at the crystal, while making it impossible for McKay and Radek to move around, was about the most obvious stick-her-in-a-scene-because-we-need-some-eye-candy moment that I've seen in a really long time. I think most people would have preferred to get used to her gradually, and only have her in places where she makes sense. Carson was never stuck in a scene just so everybody could see how cute he was, so doing it to Keller makes no sense. Not to mention it's sexist and disrespectful to Jewel, but I won't go there. I'm hoping that as the season progresses she will be better written, because Jewel, not to mention the fans, definitely deserves a much better character.

Congratulations on the renewal!!! I look forward to seeing what happens next, and I really want to know how you are going to explain Ronon's lack of hair. :)

Joe you weren't the only one having a physical. At least your doc was more tactful. Mine told me I was a heart attack waiting to happen! Wasn't that nice of her? So, if the worst comes to the worst (hopefully long after SGA finishes. ;) ) Any chance I could have one of your hearts? I mean it's not like you don't have one to spare. Thanks in advance! :P

Hello Mr M.,

I usually stay in the dark, choosing to lurk (yeah, it was me!), but I can't refrain myself this time.
Renewed ! Woohoo !
Congratulations for all the gang!

Ok, i'll go back to the shadows, now.

But again...

YOOOOHOOOOO !!

Congratulations on the renewal for season 5. Best news I've had all day!

Congratulations on the season 5 renewal! I knew it would happen. Does this mean that you and the other producers/writers will immediately begin to plot out S5 scripts?

Is there any chance that you'll be able to bring RDA in for a guest appearance or two? I'm sure he doesn't come cheap, but I hope you can find a bit of room in your budget to squeeze him in, given how popular he is.

Oh, and can you guarantee this time that the deleted "not-so-subtle hint" about "that guy in Washington" will be in an S5 episode? Please? :-)

Atlantis got renewed for a fifth season! Yay! ('Pay up, sis').

Please answer my questions. 1) What episode is the funniest in season four? 2) Is O'Neill going to be in season five? (please say yes!)? 3) Do either of the movies have an important story arc for Carter?

Thanks!

Can I say, "told you so"? I knew it would happen. Now you can relax for 5 minutes before you start thinking up new script ideas. Do relax and enjoy the feeling, Joe. You guys have earned it.

First off, huge congratulations on the season five renewal. Time to start gunning for a season six! I'm doing little happy dances here in my cubicle over the news. Yay!

I also have to second mel's opinion that you should give Jim Butcher's Dresden Files books a whirl. Based on past books you've stated you liked/disliked, I think you would really enjoy the series. Good plot, snarky humor, and realistic characters; Butcher does a really good job at bringing the otherworldly to modern-day Chicago and making it believable.

I will admit, though, that the first two books were a little weak. Start with number three: Grave Peril. It's a good one to read right around Halloween. ^_^

Happy vibes and virtual hugs to you, Fondy, and those adorable lazy puppies!

Renewed for season five, yes!

So, will you keep your promise and bring up the Washington Guy?

Also, will any of these characters be in season five [any or all of them would be nice]: Jack, Ford, Weir, Beckett, Carter, or Michael?

Congratulations on being renewed for S5!!!!

Congratulations on the renewal. Any plans for season 5 you can share now that you know it's been renewed?

Since SGA has been renewed (YAY!), are there any plans as of yet for the 100th episode?

Anonymous said...

Congrats on the renewal! Someone over at GateWorld pointed out that the 300th hour of Stargate would occur during season five. Would that be cause for a special episode (a la "Wormhole X-Treme" or "200")?

Anonymous said...

Congratulations on getting Season 5. Now for heaven's sake, do the right thing by the fans who have been loyal to SGA from the beginning and the cast that has been shattered this season. Bring back Weir and Beckett as regulars. They are the heart and soul of SGA, and it will never be as good as it once was without them.

Hey Joe - you're a smart man and I want your opinion. I'm doing a year of volunteer work right now, and the job's great, but my boss is nuts and is squishing my creative personality to pieces. It's a pretty oppressive atmosphere and I dread going to work. Do I stay with it to honor my contract with the volunteer agency, or do I get out of it and try to retain some semblance of sanity?

Felicitations on getting a renewal! You must be relieved... now prepare yourself for an inundation of requests and questions about whether this actor or that actress will be in or not in the show. I have one question: Will cookie monster make an appearance??? If he does not appear in season 5 as a major character I will forsake the stargate franchise!

Vern said...

You have more than one heart? That is extremely rare. The food notwithstanding, keeping in shape is doubly important. I thank you for your dedication of your blog to the situation in Southern California, and will pass it on. In reference to an earlier question, have you talked to Rick and his family lately? It would let us Stargate fans know that he is safe in the light of the dangerous situation.

Awesomely excited about the renewal! But I have to ask, any news on Stargate Universe?

Anonymous said...

Hiya JM, it's been a bloody long time since I've posted. RL drama has been relentless, but you gotta love it. ^_^ In any event, I heard that you guys got renewed for an S5, but since I've been a supporter I figured that would be the case.

Definitely loving this season and it has totally surpassed my expectations which were pretty high and each show is action packed, even though character driven they each maintain a strong team bond which is clearly seen and all the characters are wonderfully balanced. I'm definitely seeing more three-dimensional characterization or the working up to three-dimensional characterization.

Which I must say was one of qualms about the show, but also the reason Ronon was my fave (since I felt he was the best developed). In any event, fantastic season which I find has reawakened SGA and definitely surpassed it's previous seasons.

No question, just wanted to send out my support and congratulations on the success of a new season and the successful confirmation of another season (which I'm sure will be amazing).

Vabby.

Just wanted to stop by and congratulate you, cast and crew on securing Season 5, and also to say congrats on how great Season 4 has been so far.

That said, my wish list for Season 5 (thought I'd get in early)...

1. Would love to see Ford back for a visit and maybe for him to return home - really tie up the storyline
2. It would be wonderful for 100th episode to be an amazing, kick butt Stargate:Atlantis story and not some comedy routine (please, please, please, please, please)
3. I don't mind Keller but I'd prefer Carson Beckett to come back
4. If Amanda agrees to stay on as Sam, please no other SG1 cameos - let SGA draw on its Stargate past but not let its Stargate past draw on it ;)
5. Mentions of said SG1 characters - Jack, Daniel, Teal'c, Cam and Vala by Sam as nods to her personal life/friendships are perfectly fine though if they fit nicely into a storyline
6. More character led stories like Reunion with nice references to events of previous episodes and lots of lovely character moments in amongst the great, please
7. More Teyla and Ronon
8. And lastly (but by no means least), for you guys to have fun making my wishes come true :)

Congrats on the fifth season pick-up!!! Send my congrats onto the rest of the Atlantis crew & cast!!

I read somewhere (can't remember where) that most writers find male characters easier to write (even female writers). Any thought on this?

you probably weren't asking me, but i couldn't resist answering anyway. :) i am in the middle of writing 3 novels, and out of all of them... hmm. i definitely think my female characters are easier to write since i can get inside their head easier, but my guy characters are usually more dynamic. or at least funnier. :)

I've been loyal to SGA from the beginning, and I like the show the way it is now, in season 4, thank you very much. Weir and Beckett aren't the heart and soul of the show for me, and I think it's much better now with the new members of the cast, not that I wouldn't be happy to see Beckett and Weir back in some sort of capacity, in recurring/guest roles in season 5.

I think the cast is finally spot on, and I sincerely hope there won't be any changes in season 5 to the new line up.

Congratulations to all those involved in the show on the renewal. Season 4 has been the best season so far, and I hope season 5 will continue in the same vein. :)

Congratulations and felicitations on a job well done. Not a doubt in my mind that you would all be back for another season. The show just keeps getting better and better.

I am sure you can figuratively stop holding your breath now.

On another note, having to deal with my husband's genetic disposition to high cholesterol...make sure that you schedule your next medical 30 days in advance and have your oatmeal every morning...it really does work. Mind you, if you actually want to maintain a somewhat healthy cholesterol level I urge you just to make it part of your daily routine, that way you can still enjoy all your favorites. It seems to work in our house, as I love to cook, not always cholesterol friendly foods.

Congratulations on the renewal (and what I am sure will be a clean bill of health)! Not only do the caterers and other employees get to pay their rents and mortgages but I get to watch more of my favourite tv show. Everyone's a winner!

But before everyone gets too giddy from the excitement I would like to put forward my list of demands for stories for Season Five before everyone else does:

1. More interpretative dance and mime. You don't have nearly enough. This makes me sad.
2. For every third episode the cast goes shirtless, or depending on the timeslot, pantless.
3. In order to have a more international flavour there is the introduction of a New Zealand technician in the gateroom. For authenticity sake they are always seen in the background passed out surrounded by beer bottles.
4. That there is a lightsaber fight against the Cylons.
5. That there is an edutainment episode where Sheppard contracts Space Herpes from socialising with one alien princess to many. Everyone learns the risk of space VD and a helpline number scrolls at the end of the show.
6. Sam is heard to utter the words, "Jack who?".
7. Sheppard loses both legs and has to pluckily navigate Atlantis on a skateboard leading to Shep Wumpers becoming mysteriously quiet.
8. Vending machines with nuclear weapons are installed in the hallways. Pegasus Galaxy is seen to glow a pretty green colour at night. Two-headed multi-limbed babies becomes the next evil nemesis.
9. Canadian uprising takes place overthrowing Atlantis. Expedition carries on as before but is much more polite. Wacky hijinks with stereotypes continues.
10. I mentioned the bit about the shirtless fight with the Cylons, right?

Hey, I'm not doing this for me, I'm doing this for the good of the show. What can I say, I'm a giver.

Will add my congrats to the long list. Will there be an SGA party out of this news?

My wishes for season 5:

Get rid of Keller. Not the least bit realistic as a doctor.

More Lorne.

Bring Michael back!

Sneak in Ford - let's close his story for real.

NO SHIP! No John/Teyla, No Keller/Ronon! No hugs. No kisses. No bedroom scenes. Leave it for the soap addicts in fan-fic land.

EXPLORE ATLANTIS! Atlantis is supposed to be so great, but it seems to be just a bunch of empty rooms. There has to be something interesting there, yes?

Anonymous said...

Yahooooooo! Season 5 - and still we have the rest of Season 4 to enjoy right now.

For some reason, the Fox station in Austin, Texas, has stopped showing Stargate Atlantis in syndication. Very frustrating. Don't know if Austin is big enough to affect the syndication ratings very much, but this fan misses it a lot!!!!!

Love your blog and thanks for the info, humor and pictures!

are you hoping for beachwear? i'll admit that i am too.

BTW mr. mallozzi maybe you can answer my question about which actor you'd like to have guest on SGA now since there's a fifth season & all. (unless you did & i missed it. which is possible)
major congrats on that BTW.

and about jewel staite being too young for a doctor. there's 2 possibilities for that:
1. the character is a genius.
2. ms. straite is playing older than her age. like 30-ish.

unless the age was mentioned & i missed it, which is possible.

Block your ears, Joe!

SQUEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!

*sighs*

That's better. Well, Season 5 is a go and many happy people have been created today. I would make a list of things I'd like to see in the next season...actually, I think I will make a list:

1) Sheppard kicking butt
2) Teyla kicking butt
3) Ronon kicking butt
4) Rodney kicking...uhm...mental butt *grin*
5) Humour
6) Friendship
7) Family
8) Explosions
9) Ships
10) Planets

*reads over* Yeah, okay, pretty much what you've been doing anyway...so sue me for loving what you guys have been doing and wanting more!

If I had any say, I would ask for a Weir-Asuran arc and for Beckett to becoming a semi-regular again (I admit it...Paul's big blue eyes and lovely Scots brogue got me hooked) and for poor Daniel to finally get to see Atlantis without a time constraint (like that'll ever happen), but hell! SGA is FAB and I love it!

I hope that all the tests and such from the physical come out good on Friday (that's when they're expected, right?) How's the tooth doing now?

OH! I can add an Eddings to the list of fantasy novels to consider: Redemption of Althalus by David and Leigh.

*swallows another squee*

I'm so excited...I just can't hide it....*giggle*
