Huh? We’ve been picked up? Where’d you read this? Are you sure?
Just kidding. I got the call yesterday as I was leaving the doctor’s office (actually, I got the call while I was IN the office and had to step outside to chat). I hurried home and wrote it up as part of my blog entry, then waited for the official press release to come out before posting. Alas, I was informed that the news would only break this morning, so I had to go back and excise the references to the pick-up from my entry, reading, re-reading, and re-reading again to make certain I hadn’t missed an oblique reference that would scoop Variety.
Yep. Great news. But the initial excitement has waned as the reality of coming up with 20 more story ideas has settled in. It really hit home this afternoon when I glanced up at the whiteboard and saw the big, empty space beneath the Season 5 heading and beside the numbers 1 through 20. Marty G. helpfully filled in areas with the following titles: Premiere, Mid-Season Two Parter, and Finale. Awesome! 4 down and 16 to go! I then phoned up Carl and told him his vacation was over. We’d start breaking this Monday and we expected him back in Vancouver and in the office, armed with 5 amazing story ideas (no more than six pages each including all act breaks and major story beats). I, of course, have mine somewhere…
For my part, I celebrated the fifth season pick-up by swinging by the lab for my blood test. I am not a big fan of needles (needles, snakes, heights, kiwis, clowns, paper cuts, curling, long car rides, even longer visual effects meetings, komodo dragons, mullets, musicals, shvests, cruises, flip flops, crunchy pretzels, Turkish candy, overcooked pasta, splinters, toothaches, nightmares where I‘m running and then I wake up but I‘m not really awake and have to keep running, saffron, hospitals, really hot soup, those skinny furry little centipedes I occasionally find in my basement) so I feigned interest in the dated Herman clippings that adorned the far wall as she helped herself. Right around the time she’d filled the fourth tube, I couldn’t help but remark: “Hey, leave some for me.” And that was that. No orange juice. Nary a doughnut. Just an “Apply pressure for two minutes” and I was sent on my way. Now I get to spend (hopefully only) two nerve-wracking days awaiting the results.
I returned home to discover a package awaiting me: a gift basket from Monde Chocolat compliments of my friend Rosemary. Thanks, Rosemary! I’ve got 48 hours before the doctor gives me the results of my blood test, so I’d better start scoffing now!
I’m pleased to see more of you have weighed in on this month’s BOTM selections and I’m hoping more of you continue to do so. And, since some of you have been asking, I’d like to offer up the nominations for next month’s BOTM:
In the fantasy category, it’s -
Stephen King’s Dark Tower Book One (The Gunslinger)
(From Barnes&Noble.com: “This heroic fantasy is set in a world of ominous landscape and macabre menace that is a dark mirror of our own. A spellbinding tale of good versus evil, it features one of Stephen King's most powerful creations - The Gunslinger, a haunting figure who embodies the qualities of a lone hero through the ages, from ancient myth to frontier western legend.”
versus
Roger Silverberg’s Lord Valentine’s Castle
(From Barnes&Noble.com: “Prince Valentine travels the planet Majipoor with a group of eccentric performers. In a quest to discover who Valentine is, his companions help him lay claim to the rewards of birth that await him. But that is only part of his challenge, for he must triumph in the most difficult trial--one that will test his belief, resolve and strength of character.”
In the science fiction category, it’s
Connie Willis’s Doomsday Book
(From Amazon.com: “Connie Willis labored five years on this story of a history student in 2048 who is transported to an English village in the 14th century. The student arrives mistakenly on the eve of the onset of the Black Plague. Her dealings with a family of "contemps" in 1348 and with her historian cohorts lead to complications as the book unfolds into a surprisingly dark, deep conclusion.”
versus
Frank Herbert’s The White Plague
(From Amazon.com: “What if women were an endangered species? It begins in Ireland, but soon spreads throughout the entire world: a virulent new disease expressly designed to target only women. As fully half of the human race dies off at a frightening pace and life on Earth faces extinction, panicked people and governments struggle to cope with the global crisis. Infected areas are quarantined or burned to the ground. The few surviving women are locked away in hidden reserves, while frantic doctors and scientists race to find a cure. Anarchy and violence consume the planet.”)
Start voting. Polls will remain open until midnight Sunday and the winners announced Monday morning.
And finally, before closing this blog entry, I’d like to make mention of longtime blog-reader Maggie who wrote:
“Hi Joe. First of all, I hope all goes well with your blood tests. I'm sure there's nothing to worry about, doctors love being cryptic. Anyways, I don't normally do this (normally I've managed to keep this matter somewhat personal), but at this point I don't know what else to do and I know that hundreds (thousands?) of people read this blog.
My mom's been battling with ovarian cancer for close to four years now, and her latest bout of chemo has been pretty terrible and seemingly never ending, only made worse by her negative catscan results. She's made the decision to discontinue her chemo if her catscan results don't show any sign of improving next month. Obviously I'm terrified, but mostly I'm seeking out as many people as I can to just send positive thoughts our way. I figured something with as many readers as your blog would be a good outlet. I'm a firm believer of positive energy, and at this point I'm worried my family's (while strong) is so anxious that our normal positive vibes just aren't enough. If you could give a (small) shout out on our behalf it would mean the world to me.
Thank you so much. -Maggie”
Maggie, sending positive thoughts your way and hoping your mother’s condition improves. I’m sure a lot of your fellow fans are doing the same.
Today’s pics: The white board, my Monde Chocolat gift basket, the long-overdue pic of my post-birthday decorated office door (Alex suspects the HB stands for Hack Bastard. When I find out who’s responsible, they’re in BIG TROUBLE!).
Today’s video: None today.
Today’s mailbag: Taking the day off today. Back tomorrow. Probably.

"Atlantis truly came out from under the shadow of its sister series this year and proved that it's a hit in its own right. With this season's exciting new characters and vibrant storylines, Atlantis also shows every sign of matching its sibling's longevity."
Bodes well for the years to come wrt Sci-fi's mentality. Congrats to all :)
Congrats to you and everyone associated with Atlantis for the Season 5 renewal! I'm sure you guys won't have any trouble coming up with 20 ideas for next year. I know it is probably too early to ask this, but how many/which actors are under contract for Season 5? Do you anticipate everyone coming back?
I too send my best wishes to Maggie and her family - I hope things get better for you all.
(Completely aside from that - when you say you hate Kiwis do you mean the fruit or New Zealanders in general?)
Nice to see that you took my recommendation about the Gunslinger series. I hope you enjoy at least the first one as much as I do. Heres hoping that your lab results come back good. I just had major foot surgery (had my big toe rebroken) and it made my day better by hearing about the renewal of my favorite show! Congrats!
Congratulations Joe et al . . . You guys deserve a pick up. Looking forward to the rest of season four and now five!
Now what's happening in season six?
"I am not a big fan of needles (needles, snakes, heights, kiwis,..." Oi! Us New Zealanders aren't that bad!
Congrats on S5 renewal. That news made my day. Huzzah. Can't wait for that promised stick-fighting episode ;)
Thanks for posting Maggie's message. I'll keep you guys in my thoughts.
As for book club votes, I vote for Lord Valentine and Doomsday.
Now that you officially have to break season 5, when will you actually get to take your vacation? Also, with the impending trick or treating holliday, could you give us some suggestions for Stargate-inspired costumes.
I once heard Paul Mullie say that, "for not the social conventions in place, I think Joe would dress like Baal all the time."
I vote for: Frank Herbert’s The White Plague!
Season 5 was there ever a doubt!
Now all those little burning ideas for new episodes can be given vent to (rubs hands together with glee) who can you kill off this time round?
Let joy be unbound the mortgage can be paid for another year.
Put the pilots on the back burner.
Lock the book manuscript back in the family vault.
To hell with the raised cholesterol and hyperglycaemia, let’s ALL go out tonight and celebrate.
Well done to everyone.
Pauline
Okay end of stream of consciousness back to reality
Maggie... my thoughts and prayers to you and your family.
Joe...Congrats on the pickup! Looking forward to another year of Sheppard, Carter, Teyla, Ronon, McKay, Keller, Zelenka and Lorne kicking butt. I wouldn't mind seeing Liz, Carson and Ford if the story fits.
Also...I haven't weighed in on your tests yet but I want you to know that you truly are in my thoughts and prayers as well. I hope that you get very good news.
Take care!
Mary Beth
Congratulations on Season 5 of SGA!!! Now we can give a collective sigh of relief and enjoy Season 4 without worrying it's our last SGA season!
WooHoo!
Now we can have:
Stick fighting Sheppard
That little character Grumblespire
(hey...you mentioned him..lol)
Sam and Jack can finally wed
(oh gosh..did I open a can of worms?)
All the SG-1 characters can come on and have a reunion show
All the dead or missing characters will be brought back
The Christmas show can be made
SGA the musical episode can be filmed.
Anything I missed? Maybe everyone's Fairy Godmother can come down and grant everyone's wishes on how the show should be! (snark, snark)
I really am SO happy to have Season 5...I just had to snark a bit there! ;~P
Kimberly
(I posted this under yesterdays blog and then saw this one was up..so you get it again...aren't you glad? :~P)
Oh snap, Joe. Oh snap.
You did it, my mine. Well, not really my man, but the feelings are there ;)
Hah, anyways, I have no worries about you guys coming up with some awesome story lines. I mean, as long as Shep, Rodney, Ronan, and Teyla are there, and Shep gets some (or a LOT) or whump, you still got me. Heck, just show Joe Flanigan and I'm hooked.
But.. you are all so amazing over there, from the cast to the crew. And, being a new-comer to SciFi (and this being the only SciFi I've watched so far) I am thoroughly impressed and you are right, SciFi is dreadfully under-rated. But, you guys keep kicking it and I'll keep showing up to watch on Friday nights and continue to turn down party invitations (you know you're good when...)
All the same, congrats. And I hope everything is going, or will end up really well with your heath, as it is more important than a TV show. (I know thats ironic as I put it after my rants about the show.) But, I do care. And I hope all goes well.
Good luck with the story lines and think of us Shep whumpers as you write!
- menNuniform (cuz I can't seem to log in...)
Congratulations on the season five pickup! :)
I'm definately putting in a vote for The Doomsday Book, it's a great read.
Oh, Maggie. Definitely sending the good vibes out.
Joe, wanted to publicly thank you for the sand. I'm pleased to report that it arrived safely intact. It was a wonderful gift to receive to celebrate the renewal.
What you failed to mention is that not only did I win a vial of actual Stargate sand, but I also won newsprint that had actually been in the Stargate production offices, as well as a FedEx slip written on by none other than Lawren.
I mean, really. What is there not to love about that?!
Please let me know if there are any Atlanta or Georgia delicacies I could send you in exchange for the bonus gift of newprint and FedEx print.
Maggie- You, your mother, and your family will be in my thoughts and prayers.
My book club vote: Roger Silverberg’s Lord Valentine’s Castle & Frank Herbert’s The White Plague
Oh, the perfect excuse to read some Stephen King. My vote goes to The Gunslinger. For the other option, The White Plague sounds interesting!
For Maggie-
Sending warm wishes in your direction and prayers to above... You're not alone.
Hey Joe, I went to donate blood today for the first time ever. I went on my own and was terrified, but for some reason my blood flow was too slow so they couldn't accept the donation. They are, however, sending it off anyway for the preliminary checks (HIV, Hepatitis etc) which I'm nervous about even though I'm fairly confident there's nothing wrong with me, so I know how you feel on the blood test front. My arm still feels like jelly.
Congrats on the season pick-up, I read the announcement this morning when I was half asleep and thought I'd dreamt it until you confirmed it! So who do we bribe to get even more Chuck and Lorne in season 5?
By the way Maggie, my thoughts are with you. My gran is terminally ill with bowel cancer and we fear she may not make it through the rest of the year. I hope her catscans improve.
Congrats on getting Season 5! Now I won't be making my USAF Atlantis uniform for nothing now! I'll still be able to wear it this time next year!
Maggie, I hope everything goes well, my thoughts are with you and your family.
If you are interested in fans' input for Season Five, I would like to see Michael come back and raise all hell.
Congrats on Season 5. I'm really looking forward to the three-episode stick-fighting arc which is to include the very special Arbor Day episode and the exploration of Sheppard's elven heritage.:-)
Does telling you things we liked to see next Season violate the "no fanfiction" rule?
When I saw that stargate had been renewed, I swear the heavens opened and my compuer was bathed in light.ok thats over doing it a bit. But very big congrats on renewal!
And now for something completly diffrent... since you've been involved in stargate what season has been the hardest to write/ spin.
Maggie, my thoughts are going out to your and your mother and family. I know how hard cancer can be, and I am sincerely hoping everything will work out.
My book club votes...
Fantasy: Stephen Kings "The Gunslinger" - it's not very long, but I think this book should be read by everyone (although it's more speculative fiction than fantasy).
Sci-Fi: I'll have to think on it.
Congratulations on getting the pick up. As for story ideas, how about a musical episode involving dentists and wraith-clowns that try to take peoples blood?
Maggie my family’s thoughts are with you and your family.
Keep strong for your mum, she has a very difficult decision to make.
And it may be hard for you to hear and accept it.
Love from the Kennedy Family (Pauline)
Renewed for another year! The news really made my day!!
Maggie, I'm so sorry to hear about your mother. My mother was diag-
nosed with colon cancer almost ex-
actly this time last year. Luckily, she recovered fully, but
I know what a dark place something like this can put you in. I hope
it helps to know that I, and probably every SGA fan out there who reads this, will be sending our best wishes your way!
Joe, I just heard that NBC is considering showing episodes of SciFi's Battlestar Galactica during
the upcoming Writers' Strike (if
it actually goes forward). I know
both Stargate shows are owned by MGM, but do you think some kind
of similar deal could be arranged for one or both shows here? What
a great opportunity to raise the profile of both series, esp. with
Atlantis ongoing, and the two SG-1
movies being releases next year...
Hope things go OK Maggie.
Please have at least five of the people listed here in season five: Beckett, Weir, Ford, Jackson, O'Neill, Mitchell, Hammond, Vala, or Woolsey. Also, are you keeping in the Washington guy scene?
Please answer these questions. 1) Who is the Washington guy? (You never actually said who it was) 2) Can Wraith ascend?
Thanks!
My Fantasy vote: I'm being a bad citizen and abstaining from this vote.
My Sci-fi vote: Frank Herbert’s The White Plague.
Joe, I am having Victory Arms of Happiness at the news. :)! I'm so happy for the S5 pickup!
That is very sad to hear Maggie. All my hopes and positive thoughts are directed towards you, your anxious family, and your mother right now. Fingers crossed that the catscans will show some improvement soon!

Oh, and Joe, congrats again on that 5th season! I didn't post this last night because I was late for bed, but here it is:
They are HAPPY!!
...for the Season 5 renewal, that is.
Lastly, a question: Does Atlantis have 2 ZPMs now? One that we already had (but heavily drained) and the new one from the Replicator Homeworld? Does this development play any major roles in Season 4?
Thanks a bunch! I can't wait till Monday; business as usual, eh?
Congratulations. I have two questions : 1. Can the Goa'uld take Wraith hosts? and 2. How are the Wraith affected by zat blasts? Thanks.
Oh I didn't read yesterday's blog but I wanted to share, The Dresden Files books are very nice. I have read all of them and currently working my way through White Night. There is lots of action, adventure, magic, and humor. The books have reduced me rolling on the floor in side stitching laughter more than once.
Woah.... 5 stories from Carl!? Woot, you guys really are going full-on with this! LOVE IT!
I have a question about the upcoming story-breaking for Season 5: 1)when you guys write/discuss story line episodes like you did with 'Reunion', do you/rest of production staff discuss in detail the possible future direction the story could go? Say, Ronon's friend that retreats at the end of 'Reunion'. How much discussion goes into a future plan for that character? 2. Do you/rest of staff already discuss, in this case, Season 5 during your production of S. 4? I.e. have you laid out some guidelines the staff hopes to follow in, now, S.5? or... are ideas like this not tossed around until now when you all will get together when you know for sure Season 5 is on!?
re: your blood tests
Hope you don't find out you're pregnant. God knows everyone else there is (or recently was).
Quit slipping Viagra into the drinking water!
Also: Congrats on season FIVE!
hi joe -
i read "the legacy of heorot" several years ago and enjoyed it very much, as i have most of niven's work. i thought the sequel "beowulf's children' not quite as good, but still entertaining. have you ever tried anything by andre norton?
So, I've been lurking around in the background for a month or so and just wanted to offer my congratulations on being picked up for another season! Just one more thing to look forward to post-college graduation. (Better than Real Life? Mayhap. At least for an hour a week).
Anyway, it's sort of a lame introduction on my part, but I wanted to get that out there along with everyone else. You know, fan appreciation stuff. Oh, and the blog's okay, too... (dry humor tags needed? It's sometimes hard to tell in text alone.)
As a longtime Stephen King fan (The Stand is one of my all time favorite books) I vote for the Gunslinger.
And hooray for season 5!!!!
Good to hear SGA's pick up, quality Sci-Fi viewing assured for another year at least and a continued excuse for vegging in front of the tube/ stimulating the geek receptors.
The Gunslinger and The White Plague are my votes.
Maggie positive thoughts on route, best wishes.

That might be a bit of a problem, considering that they're already married. But maybe they could clarify when they married [just after Threads or during Continuum]?
Yay Season Five! Good luck with your story ideas. And good luck with your lab results.
Connie Willis’s Doomsday Book
Now that the 5th season has been picked up, I assume the promised Toilet episodes and Stick fighting episodes etc will be there? You are a man of your words right? :)
Joe,
Congratulations on the pickup for season 5! You should have heard the squee 'round fandom this morning when the news broke. Obviously, we're all thrilled. And never has a picture of a mostly-empty whiteboard made me so happy. Well done!
girly_curl_3
P.S. Sending good karma to Maggie's mom!
Positive vibes go out to Maggie's Mom and the rest of her family :) May there be good news for the future.
Ok, first Dark Tower, I have always been meaning to read that book and I have heard alot of good things about. So vote for that.
For the sci fi, I am a huge fan of Frank herbert, i loved adored, would marry his Dune Series(not a big fan of the books that continue or preceed the series written by his son and the other author). So my vote is for the Frank herbert Story.
Oh, and by the way - if you read Gunslinger, STOP THERE. The rest will only lead to misery.
I pick this book, Connie Willis’s Doomsday Book, as the scifi selection. It sounds interesting to me as I enjoy time travel.
I'm not a fantasy reader, and I'm not a King fan. I tried reading "Christine" when I was a teenager, and I was bored out of mind.
Have you ever read "Rosemary's Baby" by Ira Levin? Good scary book, much scarier than the movie. I recommend it if you feel adventurous.
Congrats on the season 5 pick up. :)
OH..I saw the can of oatmeal the other day..so another picture of you eating something average would be cool to see. :)
Have a good day.

Best wishes to Maggie and I hope good news is in her family's future...
My vote for the sci-fi book: The White Plague by Herbert. I read it a while back and thought it was excellent.
Joe, the news of the renewal greeted me this morning when I logged into my journaling community, and it made my day. So looking forward to the remainder of this season, and to seeing what y'all come up with next season (and many seasons to come). Congratulations to all. Bring on the Hewlett! :)
Congrats on Season 5. Can we have the exploration of friendships between the characters next season. More female bonding. Less John and Rodney. They are not an interesting pair. Rodney is trying too hard to be liked by the Handsome Jock.
I hope your tests go well. Do you drink red wine? That's supposed to help lower the bad cholesterol. Here's a link to an article that suggests you can eat red grapes or grape juice and get the same benefits: http://tinyurl.com/ysmnxv
So if you don't like red wine... how about red grapes or red grape juice?
I had an interesting dream last night. My husband and I were at your house for a party. You were in the kitchen making tons of food. I held or carried Lulu around the whole night...until someone wanted to hold her and said I was hogging her..lol. I never saw Fondy...but I knew she was there, showing people around. You had a huge basement with a pool table(we talked about it, but I never saw it) and your family room had a wall of glass windows looking out into a beautiful back yard. You throw a nice party...at least in my dreams! Your blogs of dogs and food are affecting my dreams now! ;~)
Kimberly
1). Will we see, in this season or season 5, the Trust again? Or will said story-line be resolved in some way in either of the upcoming movies?
I thought it was a clever way for the broken Goa'uld to seek revenge by blending (pun intended) into our planet's governments and organizations.
Their attempts to blow up Atlantis in season 2 added a nice touch of continuity to the franchise, as well.
We know we're stuck with them, and they're undoubtedly scheming something tremendous to cripple or destroy our world.
2). On a completely unrelated note, did you ever read Edgar Rice Burrough's Pellucidar series? If so, what'd you think about it?
Congrats for the pickup. Better get writing now. For the book, I would say go with the Gunslinger, but with this caveat. It seems crap because it is four short stories put together rather than one coherent narrative, and Roland seems like an evil bastard because there's very little character development of him. So I would suggest that you read the Gunslinger quickly (since it's short) and make the book of the month The Drawing of the Three, since that's when the series starts to get good. By the way Joe, when you say you don't like kiwis, I hope you mean the fruit or the bird.
I vote for The Gunslinger and The White Plague.
Congratulations on the pickup; I have no doubts that you and the other writers/producers will continue to successfully entertain me. :)
Are all the actors signed for Season 5? What about Amanda, I thought her contract was only this year?
Congratulations on the fifth season pick up - can't wait for it even if we are only three episodes into season four here in England.
As someone who should be getting results in about 7 1/2 hours for her own bloodtest - hope yours are all clear.
Maggie - My thoughts and best wishes are floating out there for you, your mother and the rest of your family.
Maggie,
Many positive thoughts and prayers are going out to you and your family. Remember to take time and laugh at least once a day through these difficult times (it really helps, I know from experience).
And Joe, good thoughts and prayers are coming your way as well.
Btw, the SJHW say 'Hi' :)
Atlantis Season 5 was a given when I heard that the end of Season 4 was entitled The Last Man ;) you really had us going there! a tremendous cliffhanger I'm sure, this season has been terrific so far.
"Lord Valentine’s Castle" Joe you HAVE to read that!! one of my all-time fave series.
Vibes+++ to Maggie's mom. DD
This is good news!! Congratulations to the team!!
And Joe, no need to worry for something you can't change or influence at the moment - i'm sure your blood test will be A1 (as long as it doesn't confirm you're family with John Tesh or that you are actually turning into chocolate)
Maggie, here's a burst of positive energy coming your way for you, your mom and family. No matter what happens, just truly believe it's for the best. Even when it's hard, little miracles will pop to remind you that it's all ok.
When you're coming up with new episodes for a season do you generally have ideas that form in the back of the head gradually, writing them down as you get them, or is it generally something where you sit down and think of ideas in a more focused session?
Hi Joe, I'm a frequently reader of your blog but this is my first comment. Why? Because I’m very happy, that season 5 will come!!! It's the best (only good) news in this bad day... And take me from depression!!! So I'd like congratulate you and cast and crew to next season and thank all of you and sci-fi, because it make me happy... My question is... Are there planed any changes in a cast? Because everyone has own favorite character and don't like to loose them... For me it's Carter and Zelenka... So can I enjoy them in next season? I know, maybe it's early to ask, but.... ;) Thanks for answer. Please excuse my bucks in English...
Greetings from Czech Republic Marti
So glad to hear about Season 5! I admit, at first glance I thought the blank "Season 5" whiteboard was bad news, then I realized that if the blanks were there, they were there because they now needed to be filled in.
Sadly, the only book of the four that I've read is The Majipoor Chronicles (and also Lord Valentine's Castle). I did enjoy it, and even after twenty years there are still scenes I remember. It's not a book that leaps to mind as "Wow the best fantasy novel I've ever read!," but I would certainly say, "Sure, read it, it's pretty good."
Maggie, Her Mother and her family will be in my thoughts and prayers.
May god bless all of you.
hi, joe,
well, i was going to say nice and comforting things about your upcoming test results, but screw that, i know where my priorities lie...
CONGRATZ ON A SEASON 5 PICKUP!!! :D :D
sally :D
When you said you're afraid of kiwis, did you mean a) the furry little fruit b) the feathery little bird c) people from New Zealand?
Congrats on Atlantis. Can't wait to actually see the new season. Being down under does make keeping up with ones favorite shows difficult.
White Plague is a wonderful book. Read it back when it was first released. I don't know if it will be as chilling as when it was first released but it certainly gives one a pause to think.
Ann M.
Congratulations to you Joe and all those behind the scenes that make the show possible. Great to hear there will be a 5th season. Excellent!
Also i would like to say chin up to Maggie. My thoughts are with you here in the UK.
Hi Joe..
Such great news re Season 5.. As I have said before with all the great talent there at SGA , they would be insane not to renew.. We need something on the Scifi station that's actually Sci Fi.. Re your doctor's appointment and blood test.. Is it possible to have a condition as chocolate in the blood? Regardless ...I have a feeling you will be fine..
Anyway it's grand re the renewal..
Take care Maggie.. Love is a power that can see us through any trial..
Dori
Congratulations on 5th season pick-up!!! Very happy to see that!!! Now DON'T screw it up! ;)
I think this sums up about the pick up! WOOOOOHOOOOO!!!!!!
My thought are with Maggie and her family.
"Everything that is done in the world is done by hope."

Well, hey, you know at least one of those is the big stick-fighting episode. I know we're all looking forward to that. Speaking off, what did Flanigan say when you told him he has to learn a whole episode's worth of stick fighting choreography? ;-)
Regarding the book club, put me down for several votes for King's Gunslinger. I liked Lord Valentine's Castle well enough, but nothing compares to King's Dark Tower series. I think I'd have to break out my copy for a reread if you choose that one.
I'm not familiar with either of the scifi choices, but based on the blurbs you posted, I'd go with Doomsday Book. I'm always up for a good time-travel story.
Congrats again on the season 5 pickup. I couldn't be more thrilled for all of you. \0/
Maggie ~
My hearts goes out to your mother. I was lucky -- they caught my endomitrial cancer early and were able to treat it with surgery alone. It's truly a frightening thing, though, how our bodies can betray us! Thank you for sharing your mother's story here; I hope other women will get tested, that it will save their lives. (It took losing four liters of blood for me to find out, when I went to the emergency room. It's not a method I would recommend.) My thoughts are with your mother. *send get-well vibes*
Joe~
A la Rodney's warning in Doppelganger about making people dream stuff, after reading your blog with your talk of blood tests, I had a nightmare last night in which I was back in the hospital again, getting more blood tests myself! Thanks a lot! (Well, okay, watching House last night might have had something to do with it too, but I never have dreams like that after ER ...)
And please stop taunting us! I mean what's the big idea, showing us a nearly-blank board and whinging of needing to come up with 20 new stories when you know there are hundreds of us (or more?) who would give anything to write for the show yet will never get the chance? Meanie!! Honestly, if you're looking for sympathy in that regard, you're not going to find it here! LOL ;P Besides, seeing as it means we get a fifth season, I'm all for you (and the rest of the writing crew) suffering for your muses ....
First of all, I hope the blood work results turn out well. :) I'm no fan of needles either...so I can empathize there!!
Secondly CONGRATULATIONS on the marvelous news of a Season 5 pickup. :D I seriously cannot tell you how much that makes my day. :) I look forward to seein' what those creative minds of yours come up with for the Atlantis bunch. :)
As for BOTM; I had voted for Lord Foul's Bane last time cuz it was one I'd actually *heard* of, but once begun I was completely turned off by the Covenant character. I like my "good guys" to actually be at least decent guys. I mean, while no one is perfect, obviously...a rapist is hardly my ideal hero. And I think that overshadowed most anything I might've gotten out of it.
Hmm...I'm not familiar with any of the books (or authors) for this month's suggestions. So my vote might be pretty pointless but on principle I'm not a Stephen King reader.
Hope all is well with Fondy and the little dogs too. :)
Wahooo!
P.S. I vote for a Zelenka-focused ep. Beckett got one first season, after all ....
'Gunslinger' and 'Doomsday' have my votes.
Will we see a Loren or Zalenko episode?
When will someone call Teyla 'Data'? No contractions at all? Earther bad habits aren't rubbing off on her?
Does a Stargate not engage because someone else is using it? The ancients thought of call waiting?
Lastly, do the Wraith have allies? I'm not talking those weird worshippers, but rather some race that helped them beat the Ancients. Seems to me they couldn't have gotten as far as they did without help.
Congrats to you, the cast and crew on the season 5 pick up! Now, get to work! :P
I hope your lab results come back all good. Blood draws are always the worst. Last time the vampires took 7 vials from me. Yeah that was fun! And no juice either, what's up with that? Remember no news from the doctor is good news.
Any idea when fans in Canada will be able to watch season 3 or 4 on Space Channel?
And how do you deal with the Vancouver weather? It's starting feel a lot like Vancouver here in Calgary.
Once again Congrats Joe!
*sends good vibes to Maggie and her family*
-Katie
Ooh. The blank whiteboard. Daunting. Good luck!
Maggie, my thoughts are with you and your family. :)
And Joe, my vote's on "Stephen King’s Dark Tower Book One (The Gunslinger)"! Also... what do you not like about kiwis? The texture? The taste? Or are you allergic?
To Shawna's post: lol! we do need a "Quartet"! (has fun reading the other storyline posts) I just wanna see wraith babies at some point :P
Joe:
Concerning season 5: yay!! that's so awesome! :D congrats :D
you said before that the reason you haven't brought Ford back is because you don't have any storyline ideas for him. Now that there's going to be a season 5, do you have any storyline ideas worth bringing Elizabeth Weir back? (I'm not looking for what the story will be, just a yes or no)
Have you seen the new show on FoodTV called "The Next Iron Chef"? One of the regulars must have quit. In any case, the competitors - eight chefs previously appearing on ICA as challengers - take on the most interesting tasks, such as making desserts out of seafood. I find it extremely entertaining - thanks to the ICA hosts :)
Saw the announcement on Sci Fi and came over here. Great news, and I have a few extra months to plan the Season 5 Premeire Party, never mind getting hold of the door prizes. Congratulations to you and your co-conspirators. And surely you're not suggesting you havent a clue on how the first episode was going to go, having written a cliffhanger for this season?
For the book club suggestions, I vote for Lord Valentine's Castle and Doomsday Book. Not read the first, but have the second. I listened to an audiobook version of King's book and wasnt impressed.
Just a couple of questions. You start working on season 5 next Monday. When will you begin actual filming? How long before you have a work schedule of when you will finish production on season five? Enjoy your last few days of "vacation" and know we're all happy to see you getting back into harness and gainful employment in the near future.
First of all to maggie and dreamkat, I know what you are going through having lost my mother to colon cancer 9 and half years ago and my thoughts and prayers go out to you and your families.
As far as ideas for season 5, more stories involving the Travelers or maybe just Larrin, because I would love to see more episodes with Jill Wagner. :-) After Paul and you seemingly making a big deal about them in the summer Digital Press Tour, I thought we would see more of them this season. I'm really looking forward to Travelers on Friday, but I hope the Ancient warship they have doesn't get destroyed too soon like you guys usually do to Ancient warships. :-)
Joe, 5th Year Pick Up -- I'm doing my Happy Dance! Looking forward to the rest of the year and great things to come in the future...
Maggie, sending out positive thoughts to you and your family at this difficult time.
I am so glad that there will be a fifth season of Atlantis.
And for Maggie: You and your family will be in my thoughts and prayers. I hope for the best for your Mom.
Joe - just curious if the actors have been signed for season 5 and if not how it is possible to start "breaking" stories for season 5 when you do not yet know which actors will be signed for next season, ergo you do not know which chracters you will have to write for. Thanks for the insights.
Congratulations! Here's to hoping the Apollo is a regular part of season 5.
The extra/background business is slowing down quite a bit these days. Any work available at Bridge Studios? Perhaps a season 5 creative consultant, a personal trainer for the main cast (and execs), or someone to clean the washrooms and empty garbage bins?
Anyhoo, I am excited to hear that season 5 is a go. That is over 35 more episodes of SGA that I will get to watch! I was starting to get worried. I guess this means syndication as well. Wonderful.
Congratulations on the Season 5 pickup!!! If I had confetti, I would totally throw it. :D
I vote for Stephen King and Frank Herbert. (For what it's worth, I've read The Doomsday Book and I didn't care for it at all. The 'twist' at the end, was a sad disappointment.)
For Maggie and her Mum,
Here's hoping all goes well. Best wishes and happy thoughts.

Hey Joe!
Talk to Joey F about a storyline for season 5 - I met him at Armageddon and gave him a book of manips I'd done for hime (one of them was a send-up of Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure, titled "John & Rodney's Excellent Adventure") - he thought that was a cool title to give a future Atlantis episode!
So how about it, huh, huh???
- Dana
Hi, Joe
I am very happy with the news!
Season 5 is coming! Great!!!
Congrads on season 5, now i dont feel so bad for Downloading Season 4.
God Bless Maggie and your MOM!
Any idea how you want to end season 5?
Wow, 73 comments already, and just when I remembered another question I was planning to ask too.
Oh well, if you get to it: the 6th episode of the 5th Season of Atlantis will be the 300th episode of the Stargate franchise. Do you think you guys will be doing anything special for it?
Maggie - Sweetie, I'm so full of positive vibes at the moment from meeting Joe F at "Armageddon" in Melbourne, I have tons to spare! Please add mine to the many already flowing your way!
Hugs,
Dana
Major congrats on a season 5! No more gut wrenching season 4 show endings! YAY!!
By the way, you forgot to add raisins to your list. We all know it's certainly on mine.
Although I wonder...My hate for raisins makes me question why I have such a huge love affair with red grapes.
Mmmm...
Congrats on the series renewal!
As for the books, I tried to read the Stephen King novel and got bogged down in what I thought was uninteresting narrative. So I'd vote for Lord Valentine's Castle. I also vote for Frank Herbert's book.
Positive thoughts go out to Maggie and her family.
Congrats on the renewal, cannot be happier at this current moment about anything. The 100th episode being the same episode as the season 5 finale, you up for it :) You dissapointed in a way you cannot have a seperate episode to deal with each the 100th episode and the season finale or are you glad as it means you can make one fantastic episode.
Any idea what Rob and Brad's role in the series will be given that the definate future of the SG-1 films is not final yet??
1. Hooray for S5!
2. Praying for Maggie, mom and family! (not to mention your tests)
3a. I vote for Robert Silverberg. I've wanted to read that series for a while.
3b. I vote for Frank Herbert's White Plague, tho' both sound fascinating. White Plague reminded me of a DVD I've been meaning to watch, "Children of Men".
Apocofic love...
At last it's official! YES!!
Excuse me whilst I go dance and scream in the streets. If I'm not back tomorrow, it's likely I've been arrested for disturbing the peace.
What's to become of the pilot scripts you were/are/would be working on? Back burner for now? ...I know it's horrible, but... I seriously cannot feel upset. I'm just way too delighted right now. ^_^' Sorry. I'll try and muster up some sympathy tomorrow... er... assuming I don't get distracted with noise-pollution-citations.
And congratulations!!!
Have you seen or plan to see the South Park that aired the 24th. It parodied Stargate pretty directly.
And Congrats on the 5th season pick-up.
What High Definition format is Stargate Atlantis coming out on? I am in the market for buying a HD player and the Stargate high definition format is what I am going to go for been waiting months for Stargate High Definition to come out.
Congratulations! This is absolutely fantastic, thank you for keep SGA alive! *runs screaming into the next room*
Wooohooo, we get a fifth season!!! Congratulations! *grins and does happy dance* Now maybe we can get LTC Paul Davis to come to Atlantis (surely he would have been promoted by this time). After all, he's the perfect harbinger of doom for that midseason cliffhanger episode.
As for your physical, I wouldn't worry too much unless high cholesterol levels run in your family. I'll be keeping my fingers crossed for you, though.
Thank you for the heads up on Maggie's Mom, I'll be adding her to my list of folks to send healing, positive vibes.
Lastly, my vote for the sci-fi half of the book club goes to "Doomsday Book". That one sounds truly fascinating!
Congratulations on Season 5!
I vote for Stephen King’s Dark Tower Book One and Frank Herbert's White Plague.
Woot! Season 5 :) Great news. looking forward to it already
Hi Joe, a big HUG for Season 5 renewal - as if the network had much choice, I think the fan reaction must have given TPTB something to think about. Sorry but I'll have to give the book club another miss - not even the promise of free choclate could make me read the fantsy selections.
Also, I would like to give a big shout out to Maggie who's Mum has discontinued her treatment. I lost my Mum 10 yrs ago and so I know exactly what she is going through and I will keep a candle lit for her and her Mum. Cancer sux!!!
Kiwis?!?! You're scared of Kiwis?!?! Good th
Seriously?!
Lol! Good thing they're only found here.
But YAY! *dances* That's so exciting!
Congrats to the all involved with Stargate Atlantis.
Now a request...
More Lorne Please in Season 5
Congratulations on the season 5 pick-up! You and the rest of the hard-working staff have certainly earned it! Good luck!
Also, I'd like to cast a vote for for the first Dark Tower book!
Lastly, I'd like to add my best regards and positive energy to Maggie and her family.
Hi Joe! How exciting to hear about season 5! Congratulations to everyone on the cast and crew! And on my birthday, too! Aren't october birthdays the best??
You'll have to let us know how the Monde chocolate basket (er, not the basket itself of course unless you're into that kinda thing ;) ) tastes - do you share them with Fondy or do you keep them all to yourself?!
Anyway, my business partner and I have finally started to debut our chocolate product, and if you are interested, perhaps you would like some samples? Let me know where to send them!
Oh - and happy belated birthday!
- chokolaj
congratulations on your renewal. if only battlestar galactica had survived as well :(
Yay for Season 5....doing little happy dance!!! Cannot wait for more David Hewlett!
Could we have Sheppard(bantose rods) face off against McKay(wooden sword)?? Who would win if you could fast-track McKay's abilityies??
Who would win in a fight between Mitchell and Ronon, because Mitchell is a really good fighter(against the rebel Jaffa guys)??
Hi Joe!
I hope your blood results are good, good, good! :)
I haven't read any of the potential books for next month's Book Club. My votes are for Lord Valentine and Doomsday.
CONGRATS on the S5 pickup!! I've done lots of happy dancing and WooHooing for you and the team!
Maggie: my prayers are with you and your family.
You don't like snakes? What snaky feature brings this about (aboot)?
Could SG-1(-carter) be part of the SGA(s5) two-parter?? because in all fairness they had the guys from SGA on SG-1, could we return the favor??
How long would the shield last if each of the ten shield emmiters had a
ZPM each to power it??
When will be able to see an ancient factory(eg. for building ships, and weapons?
Would it be possible to beam a nuke into a wraith hive using merlin's dimension shifting device, if you could turn it off before it detonates??
Good thoughts and prana to Maggie and Mom. I've been there.
Congrats on the Season Five pickup, JM. I can tell from the tone of your post that you're giddy with delight. I share your joy.
None of your literary picks inspire me today, but in the words of Scarlett O'Hara, I'll think about it tomorrow.
While i cannot vote in the fantasy category as my plate is totally and completely full over there(am re-reading the blood series, and the dresden files novels. In the Sci Fi category I completely and whole heartedly vote for "Frank Herbert’s The White Plague". I think I can find time to squeeze it in between such page turners as "the veterinarians complete guide to parasitology", "disease and how to treat it", "the veterinary technicians handbook to treating large animals", and "cats: a complete guide to the psyche and workings".
Congrats on Season 5. I have a few episode titles you might like to try. The Episode After the Premier. That Episode Before the Second to the Last Episode. The Other Prime Number Episode. And, my personal favorite - A Very Special Episode.
Weighing in on the BOTM picks - Stephen King because I'm a big Stephen King fan, and even though it's not getting a lot of votes, Connie Willis because I really enjoyed "To Say Nothing of the Dog".
For Maggie: I will be praying for you and your mother. - "Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus." (Philippians 4:6-7)
SueS
Congrats, I am excited about a season 5. This made my day. That and the Red Sox leading 13:1 in the 8th inning.
Now just tell us that Carson is coming back in Season 5! Please, pretty please. I'll promise lots of chocolate!
Congrats on S5 of Atlantis; and holding you to the Daniels a priority to be in an eps during that season.
And got any ideas what you would like to do for the 100th eps???
YES!!!!!! When I heard you got the pick up this morning I was overjoyed!!!
Just think:
Another year of fans bombarding you to have characters hook up or to resurrect the dead!!!!
Good luck with your blood test!
I'm back.
My Doctor is an extremely... large man. I may have kind of made a sarcastic remark when he asked me about my OWN weight (if it had been going up or down) that he may have interprated to be aimed at him. This resulted in him checking off almost every available box on that silly blood test sheet. Are you sure you didn't unintentionally insult your doctor? :P
I'm voting for The Doomsday Book... I've read it, but its been awhile. It was pretty amazing and I hope that everyone enjoys it if it gets picked! It certainly has a special place on my bookshelf as it was the first sci-fi-ish book that I read and enjoyed.
hi, joe,
are you guys (ptb) interested in sam being/continuing in season 5?
sally :D
I just wanted to say that I've been reading your blog for awhile and made my first trip up to vancouver this past week -- and after hearing about their chocolates so much I had to make a special trip to Monde Chocolate yesterday before I left...it was a bit like chocolate heaven! I haven't even started on the zotter bars, but have sampled some of the store's own chocolates and it was worth the trip (well, 2 actually, since we found it on Monday but they were closed). Congrats on Season 5 as well!
Please please please please please make the good doctor Zelenka a regular for season five. Please. He deserves it and fans would love it.
Congrats on the season 5 pickup! Hope there is many more seasons to come.
Good Luck on the blood tests, as well.
Congratulations for getting a season 5 of Atlantis!
Any Ideas for the 100th Episode?
NZJ
hehe Atlantis 5, is that like Babylon 5? Are you going to see an ancient space station in Season 5? *hint hint*?
Yay for season 5! Season 4 has been fantastic so far, I'm looking forward to the rest of this season and the beginning of the next.
thank you :)
Congrats on the pick up!!! The party's just gettin started for us fans. Luckily for us we just have to sit back and enjoy the show once you're done slaving over it. :) Good luck with season 5 and filling up that whiteboard! Season 4 has be fantastic!
Congratulations on the season 5 pick up! That news made my day. Hope all goes well with the lab results.
Please, please, please consider bringing Elizabeth back for season five.
Regardless of whether scifi sees a 1.2 (that's what it was based on the criteria every other show is judged on) as a good figure, you HAVE lost viewers because of the dumping of both Torri and Paul.
Please reconsider your decision with Torri. I know that you personally weren't involved in Paul's sacking, but you've said you were happy with the decision to get rid of Torri.
Please show her the respect she deserves, especially after the comments you've made towards her, which have come off as pretty out of line.
Can you NOT bring Tapping back for season five?
I love the show, I can cope with a lot of things, but many fans can't stand Carter.
She's boring. Bland. Just ... blah.
Please. Amanda's done 11 years with this franchise. Let her move on, and let those who don't like Carter have a show they can actually watch. If I have to see her and Rodney in a scene together one more time, I'm going to scream.
Woohoo! I've been checking your blog everyday hoping for some good news. Finally! Glad to hear SciFi had the common sense to give you a 5th season. We're going to celebrate on Friday with some breakfast at Fred62 in LA. Ever been?
Hallelujah! Congrats on the S5 pickup!
Maggie many prayers and good thoughts to you and your family!!!
Whaaa, can't even wait for the new stories =) And Kdvb1 has wonderful ideas =)..
Take care and have a nice day!!
Coucou Joe!
Je tenais à vous féliciter vous et toute la crew pour la saison 5 d'Atlantis! Sachez en tout cas que les fans francophones sont heureux de cette nouvelle!
Sinon j'avais quelques petites questions :
Gros bisous
Marine
CONGRATS for the fifth season, it's a really great news, i'm happy. Continue to give us a lot of information about our favorite show !
Very positive and strong thoughts for maggie and her family !
Hi Joe !
Congrats for the fifth season. I'm so happy ! Hope you'll come up with new awesome ideas... wait... I don't worry, I know you will :D
Please continue to tell us all you can possibly do about the show (and your pugs, your meals, your books of course)
***sending very strong and positive thoughts for maggie and her family***
Have a nice day !
Quilani
Maggie, I really hope your mother's condition improves. Best wishes!

Re: BOTM poll
I've read--and thoroughly enjoyed!--Lord Valentine's Castle, so I'm going to vote for The Gunslinger for the fantasy book. And I'll vote for White Plague for the science fiction book, as I've read Doomsday Book as well. Heh, if only all choices were so easy. :-)
My vote for fantasy category:Roger Silverberg’s Lord Valentine’s Castle.
For the science fiction category: Connie Willis’s Doomsday Book.
And thanks again for the blog (the Carl part had me giggling).
So are you scared of Kiwis as people? Or kiwis our bird? And yay for season 5 pick up! And just so you know there is a massive fan base here in New Zealand!
Congratulations Joe, to you and everyone at SGA!! I'm so happy for you all and selfishly so happy for me. :) Got the news this morning just as I was sitting down to a long day...The only reason I did jump up and cher was that I was concerned about being escorted from my desk and my swipe card revoked. I can't imagine how elated y'all must be!! YAY!!!!
My thoughts and wishes of good things and happiness go out to Maggie with as much mental power as I can muster! We're with you, Maggie!!
Finally..my vote goes for the Gunslinger (been wanting to read that for a long time) and Connie Willis' book.
Congrats again Joe!!!!
Congrats on getting renewed for a 5th season, I look forward to what you and the writers come up with for the future. Keep up the outstanding work, I really appreciate it, take care.
Hey Joe, did you happen to catch South Park last night (24th)? I'm sure you guys know already, but they spoofed stargate! How awesome is that, Stargate on South Park!
The "doorway":
South Park's Stargate... Only 8 Chevrons?
Two of my most favorite shows together, Ahhhh the awesomeness! Sooo... Now, when will we find out that Shep is a fan of South Park? ;) After all, Jack had the Simpsons.
P.S.
Another congrats on Season 5! Better get that white board filled up! At least the stick-fighting on arbor day, and giant mainland snake 2-parters will take up some space ;). And i personally am still hoping for that "Katie Brown eaten by alien plant" 3-parter i pitched to ya.
Congratulations on the S5 pick up looking forward to seeing what new and innovative things you guys can come up with. Will there be any chance of seeing Amanda and Jewel in the new season?
Season 5, congrats. Please write a lot more Radek versus Rodney dialogue.
My book vote: Stephen King, The Gunslinger.
All the best to Maggie's family
Congratulations on the renewal! Must be a load off your mind, right? (or perhaps it makes things worse, as you will have to begin spinning for season 5 soon!)
With a now-confirmed season 5 in mind, I have a couple of questions:
1. Does this mean we'll get to see Daniel make his way to Atlantis?
2. If the above is true, any chance for Vala to make an appearance?? Please!
3. Is there a possibility that Weir could pop up in the fifth season as well?
Thanks!! And congratulations again.
I've seen this article http://www.variety.com/article/VR1117974591.html?categoryid=14&cs=1 Please bring back Jack for a couple of episodes.
I'm sending a special prayer your way Maggie. Keep strong!
I'm so happy about the Season Five pick-up! I was at work and took a peek at the Gateworld site and there it was! I jumped up and did a happy dance with a big "Woo Hoo"! I scared a couple of co-workers with my shout out...LOL!
Congrats Joe and everyone at SGA headquarters! Season Five WOO!
I told my coworker that I could now be happy for another year, because that's how great this show is :) Congratulations to one and all!
So running down the blogger ep list, the season should look something like:
--Shep makes out with Teyla
--Shep makes out with McKay
--Carson returns and we see some Keller whump
--Shep gets beat with sticks
--RepliWeir and Carter duke it out for control of the city
--Ronon and Teyla make out
--Ford returns and ... yeah, not nothing here (no offense to Ford)
--McKay takes over the galaxy, using his mind
--Shep's ever-present wristband and untied boots come to life and tell their story to Johnny Cash playing in the background
--Zelenka turns into a goldfish
--something with the Wraith
--and my favorite: an episode that gives all the other episodes away.
Hmm, perhaps time for coffee...
Congrats again!
To Maggie and her Family:
My Positive thoughts are with your mom.
((((((((((MAGGIE"S MOM))))))))))))
Congratulations to everybody involved, Season 5 - YAY!!
But seriously - you get orange juice when you have a blood test?!
I've never had orange juice or the like after a blood test. (Mind you, NHS budgets and all that....)
Last time I had 5 bottles taken (to test for anaemia apparently - if i wasn't before i certainly was after!) and just got sent on my merry, somewhat light-headed, way!
But - Season 5 - YAY!!
Oooo - i've got one of those emails! First time ever! There's $25,200,000, but i only get 40%, she wants 50% for herself so she can come to Britain! Apparently Mr John Korovo and HER wife were killed in a plane crash.
Sorry, rambling now.
Season 5 - YAY!! :D
First I would like to congratulate you and all your guys for the renewal of Stargate Atlantis, this news makes me feel so glad ! ;-)
Well, I have little questions about the future season. Like I'm French I would like to know if we will see any French or European ship in the fifth season. In the show the Great Britain and the France know that the Stargate Program exists so, why not ? More over, will we see any French scientists in this season ? Just a little patch on a uniform will satisfy ourselves ;-D
Have a great day !
Hi Joe,
Joe,
Congrats to you and everyone at Atlantis! Looks like I still have ONE reason to tune into SCI-FI, and I'm REALLY stoked for Season 5. Also, I don't recall seeing the "Get in the Gate Sweepstakes" this or last year. Has that been shelved for Atlantis?
Maggie,
I lost my mother to cancer two years ago. I know how devastating it can be. I'm sending you my BEST thoughts and wishes.
Dear Mr M.,
Greetings from Tipperary.Firstly, Congrats on Season 5! Knew it would happen, and my bet was safe... Secondly, hope the blood tests are ok...Thirdly, great to get a glimpse of Mr Cooper's insight into Episodes and Ark of Truth. Is there a release date for Europe yet??
Finally, I vote for Lord Valentine's Castle and The White Plague.... Have you read Raymond E Feist? The Magician?
Congrats again to all at SGA!! Just caught Reunion last night..Awesome!
Shirt'n'Tie
Go for "The White Plague". I read it years ago and it is excellent.
I vote Dark Tower and White Plauge.
I know a friend who read the Dark Tower series as it came out, she recommends that you wait an unreasonable amount of time before choosing book 2. Just so I can have the pleasure of waiting like she did.
Congratulations on the pick up!
Positive Thoughts heading your way Maggie :D . Congrats on the new season pick-up Joe!
I read Lord Valentine's Castle back in high school and thought it was fantastic, but I haven't read the other book, so that'll be it for my participation there.
Congrats on the season 5 pick-up.
To Maggie - My condolences for your mom. I lost mine to breast cancer a little over a decade to go. It's a rough way to go, but I can really respect her decision to make the most of the time she has left rather than continue with treatment.
I'll keep you in my thoughts while you're waiting for your test results. *virtual hug*
Even tho, I don't want to lose Keller, I was thinking wouldn't it be cool to have Carson back in S5. There isn't anything written in stone that says you can't have two great doctors on one show. One doc cannot work around the clock. ;)
You have a lot of great scientists (Rodney, Radek, and now Carter) why not Doctors? : )
All I would like to know is if you would even consider this as an option.
1)Will the crew discover any cryptic messages this season pertaining to their survival?
2)Will any other interesting things be found hidden amidst the Replicator base code?
I'm so happy Atlantis got renewed, I had a thought it would, and I'm sure you'll be able to come up with 20 epic episodes. 1 question though, why the hatred towards kiwis? It's not like they can leave the ground and peck your eyes out, they're just fluffy little balls that run around making bizarre noises.
Unless you're talking about the food in which case I so agree with you, I cannot stand them
Congrats again
Maggie -- Best wishes to you and your family.
Joe -- hope all goes well with your tests.
As for S5 -- congratulations!
Please DO NOT bring back Weir. She is extremely bland and boring, and I'm glad she's gone! Love Carter, though! Carter is a much more logical and interesting choice as leader of Atlantis.
Season 5 wishes:
More background on the Wraith (and more Michael).
More on Atlantis itself.
AU or time travel episode.
More Lorne and Zelenka!
Less Keller - or let her go completely.
No Lucius!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Great news! Ok, so no ceiling thumping for now, although I could have used the exercise.
@Maggie: I send tons of positive vibes from across the pond. I tried to contact you privately (wanted to email you a picture) but failed miserably in figuring (sp?)out your email addy.
@Joe
congratulations for the renewal. I had a feeling when I pre-ordered the 10th season of SG-1 and the 3rd of Atlantis yesterday night prior to reading your blog.
Finally went from anonymous to having a name. Yeah - go me. LOL
I have a question Joe. Originally Michael's name was going to be Charlie, but for some reason it was changed. I thought maybe it was changed because Jack's son was named Charlie so you guys decided to change it to Michael. I know it was probably Brad or Rob, but was curious if you knew why it was changed?
Yay for Atlantis S5!! *is very excited* Is there any chance S5 could contain a trio of leading ladies...? Sam, Elizabeth and Teyla would surely be a winning combination - not to mention one that'd keep the guys on their toes! Mwhahaha *ahem*
Season 5! Whoooo Hooooooo! You GO Boys and Girls!
Tomorrow is Friday, 'Gate day!
smile, grin, chuckle!!!...
I was thrilled to find out that SGA was renewed. I see you've already been bombarded with requests to bring all SG1 characters to SGA. PLEASE DON'T! If SG1 fans are so desperate for the show, they have 200-plus shows to watch in re-runs on TV almost every night or on DVD. They also have two upcoming movies to anticipate. I've been a fan of SGA from its beginning, and I was not all that happy about losing Weir and Beckett and getting Carter and Keller in exchange, largely because I have seen no appreciable change for the better: Despite 10 years of character development, Carter remains wooden and aloof; and Keller looks to be the most recent graduate from the Doogie Howser School of Medicine. Enough already. I want to learn more about the characters who make up SGA!
You're 5'10", 160 lbs, eat well, don't smoke and exercise pretty much every day? I don't think you've got anything to worry about with those blood tests, Joe.
I'm 5'/185 lbs, and devour extra creamy Kraft Dinner, donuts and chocolate cake on an almost daily basis. According to my doctor I aint doing so hot.

PS: Congrats on the news about Atlantis. Back to work, slaves!
Congrats on the renewal of Atlantis for seasson 5 from a viewer in norway. Hope it will be good as the previous seasons.
I read that your reading the Dark Tower series. I'm currently on book five and like the story. I was sceptical at first to buy the first book. After a while I found a two in one book and desided to try it. Glad i did.
Firstly congratulations on the season 5 renewal!
I've been following along with the bookclub (silently) and I'd like to place my vote for the next books.
Fantasy: Roger Silverberg’s Lord Valentine’s Castle
Sci-fi: Frank Herbert’s The White Plague.
Thanks!
Jeni
Maggie - positive energy and prayers for healing. I hope the best for your mother, you, and your family. - kj
HURRAH! Nice going MGM & SciFi! Atlantis is good to go for a FIFTH season - that news just made my day! Fabulous series, creatively written, acted & directed. CONGRATULATIONS to all!
Currently enjoying a great S4 and my recent purchase of S3 on DVD. Only wonder why no actor commentary on S3 DVD set Joe?
Salut joseph <3

At last it's official! YES!!
Excuse me whilst I go dance and scream in the streets. If I'm not back tomorrow, it's likely I've been arrested for disturbing the peace.
haha!!! i would have done that if my fellow atlantis-obsessed friend wasnt in china... grr... :)
and maggie... listen to sues- she posted a really good verse to remember- and i will be praying for you and all the others who have cancer and know people with cancer... i just found out my grandfather has lung cancer, so i guess its something a lot of people can relate to.
hey all,
there was a hilarious Stargate SG-1 parody on South Park this week.
Hi, is there any chance of seeing Ford in season 5???
CONGRATS on the season 5 pickup!!!
And while I understand how the sight of that big, blank whiteboard - minus the four "titles" you have thus far, of course - can seem rather daunting to you at this point, I still got the biggest thrill out of seeing that picture in your blog today. Oooh, the potential of great stories yet to come. : )
*waves*
PG15 who has finally lost the plot has said...
Oh, and Joe, congrats again on that 5th season! I didn't post this last night because I was late for bed, but here it is:
They are HAPPY!!
...for the Season 5 renewal, that is."
PG15!! *shakes head and sends in the men in white coats*
I'm sorry it has to come to this, hon, but you've gone too far now!
Oh dear.
So now Mr M onto Cheky's wish list. I'm not going to be greedy, so here's my top 5!
1. Shep shirtless (but i'm willing to let this go if we get a scene in season 4) Although to be honest I quite like Dovil's wish list of every 3rd ep the boys should go shirtless. Well, we wouldn't want them feeling left out now, would we? :D
2. Shep in speedo's! What can I say, i'm shallow, and you've really got to start thinking of those ratings!
3. Shep in the shower. But you have to make him all hot, sweaty and dirty for my good friend anon. I miss her *sniff*
4. Shep shot with real bullets (not stunned) and not in the left arm. :P And by real, I mean imaginary real...
5. Shep whumped to oblivion, nekkid whilst under the infirmary blanket and of course the ultimate whumpage - Intubated! Can I also be extremely greedy and ask for more with more tummy peakage, please! :P
And I know I said I was only going to do 5, but this is a special request. MORE EVIL SHEP! So that I can squeeeeee. Sorry, that slipped out. It's seeing the new Travelers promo, it's got me very exciteable again. :D
Thank you Mr M, as always you're a very wise and kind man.
*fingers crossed for the test results*
*hugs*
My votes are for:
Lord Valentine's Castle and The White Plague.
Joe,
Hate to start another cast change debate, because really...I'm liking both Keller and Carter...
But I noticed we've had a new gate tech lately. What happened to Chuck?
I miss Chuck...
WannaBe
Yippee! and congrats.
Book Club stuff:
Dark Tower: meh
Lord Valentine: pretty good
Doomsday Book: Dark Dark Good
White Plague: Dark Scare you out of your wits Fantastic.
Congrats on the Season 5 pickup - the first 4 eps this season have been fantastic so you clearly deserve it.
My vote for the sci-fi book would be Frank Herbert's The White Plague, which sounds so intriguing that it's going in my Amazon basket anyway. For fantasy I'd vote for Stephen King's Dark Tower Book One. The other one sounds boring, which may be completely untrue, but the summary is. And every fanfic writer/reader out there knows the importance of a good summary! This'll be my first Stephen King if it wins the vote. I hate horror and would normally avoid him like the plague, no matter what genre he's writing.
Still very excited for a season 5 and giddy we have tons of season 4 still to look forward to!
Here's a wish list for season 5, you know food for thought. Lol
1.Still would love a plot where having the natural ancient gene backfires in some way.
2.More Ronon!
3.Bring Koyla back without Lucius.
4.A pure John and Ronon action episode
5.More evil, back stabbing Genii
6.The Wraith Home world
7.More unusual locations, not jungle, but maybe desert or ice environments
8.If the Flan wants to direct, have his storyline reflect less screen time.
9.More fights, space battles
10.A more overall story arc for Sheppard over the season
I send a big, big hug to all of you, the renew of the show are really a great news for us too. here a question a little bit retarded:
again, what reason gave j. Flanigan for not wanting to take his shirt off for the defibrillating scene?? at Doppelganger?
Joe,
Here are my choices for next months BOTM
In the fantasy category, I vote
Stephen King's Dark Tower Book One (The Gunslinger)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
In the Science fiction category,
Frank Herbert's The White Plague (this was a tough one, I had to flip a coin) ; p
Side note regarding the So Ca fire... Thank you Joe (and alipeeps and janie)for your kind thoughts. I am home again. All's well but it still seems the finger of God comes down and touches those homes that are saved. Mine and a neighbor across the street were the only 2 homes (out of 8 on my block)that were left untouched.
If I didn't know better, I would say... Now THAT'S science fiction.
~Donna
Yay! and congrats on Season 5!!!
Season 4 rocks and I can't wait for 5.
Thanks for all the hard work and creativity you all poor into this series.
You are the best!
Much love and I am sure your tests will be fine. :)
Sending more positive thoughts for Maggie and her family ...
And sending some for blood tests, too.
Let's see, today lunch was served with a small addition that had legs.
Today I sat through a two-hour whine-fest that passed for a meeting.
Today I forgot my jump stick, and when I went to upload a 55-page project to my server, I clicked download instead, due to distractions and other excuses that thinly disguise lack of full brain function. And then I clicked "save" and "yes" and wrote over my updated project with its older version.
So why am I grinning?
Season five, yes!
Congrats to you and the team.
Well-deserved.
Hey, Mr. M -- have been watching your book reading but haven't ('til now) commented. Please do choose Connie Willis over Herbert! (If you want better feminist stories, seek out early Sherri Tepper, such as *The Gate to Women's Country* or *Grass*.) And while King is good, Silverberg will always win out for me. The Valentine stories are wonderful. You also might give thought to reading Jonathan Carroll (if you haven't already) - the absolute best magic realist out there.
Congratulations on the fifth season pickup! I know I (and my friends) were tickled! As for the stories, any chance you'll allow fen to pitch for the season? There are some terrific wordsmiths out here in the wilds.
Hope everything on the health side remains good and keep the fun stuff coming!
It's your wife's fault for buying such a complex washing machine. My washing machine just has 2 dials, one for the water temperature and one for the type of wash.
Granted, the machine destroys many of my sweaters and I think it eats left socks... but its WAY less complicated.
But enough of that, on a more important note, I am throwing a french dinner party for my parents. I plan on serving chocolate fondue for dessert. Any recommendations on what brand of chocolate to use? (Dark chocolate preferred)
Maggie you and your family are in my prayers.You have all my vibes
Great news to hear that Atlantis has been renewed! Like many I was sceptical about how well the show would fare without Dr Weir and Dr Beckett, but so far I've been pleasantly surprised (although the death of Kate in "Doppelganger" makes we wonder who's going to be left by the end of the season!).
One question though - were you surprised by the reactions to the death/removal of these characters? Any thoughts on bringing either of them back (as guest stars) in season 5?
Michael
