October 28, 2007

What a week. First, we receive news that Atlantis has been picked up for a fifth season. Then, I get my test results back - everything is normal. Finally, my Melvinskidnappers@yahoo.com account received the following email:

“We are please to inform you of the announcement today of the QUEEN ELIZABETH International Poverty Alleviation Grant Scheme held on 26th October 2007. this Grant is given out to selected individuals around the world to help them actualise their dreams and also make the world a better place for all….”

How cool is that. Elated, Mr. Kidnapper wrote back:

“I am thrilled beyond words to receive news that all of our hard work has finally been recognized. Ours is undoubtedly one of the world’s most storied professions and yet, for all of its rich history, the business of kidnapping is not without its challenges. To be honest, there were times when we struggled, when we considered simply giving it all up in favor of more traditional pursuits such as armed robbery, carjacking, and online fraud, but, instead, we remained committed and, in the end, persevered.

This much-deserved award would not have been possible were it not for those who planned, ambushed, pistol-whipped, and showed immeasurable patience in striving to be the best possible kidnappers they could be. And so, I would like to take this opportunity to thank individuals like Jimmy Jones (aka Johnny James, aka Jacky Jakes, aka Lady Beatrice Rivera the third) who spent many a late night surfing the net, watching celebrity news, and browsing back-issues of Paris Match to find us the best possible targets; the Kato brothers who have always demonstrated unbridled enthusiasm in the fulfillment of their duties be it rolling a struggling socialite into her Persian rug or tossing a hysterical European ambassador out of a speeding car; Roderick “No Nose” Carpaccio whose skills as a getaway driver are surpassed only by his talent for tap; and the lovely Isadora - my co-conspirator and partner in love. Special mention should also be made of the late Ricky “Ears” Montezuma who once gave this young up-and-coming kidnapper his first break in a very competitive field. And, of course, the many, many, many victims who made it all possible.

We anxiously await our 500 000 pounds and commemorative plaque.

Sincerely,

Mr. Kidnapper”

Meanwhile, Baron Destructo found not one but two new emails sitting in his inbox this weekend. The first, was from a Mr. Aboud Diallo who contacted the Baron with regard to some exciting business proposal. Hmmm. On the surface, it certainly looked promising, but Baron Destructo has been remarkably wary of late. He wrote back:

“Dear Mr. Aboud Diallo (if that is your real name),

I hope you will excuse my reticence to take you at your word but recent actions on the part of my enemies has caused me to adopt a more cautious approach to the various business dealings that come my way. Specifically, I refer to the recent attempts by Captain Spectacular and his Confederacy of Justice to entrap me and my associates. It may, perhaps, be mere coincidence that your name, Mr. Aboud Diallo, is actually an anagram from Llama D. Boudoir, the not-so-secret identity of one Major Funksonic. Still, I would prefer to err on the side of caution and ask you to answer a few questions to confirm your identity.

1. Are you or are your present employers possessed of any superhuman abilities (as a result of anything from genetic manipulation to magically-imbued cod-pieces)?

2. Are you or have you ever worked for any of the following law enforcement agencies: Interpol, the F.B.I, the C.I.A., L.A.W., T.R.E.W.T.H., S.P.H.I.N.C.T.E.R.?

3. Could you provide a witness (non-family member) willing to attest to your true identity. If so, would he/she be willing to provide a written deposition to that effect? If not, would they be willing to take part in a one act three-player improv entitled “That’s My Mr. Aboud Diallo”?

Once I have received your responses to the preceding questions, I will be happy to join you in moving forward on your proposal.

Sincerely,

Baron Destructo

The other email was from a Mariam Aslam who asked for the Baron’s help in moving $18.5 million dollars out of a bank account Abidjan so that she could meet Baron Destructo and continue her education. Well, what an opportunity! The Baron responded:

“If you are seeking to further your education, then your timing is impeccable because we at the League of Aliens and Mutants for Evil are in process of auditioning for The Next Great Supervillain! We are seeking someone who is motivated and maniacal, yet brilliant and just a tad loopy to join our society of Monsters, Megalomaniacs, and Mercenaries. To those of you asking - yes, Jason did cut his hair. The dreads were becoming a bit of a pain and he asked us if he could go ahead and lose them. Paul and I wanted to accommodate him but were a little concerned given that the first episode of season 5 will pretty much pick up events as we leave them in the final episode of season 4, and we figured the fans might notice the not-so-subtle change in hairstyle. Well, after getting on the phone with Jason’s hair expert (no kidding), we arrived at a solution. Jason could lose the dreads provided he held on to them. A couple of weeks prior to the start of principal photography for season five, they would be reattached in a procedure that would take approximately four hours, and he would have them back for premiere. Thus, Jason is happy and continuity is maintained. As for the ultimate fate of those dreads - that, among many other things, is up for discussion this week.

Finally, to those of you who are including email addresses in your comments (as a rule, I do not make these public so if you want your comment to be made public, don’t include an email address), or sending me “Please do not approve” comments, I’m happy to keep them private and I do read them, but if you’re expecting a personal response, you might have to wait a while as I’ll have my hands with season five story ideas for the foreseeable future.

BTW - The winners of the next Joe’s BOTM will be announced tomorrow. The polls close at midnight tonight but it looks like it’s going to be The Gunslinger and The White Plague.

Hm, do you realise that Carter's absence in "Travellers" really didn't make a strong case for her being a "better, more involved" leader than Weir?

In fact, i think it rather played more to the contrary.

One of the reasons I like your blog is your wonderful descriptions of your meals - despite the fact I am not a "foodie". They tend to be melodic even when describing some pretty adventuresome choices.

Tonight we get:

Today’s pics: Hey, lookit! We actually made dinner last night!

Now, you have turned cryptic.

I have a pretty good guess on what the first dish is, but the second two dishes are a mystery to me. And what was for dessert?

Poor writers and JF. Of course, one concept will make a bunch of people happy, and others will be overly pissed about it. Interesting. Well, I loved Travelers and thought Joe F did amazing and the episode was well-written.

And I must say, I'm extremely excited about Tabula Rasa. It looks like a pyschological thriller which I've always found amazingly inteligent. And I saw someone getting stunned... mmm Shep whump.

Anyways... I always watch at 9 on Fridays, but I unfortunately missed the first airing, but watched the one that came on a 12 Friday/Saturday. Are those counted as well?

Well, this season is proving to be excellent, which is a real compliment to the writers, and even the actors because there were quite a few major changes on the show this season, and very few people react well to change. So, for going up with that, you are all doing so excellent. Keep it up next season and send on some Shep whump.... mmmm.. haha kidding, but that would be nice.

Does JoeF think its odd that there's a bunch of people who want him covered in blood and in pain?
Teehee..

Nighty night, Joe.

Elizabeth wouldn't have played the kiss trick with Kolya. She has a little more than her good looks and charm to use as a weapon. She actually has a brain that doesn't just think below the belt.

Yet another reason why Atlantis needs her, and needs Torri.

The questions are bsck!

1. Does Atlantis have 2 ZPMs now? One that we already had (but heavily drained) and the new one from the Replicator Homeworld? Does this development play any major roles in Season 4?

2. The 6th episode of the 5th Season of Atlantis will be the 300th episode of the Stargate franchise. Do you think you guys will be doing anything special for it?

Anonymous said...

On the GW forum, there are already anti season 5 threads. That makes absolutely no sense to me, for various reasons.

Anyway, you made a pretty dinner!

As I was posting this question, you updated the blog, so I'll re-post:

I'm confused by all the questions about the Tria. I thought I saw/read/heard that the Replicators have it, having learned of it's existence and position from Helia's mind probe. I don't read fan-fiction, so I couldn't have gotten that idea from there. Perhaps I just assumed it? Can you confirm?

Okay so I can admit when I’ve made a mistake, and I admit I have made a big one.

I watched the Sopranos, not that bad you may think.

But I have to tell you, I have never ever watched a single episode of the Sopranos before in my life.

But I did tonight, the last ever episode, ‘Made in America’.

And only because I read this blog, and you enthused over it so much.

Most of it was hard to grasp not knowing the past history, but I got by.

Tony, what a character, what an actor.

The scene when he was talking to his dad in the hospital/home. Just one look conveyed so much, and the sparse dialogue added to it.

A blank screen what…what was that!! Loved the ending.

Oh my god I envy you, 20 episodes to come up with and a whole Galaxy to play with.
And remember you can’t please all of the people all of the time, and when it comes to the shippers, you can’t please any of them!!! (Just kidding)

Reading the knee-jerk reactions against Sheppard giving in to a bit of old-fashioned mutual attraction for 10 seconds, I'm left to wonder if some Stargate fans are living in a special super-moral alternate universe where all impulses must be quashed like the Evil they are before we Burn in Hell. I was totally with Shep in that scene, cheering him on!

On that note, some Ark of Truth publicity photos are out, and there's no sign of Vala in the team or individual shots so far. This on top of no Vala on the S10 box set. I truly, truly hope Vala will not be written out of future movies because uptight fans find her too... whatever, and MGM gives in. I think her character was a godsend to S9 and S10.

Just had to throw that in there... very happy to hear Daniel might visit Atlantis in S5!

Everyone is entitled to their opinion... so here's mine... :-) I actually did miss Carter in Travelers. I thought it was odd that her 2IC was missing in action and that she wasn't weighing in on the situation at all.

Also I'm curious. I've heard Bionic Woman shoots in Vancover (I'm pretty sure I've seen several locations from Stargate used). Do they shoot out of Bridge Studios or elsewhere?

Heeeee! Best awards speech ever.

I think there should be an episode next season devoted to the passing on of JM's dreads, they're just such an integral part of the cast, and if rumours are true, have their own paycheck and trailer. They will be missed.

There could be angst, there could be humour, there could be hugst! A sheep sharing contest gone horribly wrong, an accident with a large industrial fan that leaves him wailing and crying out to the sky as orchestral music swells, they could become sentient - dragging him along in his sleep as they seek victims to strangle leading down to a nail biting show down. My god, this could not just be an episode but A TELEVISION EVENT!

Or Teyla could just get miffed and stick fight his hair off. What ever.

I liked the episode. I loved how Shepp floored the ship and toppled the Travelers, oh yeah! It was great to see him turn the tables on them and trap Larrin in the chair room and corridors. Loved the chair scene where Shepp used his smarts to fix the chair...it's nice to see that. LOVED the shots of the drones totally annihilating the Wraith ship! That was just beautiful to look at!

Not real sold on Larrin...I thought Shepp shouldn't have let her hit him that many times(he didn't have to hit back, but 3 times in a row..really?) She seems a bit hardened...guess that's what the writers were going for. Didn't like how she radiated her buddies as well as Shepp, and she didn't seem to be too upset about their deaths. She was alone when she found out...even if she wanted to seem tough to Shepp, she could've taken a moment to grieve.
I liked that she was the leader and could kick butt..lol. Not a namby-pamby girl that screams a lot and needs to be taken care of. I couldn't believe Shepp got taken in by her, and shot at the end and yet I was also surprised when she did that...lol! He was just too sweet this episode.(I'm not sure if that is a compliment or complaint...I love a sweet guy, but getting hit 3 times was just too much...I wanted to sock her one!) He wasn't really Kirkish as Kirk wouldn't have been taken in by her, and probably would have punched or smacked her back! (I like Shepp better than Kirk! He is truly a nice guy...not just a man tramp for babes)
Anyway...overall I liked the show...just a few complaints...sorry! I really love Doppelganger so it was a tough show to follow!

When sitting down to plan out a future season, do you usually have deadline goals for different stages of script development?

Like, "We just started talking about season X and we want to split up the season and have initial pitch ideas within X weeks."

Based on your previous posts this year, it seems like things move pretty fast once the winter is over.

*swallows hard and bites back tears*

So...Jason's going to have...short hair? Just like everyone else?

Clever way to solve the 5x01 continuity problem and the dreads were getting awfully long...but, still, I get kinda sad picturing Jason without his signature hair.

I'm glad that Joe F. enjoyed working on "Travelers." It's not my fave episode so far, but, then again, they can't all be. As an introduction to the Traveler race, it was functional enough. Next week's fare sounds absolutely awesome. I'm really looking forward to it!

A sheep sharing contest gone horribly wrong,

Damn my illiteracy turning sheep shearing into something universally illegal except in Wales.

And since I'm making the awful double post I just wanted to add that I loved the opening scene in Travellers with Planet McSlutneasy where Sheppard is all "Oh, pick me! Pick me!" for the supply run. Also RL's eye roll at the end deserves an Emmy at the very least.

And last...I've had to change my routine and have MY dinner first before reading your blog. If I read your blog first, I'm disappointed the rest of the evening by my lack of culinary skills.

Would you rather that she appear for the 2 seconds it would take to send out a rescue mission? Or to have gone on the mission herself? She obviously still has a base to run, and we know that Tapping was contracted for only 14 episodes. I'm assuming they wouldn't use one of those up for a mission she felt her team could handle. Part of being a good leader is letting your people do their jobs.

I loved this episode. I thought it was extremely well-written and very funny. I especially loved when they opened the bay doors and left Sheppard standing on a forcefield--an original use of FF in sci-fi! Hooray!

Two questions (and none brief, because I do not do brief as I do not do perky):

1) Will there be an exploration of alien civilizations in future s4, if not s5? In SG1, especially in the early seasons (my favorite), there was an exploration of cultures both alien and earth-borne - and not in a monster-of-the-week fashion. ie, the cultures were explored in addition to the threat/advantage they posed to SG1. So far in SGA, it appears to be dominated by 2 variations of the same theme - rural agrarian, advanced militaristic. The Wraith seem to be the exception so far, being a hive structure, but even then their actual culture has only been briefly touched upon.

2) Will the actual international aspect of the expedition be explored? There are many nationalities/cultures under one roof - a very unique social study opportunity. it would really be interesting to see how people in high-stress, life-or-death situations respond/interact with different cultures, different religions, different values. So far, we really only see a US military POV and a traditional Western culture POV in response to anything, be it superheroes or beliefs of death.

SGA seems like such an opportunity to explore differences in values, ideas and notions contrary to what one believes 'normal' (read: taboo) given the international aspect as well as being in an entirely different galaxy where beings have lived under a completely different set of rules. this is one freedom i love about science fiction in general, and would love to see it echoed in SGA.

'The Last Man' discussion:

The mid-season, apparant 3 parter... on gateworld says we will see featured both the Daedalus, Apollo, and at least 7 Wraith Hive Ships!? On your blog, the 'Phoenix' is mentioned for the first time anywhere, which seems to be in the Season finale. Is this just a new ship to Earth's 'armada', or is it put into commission as a result from major events in the mid-season episodes??

Basically, why is the 'Phoenix' needed for the Season finale? Any hints for its purpose?

Hi Joe,

This is my first time posting, but I've enjoyed reading your blog for a while now.

I just wanted to say that while I did enjoy JF's acting in Travelers, I wasn't too impressed with the execution of the Travelers as a new Pegasus culture.

I thought the concept of roving 'space gypsies' was pretty neat, but the casting of the actors and the sets for their ship were just kind of generic and didn't give me any sense of who they were. If overcrowding was such a problem, couldn't there have been just a passing shot of families w/kids, their belongings, etc? And a few cultural quirks from generations spent in space might have helped to 'sell' the concept.

Also, I understand that the plot called for a certain dynamic between Shep and Larrin (sp?), but the actress seemed woefully lacking in the sort of charisma/gravitas that would make it believable to have a pretty-faced twentysomething as the 'leader of her people'.

I wouldn't nit-pick an otherwise entertaining episode, but since these Travelers are apparently going to be featured again, I thought I'd voice my hopes that they'll be a little more fleshed out in the future, if the viewers are meant to take them seriously.

In any case, season 4 has been excellent so far and next week's ep Tabula Rasa looks to be amazing. Thanks and congratulations on the season 5 pickup!

Um, first, Kolya's dead, and second wouldn't that be a bit out of character, she's a diplomat, does she even know how to fire a gun? Just because Princess Leia was an expert marksman it doesn't mean that most diplomats are (look at Woolsey!).

Please answer my question. 1) Could you have the writer of Trio do an episode dissection? You know, like Mr. Cooper did for Doppelganger? Please?

I was wondering, how did you decide to which episodes use/not use Carter/Amanda Tapping?

Was it part of the contract that she would appear in episodes 1-4 but not 5, (insert other episode number here). I have read that the agreed upon number was 14, but I was wondering how those 14 episodes were picked. Was it based on the story or on AT schedule for the SG-1 films, her other projects or were there other considerations?

'Travelers' was a great episode with one exception: Why'd ya have to go and give the bitchy alien slut her life back? I'd quite enjoyed watching Mr. Wraith have her as a tasty snack. Seriously though, the 'giving back what the Wraith took' thing needs to stop; it takes all the peril out of being eaten by the Wraith if all you gotta do is put a gun to their head and make them give it all back. Oh, one other thing: both me and my Mom loved the fact that each of the Wraiths were rocking their own look. We like a good variety in our evil alien dudes!

I have three requests for season five: One, pets! They need pets! In at least ten of the episodes! Dogs, cats, fish, turtles, space lizards, and HEDGEHOGS! Especially the hedgehogs! That way they could open a local Petco! Two, Beckett! Bring Beckett back, at least for a few episodes! Keller's fine and all, but she doesn't have a Scottish accent! An accent is absolutely essential for doctors! And third, have someone get poison oak! Like the space version! Also please have Jack O'Neill in at least three episodes! He could fly a puddle jumper! They would have a temporary extra pilot! That way they could stop making all the scientists fly the jumpers!

Um, that ended up being four requests. Ooops, sorry. What happens when an Asuran or Wraith is zatted? Thank you so much!

Also, why aren't there any places of worship [churches, synagogues, mosques, temples, etc.]? Are they all atheists?

I'd just like to say to Michelle that my household stopped watching Stargate when Vala sauntered her way through the gate in Avalon. I'll be the one who decides when my children need to be told what, not some TV show. SG-1 used to appeal to all of us, from my husband to my youngest daughter. The show gave us many wonderful times with our kids and the producers have my thanks and appreciation for that. But our viewership is not absolute, and with the addition of Vala TPTB lost it. I'm sure they and you really don't care, but I just wanted to let others out there who feel the same as I do know that they're not alone and to present an alternative viewpoint to yours.

So from the Wiln family to TPTB: When it comes to Vala, thanks but no thanks.

1. Chicken (or turkey? I never can tell)?

2. Beets? Ever had a baby beet top salad with beets, orange confit, and avocado?

3. Cucumber something-or-other? At first I thought it looked like some kind of potato hotdish (yep, I'm from Minnesota), but thought it unlikely you'd have potatoes in 2 of your dishes.

Your pictures look so yummy! I don't suppose you could give me the recipe for the chicken dish? Or point me towards it?

That was really the only dish I could identify for sure but I'm going to go with yasmin and say the next was beets and the last was raita.

Answers: 2)

Well, you've already said you'd love Keller and Carter to be in Season 5 so that means they can be left off this list.

Soooo, Shep, Ronan, Teyla, McKay, Zelenka could possibly be removed.

Looking at that list only Zelenka and Teyla are really replaceable.

If you ever get out of the writing/producing biz, you could most definitely become a food photographer. Man! I don't suppose we could get you to share some of your recipes? Perhaps a book of the cast and crew's favorite recipes to benefit a favorite charity? I would so buy a copy!

Also, I got a great laugh out of "Travelers", especially Sheppard meeting his female alter ego in the Gypsy Queen of the Pegasus Galaxy. My favorite part, though, was the affirmation that Lorne and Sheppard's team would literally go up against a fleet of hive ships in order to get him back. That gave me all kinds of glowy, warm fuzzies!

Secondly, have you ever read Anne McCaffrey's Crystal Singer books? I started them, very skeptical (I'm not the biggest fan of her books) but these a quite quite good and worth the read in my opinion!

Hey just watched Travellers. Season four is so good thus far. The only criticism I might make is that the team didn't really get to shine, Although having said that it was still a fantastic episode.

The Travellers, specifically Larrin are very cool. Will we get to see more on this front?

Also In season 1, (I think the seige part 1? The one with the ancient weapons satelitte), there was mention that Atlantis' weapons were meant to be powered by a ZPM... Since the drones were powered by a Naq. Generator, can i assume there are other weapons on Atlantis we haven't seen yet? If yes may we please :)?

Indeed. Some of the best episodes are those that tackle some kind of moral dilemma. Like whether the end justifies the means. Were the Hoffans justified in killing half their population in order to make themselves inedible (so to speak)for the Wraith? Or was Weir justified in disregarding the Geneva Convention in ordering Ronon to torture Kavanagh? Can't forget Michael either. Are we likely to see anything like this in season 4, Joe? Or possibly a hint from me for season 5?

Now see, I just watched Travellers and it was obvious from the start that it was gonna be a mills and boon episode. I mean come ON! sexy space tart commanding a ship? Are there no mature female commanders in space? Does Shepard have to snog them all? nope I have to admit it wasn't my favourite. Is Shepard REALLY so naive that he thinks his manly charms would change any woman's mind? I mean its ok for us cuz we know he would have helped them out had he been asked, i just think this whole "Kirking" thing has gone on long enough, time to find another joke.

So, Jason wants to lose the dreads. Is it like Tyr from Andromeda? If it is, then...

http://en.dcdatabaseproject.com/Lobo

No Jason Momoa for Lobo then? :( No Jason yelling, "I got one whole heap o' pent-up anger an' frustrated rage just a-beggin' fer a few friendly faces to frag!"?

I was kinda hoping. If I was casting, I would cast him if that project ever saw the light of day. ;)

Jason Momoa for Lobo (ie. He Who Devours Your Entrails And Thoroughly Enjoys It)!

I'm looking forward to seeing a very creative explanation for the change in hairstyle in Season 5. No pressure!

Hey Joe,

I'm curious. I saw Blade Trinity yesterday, and I know you use the soundstage of that movie. Now, what I like to know is, at the beginning of Blade Trinity, they are in a cave and there is a wall with signs on it, which looked a lot like the door in that ziggurat in the SG1 episode "The Tomb". Just a look-a-like or the same? And how much set sharing goes on in the business? For I have seen the corridors and more of the SGC in the show "Jeremiah".

Thank you :)

Well said. It seems to me that slashers and shippers don't generally like Sheppard having a kiss with a female guest character, because they're the one's who complain the most endlessly and the loudest, though, of course, that's not always the case. Sheppard looking at another woman, or GASP, kissing her, somehow insults them and threatens their slash/ship...okaaaaay.

I really enjoyed seeing Sheppard interact with Larrin, and physical attraction is a part of life, for goodness sake! Men and women are attracted to each other - it's not a crime! I honestly do think some folks are victorian!

In fact, i think it rather played more to the contrary."

Everyone is entitled to their opinion... so here's mine... :-) I actually did miss Carter in Travelers. I thought it was odd that her 2IC was missing in action and that she wasn't weighing in on the situation at all.

I agree. I understand why Carter wasn't in this episode, but, yes, I did miss the input of the leader of Atlantis here. Just a few lines from her would've been excellent, but I know AT was contracted for 14 episodes due to other filming commitments, so she had to be absent from some episodes.

Just catching up with your blog and good news about the test results.

Also have to say that I do love Baron Destructo and his motley crew. Now there's a pilot idea - not that you need one now SGA has been picked up!

I always find it interesting how there is sometimes a difference of opinion between the viewers and producers of a TV show on whether a storyline has completed or not.

I personally agree with those that don't feel Ford's storyline was completed; while it was unlikely he made it off the exploding hive ship, Shep's dialogue of 'I wouldn't be surprised if we saw him again someday' (or words to that effect) clearly left it open - hence why you have some fans going they would love to see Ford again and the storyline completed.

If Shep had said 'he died saving us', then I think many of those same fans would have mourned and moved on (although you would have got the odd one or two who desperately cling to the maxim that noone needs to stay dead in sci-fi).

I would personally love to see the loose end of Ford and his storyline tied up completely (whether a happy or sad ending) if Rainbow is available. And on the positive side, it would fill at least one of those blank spots on the white board...

I forgot to congratulate you on a fifth season! That gust of wind that blew through here that day must have been the collective release of breath from the producers, writers, cast, crew and fans of SGA with that good news.
I finally saw the pic of Jack in Doppleganger...it's in Sam's office now I believe? Or is that her dad in uniform?

Hi Mr M.,
Greetings from Tipperary again. I read with great interest your account of the Screening of Ark of Truth, and in particular the work of Joel Goldsmith. I for one am a huge JG fan, having purchased all of the SG Soundtracks (not that many!) I always consider the score to be an "extra" character. I look forward to the blank canvass a movie gives him for SG1. On that point, were there any TV program signature tunes that you really liked growing up? Living in Ireland, we got a staple diet of American and Canadian productions...So one of my all time favs would have to be "The Streets of San Francisco"!! On a similar vein, is there any one TV hero with whom you identified watching TV as a kid?

Thanks and delighted about your results....Chocolate, be afraid, be very afraid!!

Shirt'n'Tie

PS Duncan the Dalmation says "hi" and hopes the DOTS will make an appearance on Season 5(!)

Congrats on your bloodwork results! Now, go kiss your grandparents for passing on their amazing DNA.

I can't believe I am commenting on a guy's hair but the news of Jason Momoa cutting his dreads off is interesting, in that at DragonCon (Labor Day weekend, 2007), he stated that as an actor, he deliberately grew the dreads so that he could never be "cast as a f**king doctor or lawyer." Then, he turned to Paul McGillion, and said, "Sorry, man."

Thanks so much Joe for wanting to do a story for Daniel in season 5.
It's been several months since I posted on your blog (a rather lengthy post *g*) about how important I thought it was for Daniel to go to Atlantis, especially considering on SG1 it has been played as part of Daniel's character since "Rising".I remember you responding to my post in a very thoughtful way and said that Daniel visiting was very important to you too.

I don't think you'll have any problem at all coming up with a good reason for him to visit. I would think (besides Jack) Daniel would be the easiest to write a story for on Atlantis. And IMO you have always done a very good job with writing Daniel and have given me some of my favorite Daniel episodes. I guess what I'm trying to say is that I trust you and just wanted to thank you again.

Hi Mr. M,

Thank you for your response!

I'll admit it took me a bit to decide whether I liked Travelers, but the banter between Sheppard and Larrin finally won me over. I loved the scene in the control room where Sheppard is exasperated with Larrin's attempts at escape, and the scene in the closet was beautiful. Also nice to see smart!Sheppard return -- he's been kind of absent since The Storm/Eye.

Kudos to the writers for an excellent script, and to the actors for some fun moments. I think it's been said a few times, but it seems JF is really starting to understand his character this season, and it's fun to see him grow in the role. I look forward to seeing the other actors do the same!

Before I go back to lurking, I'd like to say that I'm also really enjoying the team moments this season -- the end of DG was great. And in Travelers, it's nice to see that Ronon's loyalties to his team remain in tact.

Thanks again,
Jenny

I'd just like to say to Michelle that my household stopped watching Stargate when Vala sauntered her way through the gate in Avalon.

Of course that's your right, but are you saying it was okay for your young daughter to watch people get killed by everything from staff weapon blasts to radiation burns to being shoved out airlocks, but not for a pretty woman to swing her hips a bit? A couple years ago I let my young nephew watch an early-season episode with me, and he had nightmares about the Jaffa. Won't do that again! I believe the show is rated TV13 and that's for a reason. The violence is way worse for the kiddies than Vala, whose antics go right over their heads. Just my opinion of course.

Stealth_Geek said...

That "and John Tesh" is just ... just perfect. Heh.

Enjoyed Travelers, buy why in SciFi do all strong female characters have to dress like space bimbos? Why? And it was refreshing to see Sheppard fix something for a change.

And just a quick question: Have you read anything by Dan Simmons? I highly recommend anything he's written. The man is amazing.

1) Will there be any "good vs evil" standoffs?

2) Will the very definition of evil be questioned this season?

Wow, never thought I'd see the day when Jason Momoa cut his dreads, but I know that after so long, you really have to do it as well, it's hard on the scalp. I think fans can now spend the next few months photoshopping different hairstyles onto Ronon.

Meanwhile, there is an excellent article on the looming writers strike at http://featuresblogs.chicagotribune.com/entertainment_tv/2007/10/a-scary-hallowe.html. I'm wondering what your take is, hypothetically if nothing else, on how this strike might adversely affect SGA's season five. Do the Canadians writers fall into a sympathy strike with the US writers?

You know, as a note, if Dex does shed the dreads permanently, and Jason doesn't want to keep them, you could probably make a bundle in auctioning them off for his favorite charity. Just a thought.

An observation on "Travelers." For a race that lives in ships, the ships don't look that lived in (unless they're a society of Monks - as in obsessive compulsive keep things neat kind of USA Network detective Monks). Do budgetary considerations come into play because we only got to see three people. I would have thought we'd see more people (as extras) in the background as more Travelers, even if they're military/guard types.

I was thrilled to learn that Travelers is one of JF's favorite episodes. He really did a great job as always. Perhaps when you sit down today to start planning S5 you would consider more such episodes where Sheppard is away from the team and forced to do all those things that he normally would be yelling at Rodney to hurry up and do.

You have a hero who very seldom gets an entire episode actually about him. Somehow when the whole team is involved and he has to play leader, he just doesn't get the focus that puts him in the forefront of the plot. You have an excellent actor who can do it all: action, humor, angst, snark and more. Please give us more of this guy.

And Larrin as sort of the Annabelle to Shep's Maverick. Think about it.

Since there're people that are asking again and again for this and that SG-1 character on SGA s5, I figured I had the right to ask the opposite. My wish for season 5: as little screentime for any SG-1 character as possible. Please, leave the SG-1 characters where they belong: SG-1 movies. It's season 5 of Stargate Atlantis not season 11 of SG-1. Thank you.
Or maybe TPTB could include John, Rodney, Ronon and Teyla in all the SG-1 movies and see if the SG-1 only fans like it...

michelle- well i'm not sure about sg-1, but atlantis is rated tv pg, not tv 14.

While watching some season one episodes today I wondered how the writers dealt with the techno-babble and how it's handled when laying out a plot since much of it becomes central to solving problems. Can you give us some insight in how this is handled?

Anonymous said...

Hi Joe!

Don't mean to vere off course with the flow of commentary today...so far S4 is fabulous and I'm ecstatic that S5 is now a done-deal! I have a question about Continuum, however...I know you've deferred on these in the past cuz it's not your project, but you have told us you've seen a cut of it. Given the loss of "that" scene from Trio, many of us are hanging our hat that we're going to have our curiosity on a certain matter satisfied in the movie. As someone who leans a little in that direction, do you think we'll be happy campers when we watch Continuum or might we still be waiting for that S5 give-away? Really...we'd rather know now if there's nothing in the movie than to get our hopes up only to have them dashed....

(Don't worry...I'll still buy the DVD...just hoping, you know?)

I doubt you'll see this question before tonight's blog, but what the hey:

I originally thought that Tabula Rasa was a Ronon/Teyla centric episode. Recently it seems, though, as if it is all Mckay centered. So my question is, who is more central to the story? Would you say it's a Mckay episode or a Teyla/Ronon piece? And please don't use the "team episode" moniker. Thanks.

Connie

PS I always enjoy your blogs, so thanks for them, too!

I don't know why someone above stated that there are torrents available for Tabula Rasa already. A very simple search for torrents on all major torrent sites, as well as usenext and IRC channels will show you there aren't any out for public download. Not as of this date/time at least.

To add a voice from the other side, please don't include the Larrin character in season five. She was about as flat and cliche as the other alien bimbos that have been introduced. Why can't just one female alien other than Teyla NOT be a sex bimbo? If you alter her character so she's actually a serious ally, then it would be okay to see more of her from time to time like we've seen with the Genii or other ally/foe races. Other than that, no thank you.
