To be honest, I was kind of half-hoping the doctor would have prescribed me a black eye patch to along with the eye drops and antibiotics. Damn. It would’ve gone perfectly with my new morning coat and that silver cobra head walking stick with the concealed poisoned rapier I’ve been saving for a special occasion. Oh well. Looks like I’m stuck walking around like just some other guy with a fiberglass-induced eye infection.
Hey, it’s nice to see so much positive buzz about last night’s episode, Tabula Rasa. Like I said in an earlier blog entry, it was one of my favorites of the first half. Alan McCullough is in Tokyo at the moment otherwise I’m sure he’d be dropping by to do his own Q&A. But since he’s not here, allow me to say a few things about how this one came about. It started, of course, with Alan who came up with the idea to do an episode in which Atlantis is infected by spores, the combination result of its trip through space and its new environment. We went back and forth on how the infection would manifest itself and I suggested amnesia. Alan went away to think about it and, when he came back, pitched out a fantastic tease: McKay awakens, cuffed to his chair, and finds a message awaiting him - a recording in which he instructs himself to find Teyla - or else. We loved it. The writers sat down and, working off the template Alan had put together, broke the story into scenes, choosing to tell this particular story in a non-linear way. Alan wrote the first couple of drafts, Paul did his pass (adding, among other things, his take on the Ronon-Sheppard confrontation), and then it went into prep. That was when director Martin Wood suggested the two distinct looks to help the audience differentiate between past and present. Although it was done to help clarify the episode’s atypical narrative, it also went along way toward establishing a somewhat bizarre tone for the whole - which was Martin’s aim as well. At one point, we considered adding chyrons (ie. “14 HOUR EARLIER”, “12 HOURS LATER“) but, ultimately, decided the episode didn’t need them. And from comments I’ve read to this point, it looks like we made the right call. So, what did you all think? Were you confused at any point during the episode?
This was also the episode of the zillion walk-ons, all radio personalities from all over the U.S., almost all of them featured in the cafeteria scene where McKay and Carter rally the troops. This episode was also notable for another special guest star, one Zach Selwyn, the host of Attack of the Show, who impressed in his role as Scientist #2.
Well, Halloween has come and gone but the memories remain - specifically, I refer to the whack of pictures my sister sent me documenting her Halloween haunt. Scarecrows and skeletons and undead and dismembered limbs. It seems like a lot of work to go through for the pleasure of scaring the beejeebers out of a bunch of kids. I save myself the time and effort by simply waiting until the trick-or-treaters approach the door and then suddenly whip around the corner, loosening a torrent of expletives and waving a broken bottle of Jack Daniels. It’s a move guaranteed to frighten the crap out of even the most jaded teenagers. And their parents!

I like your Halloween tricks. I had a coach in college who would dress like a scarecrow and pretend to sleep in a chair on his front porch. Whenever trick or treaters came to his door, he would suddenly "come alive" and scare the crap out of the kids. Just a suggestion for next year.
The puking pumpkin was hysterical. I might have to try that one next year.
I agree with you 100% on "Tabla Rasa." It's been my favorite so far as well. The cinematography was gorgeous and it was just a plain fun story.
Now the episode I most looking forward to is "Trio" after seeing some snipets on scifi.com. "Missing" looks pretty darn good, though. Can't wait to see some character development there for both Teyla and Keller...
I loved the episode.
The opening was brilliant, I thought. With scared sweaty McKay telling himself what to do just really set the tone for the rest of the episode.
I really liked McKay writing on himself to help him remember. Loved seeing Zelenka walking around with a metal rod of sorts and that he kept giving the military the slip. Lorne was awesome.
The look of it just really added to the feel. There was no confusion on my part unless you want to count the polaroid. Who brought a polaroid camera to the Pegasus galaxy? :)
For Tabula Rasa, let's guess....
Were the influences/inspiration behind the storyline linked to Memento and Plato's Allegory of the Cave, by any chance?
Hi Joe I enjoyed TR very much. Saying that I would have liked the crew to try and work out who was the scientist and who the warrior amongst them.
The idea of Rodney flexing his muscles thinking he was a soldier, and may be Ronnan trying to be cerebral is rather appealing.
Then the two factions having to come together to work out the cure to the virus.
My son has short tem memory loss and I know how frustrating it can be from his point of view and mine.
The only thing his Doctors could come up with was for him to record everything he would need to remember on a dictaphone.
Perhaps the dead give away for them was when I rolled my eyes at the suggestion much to their consternation.
But we did as they asked and when my son and I went back to see them they asked how the experiment had gone. “Fine for the first ten minutes” I replied “but then he put it down somewhere and can’t remember where he put it!!
Doctors about as much use as a chocolate teapot.

Any reason you talked about Tabula Rasa this week in your write-up and the only time you mentioned Travelers was when answering the mailbag? Were you disappointed with a lot of the negative reaction to it and that is why you really haven't talked about it?
As an Australian, I have never celebrated Halloween in any way shape or form, nor do I know anyone who does/has. Going by all the Halloween eps on various American/Canadian TV shows, I gather it's a huge deal over there so I was wondering... Why do you celebrate it? Just for the fun of a good horror night and the chance to dress up and scare the "beejeebers" out of a bunch of little s...kids? (An honorable past time in my opinion!). Just a recurring thought of mine, as most of the people I know consider it an "American thing" and "why should we celebrate something just coz they do?!" (I do know it is an ancient Pagan ritual..)
As for Tabula Rasa - really wish I could watch it because it sounds fantastic! I'll have to wait for the DVD's to come out (coz its highly unlikely that it will show on TV anytime soon... maybe in a couple of years?) I've been reading the Transcripts for each ep as they come available - and while it is in no way as enjoyable as watching the real thing, I can at least get what you are talking about and I don't like to miss one of your entries coz they are always entertaining!!
Cheers!

I absolutely loved "Tabula Rasa". I was not confusing at all. The only part I wondered about was McKay. It seemed that the loss of memory somehow developed a change in his personality from the bold, brazen McKay we all know and love. Would memory loss do that? Not really sure. However, it was a very interesting side of McKay to be revealed. I also loved the Ronon/Shepard side of the episode. Well done!
The writers sat down and, working off the template Alan had put together, broke the story into scenes, choosing to tell this particular story in a non-linear way. Alan wrote the first couple of drafts, Paul did his pass (adding, among other things, his take on the Ronon-Sheppard confrontation).
Tell Paul thanks for his take on the Ronon and Sheppard confrontation, one of my favorite scenes of the eppy.
I love Rodney and John, but Ronon and Sheppard have a lot of cool chemistry between their dynamic.
And I never was confused by the back and forth, loved the look of TR. Season 4 has rocked so far!
At one point, we considered adding chyrons (ie. “14 HOUR EARLIER”, “12 HOURS LATER“) but, ultimately, decided the episode didn’t need them.
Yes, thank you. I could've done without those that the episode did have, honestly. When they come on the screen there's always this moment of, "Wow, did TPTB really think we're so stupid that we couldn't figure out that we've switched back to the other timeline?". Distracts me from the show momentarily. I would've been pulling my hair out if they'd appeared throughout the ep.
Not to complain, though, because so much awesomeness in this episode. There's nothing better than an ep in which so many characters play a role in the plot and get decent screentime. And pretty, pretty, pretty. Also? Ronon shooting John and tying him up = automatic A+
But what is up with Rodney and Katie? It feels like they barely know each other. Sure, Rodney's an emotional idiot, but I can't believe that they've been dating for a while now and still can't hold a decent conversation. Or maybe they haven't really been dating? I dunno. It's a bit weird. Cute, but weird.
Tabula Rasa rocked. Excellent use of the team. Thanks.
I have to admit, I wasn't expecting to like "Tabula Rasa" as much as I did, but it was a brilliant story and told perfectly. The name fit the episode well. I loved the lighting, and the reveal of the city at night when Sam and Rodney walk outside wondering how big the place is amazed me. I think it is my favorite shot of the city yet. This was a situation that took very little suspension of disbelief, because foreign (to Earth peoples) diseases are something I would expect explorers to encounter. I also loved how Teyla and Ronon had to start treating everybody else like children and be very patient. And the post-stunning "Never gets old," line by Ronon may have made my Friday evening.
Wow, great episode yesterday. I am really impressed by this season so far.
Oh, and GO PATS! I hope they romp the Colts (well, I know it will be a close game).
I'm confused, Joe. Are you saying that you intended to air a version of Tabula Rasa without the chyrons? They were there, you know. Every time you guys switched back and forth from the present to the past they popped up, either saying "14 hours earlier" or "present" or some such. I don't think they were necessary. Did you think they didn't get included, did I just read your blog wrong, or are we both confused? Help.
I have recently read more than several comments from SG1 fans wanting their favourite characters from SG1 to visit SGA in the near future. Please remember that there are at least some SGA fans who are not SG1 fans. While I have no objections of characters of SG1 appearing in SGA, I hope their is a simple explanation so as not to confuse the SGA fans not familiar with SG1.
I loved the episode Joe. I think you/Alan showed Ronon's humility, and this is a really good thing for his development as a character.
Q: Is McKay going to revert back to being an annoying whimp or is he going to continue to grow like he has so far throughout S4? Q: So are we getting more of that this season?
Puking pumpkins..hmm...sounds interesting...
Would you please be a dear and answer my questions : How much time elapsed between the season three episodes Sunday and Submersion? And is there a timeline for what days these events happened on (in the Stargate universe)? Thank you and good luck with your eye. You realy should go see a doctor.
Definitely my favorite episode this season - I think even my favorite of any SGA season.
I didn't find the flashbacks at all confusing. I liked how a couple of scenes were tagged to differentiate what had happened earlier from the present action, but then the different lighting and focus of the scenes helped make the transition for me.
Cinematography, the writing, the acting, character development, flashbacks...all great. Even the music. It added to the eerie, out-of-sorts feel of the episode.
As a great fan of the McKay character, I love seeing a more well-rounded side of him through the relationship with Katie. I don't have any illusions that the relationship will last (the writers seem to like shaking things up just as you get used to a situation), but I'm hoping that throughout the rest of Season 4 and into Season 5, the writers continue showing a deeper character development for McKay.
But back to Tabula Rasa - Excellent!
Bravo again on Tabula Rasa! People are really pumped up about it! I'm pumped up about Atlantis more than ever! 'Lifeline' and 'Tabula Rasa' best so far in S.4. But I pretty much loved ALL of the episodes this season!
Tabula Rasa was not confusing at all. Just a great episode!
oh! OH! oh! guess what! we got a new dog today, his name is jack and he is retiring from a life as a stud to become our household dog, he is an amazingly sweet boxer!
Joe,
Will the upcoming WGA strike affect Carl and any other writers on staff?
Heh about the pumpkins!
I had huge expectations for this episode based on the premise, so much so that I thought that I was bound to be at least a little bit disappointed. Instead I loved this so much that I would wine, dine, and do vaguely illegal things to it if it was possible. That was some tasty, tasty television going on there.
The non-linear story telling worked perfectly and wasn't confusing at all - the camera work, music and lighting (all fantastically done) were so different that it was obvious where we were positioned in the timeline. There was so much atmosphere you almost needed flippers and an oxygen mask to wade through it all (plus I thought the shot of the city from the balcony where McKay and Carter went out was amazing). Also a fantastic use of the characters.
I know, gushing praise, blah blah. But I just absolutely loved this to bits. Season Four has been the best ever season so far by a mile and it feels like everyone's hit their stride.
I really liked "Tabula Rasa". I thought it was very easy to tell the difference from the past and present.
I think the writing for this season is the best yet. I usually have an episode that is my favorite, but this season I don't think I could pick one. I really like all of them.
Tabla Rasa? Honestly i thought the episode was ok same goes for Travelers, i kinda expected Samantha Tapping to play a bigger role as a leader in the expedition and i kinda wanted to see her argue with Mckay about whats right and whats wrong in scientific terms... that reminds me how Mckay bought the flowers to Carter room and started talking about there relationship was the funniest scene i've watched. Currently the episode I'm looking forward to is Be All My Sins Remember'd, hoping its gonna be a great episode :D
Just got a FEW question
1)i've been going through some of spoiler images in gateworld and i came across this particular image
http://www.gateworld.net/atlantis/s4/images/413_02.jpg.shtml
is that by any chance Keller and Ronon? OR someone that would be introduced later on.
2) When will the ship Phoenix be mentioned?
3) What's your thought on a Teyla and Sheppard relationship? Because i've been arguing with one of my friends about which is a better couple Teyla/Sheppard OR Weir/Sheppard
4) Is Stargate: Universe still on the table as we haven't really heard much on it.. Do you have any news on it?
4) Last and FINAL question which episode would we be seeing a BIG space fight?
So, what did you all think? Were you confused at any point during the episode?
The two time frames were so differently stylistically that I had no problem telling them apart. Having a couple of time stamps at the beginning was a good idea, though.
Definitely a brilliant episode. I saw no plot holes or inconsistencies, which attests to pitch-perfect writing. There were reasons for everything--why the city didn't respond to the bacteria's presence, why gate travel was not an option...just everything that I, as a persnickety fan, would notice.
Acting...fantastic. Pace...ditto. Ronon...rocking my world. Teyla...saving the day. McKay...being very sweet and also freaking out. I can't say enough about how fascinating, creepy and engaging this episode was.
Please answer my question. Why doesn't Carter wear a military uniform? She is in the military, right? Thanks.
So, what did you all think? Were you confused at any point during the episode?
I don't believe it was confusing at all. The different look of past and present, and David Hewlett's masterful switch from competent to confused each time made it all very clear, IMO.
The only nitpick I thought of was the opening scene: how did McKay recognize himself on the computer, if he couldn't remember anything at all? Especially since there don't seem to be any mirrors in Atlantis.
In my neighborhood, one family built an entire castle wall and gate out of plywood that covered the whole front of their house for Halloween, complete with flashy lights, skeletons, and spooky noises. Now that's ambition.

We hear so much about Rodney's allergies, any chance he'll have an actual reaction to something in season 5? I know a lot of fans would love that"
I am not a fan of Rodney/Katie together. Katie is way too sweet. Although it is nice to see Rodney's nice side....he is consciously being soft spoken and sweet. I like to see that once in a while.
I also think it would be great to see Rodney actually have an allergic reaction to something. Maybe first eat citrus and not have a reaction to it (as he's not really allergic to it) and then he gets made fun of. Then really having a reaction to something else he's mentioned and being vindicated. (he could later explain that he thought he was allergic to citrus...maybe he threw up or something or his dad told him he was allergic?) Anyway..it would be an interesting side plot.

Mr. Mallozzi,
I am horrified at the thought that you might NOT have COMPLETELY drained that bottle of Jack !!
GREAT episode ! I had the same thought about the Polaroid, but with Shep and his Johnny Cash poster, I didn't think too much about it. NO, I din't get lost (in time). The episode had me watching every moment, and I knew the 'flashbacks'. Thanks to all, GREAT work !!
Tabula Rasa was FANTASTIC! The one major complaint I have is that it ended too abruptly!
There was all this terrific angst: trying to figure out why McKay had left the message to find Teyla, why did everyone have amnesia, where were Teyla, Ronon and Sheppard, and just trying to figure out what the heck was going on.
When it finally was resolved I needed some time to unwind and relax with the characters, but I felt like I got a minute with Sheppard/Teyla/Ronon and then another minute with McKay/Keller/Katie.
Did the episode run long and have to have the ending cut? It seemed like it needed some more closure!
I loved Shepp at the end! The look on his face when Teyla said some had died was priceless. Especially when he asked where was McKay! Awwww...he really cares about him...even though he loves to gripe about him and tease him at times!
When I used to do daycare, I would pin the kids to the floor with my legs and hold their heads still with my knees to put the eyedrops in. Sounds pretty horrible when I put it in writing, but it was actually pretty fast and efficient, and also painless for us both. Maybe Fondy could help you with those eyedrops.
To date, one of my newest favorite episodes. However, my only complaint...POLAROID! Of all things that managed to get to the Peagus Galaxy...other then that great episode for all chars involved. Especially Radek and Lorne, glad to see them getting a bit more of a roll, that is what really adds to the whole dynamic of the show.
Loved the pics your sister sent you. The luncheon meat head was a very good one.
I loved the episode this week. I wasn't confused at all. I have to say it is one of my top three episodes so far this season. I can't wait for the rest.
As for the problem with your eyedrops, I think you should do what you did before but don't worry about the stopper. Just drop a couple of drops in your eye, one of them has to make it in even if you blink or move.
Hope your eye feel better? I don't know what is worse a toothache or infection in your eye.
Feel better soon.
I think Tabula Rasa is now my current favorite SGA episode ever. I loved every minute of it. Very well done all around. Loved that the great escape plan was bum rushing the door and that Zelenka was running around using a metal rod as a weapon. And Mckay writing on his arms gave me flashbacks to high school. Fantastic.
I am envious of the puking pumpkin. I don't decorate much, just a skull in the bushes by the front door (the rest of the year, it sits in a hole in the concrete porch). I may have to try harder next year.
"I saw no plot holes or inconsistencies, which attests to pitch-perfect writing."
No plot holes? Really?
--How about the part where Mckay the amnesiac used his awesome powers of precognition to write the security code to the cell he didn't know Teyla would be in on his arm?
--How about the part where nobody, not even the enormously intelligent Carter, writes a damn thing down. Except Sheppard of course. He was smart enough to take a picture of himself, though not of anyone else. He wasn't smart enough, however, to leave a picture for himself.
--How about the part where Radek goes from lead pipe to wraith stunner out of sequence.
--And how come Lorne can remember all of his cronies are his cronies? Or that Teyla isn't one of his cronies, even though she's miraculously wearing a uniform in this episode?
--How come Mckay bothered to leave himself that message and chain himself to the chair before pressing the god damn enter key?
--How do "stimulants" equate to ridiculously simplistic paranoia of everyone not "a soldier"?
Joe, feel free to try and explain away these criticisms and defend the logic of the episode. I always get a kick out of you trying to do that.
But...but...it HAD to be a polaroid! That's what Leonard used all the way thru Memento, in addition to his skin. Obviously the gang had watched that film on Atlantis' movie night, eh? Good thing, too...it saved the day.
Not confusing at all! The juxtaposition to Memento -- markers vs. tattoos -- gave me a giggle. And the shot of the city in front of McKay and Carter was phenomenal, seriously.
Way to make fabulous use of Teyla and Ronon. They had a very strong episode, especially Ronon. It was really interested to see him in a position of authority, since he's so deferential to Sheppard as a rule.
Having kind of a hard time with Rodney and Katie, though. Is Katie really so important to McKay that he'd wait for her to wake up rather than sit by his teammate? She's sweet, but somehow I just don't buy it.
But seriously, you guys are rocking it out this season. Can't wait for more.
-- Meghan
What I think I love most about Tabula Rasa is that it so subtly yet clearly shows what we've long known: Zelenka is a gangster. With no idea who he was, where he was, or why it was happening he sees a squad shooting and 'napping people, grabs a pipe and goes underground taking them on. That's righteous.
When I think of a good story I always view it as a tapestry. Interwoven colors and patterns that when you step back from it you see how they contribute to the beautiful grand design.
That’s what I saw in “Tabula Rasa”. Not a wasted word, actor expression, camera move or lighting effect that didn’t contribute an incredible journey with the characters. Having McKay as our POV was a wonderful way to express the confusion and chaos all the characters felt, and show how desperately out of control the situation was. And not knowing who the “good” guys were between beloved characters kept me on edge throughout.
The time shifts were easy to follow with the chyron , effects and sweaty faces, but what really worked for me was how intricately the past and present scenes interwove the story line. Just a great team effort by you, Alan, Paul and Martin Gero. All your hard work really paid off on this one. Congratulations!
Loved loved loved Tabula Rasa. Props to Allan for writing a tight script and giving all the cast significant and appropriate roles. Doppelganger uncovered their fears, and this ep illuminated their strengths. Action, suspense, and character development rolled into one beautifully shot package.
Are you surprised that a less expensive ep (I assume, since there were no new sets or extensive FX shots) got such a positive response?
Interesting note: in physiologic amnesia, the patient may forget any number of things, but never their identity. One of the cooler things about the human brain.
Are we ever going to find a ZPM factory in the city or a Stargate factory?
Just after 4years it bothers alot of us fans that we have neither found anywhere where the Zpms are made or even how they are made. Could be be possible that in a episode in season 5 its metioned about how the Zpm's and Stargates are made somewhere else.
Thank you...
Can you define what their goals are in Atlantis. Are they were to explore worlds in the Pegasus galaxy, or are they there to explore Atlantis?
Tabula Rasa = Filler episode
This one heads straight to my recycle Bin. Another 40 minutes wasted on Atlantis. So far none of the episodes in season 4 is re-watchable...
I haven't seen Tabula Rasa yet, but as far as I can tell from the comments people are complaining about a Polaroid camera being in the Pegasus Galaxy.
What's wrong with that?
It just means that the owner, (perhaps original owner if it is now used by one of the main characters), is not American. In some countries, like mine, a digital camera is hellishly expensive whereas a normal camera is not.
Kudos to Alan and team for a great ep! IMO, the time switching worked well this time. Curious about 2 things:
1) Why did Shep take longer to recover? I'm sure fans of Shep whump approve...
2) Will we see more of Rodney's "softer side" and relationship with Katie? How did this come about?
Thanks! Keep up the great work.
Hi Joe.....pumpkins are awesome....have not seen Tabula yet because I'm saving it for mid week when I'll definitely need a pick me up. :)
Two questions if you don't mind....
1) Are you able to discuss the writer's strike?
2) If so, does your being in Canada and Canadian have any bearing on things in relation to the strike? Does the WGA cover work done in Canada?
Cheers Joe!!
John
1.What is your response to the (proposed) Emmerich-Devlin stargate movies? 2.Do you think they will impinge on your/the show's mythology.
3.Do you think RCC and BW would have to be involved to make sure that things didn't go eskew interms of mythology?
I have a question about "Tabula Rasa":
Why couldn't the jumper be used to dial the gate even with the main dialer disabled? In "Condemned" there wasn't a DHD of any kind on the prison island, but the jumper still dialed out.
Anne Teldy
Hey Joe,
*Loved* Tabula Rasa! Keep those kinds of episodes coming!
1. Is there any chance we can get the mention of Ford in that episode with the stick fights that Carl was writing?
2. IS there any chance Earth will be retrofitting a ha'taak ship?
I didn't think Tabula rasa was confusing at all. And i loved the way you filmed the past sequences, realy made it evn more creapey. I think generally this season directors seem to be filming in a diffferent way, using angles that havn't been used previously, also i gues the new bits of set are help full (or maybee its the old bits of set, just moved around?) I love all the views of the city, it realy makes you appreciate how big (and beutiful) it is.
Also i loved the writing for this episode, i thought there were some lovely charicter moments, and you are realy developing the 'team feeling' this season. I loved the McKay plant (spiney plant hiding in shrubabry!). I think the scenes between him and Katie are realy cute and so totally correct for geeks in love! Just one question, how far do you see them being relationship wise in this episode, just dating or much more than that? McKay seems to be quite seriouse about her. McKays charicter has come so far since his SG1 days, he is actually a realy nice guy (if a bit neurotic)
I like the way Carter and Keller are integrating, they totally feel part of atlantis now. Also i thought it was fantastic that Zalenka managed to evade the military (Go Radek!).
The sound track is fantastic..... i have to admit to watching the first two episodes when they were accedentally released with no sound, and the sound deffinately makes a big difference (the episodes were still great though!)
The costume department are doing a great job with teylas costume..... i think a prefur the pregnant tayler costumes to the normal ones...much cooler!
Thanks for the fantastic episode... i cant wait for next week!!

I wasn't confused at all. I thought it was very clear how the story was progressing. I personally preferred this sort of 'flashback' story telling to that of Sunday. Sunday, for me, seemed disjointed and a tad repetitive. TR wasn't. It maintained the momentum of the story while setting out clearly what was happening. I liked the use of different styles of shooting, and felt it added to the suspense and confusion McKay was feeling, (concerning the bleeding through style lighting coming through the shots).
Thus I felt it was extremely successful and added greatly to the episode.
Tabula Rasa was so great!
It seemed to end rather abruptly though, instead I think it would have worked excellently as a two-parter.
Regardless, One of my favourite episodes of all time! ^^
Hi, Joe.
In watching "Tabula Rasa" again (the 4th time, great episode), I confirmed what I thought I had noticed the third time watching the episode...Sam isn't wearing dog tags.
Is there a reason/explanation for this? Just curious, I won't sulk or hold my breath or anything.
Hope you are feeling better!
Morjana
I forgot the question I was going to ask but I just wanted to add to the whole Tabula Rasa lovefest going on. I thought the episode was great. If I was someone flipping through channels and found it on I would have watched the rest and thought 'I'll need to remember and watch that next week', probably even searched for when it was repeated so I could watch the whole thing right through.
Here's a question : When McKay said he forgot mothers day five years in a row my first thought was 'I wonder which one of the writers forgot mothers day five years in a row'. It sounded like something one of you would say when you were talking about the whole amnesia thing. Is that how the line came about or am I just assuming you are all terrible sons? (well maybe not all. I have my money on it being either you or Gero :) )
Just watched Tabula Rasa and I thought it was brilliant! One of the best episodes i have EVER seen...of anything, really really enjoyed it. The general feel of the show, the confusion and the way it was done was excellent, congrats to you all up there.
Tabula Rasa was awesome, thanks for that, although Missing looks like it could be even better
Martin's idea for the different lighting was spot on. I didn't really need the information telling me when we'd switched.
Another wonderful episode! I am so enjoying this season. Not a stinker in the lot of 'em.
Had to come back because I FORGOT how much I LOVED Tabula Rasa!!! GREAT photography & use of characters, killer opening- THIS story is more like what I want to see- no one acted stupid, even when they couldn't remember. Ronon's comment stunning John was the big laugh- yup Sci#2 got a laugh too kudos :) Interesting way to tell the story no confusion here (didn't need the time captions) and yes, there's hope for Keller!! her smarts were proved this time by going thru Beckett's records for a clue instead of the Ancients'. I loved that Teyla knew the cure, Ronon knew what to look for and that Rodney setup the Wraith bioweapon delivery system to distribute the cure. The science stuff was explained well. I LOVE Katie/Rodney, you really had me scared she was going to get killed off now. It's coming, isn't it :( Loved Radek running loose. Loved Sam. LOVED the end scene with John & then Rodney. This is the kind of episode that will keep my interest & SGA on TV.
Now here comes my current biggest gripe with SGA- PLEASE give Maj Lorne a FIRST NAME!!! I love this character too & hope he keeps getting used but c'mon its bordering on ridiculous now calling him Major or Lorne in personal scenes- a perfect example was Teyla trying to reason with him from the cell, DEFINITELY she would've been using his first name (the sleepwalking incident in Doppelganger was another) so if not this season then getting Lorne a first name is my biggest wish for season 5!!! hey it would be a great promotional contest for the fans to name Lorne if it hasn't been done yet. DD
We enjoyed Tabula Rasa, especially the line, “never gets old” by Ronon. Hee hee.
Hey, Jill Wagner (Larrin from SGA’s Travelers episode) was featured in Parade magazine’s Personality Parade. It’s the Sunday magazine insert in many US newspapers. There’s a question about the “woman in those Mercury TV Ads” and in the answer, she mentions “Sci-Fi Channel’s Stargate Atlantis.” You can read her quote here on Tuesday, November 6, 2007.
And, the image (Ronon/Keller) someone mentioned above can be found here.
Hi Joe! Sorry to hear about your recent medical problems! I hope you start feeling better soon!
I have a question--am I the only one who doesn't want there to be any "relationships" on the show at all? I feel like that's where "Battlestar Galactica" has started to go wrong too. I don't want to see angst about Starbuck and Apollo and I don't want to see relationship stuff about Rodney and Katie either (or Sheppard and Sam and Teyla or whoever, for that matter)! I enjoyed "Tabula Rasa" a lot--except for the awkward relationship fumblings. I worry about it becoming too soap opera-y. I know that there are a lot of people who feel really strongly about characters hooking up, but I wish that that it hadn't been such bookends for the episode. I just want to watch them explore the city and meet/fight other aliens. Is that so wrong?
PS. I read somewhere that Sheppard and Sam were going to be flirting or something...that's just internet crazy talk, right? :-)
Take care!
Joe, Tabula Rasa was great. All of you did a great job. Thanks. Season 4 thus far, extremely great!
Take care,
Ivana
While I don't think the chyrons were necessary because I am smart enough to realize when we've jumped times, I do like that it tells us just how much time. When you're talking about the progression of a disease (or whatever) it's actually kind of helpful, and not distracting in the least. I find subtitles translating a different language to be much worse.
I absolutely loved Tabula Rasa! And in answer to your question, I wasn't confused at all. I've seen a lot of amnesia episodes on various TV shows, but I liked this particular spin on it.
I liked how all the main characters, though they didn't know who they were, still managed to fall into their roles that come natural to them.
Next week's Missing looks good as well!
To anonymous: Lorne has a first name. It's Evan. It was discused on this blog a ways back, but that's what it is.
"Tabula Rasa" was quite good. Got a question though; why wasn't Carter in her uniform? Or is that the top under the green jacket? Looks very casual, and no dog tags either ?
Anonymous said: "Any reason you talked about Tabula Rasa this week in your write-up and the only time you mentioned Travelers was when answering the mailbag? Were you disappointed with a lot of the negative reaction to it and that is why you really haven't talked about it?"
"A lot of the negative reaction?" I've seen mostly positive reviews both here and elsewhere on the net. Sure, not everybody liked it. Not everybody liked Adrift, Lifeline, Reunion, Doppelganger, Tabula Rasa either... There will always be someone who doesn't like this or that episode, depending on individual preferences. But so far I've seen far more positive than negative reviews everywhere on the net for all the episodes aired, and Travelers was no exception. So I don't know what you mean about negative reaction. Most people seemed to liked it pretty much.

Just wanted to say THANK YOU for Tabula Rasa! I think this may well be my favourite episode of the entire season so far.. and I loved the previous eps! This season is just going from strength to strength!
Such a fabulous team episode.. loved that everyone was involved and had a role to play - including Lorne and Zelenka. Great premise (really, the possibility of different pathogens has to be a very real danger in a new galaxy) and the structure of the episode worked so well! It was great to watch a second (oh, okay, and third and fourth and fifth! :D) time, knowing the outcome, and see the little hints along the way and understand how they fitted in (e.g. Sheppard telling Lorne "I've got an idea").
Fascinating to see how the characters act whilst amnesiac, what characteristics they hang onto the longest etc. And just such a lovely feel-good team episode - I really got a wonderful vibe of the team caring for each other and being worried about each other in this ep.
Oh and there was the whole Sheppard whump thing... that was pretty good too... Okay, I admit it, it was AWESOME! :D Possibly the best infirmary scene EVER! Oh and confirmation that yes, Ronon thinks stunning his CO is great fun!
Oh I could ramble on for hours about all the different things I loved about this episode - and already have done elsewhere - but I just wanted to let you know how much I enjoyed it. Oh and please tell Alan he has a growing fan club amongst the Shep whumpers... ;)
Loved Tabula Rasa!!! But since Sheppard is giving photos of himself to other men; does this make him gay/bi?
I just wanted to say Tabula Rasa is my favourite episode so far, I love it! Second favourite would be doppleganger. Below is a list of all that I loved.
- more Zelenka and Lorne
- Teyla and Ronon more utilized
- Katie/Rodney scenes
- love the look and not at all confusing
- love the soundtrack
- intriguing plot
- it was well balanced
Kudos to everyone involved...I hope this episode and Doppleganger will be used as models for how episodes should be written in the 5th season. Big Explosions and cool concepts aside, it is the character moments both good and bad and the interactions between the characters that really make this show memorable.
Are there any major cast changes planned for season 5 at this point??
*waves*
So what did I think of the Tabula Rasa. Well if you're feeling a bit of an insomniac i'd suggest reading it on my blog. But since I know you're probably feeling a bit crotchety at whumping yourself i'll be succint! I can do that on occasions. Top class ep, from start to finish! The direction, the story, the characters, the bonding. The infirmary scene *squeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee* Oh you knew I had to do that, lol. I guess you can add pierced eardrums to your list of mishaps. Sorry. *blushes* It just slipped out! :o) Best line of the ep? No contest. Ronon shooting Shep, "Never gets old!" hehehe because it's so true, lol. Okay, that maybe the whumper in me talking. But, I loved it from start to finish, and Teyla got a big part! Yeah! You kept to your word. :o)
*hugs*
Oh quick question while i'm here. I've got to give a presentation next week on Stargate. Any tips or hints on what I should bring to the foreground to showcase how great SGA is? Maybe *cough* props would be a good idea ;)Or if you're not using the 'Gate for now, mind if I borrow it for a while? ;) I promise to return it in it's originaly condition via UPS before the start of season 5. ;o)
*hugs*
Thankyou Mr M you're a very wise and kind man! Didn't I say I could do succint... hmmm I'm working on it, I promise.
Blog Question: So, what did you all think? Were you confused at any point during the episode?
I was more intrigued than confused. I don't think confusion entered my frame of reference. We have seen this format before, i.e., "Sunday" and recognized and accepted that this is yet another form of telling the story.
Loved it!
joe wanted to let you know we loved "Tabla Rasa" the puking pumpkin was great. i still think ya'll need to do an epp with rodney reacting to all his fears of food allergies coming true. i think we would all laugh our heads off lol
barb from kentucky
Hi Mr. Mallozzi
I absolutely loved the last episode. "Tabula Rasa" was very creative and seeing the characters acting so different yet maintaining the basics of their personalities was brilliant, and kudos must go out to the talented actors.
I was wondering though (and of course taking into account that I have not seen either of the two SG1 movies coming out, naturally) Would it ever be a consideration for Michael Shanks to be offered a full time spot on Stargate Atlantis? Like others have stated, it seems natural for Dr. Jackson to be there, and if the Ori plot line is indeed completed, the idea of his being in Atlantis seems even more logical. I don't even know of course if he would be interested in committing to another TV series, but I cannot help but wonder.
thank you, Gina.
joseph
je voulais savoir si lagrêve des scénaristes affecterai la diffusion de la saison 4 et la realisation de la saison 5?
j'espere pas
merci d'avance
First, a question: Do you expect to be affected by the (US) Screen Writers' Guild strike, if it happens?
Now, an answer:
--How do you feel about turnips, both greens and root?”
Answer: Love ‘em. Got any good recipes?--
*sigh*
Alas, I'm not the cook, let alone Southern US cook, that Mom was. I buy frozen or canned turnips and follow package instructions.
*returns from pantry*
Happened to have a can of Bush's Chopped Turnip Greens with Diced Turnips on the shelf. "Ingredients: Turnip greens and diced turnips, water and salt." Pretty basic. http://www.bushbeans.com/products/nutritioninformation.php#turnipgreensdicedturnip
Shall I pick up a couple of fresh cans and ship them?
Mom cooked turnips fresh from the garden with salt and some diced ham or bacon if available. May have used the pressure cooker.
Picking and washing them was my job. Those leaves can be almost as prickly as fiberglass!
For basic fresh-greens recipe, see JOY OF COOKING by Rombauer and Becker, c. 1964. Vol. I, Vegetables chapter, p. 293 (in my copy), "About Greens".

Another day, I'll relate the "spinach or turnips" story.
Gilder
PS--I enjoyed both "Travelers" and "Tabula Rasa".
In S5, I'd like to see the Pegasus Travelers compared/contrasted with the Irish and/or American Travellers (FX Network's "The Riches").

Are you keeping up with season 4 of House? If you are, which of the residents do you hope make House's team?
DD
His name is Evan Lorne, isn't it? I think Joe said it some time back, but I stand to be corrected.
I love your Halloween schpeil. The barfing pumpking was cool in a gross kind of way. I actually have 2 questions. 1) Is there any kind of chance that you will stop the war with the fans and bring Beckett back in S5 in more than a couple of shows? 2) Why can you not read fanfiction. Sounds sorta crazy. You'd think it'd be flattering. Who's nutsy idea is that anyways?
Sorry. That question has been bugging me for a while. Please answer it for me.
Halloween planet for season 5 of atlantis pleaaaaaaaaase you can do the Pumpkins
and have the haunty music and stuff
Hey JM...
Just wanted to send in my praise for Tabula Rasa, since I wasn't too fond of Travelers. TB was great I felt in connecting to Doppelganger and we revisit the fears of the cast.
Further more, in regards to the small revolt scene between the scientist and far gone military against the military in charge. I personally like it because it showed the not only a proletariat vs bourgoeisie perspective. But I also read a sort of commentary to fandom (which might not have been the case but I felt reflected); in the sense of touching on the fears of the fans.
Those who were afraid SGA would turn into a military run show or be militarized as opposed to Civie run as we saw in TR during the middle. The rational animal vs the irrational. Then we see a battle of wills as to who will win the face off. Of course those with guns had the upper hand but it was great to show the battle none the less. Plus I thought it touched on the underdog (proletariat) state of the SGA team within the Peggy vs the dominant enemies (konwn and unknown) and how unity is the only way to win.
Wicked cool ep and thoroughly enjoyed it.
Hi Joe, sorry for being such a Moaning Minnie last week, but I hate being ill. Glad to hear you went to the dr's and pursuing the treatment.
YAY!!! The second half of S3 of SGA starts tonight (Mon) 7.30pm on Prime in NZ. When I saw this advertised on Sat night, I started to feel much better. :)
As for Halloween - lots of parents are uncomfratble with teeling their children not to accept candy from strangers for 364 days of the week, then send the kids out to get candy on Halloween, so they (like my sister) have afternoon tea for the kids + friends.
Also some kids are afraid of witches/ghosts etc, so a new venture has started here in my city; it's called the White Lighter party. I hven't yet talked to anyone who attended but it's like an anti-Halloween thing.
Take care.
Will any of the crew become overwhelmed with rage, forcing them to some surprising actions?
Can you tell us around what episode Michael's super bugs will be showing up?
Tabula Rasa was the best episode so far this season. Great writing(no one had to overact this week), great directing, great lighting and great editing.
I was not confused at all by the going back and forth in time. It was very obvious which time frame we were in every time.
Loved the Ronan/Sheppard confrontation scene outside of the puddle jumper. The dialogue was excellent, the acting by Jason and The Flan was top-notch.
Teyla's costumes have been awesome this season. Too bad Rachel had to get pregnant in order for her to wear these great costumes. The exposed belly look must go ...now that you've given her some style.
LOVED "Tabula Rosa," especially the scenes with Zelenka and Lorne, and Sheppard and Ronon on the planet. The polaroid was really funny. I'm not sure I like Rodney and Katie Brown; I would rather not see relationships on this show, unless it's between Teyla and her **spoiler for the rest of the season**.
I can't wait to see next week's ep!
Hi Joe -
I've been out of town, and just caught up on your November posts today. I just had to ask.....Japanese Tapas????? As tapas are spanish, and japanese is, well, japanese...can you provide some further enlightenment, please?
*waves*
Only a quick one for a good friend. :D Feel free to tell me to keep my nose out of it ;)

I always get a kick out of you trying to do that."
Okay, anon, let's talk plot holes shall we?
1. Mckay wrote down the security code after Teyla got escorted by the guards and said on the screen at the beginning she would possibly be in the brig... hence the writing of the code.
2. The others didn't write anything down, because they were too far gone. Rodney had not long seen the message to himself! This remembered. Sheppard had not gotten to the stage where his memory was affected when the picture was taken.
3. Is it remotely possibly that Radek hit someone else over the head and stole the stunner, or maybe grabbed Lorne's. ;)
4. All his 'cronies' were dressed the same as him, with guns and stunners, Teyla, nor anyone else were dressed like him, not even Sheppard had on his tac-vest.
5. McKay was distracted from finishing by Teyla being taken away. So the first thing he did was video a message as it was more important for him to remember her than finish the aerosol. She was the key in all of this.
6. Excessive stimulants can cause paranoia. See also number 3.
I know i'm not Joe, so feel free to whinge at me. ;) Did that help with those gaping plot holes at all? *smiles sweetly* I may not have all the answers, but at least i'm not nitpicking. ;)
Hi Joe,
I was just wondering if Christopher Nolan's film "Memento" was any inspiration for 'Tabula Rasa'. I like Rodney writing on himself to remember and it reminded me of that.
Loved Tabula Rasa, beautifully done. The whole thing reminded me of Memento, especially the polaroid Lorne had at the end with the captions, and McKay writing on himself.
Was it in any was a tribute to the movie?
P.S. The teaser is the best one yet of all the episodes, just set the mood for the whole episode. And, no, not confused. Just rendered speechless in awe of this wonderful episode.
Hey, Joe, just a quick note to add to the "Huzzahs!" for *Tabula Rasa*. This is probably my favorite episode so far in an already fantastic season. I loved the nonlinear storytelling, and got a huge kick out of Radek (whom I've now Christened Radek the Nimble) and his mad evasion skills.
*Were you confused at any point during the episode?*
Maybe for a nanosecond at certain points, but it was all good.
Hey Joe
I wanted to add to the pludits for Tabula Rasa...fabulous ep and I felt just the right touch with the chyrons. (my hubby needs them bless him) But I'd also like to say that I LOVED Travellers. Have watched it again this morning in between working LOL so that makes um oh i've seen it about 20 times now. This is definitely one of my faves...have to say the whole season so far rocks! When you said before that season 4 rocked I was like...hmmmm well he has to say that he's a runner for the show but you were right! It does rock! Looking forward to the rest of it.
One question tho, In Tabula Rasa, the photo behind Keller in Sam's office...is that you? looks a bit like you.
huggles to the pups and to you.

Hi Joe!
I am a looooong term lurker ... like in years ... lurking ...
only the lure of a "virtual" dinner for the 750,000 visitor could draw me out!!!
I was really waiting for the 1,000,000 visitor, and the autographed RDA or BB boxers ... but ...
LOL ... you now know where my intersts lie ...
We are Angus beef breeders, so if you ever need a AAAA steak for a special occasion, give me a call.
So, what do you think of Canadian Food?!
In Calgary, there are a couple of fantastic restaurants, The River Cafe and The Bears Den, that are exceptional for local and regional cuisine.
If I WIN *hint* *hint* I would even consider reversing the offer and taking you and Fondy out for a real dinner, next time your just barely east of the Rockies!
