November 4, 2007

Last night, Fondy and I went out to dinner with our good friend Ted and his girlfriend Vicki. We’d been meaning to do Peking Duck for a while and, after many, many get-back-ya‘s, we finally got around to it. And so, we ended up at Fortune Garden Seafood Restaurant (1475 West Broadway), which is purported to serve up the best Peking Duck in town. For those of you unfamiliar with Peking Duck, I’ve included a step-by-step dining breakdown with accompanying pics. All you need are the following ingredients: steamed pancakes, crispy duck skin slices, green onions, sliced cucumbers (optional), hoisin sauce.

1. Unfold the pancake onto your plate.

2. Lay a piece of the crispy duck skin onto the pancake.

3. Add the green onion and/or cucumber slice.

4. Top with hoisin sauce.

5. Wrap it up and eat.

Simple and delicious. Well, the eating part anyway. The dish is usually served in two courses - the first making use of the duck skin, the second making use of the actual duck meat which is cooked up with onions and veggies and served in a lettuce wrap with hoisin sauce. We, of course, skipped that second, somewhat healthier course. Instead, we sampled a couple of unusual plates, the most interesting being the salt and pepper geoduck with jalapeno peppers. Ever seen a geoduck? If you have, eating it is probably the last thing that would cross your mind (I’d be more inclined to use it as a weapon). It’s a cross between a clam and an elephant trunk. Sounds tasty, no? Well, it was. But then again, fry up Fondy sandals with a little garlic and they’d probably prove pretty damn tasty too.

Today, we all gathered at Rob’s place to watch professional sport’s most milquetoast team win another game. Because the Cleveland-Seattle game went into overtime, I arrived home late. Fondy paid me back by heading out to Port Moody to check out another French bulldog puppy. Paul has warned me that we’re dangerously close to becoming “that crazy dog couple”.

Well, it’s the calm before the storm. After an easygoing week of tossing story ideas around, we head back into the office to actually begin breaking season five. Ideally, I would love for each of us to head off with 2 scripts each Still, with most of November ahead of us, and a number of story ideas in development, there’s no reason why we can’t half the season in play by the time we head back in January.

Just wondering, but will SGA 5 be affected in any way by the upcoming writer's strike, or is that something that does not influence canadian shows?

When you describe how an idea for an episode is generated, it seems that it is more a collective process to create the plot than just one person writing the script from scratch. Which I think means that really all the credited writer for a particular episode has done is flesh out the basic idea you have all created. Would that be right? The length of this comment makes it unlikely you'll answer it. Crap.

Anonymous said...

Here's a shorter one then. What does executive production actually involve? Apologies if that shows my complete ignorance of the subject.

Mr. M, you are officially the winner for today of the wordpoint game: cheers for "milquetoast"! Stargate Shmargate, you rock just for the use of that word!!!

I really enjoyed Tabula Rasa - it was totally not what I expected. I'm also curious as to what McKay wrote on his arms - one thing seemed Ancient? Also very interesting having Radek be the one to introduce the "the soldiers will come and take you away" thing - considering his likely stormy childhood and the history of Czechoslovakia... But I think my favourite part was seeing Lorne in full scary military mode. Really gave Mr. Smith a chance to shine. Very well done episode. So far S4 hasn't had an ep yet I haven't loved! (unlike 3.19 with Michael's superbugs, which were visually the most ridiculous thing I've ever seen on STargate, which is saying something). Keep up the good work!

Anonymous said...

Tabula Rasa was really good. It is now tied with Reunion for the bet episode of season four [so far]. Zelenka was very funny in this episode and the hide and seek scene was hilarious [Hadn't any of them ever played hide and seek? Hiding at the end of a cabinet is absolutely pointless.] The thing to do when watching one of the season four episodes is Identify The Picture Person. In other words, whenever a photo shows up [normally in offices] try and identify who it is. It's really annoying when the camera is just close enough to see that there is a photo but not close enough to see who it is.

Please answer my questions. 1) Why doesn't Sam wear a military uniform and dog tags? She is in the military, right? 2) Anymore good Zelenka episodes coming up (Tabula Rasa was a good one)? Thanks.

What are the names of Elizabeth Weir's parents? Thank you.

Zelenka seemed really scared of the soldiers. Was it just because of the fact that they took people to 'the mess hall' or was it because of a previous experience (such as from his childhood)? Thank you.

Gina said on Nov. 3:"Would it ever be a consideration for Michael Shanks to be offered a full time spot on Stargate Atlantis?"

Sure, then why don't rename it Atlantis: SG-1?
I don't like the idea of SG-1 characters guest starring on Atlantis, but I can live with it. After all two or three scenes in a season with SG-1 guest stars isn't too bad (as long as it's not another The Return II with more than 15 minutes with O'Neill. If I wanted to watch him, I would watch SG-1. I watch Atlantis and not SG-1 for a reason). But full time? Leave it for the SG-1 movies. People watch Atlantis because of their characters. There's no need to add yet another character from another show. We are already stuck with more than enough of those as of this season. Another one would be too much to stand.

I guess you have no input in the polls MGM posts at the site: http://stargate.mgm.com
However I'd like to point out that the current poll asks "Have you been enjoying this season of Atlantis?"
Right now only 69% answered "yes".
I'm curious if they think this % is within the expected range.
Personally I voted "yes". I'm not happy with the changes and if it was my choice, I'd like to have Elizabeth and Carson back. However I'm also enjoying s4 very much because I love John, Rodney, Teyla and Ronon (Radek and Lorne too), and so far I liked all the episodes.
But if I were MGM, I'd like to know the reason why 31% so far have voted "No" or "Undecided". Is it all because of the cast changes? Is it because of something else like story arcs?
Hope they follow up this with future polls or other kind or research to see why more than 30% of people who are fans enough to go and vote on an online poll are not decidely enjoying this season.

The writing and portrayal of Carter and Keller are sadly proving far too feeble to make any substantial contribution to the episodes in which they appear. Comments from fans in many quarters are growing more critical of how badly Carter and Keller have been handled to this point.

It is becoming increasingly clear that in order to ensure that Season Five is a success, Weir and Beckett must be reinstated as regular characters. The time to correct the errors that have been made in Season Four is NOW. Joe, it's time to swallow your pride and do the right thing, for the future of SGA.

Maybe that is your feeling, and you are certainly entitled to it, but given the nature of the Character of Daniel Jackson, it would seem a natural thing for him to need/want to be on Atlantis, considering his experience with the Ancients.

thats all I was trying to suggest.

SciFi Wire just published the SciFi Channel ratings for "Doppelganger" - 0.9.

Hopefully, with SciFi Channel moving Flash Boredom to 8pm, and airing a SGA season 4 rerun at 9pm, the NEW SGA 10pm episode will have a better lead in.

Looking forward to "Missing."

PS - Was there a reason Sam was NOT wearing dog tags in "Tabula Rasa?"

The WGA strike doesn't seem to be affecting your plans, although I know that American-run shows that film in Canada are striking (Off the top of my head, I think both Smallville and Supernatural are striking.) Is MGM/Skiffy not a struck company? Or don't you consider breaking to be the equivalent to writing? Or is there another reason? Love to hear it, my understanding of the strike is shaky at best!

Hey joe

Will we be seeing anymore The Siege -like battles in the future? Nothing has happened with Atlantis' Spaceships... Us earthlings need a fleet don't you think? It seems every other major species has one... wraith, replicator, Goa'Uld, asgard etc. that way we can have some nice battles. The tension leading up to the invasion by the wraith was excellent, and the whole night setting made it very epic. The series is starting to get... (and i dont want to say it, but:) boring.

GIVE MOAR BATTLES!

I am a fan of Stargate Atlantis and having been buying the DVD sets when they come out as here in Malaysia it is a bit slow in showing the show. I have the complete season 1 to 10 of Stargate SG-1 (I know just bought it when it came out).

I just wanted to say that the technology in Stargate Atlantis is a bit low tech isn't it, I mean we have the Discovery Channel showing us ground laser that can take down planes and satelites and stuff like "scar remover" being sold in the supermarket nowadays and none of this is shown in Stargate Atlantis (by the way the "scar remover" sold in Malaysia is extremely effective, it can even remove a 10 year old scar, really amazing stuff but really expensive). We have the British saying by 2012 they would have an invisible tank and invisible jacket for its soldier but in Stargate Atlantis we seem to be stuck in World War 2. If you want to improve ratings look at new technology that has just been introduced not just in the US but the World (like the earth quake generator in Russia, the diamond chips created by Russian scientist, go ahead and look at the goodies they are covering up). For example the producer of fake diamonds in US stated that the technology was bought from Russia, Russia needed to make fake diamonds that could conduct electricity (like the real ones) to make diamond chips for the space programmes (for diamond chips check out Intel and AMD holy grail). Advance in medical science plastic surgery could cure some forms of skin cancer, etc. it is just no one writes about it because it is expensive.

Please, I beg you please introduce more advance up to date technology (rail gun technology already been in production shown in Discovery). Show the sound device in "Future Weapons" Discovery Channel that can kill or subdue a person, extremely impressive, incapaciting or killing a person with direct sound waves. Already being manufactured in US.

Please introduce more current weapon, medical and electronic technology in Stargate Atlantis or you will lose a fan.

And even if there weren't toothed whales on earth, Rodney's dreaming about a whale in an alien ocean in a different galaxy. They could definitely have teeth.

I would just like to say a huge thank you to you and all those involved in having Kavan Smith onscreen for more than 30 seconds. It *almost* makes up for the lack of Chuck ;)

I just saw the Live+Same Day ratings for Doppelganger at Gateworld. I know Sci Fi decided to renew the show AFTER those ratings were available to them, but I have to wonder, if the ratings keep falling, if they can still cancel the show or lower the number of episodes. Sure, the 0.9 will improve after Live+3days and Live+7days, but it'll still be lower than an original 1.1+3/7days or 1.2+3/7 days. Unless Nielsen viewers massively bought DVRs from one Friday to the other, it seems unlikely that the final ratings will be the same as before.

Sadly, it seems season 5 will be definitely the last season. I love the show and I would've loved to see it for many more seasons. However, I don't like the cast changes and I think Elizabeth is a million times better than Sam or any other SG-1 character. I also think that Carson is far better than Keller, but in this case it wouldn't be fair to compare a character that was in the show for 3 seasons to one that has been in just a few episodes so far. Don't get me wrong, I've liked all the episodes in s4 so far. But the only reason I still enjoy the show is because the team is there: John, Ronon, Teyla and Rodney. Not because of the new additions.

You said that the decision about Elizabeth and Sam were not related. I have no reason to believe otherwise. Maybe when the decision about bringing Sam instead of a new character was made, the thought was that Sam was an already known character in the franchise and it would attract SG-1 viewers, something a new character wouldn't do? I know several fans of SG-1 that started to watch Atlantis because of Sam, so yes, this attracted new viewers, and personally I don't know any SGA fan who has stopped watching the show because of the cast changes. However, ratings haven't improved, just remained stable with respect to the second half of s3. I guess things just compensated: the number of viewers Atlantis lost because of the cast changes is more or less the same as the number of viewers the show won because of the cast changes. Or at least I thought so until now. I guess we'll see with the next bunch of ratings if Doppelganger was a glitch or the new ratings number the show will get from now on. If it wasn't a glitch, I find it significant that the show's ratings dropped right after the general audience finds that a established SGA character is really gone and a character from SG-1 is now the base leader. Maybe the issues are not related and the general audience decided to watch something else for completely different reasons. I don't know.

I think this poster must have found one of those SG1 “alternate universe mirrors” and transported themselves into our universe. They have not been watching the same Stargate Atlantis I have.

I do love the “too feeble” since most of the posting before Season four started to air was a worry that Carter would take over the show. If there ever was a “too feeble” character on Atlantis it was Weir.

Joe - why was Carter in civilian clothes and no dog tags in TR? She is, afterall, in the military. I read more than once in numerous places that was one of the reasons given for why she was chosen as the new commander of Atlantis - she's military.

I had to chuckle at this. I completely agree! I never did like Weir very much. And, in trying to appease the naysayers who are afraid that Carter will take over the show, the writers/producers are being bashed for showing a "softer" Carter. I guess you can't win ;-)

Hey Joe,
I liked Tabula Rasa very much but I have one complaint. Why did Radek speak English when he forgot everything? Shouldn´t he have spoken in Czech when he met Sam and Rodney?
Or is this pointless swearing of his enough for you?
Thanks

Anonymous said...

I'm just catching up on some of the comments submitted, so forgive me if this has been pointed out by someone else.

Does it occur to those of you complaining about how "feeble" Carter and Keller are, or how they don't fit in that this could be deliberate on the part of the writers?

Yes, you can have someone enter a situation and appear to be strong and in charge, but it seems to me that it's far more realistic that they need to find their way and work out their own anxieties before settling in. Even Carter's past experience doesn't preclude her from having to feel her way around a new posting, especially one in which she's in charge of something as large as the Atlantis expedition.

As for losing Weir and Beckett, yes, cast changes can be hard, especially when you've become emotionally invested in a character, but it may also be good to remember that shows with static casts can often get old really fast. Shows like SG-1 are probably the exceptions rather than the rule.

Just my opinion...

Another Dog, really? at this point wouldn't it be easy to bread your own so you have new puppies every year.
I really love french bull dogs I wish I could have a dog again (have a cat by marriage so no dogs for now), I come from a family of veterinarians so I have always been surrounded by animals I miss that.

I just re watch Tabula Rasa, what a great episode, I always get a laugh at the part at the end when Ronon and Sheppard encounter the soldiers, and Ronon is trying to tell Lorne to listen to him an then says:

-Just look in to your vest pocket ( Ronon is clearly away from Lorne)

--What?

-"Just Look in to your vest pocket!!!"

and at this point
I almost expect Lorne to pull rabbit out of it or an ace of spades or something.

Lorne is shocked and surprised as everyone breaks in applause and Ronon takes a bow.

But of course that's not what happens, but I can almost see it happening every time.
It's like the moment is leading to it.

Thankfully not. Loved the episode last Friday. Katie and Rodney don't seem too comfortable with each other. Is this a relationship that is going to fizzle out or is it just that each is taking their time to get to know one another and Rodney is more sensitive that we thought? Thanks and I hope you better. OOHHH! Could you send a shout out to my kids-Christian, Marianne, and Bethany (9). Thanks!!!

In YOUR opinion...In mine, I think Carter and Keller are doing just fine. I don't want Weir back thank you very much, the show is much better without her, in my opinion, and I haven't missed her at all. I'd have no objection to Beckett popping up when and if it's appropriate to the story, but not full time. Whether I like it or not, he's gone, and though he is coming back for some guest spots, I can't say I'd like Keller to be replaced by Beckett as CMO now. I was sad when he died, but I've come to really like Keller.

Quite a few people I know feel the same way as me. So, who's right in their opinions, you or me? How can you judge? Take a poll?

I think I'll leave it to the Execs to decide, not a bunch of fans who say they know how a large proportion of the fans feel...

Joe

Now that the show has dropped below the 1.0 in the ratings for the first time in history (Doppelganger getting a 0.9) some people are saying they expect a reduced season 5, or for it to be stopped altogether after season 4. Could this happen?

Thanks

Ditto on the writer's strike question. I got to wondering about that this morning. :)

Hey Joe!

Just got back from holiday in Burbank and am now home SICK! They seriously need to consider installing anti-kootie filtration systems in airplanes.

Didn't you ever see that episode of Dirty Jobs where Mike Rowe went to the Geoduck farm? That was an interesting episode... I just couldn't eat something that looks so phallic..

=P

The only reason I know of geoducks is from "Dirty Jobs". There was an episode where Mike went and worked on a geoduck farm. Very educational. ;)

Loving season 4! I adore Keller, and Carter is fitting in better than I had thought possible.

I know you said that SGA would not be effected by the writer's strike..but the actor's guild said if the screenwriters were on strike when their contracts are up, they will stike as well.

Doesn't half the cast belong to the actor's guild?

Are you taking off the mailbag until you have season 5 under control? That's fine if you are, I'd rather have a great season 5 than a mailbag. :D

Hi Joe,
Did Joe Flanigan do all the stunts in Doppelganger?
Thanks

Watching all the episodes shown so far this year, I think you guys got off to a slow start then Reunion and Doppelganer were good and great respectively. Then you guys hit the brakes with Travelers, but started back up well again with the excellent Tabula Rasa.

I was very disappointed with Travelers especially how the concept sounded good but the story looked like swiss cheese with all the plot holes in it. You guys don't write relationship stuff well and I hope now you will finally realize it and stop making poor attempts. Larrin was such a stereotypical space-babe who I thought showed no real leaderdhip abilities and I don't know if the lack of emotion was due to the writing or the inexperienced, but beautiful, actress used for the role. A really tough sounding leader who lost her "courage" when she sees a Wraith? Bad, bad, bad.

I hope Gero wrote a better script for the Travelers return in BAMSR.

Everyone criticises or agrees with the movement of Carter to SGA. But aren't we all forgetting the contractual realities of this? Didn't Amanda Tapping's SG1 contract specify that on cancellation of SG1 her character would be shifted to SGA? I stand to be corrected on this, but if I'm right then it doesn't matter how much fans or the creators wanted Carter to stay away, it had to happen, or the creators would be liable for breach of contract.

Paul has warned me that we’re dangerously close to becoming “that crazy dog couple”.

Should Paul say that again, please feel free to share a description of my sister's "collection" to show him how much worse it could be.

As of this moment, my sister has 2 kids, 2 cats, 1 dog, 1 Fahaka puffer fish (and 1 ciclid to keep the puffer company), 100+ tarantulas of various makes and models, 5 scorpions and 2 snakes.

No, she's not an angtsy goth chick. I have, however, nicknamed her "Noah" and have informed her that she's getting a partridge in a pear tree for Christmas.

To all those worrying about the number for Doppelganger... don't forget the itunes snafu that revealed the episode weeks before it aired. That made a dent in things I'm sure. Don't be so quick to be all doom and gloom...

Are your Pugs any good as guard dogs?

Doppelganger's release on iTunes before it was aired may have something to do with the rateings.

Sometimes I think a bus load of emo kids gets dropped off at your journal and gateworld every morning so that they can begin their day again bemoaning anything and everything. Their parents don't understand them, the kids at school don't understand them, Stargate Atlantis doesn't understand them...

You've got global warming, peak oil, peak coal, peak gas, peak sticks for burning, over population, water shortages, obesity and starvation, war, terrorism and those really annoying adds that happen just before the cliffhanger ending to a show. And what do people wail and gnash their teeth over? The fictional goings on of a show that's for entertainment purposes.

Seriously, if the goings on of fictional characters are the thing that consumes and worries them the most, then they should consider themselves lucky. There just seems to be a line that quite a few people have crossed between being a fan of something, and entering a deeply unhealthy place. No show is a one size fits all, and nobody is going to love everything, but you'd think you guys were molesting their pets and pushing their grandparents into incoming traffic with the amount of wailing that goes on from some sectors.

Sorry, I got my rant on. Just the constant stream of negativity you get through your journal momentarily grated. And then on the other side of the spectrum you've got the people that paw through your rubbish and send their knickers in the mail - who the hell would want to work in the public eye?

And as for getting another dog? Life is short, go for it. Just when you go to open the door and you're pushing aside a dozen dogs and wading knee deep through a pile of them to get to the lounge you know you've gone too far. If their food bill is larger than yours - stop. You may run out of money and they will eat you.

Thank goodness we have you to tell us how all the fans feel and what the right thing to do for the future of the show is... oh, wait a minute, I like the current direction of the show and I like Carter and Keller and I don't particularly want to see Weir and Beckett brought back in Season 5. So how does that fit into your carefully constructed demographic?

Some fans will like some things, other fans will like other things; you can't please all the fans all the time and just because you and your friends feel a certain way about the show, sure doesn't make you any more right than anyone else.. and doesn't mean you have any more right to demand that the show be changed to suit your preferences.. or to assume that those preferences are what is best for the show.

I was wondering if you were being effected by the stike currently for writers in Hollywood?

Hello,

I read with dismay that the ratings for Doppelganger were down. I generally TiVo SGA so that I can watch it again later, but would it help if I also TiVo'd the second showing? Can TiVo tell when you actually watch what you've recorded? How are the taping/TiVoing numbers accounted for? I'd like to do what I can to make sure the numbers don't fall any lower. Thanks!

Interesting that, as a dish invented in the UK, crispy duck is starting to gain popularity over in Canada/the US.

We make the pancakes in the UK and happen to be heading over to exhibit at Kosherfest (http://www.kosherfest.com) later this week. If anyone is in NY, please come and say, "Hi" - we're at booth 856. We'd be interested to hear about your experiences with the crispy duck dish and of course you'll get the opportunity to try our pancakes!

Just wanted to say that I was talking to a friend tonight after Travelers aired. She told me this in confidence, so now i'm telling you. Afterwards she told me she felt extremely horny and wanted to jump Sheppard's bones.

I think that's high praise indeed. Don't you? Doesn't that kind of review make you all warm and tingly?

Love your pictures but got scared the other day, jumping from mouth watering food to cute dogs, Hannibal may have started that way!
Just wanted to say well done for allowing the characters in Atlantis to be humanly emotional and although Stargate was more military, it was a bit stiff. The show gets better and better, long may it continue.
