November 8, 2007

Allow me to kick off this entry with a huge thank you to regular TesaJB who sent me an awesome belated-birthday/season-5-pick-up-celebration package complete with: photo of classic car, selection of Vosges bars including a “d’Olivia Bar” which is a unique medley of dried kalamata olives and Venezuelan white chocolate (that I was unable to trick Brad into trying), an assortment of See’s Candies, AND my very own edition of Foodie Fight: A Trivia Game for Serious Food Lovers (which Marty G. was especially excited about). I assure you that they will all be put to good use.

Tomorrow night’s Atlantis episode is Missing, another strong character story that I’ve described as Stargate’s Thelma and Louise - in this case, Teyla and Keller, trapped off-world and kicking ass. It’s an episode that explores the darker facet of Teyla’s warrior persona, and also sets up one of this season’s major story arcs.

When I think back to how this particular episode came together, the first thing that comes to mind (okay, second after Carl’s terrific script) is that rope bridge. You see, Carl envisioned a scene involving a rope bridge and, simple enough, the Art Department came up with a design, it was approved, the bridge was built - and then when we found out the cost, our eyes almost popped out of our skulls. As it turns out, it wasn’t the bridge that was so pricey but the added expense of paying security guards to stand watch, 24/7, to ensure no adventurous teens attempted to cross the damn thing while it was up. It was just one of many surprises that transformed this originally inexpensive episode into a $$$ spectacular.

Another anecdote related to that rope bridge involves the apparently fearless Jewel Staite. When it came time to shoot the sequence in question, Rachel (who was pregnant at the time) quite wisely refused to set foot on it. Jewel, rather bravely (or foolishly, decide for yourself) offered to give it a go for a few steps. Director Andy Mikita assured her that he wouldn’t need much from her. He would yell “Action!” and she would start walking across the scary-as-hell bridge - maybe two or three steps - at which point he would yell “Cut!” and she could turn around and head back to the relative safety of solid ground. Jewel was game. So Andy yelled “Action!” and Jewel started walking. And walking. And waiting for someone to yell “Cut!”. And walking. And walking…past the halfway point of the bridge. What a trooper. Apparently, heights aren’t a problem for Jewel as she performed most of the rope bridge stunts herself including the…well, I don’t want to give it away. Check out tomorrow’s episode and watch for this memorable sequence.

Today’s mailbag:

Sherwood Forest Maiden writes: “ Joe, on the recent showing of SG1 s10 episode with Vala's father (sorry the title didnt show up on the digital service), I really like the way the set dressers decorated the apartment. Especially the lamp with the metal flowers rising from the base. Do you know where the props people got this lamp or was it made 'in house'??”

Answer: I’m fairly certain they bought it - most probably at a flea market. A possible 1 000 000th visitor give-away.

Anonymous #1 writes: “I'll be visiting Montreal in a few months. Any restaurant suggestions?”

Answer: Check out Au Pied de Cochon.

LogicSequence writes: “But could you do me (us fans) a favor in regards to the season 4 set? Could you put in a word to Ivon, or whomever is in charge of it, that the fans would REALLY like to have the actor commentaries return?”

Answer: I’ve mentioned it but, at the end of the day, it’s out of my hands.

Stargazer writes: “ I was curious as to whether you've ever read any of Tad Williams' Otherland series, and if so what you thought of them.”

Answer: Haven’t read the Otherland series but I’ve heard very good things.

Moe Jacuzzi writes: “It seems you're finally beginning to realize the genius mastermind behind fiberglass. Suffice it to say I dabbled in glass and fiber in my youth. My accomplishments surprise even me. Maleficent, no?”

Answer: Yeah, it is something you’d invent. Not unlike lemon cream-filled chocolates. You should be ashamed.

Jenny Robin writes: “During your interview for the deleted scenes I hope you remembered to mention your blog and how witty and charming I am in the comments I write.”

Answer: I did but, ironically, that bit was deleted.

Anonymous #2 writes: “Did you take the Superhero quiz?”

Answer: I did. I’m The Flash. Try to keep up. http://www.thesuperheroquiz.com/

LostCityGuardian writes: “If SGU were to get the go ahead, would you eventually become involved in running it?”

Answer: When SGU goes into production, Brad and/or Robert will be at the helm.

Squall78 writes: “Do you or anybody on the cast and crew like Family Guy?”

Answer: Love it. We’re in talks with Brian and Stewie to come over and do an episode.

Anonymous #3 writes: “How do you deal with negative criticism of the episodes from either professional critics or fan critics who at least write a well thought out and written critique?”

Answer: There are times I’ll agree, other times I’ll disagree, and still other times when I may be unconvinced but give props for a good argument. It really depends on what they say and how they say it.

Anonymous #4 writes: “Please don't bring over Jackson. And please get rid of Carter. Bring back Weir, please. So far this season has been really awful.”

Answer: See, this is a perfect example of a fairly innocuous blanket critique that really tells me nothing except for the fact that the person in question is upset because we got rid of the Weir character.

Vikitty writes: “If, by chance, the winner is a Vancouverite (I know there are tons of readers who are from around here...), would the dinner still be virtual?”

Answer: It weren’t virtual, then many other fans would be deprived the opportunity to eavesdrop on the conversation.

LostCityGuardian writes: “What will you do if the 750,000th visitor posts a message anonymously?”

Answer: I’ll choose visitor 750 0001.

Maggie writes: “Is there really a counter that shows who visits your blog? I need to figure out how to get one of those for mine!”

Answer: Check out www.sitemeter.com

Sokra42 writes: “BTW I just spend the last three days canning. I made Apple Butter, Mango Butter, Apple Jelly, and Orange Marmalade. I'm currently working on Green Pepper Jelly, and Red Onion Marmalade.”

Answer: Red onion marmalade. Intriguing.

Dovil writes: “ If I win I would like to dedicate it to my job…”

Answer: You, my friend, need a new job. My suggestion - comedy writer.

ActingChick writes: “I was wondering how you calculate the 750,000 visitor. Is it the 750,000 person who leaves a comment, or the 750,000 person, who although they read your page, sits quietly on the sidelines?”

Answer: I’ll have to go by comment closest to 750 000 so that I can confirm the winner’s identity.

MrsB108 writes: “Do any of the team member cross any moral lines this season?”

Answer: That’s up for debate. Check out Missing tomorrow night and you tell me.

Another blog posting worth waiting up for. I wasnt that excited about Missing, but you've piqued my interest, and my expectations are now higher. The more so since Sci Fi will be airing Tabula Rasa in the hour before Missing.

As far as Anonymous #4; are you perhaps channelling fans from some Bizarro universe? So far this season has shaped up so well my only concern is that season five has an impossibly high bar to reach. But I'll stick around just so I can be happily proven wrong.

Rope bridges! Those always looked like fun!

Please answer my questions. 1) What's your favorite episode of season four? 2) When are the movies suppose to be compared to the Atlantis timeframe? Is it like Unending = Phantoms, Ark Of Truth = Echoes, and Continuum = Submersion? Thanks.

Happy belated birthday! How old are you? And if you haven't been too insulted by me asking that, I have a couple of questions and would you please answer them? Since the Wraith can live for thousands of years, was Michael the Wraith that experimented on Teyla's ancestors? And can the Wraith tell when a person has Wraith DNA (like Teyla)? Thanks! Say hi to the puppies for me!

Hi, Joe.

Just wanted to update you on the MGM Stargate Poll.

The results now are:

Have you been enjoying this season of Atlantis?

Yes! - 72%
No - 15%
Undecided - 14%

SGA rocks!

Best wishes, Morjana

Forgive the following extreme lack of knowledge then, but does the executive producer actually run the show? Does that mean that you and Paul Mullie run SGA in the same way that they would run SGU? Again, sorry, I really am out of my depth here.

Was the rope bridge a "Binder Original" or did it evolve after the initial script had been turned in? Any chance there's a little nod to Indiana Jones there?

Speaking of classic adventure movies, do you have any favorites?

Enjoy the belated birthday treats!

Uh!!! That I like to see, I love it when things aren't black and white, I guess that's why I like the wraith as enemy, they are of course a menace, but also they have to eat to live (wonder if they really can only eat humans to live), so it's all a matter of survival, and just because you are sitting in one end of this twisted battle is that enough to justify hunting and killing another intelligent race who also has the right to survive.
With the Wraith, they are hungry and humans are food that shouldn't be allowed to develop much or it complicates things(food that bites back?). With the Humans wraith are predators and at the end killing them is genocide really, SO you can't be all pacifist hippy and say..."why can't we all get along!" and offer the wraith some nice piece of toffu and live happily ever after. It's fight or become the daily special.

I would love to see Teyla get really angry and show the extent of her care for the Atosians, and I REALLy can't wait to see the encounter with the wraith from common ground.

Dear Joe, Are we going to know the answer to, "Who's the daddy", to Teyla's baby soon or do we have to wait 'til the end of the season? The suspence is killing me. lol.
I hope you get to answer. Thanks.

Hi Joe,

Question: how come Joe F never takes his shirt off on a episode anymore?
Does his wife not like him doing it on the show anymore?

If it has to do with the squee factor we can handle it.

Hey, Joe, I've never commented before, but I love your blog.

I was hoping you could clarify something for me. What's Sheppard's status now that Carter is in charge of Atlantis? Since she's military, is she now Military Commander?

Also, I have to tell you I'm loving this season so far. I thought you were biased when you said it was the best season yet, but so far, I really have to agree with you.

Cheers,

This is pretty random, but I watched "Tabula Rasa" again last night, and I'm curious about this.

In the scene when Rodney is recording the video of himself, was that David's own camera, one belonging to the studio, or just a prop?

I was finally able to watch Tabula Rasa last night. Highlights were confused Rodney at the beginning of the episode, confused Sheppard near the end of the episode, and still really pleased with Carter being an awesome leader.

At least this Friday I'll actually be here to watch the new ep as it airs =D.

Please remove the Carter intros to the episode previews, since she is not an actual, original Atlantis person.

If you want to get people to watch, promoting her over and over is not the way to do it. Give us Shep. Flanigan is much more deserving of the profile than someone who's been overexposed for ten seasons already.

Yeah, she's so awesome they needed to hire Ben Browder to be the lead on seasons nine and ten of SG1.

Please. How ridiculous. You can't put a woman in charge of SG1 because she's not good enough, but she's good enough to run an entire military/civilian expedition in another galaxy? What a crock!

She can't lead three people, but you want her to lead hundreds of people.

She's warming that seat. She's no comparison to Weir. She's had no scenes so far that couldn't have been handled by Weir or Zelenka.

This is not about Carter being the best person to lead Atlantis. Come on JM, admit it. It's about you wanting to use Tapping's fans to boost your ratings, and it's not working.

Well Joe, finally watched Tabula Rasa (and finally read that blog entry of yours relating to it), and, well, I loved it. Season 4 is 6 for 6 with no major hiccups. Also, I gotta mention how well you guys are handling the Asuran/Replicator war despite the fact that we really haven't seen it since Reunion. Little mentions like the ones in Travelers and this episode really make or break season-long arcs like this. Well done!

As always, here's my review of the episode; give it a read if you have time.

Hi Joe, I'm loving your blog, and enjoying season 4 so far. Being in the UK, we've not seen Tabula Rasa yet, but I have high hopes for it. What we really need, having brought in two new characters, is to have an episode or two really concentrating on building up a new set of team dynamics, so we can see how the newbies fit into the existing team. In that respect I was a little disappointed with Travelers, which while very entertaining was rather light on teamwork, especially as far as Keller and Carter are concerned. It was also McKay lite, which is a major problem for me ;-)
Are there any really good team-building episodes coming up?

I for one have been looking forward to 'Missing'. I wasn't thinking much of it from the photos, but the previews look great.

Teyla's always handled herself with grace, but I do like seeing her pissed off, too. She's a really wonderful character. I did have the sneaking suspicion that this would begin the arc concerning her pregnancy. I'm also looking forward to seeing more of Keller. I still don't feel like I know her very well.

Wonderful anecdotes with the bridge scene. I hope you continue to share these little behind-the-scenes tidbits throughout the season. They are interesting to know.

Curious: Have the actors indicated an interest in directing or been asked to direct episodes?

Question- why are there no Australian or New Zealand people/scientists on SGA ?

Anonymous said...

Leetle bit wonkey here from muscle relaxer (decreptit old war horse here), but I had to say that "Missing" intrigues the livin' hell out of me! I so desperately miss Carson Beckett, but I love Jewel Staite and it looks like she is doing a beautiful job with the material (the writing for Carter has seemed a bit milquetoast as of yet, but I've got my fingers crossed it will get better as time goes by). Anywho, I am very much looking forward to seeing "Thelma and Louise take the Pegasus Galaxy" tomorrow night, that should rock.

Oh, and thanks for the heads up on SGU! Yeah! More 'Gates!!! (Yes, you have us well and truly hooked).

Thanks muchly for sharing your blog with all of us, you're really quite cool, if a bit Rodneyish at times. ;-) Hugs, Joe!!!

This rope bridge sequence does indeed sound interesting...

I've been away trying my hand at stage managing... my college drama group just did a variety show, which included a 20 minute excerpt from Chicago.

It was definitely a learning experience;
Lesson 1: It will all come together at about 3am the morning before opening night.

Lesson 2: When you have 6 singing lead characters, at least 2 microphones will malfunction on each night of the performance.

Lesson 3: Staple gun + plywood = no. Just no.

Was just wondering whether there was a drama group at your college and did you ever got involved? We run several plays written by students every year.

In my ongoing pre-vacation Vancouver research, I've come across recommendations for Capones restaurant & Jazz club on Hamilton St several times... have you ever been?

Hi Mr. M,

Yay for being The Flash, who, in my honest opinion, is the best superhero EVER! ...Or maybe just my childhood hero. Just think, you're selfless enough to give your life to save not just the planet or the universe, but the multiverse! And consider that you can eat all the great food you want and never gain any weight :) :)

Speaking of which, to pick a few Food Network favorites at random, who's your favorite chef(or even TV personality): Emeril, Mario Batali, Wolfgang Puck, Bobby Flay, or Giada De Laurentiis?

Thanks!

About Tabula Rasa, I thought you guys did a great job. I was worried that Sheppard would become even more of a main character this season, and we wouldn't get to see much of anyone else. So, I just wanted to thank you guys for putting in more McKay. Now onto my question. It's possible people have asked this before, but

Why do you think people like McKay so much? And I don't mean like as in he's an interesting character, or funny, but like how people like Sheppard.

And she is a writer, and I keep telling her that she needs to put such conclusions on the back burner for awhile. As a fan i have learned that i need to trust you guys, because you know what you are doing. And also, yes you haven't been able to show alot of Amanda, but come on she has been super busy filming the SG-1 movies alongside of Atlantis and i am sure that she was not always available to be in every scene.

Thanks to blaine nielsen for voicing some common sense. Many people are too quick to judge this season based on the few episodes that have aired so far. Why not wait to rate the season until it has finished? Most seasons are sure to have one or two episodes that are kind of blah, but that doesn't mean that the whole season is a bust. I think, as Joe has been "hinting", that the best is yet to come for S4.

Hey Joe, just wanted to say I'm loving season 4.'Reunion' is still topping my 'favorite episodes of any series' list. 'Doppelganger' is another favorite of the series. 'Tabula Rasa' was not only a great episode but had quite likely the most ingenious teaser I've ever seen. Heck 'Travelers' was my least favorite so far and it was fun. The mess hall scene at the end being on my 'best team moments' list. Good plots, good interactions, love the team's relationships still deepening, oh, and Carter is great. Really good chemistry with the cast. I wasn't even the biggest of Sam fans and I was wary of changes on my favorite show but gotta say, this was a good one. Carter is great on Atlantis.

Smaller audience? You must be seeing only the Live+Same Day numbers. According to what I've read, when you take into account all the people that DVR the show and watch it during the next 7 days (aka Live+7 days), the numbers show that Atlantis is not only HOLDING the audience of the previous season but also, in fact, it might have increased a bit.

Regarding the poll, it shows that 72% of the people who voted are enjoying the show, not just 30%.

You can't count the Undecided as people who are happy/unhappy. They would've voted for Yes/No in that case.

Bottom line is that, according to that poll, only 15% of the hardcore audience is unhappy. If you want to give that poll credit and believe it represents the whole hardcore audience out there, I'd say that the hardcore audience is pretty happy overall:
72% happy
only 15% unhappy

I agree to an extent. I think what also sets the Wraith apart is that as far as we're aware, at least in canon, they've done little to find another food source nor have they tried getting along with the other beings in the galaxy. They've proven to be untrustworthy on more than one occasion. They have no qualms in going after even the most defenseless and shown how little regard they have for other beings. They look down on humans the way we look down on cows...as lesser beings that are nothing more than food.

The blurring of the lines come in when team SGA crosses the line in defending themselves. It's understandable on one end, but on the other what does it make them when they're using a retro-virus to make Wraith human in order for them to be fed upon? It's a 'what else can you do' type of scenario because it's came down to a battle of us verses them.

What makes it easier is when a Wraith is shown to be a little better than the rest of his kind. I'm hoping to see more of that in future episodes such as a group of Wraith who discovered a way to survive without feeding off of humans or even their own kind. At least it might offer some hope for the future of Wraith and humans alike.

I do hope we see more blurring of the lines with the Wraith as far as are they completely evil or are they as complex as humans? I really hope that team SGA doesn't explore something similar to the retro-virus. It was unsettling to see how easy they came to a decision I thought was morally ambiguous at best.

Is the game a real food-fight game? How does it work?
Speaking of birthdays, I turn 21 tomorrow. Yippee!

I think that adding Carter to Atlantis was a good idea. She really adds some unique humour to the show. I am talking of the Carter-Mckay humour. I just LOVE it!

A few months ago I read about an interview where Rachel Luttrell said that "we" haven't met Teyla's guy yet. Does this mean he won't be shown until season 5? Or will we find out who it is somewhere in season 4?
Is he Athosian or from Earth or..?

Well, have a nice day

Big rope bridge stunt, eh? I can't help but flash back to the end of a very popular adventure film...

"Hang on lady, we going for ride!"

1. Just got a brochure from my favorite fruitcake baker.
https://collinstreet.com/
(They price CAD and ship to Canada.)
Light batter, no nasty citron, lots of raisins, pineapple and PECANS!

2. One of our local reporters agrees with you about the un-inspired WGA signs.

Adding oomph to strikers' signs

Web Posted: 11/08/2007 03:06 PM CST

Members of the Writers Guild of America, striking for their fair share from DVD and other digital media sales, have been in full force in Los Angeles and New York in recent days. They're getting their message across with two simple words: On Strike.
On Strike?

This from writers who bring us all those zingers on late night television?

Surely you can come up with something that's, let's say, a bit saltier. Where's the passion for the pen, people? Don't hold back. Quip it good!

Still, it looks like you could use a little help. So how about these?

•We love the movies, we love TV

We want more moola from DVDs!

•We live to work, we live to write,

Bring it on, we'll fight, fight, fight!

•Hey Jay Leno, what do you say?

Keep your donuts, we want more pay!

•2, 4, 6, 8

We say it's time to negotiate!

•Two bits, four bits, six bits, a dollar

All for the Guild stand up to Holler — wood!

Thank you for a wonderful season so far, and Tabula Rasa was just amazing! My fiancee and I live in different states, so we call each other and watch "together" on the phone. We're honeymooning in Montreal--any romantic dinner suggestions?

Hi Joe,

can Vala and Daniel shippers hope that Tomin will die heroically at the end of The Ark of Truth, so Daniel can comfort Vala and Teal'c is going to tell them what happened on board Odyssey when they were stuck in time dilation field?

I always hesitate to post because I can never think of anything spectacular to say. However, in light of the current run for 750,000 I thought I'd give it a go. Still nothing spectacular, I know, but I'll work on it! :-)

Looking forward to tonight's episode.

Thanks for mentioning it Joe! I know you can't make it happen yourself, but i thank you for passing along the information, as always we appreciate your help.

I don't know if 'out of my hands' bodes well for the topic, but you've done all i could ask for, so again, thanks. So lets talk color schemes. I'm thinking overall a light blue for the box art, and a little blueish-purple for the menus! Am i getting ahead of myself? ;)

Special Feature Idea:
'A Dinner Out With Joe Mallozzi'.

I saw that rope bridge on the preview for the episode of "Missing". Kudos to Jewel for walking across it

Hey Joe,

I know Tabula Rasa was last week but only saw it couple days ago. Taken me this long to get over just how fabulous an episode it was.

David H was fantastic. I was completely floored by his performance. Tapping was great - nice to see Carter capable of command even when she doesn't remember that's what she is - proves that it's part of who she is. And Zelenka? That was just so brilliant!

Ronon's gradual exasperation with Shep was wonderful - giving Jason some kiddie practice? *grin* Listening to my boss talking about his kids, that's exactly what it's like...loved it!

Virtual dinner?!?! Oh my. Permission to wibble? Coz, I have to be honest, the idea of trying to stay sensible enough to hold a conversation with you is somewhat scary. In a good way! And would involve intelligence along the way - I'd get starstruck! *giggle*

Looking forward to "Missing" - I'll letcha know what I thought...

Glad your eye is getting better!

Hope the fur-babies are good - Lulu taken the crown for Most Mischeivious yet?

Til later,

Dreams

Yeah, it is something you’d invent. Not unlike lemon cream-filled chocolates. You should be ashamed.

I most certainly am not. In fact, there is an old Roman legend that cites the Jacuzzis as the first to create raisins. I'm proud of my heritage.

That was a very lovely thing to say - consider the cheque in the mail!

Unfortunately as a philosophy graduate the only job I'm qualified to do is to ask people why they would like fries with that. But the good news is that now I've hit 30 there's an opening in the office for the role of Embittered Harpie which sounds promising. Apparently I get to snarl at all the twenty-somethings for daring to have "ambition" and "hope for the future". Plus I get to secretly drink whiskey out of my office monogramed coffee cup.

But at least no job I've had has required me to walk agross a ravine on a bridge made out of string. So major props to Jewel for that one!

Joe! First time writer here. Theres probably no need to approve this comment as I just wanted to drop a little note. Heck, I may even start writing semi-regularly.

Just sent (and subsequently received back) an e-mail from John Scalzi. Good to hear you've been in contact with him, as I only bought his books because of the recommendation from you and Sir Gero on your blog.

Good luck with the prep for season 5, heres hoping it lives up to everything Season 4 has been so far!

Regards,

James

Question abotu the metaphysics of Stargate. Is the soul immortal 8in the SG universe, or does it disappear upon death if one has not ascended? The line in "Abyss" always intrigues me when Daniel says "we are not talking about your life, we are talking about your soul" to Jack. Just curious what might have happend to Jack's soul had he not lived, and refused ascension.

Btw, since your the Flash, did you ever watch the 1990 Flash series? I was briefly infatuated with the Flash due to that show lol.

Later,
Royal
