November 9, 2007

Oooh, you guys are in for a treat. Carl Binder (Yes! THE Carl Binder!) has agreed to do a post-Missing guest Q&A on this very blog. So what I’m going to do is gather up your Missing and miscellaneous Stargate-related questions (ie. How is your three-part toilet episode coming along?, What is Joseph Mallozzi really like?) through Saturday, send them his way Saturday evening, give him most of Sunday to come up with his clever answers, and then post the responses on a special “Carl Binder Guest Blog Entry” Sunday evening.

Also, I’m sure you’ve all heard by now that Stargate Atlantis has been nominated for a People’s Choice Award in the category of Favorite Sci-Fi Show. More surprising than the fact that we were nominated is the fact that this category actually exists in the first place. Since when? Although, in all fairness, there were a number of other categories that seem new to me including “Favorite Reunion Tour”, “Favorite Threequel”, and “Most Meticulous Animal Guest Star in a Musical or Variety Series“. Nevertheless, it’s nice to see the genre (and, of course, our series) being recognized. If you’d like to support the show and vote for Atlantis, head on over to -

http://www.pcavote.com/pca/index.jsp

By the way, I am genuinely surprised by all of the excitement generated by my proposed virtual dinner prize for the 750 000th visitor to this blog. When I came up with the idea in passing, I never imagined fans would react so positively. As a matter of fact, I’m suddenly feeling the pressure of having to prove myself a delightful dinner companion. Well, at the very least, I suppose I’ll have to dress up for the occasion. For all those interested in chowing down on some virtual crispy pork hocks and/or squid ink fettuccine - it’ll be a while. We are presently ticking toward 675 000.

Another quiet day at the office marked by plenty o’ phone calls (finally got in touch with Mr. Shanks), budget talk, and a Day One Mix of Kindred II. I have to say that with Kindred I, Kindred II, and The Last Man, Atlantis’s fourth season closes out very, VERY strong, offering up a touching and bittersweet mix of character moments that I know fans are going to love. The ending of Kindred II in particular is incredibly moving (Carl was in tears. I was, of course, touched, but not overly emotional although the eye infection I’ve been battling may have made it seem like I was crying. Marty G., meanwhile, was not present as he is in Vegas - uh - scouting locations for next season - but would have been weeping as well. Paul, as usual, was impassive - the cold-hearted bastard). No doubt that Kindred II will have fans reaching for the tissue or their significant other’s sleeve while Last Man will have them jumping up, bug-eyed screaming: “HOLY F*&O$2@ S*$#!!!!!”. Heh heh. Stay tuned.

Today’s mailbag:

Fingolfin high king writes: “Have you every met a Stargate fan while at a restaurant?”

Answer: As a matter of fact, yes. Earlier this year I was at a local restaurant when the waitress introduced herself as, not only a fan of the show, but a regular reader of this blog.

Elizabeth writes: “1) What's your favorite episode of season four? 2) When are the movies suppose to be compared to the Atlantis timeframe?”

Answer: 1) Hard to say as we are still finishing episodes. Right now, my favorites are Tabula Rasa, BAMSR, and Harmony. 2) The events of Ark of Truth take place before season four. The events of Continuum - anytime.

Mackenzie’s Momma writes: “I worked on my craft project tonight a very wonderful 'sheep song' shirt want one?”

Answer: I don’t even know what that is. Sounds great though.

LostCityGuardian writes: “Forgive the following extreme lack of knowledge then, but does the executive producer actually run the show? Does that mean that you and Paul Mullie run SGA in the same way that they would run SGU?”

Answer: The showrunners run the show and, yes, Rob and/or Brad will hold parallel positions to Paul and I on SGU.

Charles Schneider writes: “Was the rope bridge a "Binder Original" or did it evolve after the initial script had been turned in?”

Answer: It was a Binder Original. A very costly, over-budget Binder Original.

Shawna writes: “If you had to choose any Stargate race other than human to be, what would you pick? Also, would you rater be that in the SG universe, or in your real life?”

Answer: Other than human? Hmmmmm. Hard to say as most of the races SG-1 and the Atlantis expedition encountered were human. Hmmmm. Maybe one of those Foothold aliens with the illusory disguise devices so that I could masquerade as Lindsay Lohan and get into all the good Hollywood parties. Also, given the choice, I think I’d prefer to remain in my real life than exist in the SG universe. Unless the Stargate universe gets House and Survivor.

Scifan writes: “Are we going to know the answer to, "Who's the daddy", to Teyla's baby soon or do we have to wait 'til the end of the season?”

Answer: Soon. Soon.

Anonymous #1 writes: “What do the others in your office think when you start snapping their pics and posting them on your blog?”

Answer: Depends who it is. On the one hand, you have my writing/producing partner Paul who is very camera shy on account of that international arrest warrant. On the other hand, you have Marty G. who has never met a camera he doesn’t like (and, let’s be frank, hasn’t loved him back).

Anonymous #2 writes: “Please remove the Carter intros to the episode previews, since she is not an actual, original Atlantis person.”

Answer: Sure thing. Allow me to put that on my To Do List, right after “record my gospel cd” but well before “start my edible lye soap business”.

Anonymous #3 writes: “…She's had no scenes so far that couldn't have been handled by Weir or Zelenka.”

Answer: By that brilliant logic, one could argue that all of McKay’s scenes could have been handled by Zelenka while all of Sheppard’s scenes could have been handled by Lorne. Also, I don’t think Weir or Zelenka would’ve fared as well leading that rescue op in Reunion.

Cyn writes: “Teyla's always handled herself with grace, but I do like seeing her pissed off, too.”

Answer: Ooooh. Then you’re going to like Missing.

Joshua Meyers writes: “I love the chemistry of Larrin and Sheppard, can we have more of that?”

Answer: BAMSR.

Jenny writes: “Speaking of which, to pick a few Food Network favorites at random, who's your favorite chef(or even TV personality): Emeril, Mario Batali, Wolfgang Puck, Bobby Flay, or Giada De Laurentiis?”

Answer: Simply based on personality, I’d go with Anthony Bourdain.

SMB Books writes: “What is your Cookie Monster email account?”

Answer: Coooooookiemonster@yahoo.com

Jim from Jersey writes: “I missed the d'Olivia bar when I ordered.”

Answer: I strongly urge you to continue to give it a miss and try the Barcelona Bar instead.

Thank you for big mailbags! Long live big mailbags! As long as they don't interfere with season 5, of course.

Is it too much to ask for 3 answers in a row? If you're not going to be a showrunner, would you be roped in as a SGU writer then, in the same way that RCC is not an SGA executive producer but writes for you guys?

Hey Joe,

Just out of curiosity which side of the writer's strike argument are you, writer turned producer that writes, on?

I love Carter in Atlantis so far. I think that her past experiences with McKay make for some very interesting exchanges. Plus, I love how she has the military background that allows her to relate to the military personal in a way that Weir could not. (Not that I disliked Weir, but I think that the story line to her leaving made up for her being gone, it was wonderfully done.)
With that being said, when will it be decided it Carter will be back in Atlantis in season 5?

If the winner is a non-english speaker will you translate the dinner conversation.
If this is the second time this is posted it is because the first was sent on the tail end of the comment dated the 8 nov.

Hi Joe, thanks for answering my question about the lamp. I love flea market shoppping, it was a great find by the crew.

Meantime, I am working on my dinner menu just in case I am the the visitor nearest the 750,000th visit.

Have great weekend. I intend to do nothing, but you can bet that someone will make me change my mind!! :S

Hey Joe (and Carl)

I'm about halfway through Missing.... and I LOVE every minute of it so far, I can't WAIT for the season to come to DVD so I can stea...er.. buy it! (right now I own season one plan on getting two and three for Chrismas)

Question for ya guys, What (or who) made you guys think of getting Teyla really mad? She's erm.... uh... rather good and whipping me on the beach with those bantos when she is in a mood. What made you guys think of her ticked off? (not to mention make a entire episode with her really moody(which I actually like to see every now and again))

Great job so far!

Lots of love
~Tey
PS: can ya pass on a hi to the little guy (Rachel & and family) from the kitties of Atlantis? Thanks

I thought it was an Athosian named Kanan?

May I make a suggestion? I think you should really make a FAQ entry, and have it linked on the side or top. I am sure you must go so many questions repeatedly, and may have answered once awhile ago, so to save yopurself of re-answering the same questions, you can make a FAQ.

That's awesome about the People's Choice Awards. I might actually watch them now.

Have any other episodes ever made the writers/producers cry while watching?

Cool, a Guest Q&A!

"Elizabeth writes: 2) When are the movies suppose to be compared to the Atlantis timeframe?”
Answer: 2) The events of Ark of Truth take place before season four. The events of Continuum - anytime."

What! Don't tell me you guys wrote another Moebius episode! Orthat at the end of the movie someone wakes up and it was all a dream! That would not be cool!

"Also, I don’t think Weir or Zelenka would’ve fared as well leading that rescue op in Reunion."

I don't know, I think Zelenka would have done just fine, as long as they were fighting the Wraith with crowbars.

BAMSR sounds really good.

Here's a question for the Guest Blogger Q&A: Please answer this question. When is Stargate Continuum going to be released on DVD in the US? An exact date please! (If possible) Thanks!

Why with your good looks and your wonderful sensitive personality, you didn't go into acting? and who would be your favourite author?

Joe said: Unless the Stargate universe gets House and Survivor.

We saw Keller reference Survivor in Missing, so you're halfway there. :)

Loved the episode tonight, this season just keeps getting better and better! Best season ever! Props to you guys!

Oh, btw, it's a good thing those of us who read spoilers know what was up with Teyla's test results or that'd be a crappy way to leave us hanging! *g*

Anonymous said...

Oh! The other nominees are Battlestar Galactica and Doctor Who! BSG is ok, but not a big favorite since I never know when it's on, or when it'll be starting again, and I only watched it because Jamie Bamber is hot. But SGA and Doctor Who! It was a tie, but I voted for SGA because you're the one who pointed it out. Now had I see it on a David Tennant board, if they advertised enough to interest me, I would've voted differently.

Is it true that at one point the Wraith Scout Ship was to be featured in a shot (As hinted by the ship design pics)?

Please pass on my appreciation to Carl for those Batman Villians. I absolutely loved 'em. Didn't Shelley Winters play Ma Parker?

Also, this has been bugging me for a bit. Why do the Atlantis members remove their patches when they go off world?

Promogirl said...

"This is my least favorite part of Survivor." Favorite line of the night. Favorite moment? Seeing one of the bad guys enter frame left with a sucker in his mouth. Nice one.

You mentioned that Jewel did a lot of her own stunts in this episode. How much of the rope bridge sequence was her?

And how much did Rachel love being such a badass in this episode? I imagine she was relishing it to the hilt.

For the record I'm loving Carter and Keller. This has been my favorite season of Atlantis by far. I hope Keller will be a regular next season... although I certainly wouldn't mind seeing Carson back as well.

You know, you mention that moving end a couple of blogs ago and I'm already very upset and bordeline crying, I'm still not over Sunday and still can't hear a Scotish accent without saying out load: "Carson!!! *insert tear*. Yes I am terrible when it comes to sad stories and avoid them because life it's sad enough already (aren't I in a happy and uplifting mood)

so ANYWAY! I can't wait for this episode and for the misery you are bound to inflict on me this comming season finale.

When I said I liked a pissed off Teyla, you said I would like tonight's episode. You were right:)

I enjoyed the episode a lot. It looks like Rodney's becoming a better shot, too...after four years. LOL

It was great getting to know Keller and how in so many ways she's opposite of Teyla. I loved how Keller started with self-doubts and wound up with far more strength than maybe she even knew she had. It was a really great revolution of her character.

I'm intrigued with finding out what happened to Teyla's people. I have a feeling that'll be a surprise and it appeared to end with Keller telling her she's pregnant.

Will we see Keller learning self-defense with Ronon because of this adventure of hers?

Thornyrose said...

Ok, it's becoming impossible to rate the shows in season 4. Just finished watching Missing, and once again I'm bowled over. This is the Teyla episode we've been waiting for ever since she was introduced. Teyla the leader, Teyla the warrior, Teyla the expert on human nature(with her around who needs Heightmeyer anyways?). Enjoyed the contrast of Keller's reactions to those of Teyla. And thank you for not introducing a B story that would have reduced the time actually spent on the main plotline.
Now for a few questions. Do we see the Athosian question resolved this season, and if so, when? Can we look forward to a season five episode centered on Teyla? Is Ronan going to take up Bolokai hunting? Assuming the Athosians are found, will they be returning to "New Athos" or will they be settling on yet another world? Will we be seeing more of Teyla's relationship with her people, given her long absences in their lives? Was there any technical reason for Teyla hanging onto her makeshift fighting stick instead of keeping the gladius-style shortsword from one of the dead Bolokai, which would have seemed to have been a more suitable weapon than her knife.
Looking forward to Sunday's postings, and hope that your guest commentaries are going to be an ongoing idea; not that your own comments and insights in any way lack in information, insight, and entertainment.....

thank you for the many Carson references this season. i count 3 or 4 so far, and that means a lot to Me!!!! Are these the subtitle hints about Beckett that you and the guys were talking about around the time of Sunday
Hey Carl--I really enjoy your work since you have come on the show, and Joe seems to talk highly of you. I was wondering what was your favorite part that was written and executed well on the screen?? Is the WGA strike going to affect you???? seeing as last we heard you were joining the picket lines. Hope it goes well and is over quckly

My thoughts on “Missing”

It was nice to have a Teyla centric episode that showcased more layers and devotion to her people. We saw her warrior side and shades of her darker persona. It must be devastating to loose all of her people. I was happy to see her kick butt and take charge of Keller.

That being said I this has to be my least favorite episode. Not because it was Teyla heavy on contrary I adore her. It was very slow going and I kept looking at the clock.

If Teyla was capable of taking out several of the bad guys...why not take out the two guarding the gate?

With the close connection to Atlantis, the Athosians had no way to contact them during whatever crisis occurred?

I've been on the fence about Keller and she proved to be way too whiny and annoying. I wanted to smack her sometimes and we got more background history on her as a 'newer' character than what's taken seasons for the main team.

I dug the mystery of what happened to the Athosions of which I think ties into upcoming eppys with the Kindred 1 and 2 which is cool. .

Plot A with Keller and Teyla just wasn't balance enough with a minor plot B.

Look forward to next week's.

Continuing Season Four's strength, "Missing" was riveting. Even though I don't usually find SGA's women as compelling as the men. Kudos on a job well done.

You led us to believe Teyla would be "dark", and yet I found her simply a realist who did what had to be done and didn't let herself get sidetracked. Good for her, it's about time Teyla got to show her stuff.

No offense, but I could be more excited about the virtual dinner if I weren't so wary of the things you eat. ;)

Cheers,
RebeccaH

"Missing" was wonderful. I'm right in there with Keller. I don't know how to fight, and I probably wouldn't have brought a weapon either. And I would have had to be pushed across the bridge. First medavac flight in a P-3, when they were demonstrating my parachute to me, my only comment was "Senior Chief, if you have to be the last person off the aircraft then you had better plan on pushing me out."

Having done survival training, I have eaten some rather unappitizing things. When you're hungry enough...food aversions just disappear. Teyla can get mighty pissy...don't want to be on the other end of that stick when she's swinging it, that's for sure!! Another home run.

Anonymous said...

Missing was incredible! I loved the rope bridge scene and Teyla's fight scene's were awesome. How many of those did she actually participate in? Or did the pregnancy preclude her from filming any of them?

Anonymous said...

Is the disappearance of the Athosians resolved later in this season or do we have to wait until season 5?

Also, "Missing" totally rocked my socks!!! I've always loved Teyla, but seeing her handle Dr. Keller, a complete non-combatant, in the situation they were in really brought home why she is the leader of her people (notice the present tense there, I'm not giving up on the Athosians). Teyla is right up there with Sam Carter in my book (Sam has always been my favorite character).

Anonymous said...

Will there be any Athosian related stories in Season 5?

CGerrans said...

Hi, I just wanted to say that I enjoyed tonight's episode. Though in the same breath, I did find myself distracted from it a few times. I liked how Teyla kicked butt (she's good at that), but I was a bit disappointed with Jewel (Dr. Keller). I've seen here in other things - most notably Firefly and Serenity - and it was a bit disappointing to see her hesitate so much in this episode. I hope her character grows past this :) I guess I'm curious mostly about who Teyla's baby daddy is, and who the hell that mystery guy in "Missing" was. Def. not Athosian and didn't seen like a Genii either...Excellent episode overall.

Oy, I've been so busy, I just realised I haven't stopped by to say that I freakin' *LOVED* "Tabula Rasa"!!! Which was a relief, because I actually had to BUY THE DOWNLOAD in order to do my column because our power went out while I was away in Chicagoland for a week! Arrrgh! (Er, not that I was worried about liking it or anything, I was pretty certain it would be excellent, which was why I was so annoyed at not being able to watch it live it in the first place. And it was only about two bucks, and I made a whole wopping buck-fifty at the garage sale my neighbor and I had today, so hey, I almost made the cost back! XD You know, some days it literally just doesn't pay to get out of bed ... What am I saying? That's *nost* days for me! XD)

Anyway, if someone asked me what my fave ep was so far this season, I'd be really, *really* hard-pressed to answer.

As for "Missing"? Not bad, not bad at all, especially considering I've never been overly-fond of Teyla. *Ducks rotten tomatoes*

Don't worry, I would never request she be written out (hah, like you would listen even if I did -- as well you should not!), as I respect that other fans adore her, and would never want someonne else to miss out on something they love for my sake. (*Hint-hint* to some of the "Anonymous" posters out there.) And it's not like I *hate* her, she's just my least-fave charrie after Liz.

I feel a little sorry for the John/Teyla shippers. Feel a lot more sorry for Teyla, though, under the circumstances.

Nice to see Rodney's got a bit of competition in the whinging/panicking department now with Keller around. (Oh, as if I would be any better under those circumstances ...) And yay for Rodne's not runing, instead watching their backs with the arrow fire!! :D

Glad you mentioned the bridge, Joe -- I was actually going to ask if that was pre-existing or if you'd had it made. (Darn it, you killed my q for carl! Hi Carl! *waves*) What, you writers couldn't all just camp out by the bridge and take turns babysitting it, and saved the budget? Oh, I suppose there's some silly law saying you had to have "professional" bridge-sitters watch over it...

Loved the warrior sucking on the lolly-pop -- he about slayed me just by doing that! *G* (How do you spell his people's name, anyway?)

And loved the John/Rodney Batman discussion (*Lets out a McShepper squee* I so less-than-three my fanboiz!) "What?" seems to be Ronon's catchphrase this season ....

You better hope I don't get the 750,000th comment, Joe, because I'd make us try traditional Athosian fare! ;)

So I maybe watch the show primarily because Sheppard is pretty and it's hot when he gets beat up? But tonight's episode may have changed that. This season has been pretty sweet in general, but tonight was AWESOME. I am SO HAPPY to see the women having depth and developing as characters and being badass, but not in the empty, stereotypical Strong Woman way. Just, each realistically relied on her own experience to make decisions and fight and survive. And they didn't even have to rely on their sexuality, or men's lower expectations of them, or any of that stuff that totally undermines female characters as heroines. Yay!

My question for Mr. Binder: Could you please lead a "How to Write Women in Sci-Fi" workshop?

It apparently is but that hasn't been actually said yet. In "Missing" Teyla mentioned the guy for the first time ever and merely hinted about their relationship.

Kids ruin sci-fi and merely dumb it down.

Joe, why are you sometimes so curt to people who express their dislike of Carter (or Weir leaving, etc.)? I'm not talking about the people who are rude first--I've seen more than a few people who've left comments that made me cringe with embarrassment--but I've also seen some polite, well thought out questions and comments that you've responded to in the same tone as the horrible ones. I understand being protective of a character you've helped create and I applaud it--in fact, I think it would be much worse if you weren't! But please keep in mind that a lot of us who don't like Carter (full disclosure: like myself) are trying to and are asking questions about her because we love the show and are trying to understand her place in it. I sincerely hope I haven't offended you with this comment as I have a lot of respect for you and really enjoy reading your blog.

*Raises brow* So Keiko and Myles having a baby on Star Trek dumbed it down, huh? Rather than adding a new and interesting facet to both the characters and the portrayal of life in a sci-fi universe in general? Not that I'm saying they *have* to keep the kid on the SGA, but I, for one, trust that it won't spoil the show if they *do*. (And it should be noted that I am saying this as someone who doesn't even want kids herself!)

Snark!

I once had a person tell me that another fan had manipulated Carter for Weir in a picture because it was the SGA "original cast". I never got an answer to my query of why Ronon was in it then as he replaced Ford.

I think Ronon is my favorite male character. I love his sense of humor. And he's hothothot.

I really liked "Missing". I hope this means you all have hit your stride. The arrow references were hilarious. It was nice to actually see some return on all the promises of more Teyla.

I really enjoy reading the French answers because more and more I can actually understand them!

I just wanted to say that I really enjoyed Atlantis tonight- it started JUST when I walked through the door home from work, and was the perfect way to kick back and relax. The bridge scene you teased was awesome and I was still surprised when Keller slipped. This episode was a great way to endear the viewers to Keller (although I've enjoyed her from the start, even though I sorely miss Beckett), and give Teyla a great time to shine.

I've been a huge fan of Jewel since her rainbow haired days on Nickelodeon's Space Cases. I discovered Firefly because of her!! So I was pretty thrilled to see her join SGA. My question tonight is whether or not you've seen Space Cases, or if Jewel gets poked fun of at all for that on the set.

This is a question for Carl Binder.

I had always considered Teyla a "conservative" sort of person, not the type to go off and have marital relations with some guy she wasn't married to. Was I mistaken?

Thank you for taking the time to do answer fan's questions!

Anonymous said...

Oh! I loved the episode, I believe Teyla wanted to slap keller a couple of times, I bet she could have got away with it, blame it on the pregnancy and hormones LOL.
I KNOW people are going to complain about keller, But I think she was compleately entittled to freak out, she is a doctor not a warrior princess!

OK that a side, I LOVED Teyla going medieval on those crazy people, but then I felt bad because maybe they just were hunting and gathering around after they found the abandoned place and how would you like to get axed to hell by some crazy lady, Oh well! It was very entertaining though. One of my fav things was Rodney's reaction to the Arrows raining on them LOL.
Now we are just missing Teyla and Sheppard getting hit by one (since Ronon already did.)

I DO have a question for Carl:
I, like Ronon have no clue what Sheppard and Rodney were talking about, so my questions is what was that all about? and what made you come up with that particualr bit

I loved it because it shows yet another character development moment with the guys just been friends and goofing off.

Yeah... Sometimes I get that moisture like thing in my eyes too.

I was actually fairly impressed with tonights ep. To be honest, all week I was trying to figure out how to digest the idea of a Teyla-Keller centric episode. But I think it worked out rather well.

The play between Teyla and Keller was realistic, not to unlike conversations I've had with other people about inner strength, etc.

The sound of semi-distant P-90 fire was a much welcomed relief. I mean, you knew they would get rescued, but still!!

Loved how the episode wrapped up too. *That* situation in particular couldn't have played out any better. Till next week!!!

I think it would be fun if the virtual dinner were accompanied by virtual dinner pictures. Hopefully the winner would agree to that because it would make it THAT much more entertaining!

I think Missing is another winner! It was an excellent change of pace and atmosphere. My heartfelt thanks to everyone involved for the strong, intelligent female characters portrayed and played by talented, intelligent women. It's a breath of fresh air.

I am very much looking forward to the evolving story arcs in the upcoming episodes. How many days until Friday?

'Missing' was exceptionally good. Go 'gurl' power! ;)

I see you guys wasted no time to delve into Keller's background and that's commendable. Too bad it seems too difficult with certain character.

Teyla was in her true form here: A warrior princess :) She shows that she can put Shep in his place just pick a time and date. Her leadership and compassion and fearless has no boundary.

I look forward to the follow up on the Athosians and Teyla's pregnancy. She seems to have her plate full.

Well done and this is the best episode in sometime and possibly the best character centric episode.

Hi Joe,
Just thought I would compliment you on missing... Great episode. They have all been good this year but I loved the character driven aspect of this episode. This episode is a perfect example of why I like stargate, good storytelling all around. I love the way that although stargate takes place in the scifi genre, the characters are the focus of the stories, not the technology. You guys do a great job of connecting the audience emotionally with the characters, making it so the we care what happens to them and can forget that it is just a television show. I think that the fact the fans care when you remove or replace a character like Weir or Beckett is just a testament to the skill of your team and the quality of your production. Keep up the good work.

Also- happened to watch citizen joe the other day on scifi and even realizing that it was a clip show- it is honestly one of my favorite sg-1 episodes to watch. Even when you guys do a clip show you develop the characters. I actually cared what happened to joe and his wife at the end... Would be fun to see that character back sometime.

I was hesitant about 'Missing' but I ended up liking it quite a bit. It's just so nice to see a show where a woman kicks all kinds of ass with nothing but some sticks and knives while remaining fully clothed in sensible attire that includes the most awesome leather jacket I have ever seen. I also enjoyed Keller quite a bit (which probably means less, as I've never been a Keller-hater, but there you go).

Sheppard calling Teyla and Keller "kids" smacked of O'Neill -- and I'm also not one of those who see multitudes of Jack-isms in John -- but if that's the only real gripe I have, job well done!

How did the idea for an offscreen love-interest for Teyla come about (besides the obvious necessity of some manner of romance)? I thought it was a really risky move at first, but the more I think about it, the more I like it.

Joe, I hope you have a crowbar handy. You may need it to get Mr. Binder's head in the door on his next trip to the studio.

Missing was simply a GREAT episode. Quite probably my favorite in 4 seasons.

The next time someone complains about men not being able to write for female characters, I would simply ask the asker if they saw "Missing".

I have to second that.

I am not a fan of fight movies (don't even watch the commercials for them), but I loved this episode. Several months ago, I asked a question here about if we were going to see some type of explanation of why Teyla was such the warrior (because stick fighting won't help much against Wraith). All of those questions were all answered with "Missing".

And for Keller - well, being one of those women, I identified with her and cheered when she attacked (and then kneecapped) the man ready to kill Teyla. Why so bloodthirsty? Decades of women in movies standing there with the gun on the bad guy and the bad guy getting the gun without a fight.

One last thing about Teyla ... her attitude in several places reminded me of her reaction to a 2nd season incident. When Ronon killed his former commander in cold blood, her reaction was in keeping with the Teyla of last night - not the one we have seen most often who would uses words like "aerolisize".

While writing this, I've been trying to think of a question for our guest, but I will have to leave that to others. This episode answered the ones that I had.

season 4 = brilliant. im sure its a complex equation behind that answer, so the entire SG family should be praised for their maths. missing was a brilliant change of tempo, will there be more like it in the back half?

joe seems to think that kleenex better prepare for the season finale of SGA, does someone die? is it the baby? can u poop any scoop?

Charles Schneider said...

I can't believe you wouldn't want to live in the SGA universe due to show concerns. After all, having seen the history of SG1 unfold we know that The Simpson's do exist within their universe (maybe the other shows do to).

New dummy show idea: RDA comes back for a brief cameo to jump universes via the gate and turns on a TV to try and catch The Simpsons before gating back to his own universe. You can file it just below your lye soap idea.

It seems like fans really like to send you stuff. Have you ever gotten anything really strange before?

For Carl:

Teyla...Rachel...can do all that? I've never seen Teyla so intense and so perfectly capable of handling herself. She is not only a courageous fighter but a good strategist with tactical skills and leadership abilities. True, she wasn't leading an entire army, but her actions in "Missing" leave no doubt that there were good reasons why she was the leader of her people.

Now, Rachel? Thank God she got pregnant because otherwise we probably would have never seen her power as an actor. [See my question below.] Her incredible, focused performance in "Missing" was striking compared with a lot of the work she's done on the show prior to this.

Also, pairing up Teyla with Keller accentuated the differences in their characters. This was also a good way to describe Keller to the audience. (Not to sound bitter, but I wish we'd had a chance to see Beckett speak about his background. Although maybe later this season or next, that might happen.?.)

Teyla has lost two good friends with the death of Heitmeyer and Elizabeth's uncertain fate. Bringing another woman into the field with her allowed for a little bonding at what must be a very difficult time for Teyla, who may still be grieving, and might explain why she gets a little close to Keller and doesn't show a whole lot of sympathy.

So, my question: Was Rachel's pregnancy the reason that "Missing" was written, or was a 'Thelma and Louise' episode already on the agenda?

PS: Tell Costuming that I love Teyla's coat.

Utopiquement, si la Fox et SciFi acceptaient, est-ce que cela vous plairait de faire un crossover entre les deux séries?

Anyway, thank you so much for the spoilers...it actually make the episodes taste better !

Anonymous said...

Just a few questions... I don't know who would be better to answer them...

Is there any chance of you guys using Atlantis as a semi-character more? The city is amazing, and I'm sure you guys could find a way to kind of make it a character without it being cheesily sentient.

Also: do we ever get to find out how strong John's ATA gene is/why it's so strong? I mean, it played a big part in why he got picked to be on the expedition and then it got kind of... dropped. Some great possibilities there.

Does Carter make any kind of mistakes or bad judgement calls at all this season? I think that would make me warm up to her a bit. The problem I have with her I think is that she can be too perfect. Flaws are what make a character interesting to me.

One more: Are we ever going to have a recurring lower level scientist? All of the characters the show focuses on are all top tier (understandably) but part of the reason why I liked Ford was because he was obviously still learning. I'd love to see more of McKay's...erm... mentoring side.

One request: Please, for the Love of all things hot, post a pic of Jason without the dreads when you get one. I must see, yes. Also? more of the Flan on his knees please. :D

Missing = GREAT kick ass Teyla episode!! very happy with her character's direction. Trying to puzzle out why Keller's whining is annoying me so much yet Rodney's was always tolerable. After all, Keller found some inner strength too and I don't think she's a coward either. I'm guessing its still the lingering Beckett comparison (do appreciate the continuing mentions)- field surgeon vs hospital doc, frankly there IS no comparison so I'm going to stop.
Overall a really good character episode (kudos to the Batman villain scene but the laugh of the otherwise grim episode was the lolly-sucking Bolokai!!) I'm guessing Teyla's Athosian friend is the father and that was *really* naughty leaving that hanging :) I expect we'll find the Athosians later this season and find out more about Wraith-worshipping humans, which, from the Bolokai, and Ronan & Teyla's reactions before, is the lowest a human can fall. I loved Missing! Not quite Thelma and Louise, but more like helping Jennifer become Thelma. (Or is that Louise?)

Not to go all feminist (because the scene itself looked great), but why did you choose to have the guys come to rescue, rather than having them arrive just a few minutes too late after the girls defeated those freaky tribesmen-whose-name-escapes-me-right-now?

And whose evil idea was it to end the episode before Keller says what's wrong? Was this a Mallozzi move? Or are is Binder going Dark Side on us?

MISSING questions for Carl
1) Even though Teyla was visiting her people, the Pegasus Galaxy is still a dangerous place to visit. Why no weapon?
2) A totally inane question, but are you guys watching too many TV ads? We got Ambien mentioned in "Doppelganger," and now Restless Leg Syndrome in "Missing"? I feel like the ads are saturaring the show (please, please, no Cialis!)
3) Ground squid? Is that like a land shark? ;)

Meanwhile, loved the Batman exchange with Rodney and Sheppard. Poor Ronon. One of these days he really has to turn the table on that pair.

Hi Joe!!! Hi Carl!!! Great to have you on the blog!!! I loved that we got a glimpse into Keller's backstory. Thank you for that. I also loved that her character would react as I think, at least myself, would react under her circumstances. I am not good with unsecured heights and am particular about what I eat. My question is "Who, in Stargate Atlantis or SG-1, has been your favorite character to develop or see grow over the years?" and my second question "Who's character are you most excited about their growth in the episodes to come?" Thanks a whole bunch! Looking forward to future episodes and the SG-1 movies!

Jen

PS Joe-How's your eye doing? Hope you are feeling better. :)

Anonymous said...

Hi Joe,

Loved Missing. I really liked Teyla's character development. Some of it was quite a suprise - as far as the leaving the guy behind thing. Most of it was great, everything you'd expect to hear about Teyla and then a suprise about the boyfriend. So, hat's off to Carl's cool idea. Though I did find Keller a bit whiny (I can't figure out how to spell that this early in the a.m.) However, you have to whine to overcome.

My only question in this ep and the previous (ok..i've lost track - maybe not the previous, but there was another w/o her)...Carter's absence is odd. It seems as if Sheppard is in charge and making all the decisions to go out and rescue Teyla/Keller. And usually there has been Hammond or O'Neill to go through in SG-1 and Weir to give the green light Atlantis...so the absence of the head of the city has been strange...Any rational on that? Time or AT only contracted for x amt of eps...

Thanks!
Virtual dinner sounds way cool!

Well Missing at the start I wasn't really liking it too much, but it got better as it went along. And left a lot of unanswered questions (which is a good thing, and helped add to the episode)

I hope we see Nabel again, it was set up quite nicely that we will. And would be a good arc/character development.
The ending, cruel :) Yeah I know about RL in real life but I was still hoping they'd say something more conclusive here, will the next episode start off fairly close to this one? Felt that way, and will be a good pay off more then likely.
The reason why the tribe people (again, can't remember their names) were there so soon after the Wraith had supposedly attacked them, that wasn't resolved either. But I felt as I said it added to the episode.

Also liked hearing about Teyla's relationship, and how it was announced. It's good to hear these characters have these relationships which we don't have to know on screen all the time, and she seemed to really care about him the way that she was talking about him, but in a subtle way. I felt that was really well acted on her part.

But yeah, Keller was a bit annoying in this episode but it's the first time I've felt it. Her development helped though and you sensed she'd do it, I do like her character though and hope to see her more in season 5.
On that note when will you, or the public find out about cast situations, as in who will be on the show next year?

But overall, quite a good episode, developed and opened stories very well imo. If every question had been answered by episodes end it probably wouldn't have been as good, and was part of what made it seem more significant. 8/10.

I have a "Missing" question for Carl! Teyla doesn't live full-time with the Athosians, but she immediately recognizes that Nabel is not one of them. It's not clear whether Nabel actually infiltrated them or simply convinces Teyla that he did, but neither ought to be possible: the Athosians should recognize even faster than Teyla that he's not one of them, and Teyla should know that, so he can't have infiltrated them! Did I miss something in the episode that would explain why Teyla would believe he could infiltrate them, or am I supposed to think that Teyla and Keller are both so distressed that they fall for it? (Or that the Athosians believed that this guy was one of them?)

Anonymous said...

For three years, people were asking for Teyla/Elizabeth episodes. Even the actresses said they wanted that. You didn't deliver.

Now you deliver Keller/Teyla, and it's nothing but an opportunity to show how unsuitable Keller is for an expedition where she faces danger from all angles at any time.

Elizabeth would have been much better in this episode. Teyla wouldn't have been rolling her eyes and looking like she wanted to punch something if it had been Elizabeth.

Keller is a waste of space. Please save us from this child masquerading as a doctor.

I still think SGA needs an archaeologist/historian type character. It just seems odd that they would be exploring new worlds without one. She/he would be a significant asset when meeting new people/life forms, studying civilizations and when everyone is deciding how to proceed when these occasions occur. (whether she/he knew Ancient or not...but I'm sure they would..lol)

It seems that Daniel Jackson was sometimes the voice of reason when the military wanted to run roughshod over people/life forms. There's no one on SGA that has a background or a point of view that an archaeologist/historian would have. Teyla is sometimes the voice of reason and calmness, but her background in leadership and martial arts is not the same thing.

The character of Carter would probably think it was a good idea after working with Daniel Jackson. Daniel could bring someone over that had trained with him or suggest someone that he thought highly of. I could see the IOA ordering it, as they stick their fingers into everything.

It could bring up some angsty stuff if she(yeah...a female would be nice) kept herself aloof and everyone thought she was a spy for IOA. (could be a whole plot later on why she's aloof...as in her last SG-1 group were all killed and she doesn't want to get close, etc).

I could see Sonya Walger or someone like her playing this part. Also, it would be nice to have someone from Great Britain on SGA, as we don't currently have anyone from there.(that the viewers know)

I think this type of character would be vital for new discoveries and exceedingly helpful when recording information about new civilizations/peoples. IMHO (or maybe not so humble ;~P lol)

I know I mentioned this before (July 8), but I have been mulling over the idea since and think it's valid.

Hey Joe and Carl!

Missing was a great episode!! I love seeing Teyla kick-ass like that! One thing that it made me wonder (and previous episodes have done this as well), those touch-sensitive tablet computers that they carry around and use to exchange data (McKay always has one in his backpack)-are those supposed to be human computers brought with them from the Milky Way like the brilliantly placed Dell computers ;-) or are they an Atlantis invention that the team found and now use? Just curious...

Can't wait for more great eps, have fun and good luck with breakin season five...I can't wait! lol

Thanks for the opportunity to ask Carl a question Joe.

Hi Carl love you’re writing, your work is very diverse.

When you wrote Missing and decided to included the rope bridge, which was frightening just to look at, did you think-

1/ What can I put in to the story frighten the bejesus out of Teyla and Keller?

2/ I’ll try and make these two women look in control and able to cope with what ever gets thrown at them?

3/ Hey budget what budget? What the hell it’s only a bit of rope and it looks good on screen.

My question could only be confined to the rope bridge which I have seen a picture of as I haven’t seen Missing yet (I'm in the UK).

I have read that Keller twists her ankle! Please no more women with weak ankles. It really is annoying, it seems to be generally in the Sci-Fi genre, please resist the temptation.

Pauline

1)Was the strange look Sheppard gave Teyla at the end of the episode a foreshadowing for a continuing dark storyline following Teyla?

2)Would the audience be remiss to assume the conception storyline is as simple as indicated in Missing?

Anonymous said...

I really don't get the people who think that this episode showed that Keller is weak and whiny and unqualified. Would they prefer that characters were perfect all the time? It means a lot more to me that she pushed her own limits and was resourceful given her experience than if she'd been completely prepared to handle every unexpected obstacle. It also gave Teyla a chance to shine as a leader who's able to control her own frustrations and feelings while she helps others find the strength they need to keep going, even in a situation of such overwhelming emotion as the disappearance of her people.

I also have to disagree that the rescue comes off as men rescuing women. I think it's very much team rescuing team.

Anonymous said...

I loved this episode for a multitude of reasons, but here are my big two:

1) Both Teyla and Keller had changed by the end of the episode, and those changes are clearly going to have an impact on the rest of the season. That was beyond satisfying to see.

2) The guys didn't come in like heroes on white horses to save the day, but rather as their team members to help clean up a mess. I loved that in every single instance, in their own unique ways, Teyla and Keller held their own, faced down their demons, swallowed their grief and/or fears, and did what they needed to do to survive. They made me damn proud.

(And the smaller things were excellent too - the sucker-sucking Borakai; the banter over screen villains from Sheppard and McKay).

And to match my two things I loved, I have two questions:

1) When you sat down to write this script, what were the character goals you had in mind from the get-go, and which evolved as you wrote?

2) And less seriously - a side effect of the most often prescribed drug for restless leg syndrome is hypersexuality. (Also gambling - was there something riding on the Batman game? ;)) Did you know that when you wrote in the reference?

Thank you again for an absolutely fantastic episode!!

Well i watched Missing and i just gotta say..............I LOVED IT,i was almost SQUEEing at the top of my lungs...Rachel and Jewel done a brilliant job, could you tell them that.
The fighting scenes are the best i've seen yet, they were breathtaking,we had angst, whump and plenty of it,Teyla kicking some major butt,Keller being all insecure but coming good in the end saving Teyla,Teyla being all pissed,it's good to see a different side to Teyla,i like this new side to her alot....And for the kiling of that guy,i don't see how she had any other choice and she knows it,it's kill or be killed right!

Anywho fantastic job on all that were involved!

To Carl:

Awesome kick ass ep. Loved seeing Keller realize she has what it takes to survive.

MY QUESTION:

At the end of the ep I thought OH GREAT we are finally going to get to find out that Teyla is pregnant but instead you ended the ep with Keller saying we need to talk. Why did you end it like that?

Are you taking Evil lessons from Joe? ; )

OK, honestly can't think of an intelligent question and the lollipop -sucking-bolokai has been mentioned enough, ha! So I'll just say thanks for the great blog and for any cool writing/producing anecdotes you happen to have to throw at us. I half read as a fan of SGA, half as a curious writer-wannabe who really enjoys the behind-the-scenes peeks. The guest appearances are just too wonderful, as are your own awesome comments. thanks!

Is Alan McCullough going to be writing more episodes in season 5?

Is there going to be a break between the airing of episodes 10 and 11? Do you know how long it will be?

"Missing" was such a great episode! I can't wait to find out what happened to the Athosians, and more about Teyla and Kanan!

I'm sorry, Joe, but I've found a flaw in the whole Teyla's boyfriend thing.

If this guy is supossed to be her crush, mentioned in Sunday, then you have made a big mistake, I'm afraid. In Sunday, the doctor one she was talking to (can't remember her name) about the crush knew the guy in some way. She also offered to get someone to drop hints for the guy.

Now, first, I can't really see her knowing an Athosian. I also can't see her being able to get someone to drop hints for an Athosian. The way you introduced the whole crush thing suggested it was someone on Atlantis, and now that you're saying it's not, I don't really believe you. I think this may be a writing error.

If this guy isn't Teyla's crush from Sunday then you better be showing more about this and better reveal the identity of who she had a crush on. I just wanted to point out a big flaw in the boyfriend thing.

Hi. So Joe don't take this personally but I love Carl. Adore him. Love him. Well, I think you get the idea.

My single, stand-alone, favourite episode of Atlantis ever still has to be Before I Sleep.

So, my question to Carl is this: you consistently write strong episodes for female characters, 'Missing' showcased Keller and Teyla...if Joe gave you free range and you could write an episode for any female character in Stargate history (Atlantis or SG1) who would it be and why?

Unknown said...

I can't say that I really liked the darker side of Teyla. I thought the episode was alright. Nothing special for Stargate. We need some more centric episodes for the Ancients and Wraith.

For Carl:

Thanks for being willing to share Joe's blog to answer our questions.

1)Joe has told us why and how he got into writing. I'd love to hear your history about how you ended up where you are.

2)Which character do you find easiest to write? Which is the hardest?

3)Do you see entertainment moving toward internet based "webisodes" vs. television? How would that affect the way you write?

4)How do you remember the character personalities and details of character histories so that you don't mess up on continuity when you write the next episode?

Thanks to Joe for giving Carl the opportunity to share his knowledge and insight with us.

Teyla was one of those characters that snuck up on me. I thought when she was first brought on it was for the sole purpose of having awkward uncovincing UST with the lead inbetween standing about in Athosian sackcloth boob tubes and micro-minis, flicking through wig catalogues. But thankfully between the writing and RL’s performance Teyla turned into a three-dimensional character that just has such inner strength, dignity and dry humour that you’ve just got to love her. Or hey, she’ll beat the crap out of you. And this episode was the perfect character piece.

It was great to see Teyla almost anew again – not only thrown into such an extreme situation but being able to view her almost through Keller (because god knows that would have been me, but with less with the weak ankle, and more with the weak bladder and sobbing). Really enjoyed it.

Hi, Joe. Thank you, and Carl, for the post-mission q&a on "Missing."

Carl, I have a few questions:

1) Is Keller a civilian doctor (ie., not a military doctor).

2) Why does Keller wear tennis shoes?

3) Do YOU know why Sam wasn't wearing dog tags in "Tabula Rasa?" (Sorry, had to ask.)

A comment...loved the lollipops. I kept wondering how Teyla was going to use them as a weaon (the old stick-in-the-eye trick), and was very pleased with the Bola Kai tyring to find out how many licks it takes to get to the tootsie pop inside.

LOVELY, wonderful, fantastic episode Carl - Thank YOU so much!

Best wishes, Joe and Carl!

Joe, About Missing, LOVED IT!! Teyla is fast becoming my favorite character. I like the back and forth with Keller. Teyla's looks say it all. Also loved the "mothering" she did with Keller. I just have 1 request. Whoever gets to write the story where she tells Shep, make it good. We know Ronan will just say O.K.

Iris said...

"Missing" was fantastic! This is the first episode where I really understood why the Athosians would choose Teyla as their leader. She exhibited her martial talent, but also her leadership talent. My favorite scene was when Teyla insisted that Keller would not give in to torture. Keller herself didn't believe it, but Teyla mader her believe it.

I also loved the McKay-Shep banter about Batman. Who is the major Batman fan writing those gems in? And how much encouragement do you need to include a line referncing the "Battusi"? (no idea of the spelling on that one)

All aorund, a great ep. Hope to see more angry Teyla in the future!

sam has made mistakes over the years/seasons, and if one watched the 10 years of the show, they'd have seen it. but the thing is, for those that love to bash sam, this would be just another piece of fuel for the never-ending fire. some fans say she's too perfect while the other group says she's a screw up and doesn't deserve her promotions. which is it, because she can't be both?

sam's a great character. :)

Short and sweet from me tonight you'll be pleased to hear. :o)

These thoughts are more for Carl than for you, but feel free to read and inwardly digest as you see fit. :o)

I really enjoyed 'Missing' some really nice bonding, and kick ass scene. Who would have thought Teyla could be so scary! Must be those pesky hormones. ;) The episode story in itself didn't feel like a stand alone, more as a set up for things to come, was that the way it was intended? It cerainly felt as if this was the seg to what's coming up for the remaining eps and this was like the teaser. I have to say I was a bit shocked with Teyla going from 'hunted' to 'hunter' with the Bola Kai, shocked in a good way. I think it just goes to show how something like that can cause you to turn in on yourself. Was the infirmary scene at the end the beginning of something (no not that way) between Shep and Teyla, more angst and edginees that we will see later on? My spidey sense was tingling with that scene that he really didn't know what to say to her or get through to her at all, and even if he did, there was not a chance in hell that she'd listen to him. So, I wondered if we were likely to see more of that?

Oh so many questions. LOL. I love episodes like this that make me think on a number of levels. So pass on my thanks for that. :D

Oh and before I go... the doc is definately a female version o Rodney, but it was good to see her changing over the course of the ep and that she finally stepped up to the plate when it counted.

*hugs*

Yes that was me being short and sweet. LOL talking of sweet whose idea was it for the Bola Kai to eat the lollies? :o)

Missing - not terrible, but not as good as I had hoped. Can't really get worked up about the Athosians but liked what it did to Teyla. And as for Keller. The least said the better, yes you could argue that she was out of her depth but five minutes at the end does not make up for 40 minutes of whining nonstop, if I'd been Teyla I would have tied her up and left her for the monster! Seriously Keller's character needs to move on and quickly, at the moment her weakness is mkaing me think too much about Beckett's strengths and how much they are missed. Please can we have him back.

Good comments! I agree, it would be cool to find out more about John's ATA gene, how strong it is and why.(maybe one of his grandparents was an Ancient that descended)

I love Carter, even though she's pretty close to perfect. But I can see how it would make a great story if she actually failed and had to deal with that. Real angsty for her if she made a decision that had some red shirts die.(Especially if Rodney was actually right and she was wrong) And when I say red shirts, I do mean classic red shirts...ya know...the characters we don't really know or care about. I hate losing characters I know and like/love!

Hello Carl!

Love the episode, so here's a question for you:
What's Joseph Mallozzi really like?

What do you think of his obsession to chocolates, food, dogs and super villans.

If you could choose a super villan name for yourself...what would it be?

Looking forward to hear from you!

Questions for Carl:

First of all, Missing was a great episode! KUDOS! Rachel shined and I even tolerated Jewel in this one!

Questions, Concerns, Observations:

1. Why did Teyla lie to John at the beginning when he asked her about having a hot date?

2. Why would Teyla hide a serious relationship from her friends?

I was hoping that this wasn't the route that the writers went for Teyla's pregnancy. I've always seen Teyla as someone that has thought things over and over again before she acts. Having Teyla mention a more serious relationship with someone is not what I find out of character, it's hiding it from her friends and then carelessly getting pregnant.

We've never seen Teyla with any man beyond John and Ronon and she has maintained her distance from them. Not until recently have we seen Teyla open up physically and emotionally with John and Ronon.

3. Will this have serious consequences in the way it's going to affect her relationship with the rest of her team members and her role as part of the team?

4. Will we learn how her people will react to her pregnancy? Is this something common and acceptable in her culture?

I realize that there are still pieces missing to this plot, and that you can't reveal much, but still, what I've seen so far is concerning. I've always seen Teyla as one that wants and is willing to give herself to the one she loves but I've also beleive that when she makes that choice it will be one for a lifetime. And something about this relationship just recently kindling to more than friendship doesn't strike me as Teyla choosing to get pregnant was the way that she intended it to go. I'd rather see her loose it for her people, go dark to save the lives of those in Atlantis, but not make poor choices with something so simple as protecting herself when going into a relationship as she has. That is just irresponsible and so poor in taste for a character as strong and as morally driven as Teyla. I was really hoping that her pregnancy would at least be viewed as either something supernatural or perhaps even something relating to a decision based on her people's customs or even as part of her responsibility to her people as leader, but certainly not as something that was unexpected, unplanned and something that she would find shameful enough that she will hide it from her friends. That's not the Teyla that I've known for the past 3 years.

Mr. Binder, am I missing something to this plot? Is there more to this that has not been explained? Or have the writers clearly intended this to be the way for Teyla's pregnancy and the results of this will be revealed as the season progresses? Mr. Mallozzi shared not too long ago, that there will be a character that will react much of out character, is he referring to Teyla and does this pregnancy play a part in that role?

I am a John and Teyla shipper. So, some may view these comments as my reaction towards the news in Missing. But please, this is not in any way an attack on what may or may not result for this ship as this story unfolds. First and foremost, I love Teyla's character and I find that she's been one of your strongest and consistent character of the show. I'm guess I"m hoping that this season does bring us some further light into her character in a way that only strengthens her role as part of the team and as an individual all on her own.

Thank you!

Camy

Missing is my least favorite episode this season.

Keller was so wimpy and whiny that I almost turned the TV off halfway through the episode. She's a doctor, for crying out loud! How could she EVER be capable of doing surgery if she's as spineless as this? Your writers might consider watching an episode of Lost for some tips on how a doctor performs under incredible stress.

On the plus side, Teyla did kick some butt in this episode. Though it did seem a little odd that you would do an episode like this when Rachel's pregnant.

My favorite part of the episode ... the bridge. Very, very cool bridge, Carl.

Hi Mr. M,

Thanks for your response :)

I enjoyed "Missing" quite a bit -- it was nice to see the female leads step out on their own and prove they can carry an episode.

Also good to learn so much about them in a manner that didn't come off as: "let me recite my life story because fans should know more about me." We learned what we needed to learn relative to the episode, revealed as the action dictated.

The fact that the episode relied more on dialogue than SFX to tell the story also took me back to a time before CGI when the script and the acting had to speak for itself (ie. before Star Wars 1-3). A pleasant change for a sci-fi show, although it took my brain a bit to get a adjusted to the lack of big explosions.

Loved the Sheppard/McKay banter, as lately it seems that McKay has been doing a really good job of getting on Sheppard's nerves (ie. Lifeline/Adrift). Nice to know their friendship is still going strong.

And the lollipops -- great idea :)

Two questions (if I haven't missed Mr. Binder's mailbag): are we supposed to assume Sheppard went to Carter to approve the rescue? This is the second time he's taken off without us seeing him go upstairs for the "ok."

And are the Bollo Kai human or humanoid?

Best,
Jenny

Why would you suppose a low tech society such as the Athosians have reliable birth control?

Camy wrote:

2. Why would Teyla hide a serious relationship from her friends?

Because it was too new to bring out in casual conversation? Because she wasn't sure it would last? Because she didn't want to be teased? Because she wasn't sure herself how she feels about it? Because it gave her a thrill having a 'secret love'?

Anonymous wrote:

Teyla clearly stated the 'kindled' part of the relationship was new, so it obviously wasn't the man Dr. Hewston was referring to.

Mr. M & Mr. B.,

I really enjoyed "Missing" and am eagerly awaiting the unraveling of this story line.

Okay so I'm back with my thoughts - and questions for Carl! - on Missing.

I enjoyed the episode.. not necessarily one of my favourites of the season but definitely a good episode and nice to see such a focus on Teyla for a change. I loved seeing her "in command", as it were, without the boys around, relying on her own savvy and survival skills to get herself and others out of trouble.

It was interesting to learn more about Keller too and to see that not everyone who signs up for the expedition is necessarily used to or expecting or comfortable with off-world thrills and danger. It reminded me somewhat of Zelenka's extreme nervousness, even when surrounded by burly marines, when he was first going off-world in Duet (since when he has become the experience off-world veteran we saw taking part in the rescue mission in Reunion). I could definitely sympthasize with Keller here as I suspect I'd be just the same - scared of the bad guys, no idea how to fight and noooo way you'd get me on that rope bridge! :/

So, questions for Carl:

Sorry to start with a nitpick but one thing that occured to me (and Joe, this kinda relates to Travelers too) is why the rescue party couldn't locate Teyla or Keller using the subcutaneous transmitters? This technology was referenced in Common Ground, where the team was able to detect Sheppard's transmitter from the jumper and know definitely that one of the lifesigns was his. So why could Sheppard's team not identify Keller and Teyla amongst the many lifesigns on the planet this way? Do the handheld scanner/LSD's not look for/detect the transmitter signal? (And if that's the case, if I may ask Joe, how come they couldn't detect Sheppard's transmitter signal from the jumper in Travelers and know which ship he was on? Out of range?)

Carl, you've mentioned in a previous interview about basically being able to creat Keller's history/backstory etc in this episode... at the beginning of Missing, it's made clear that Keller has rarely been off-world and has yet to meet the Athosians. The implication in First Strike seemed to be that Keller had already been on Atlantis for some time (since at least before the events of Sunday) before she was asked to fill in as Chief Medical Officer - how long, in your personal imagining of her history, would you say Keller has been on Atlantis?

In the final scene in the infirmary, Sheppard looked a little uncomfortable at Teyla's expression of her desire for revenge. This anger and withdrawal is something we've never really seen before from Teyla, who has always seemed almost unflappably balanced. It was a quick moment but one that seems to hold some significance/foreshadowing for the team dynamic in the future. Any comments/thoughts on that?

And finally, not so much a question as a thank you for the reference to Rodney's prescription for "Restless Leg Syndrome".. that made me giggle for longer than is probably necessary, or healthy. :D

Oooh.. P.S. That was a really evil cliffhanger for the casual viewer who is not involved in fandom and doesn't know about Teyla's upcoming storyline! What a place to fade to black! They're gonna be spending a week wondering what terrible affliction has struck down Teyla! :D Is Carl making a bid for Joe's crown as evil mastermind? :D

If you're still taking questions for Carl:

Thanks! Great episode, btw.

I haven't posted here before (that I remember?), but I had to stop by and give a big hat-tip to you, Carl and everyone else involved with this episode. I love, love, LOVE that you gave Teyla and Keller a fast-paced, action-adventure, "Butch Cassidy" type episode focused on just them. It's really rare for women in sci-fi to get their share of the buddy-movie adventures, and I wanted to congratulate you on doing a fantastic job.

I'm also really gratified to see that Teyla has a love-life outside of Atlantis; knowing that Rachel's pregnancy would be written into the show, I was hoping with crossed fingers that you wouldn't go for the standard sci-fi "magical/weird/alien" baby plot that's been done so many times before. I'm very happy and gratified to see that it looks as if Teyla will have to deal with a normal pregnancy (well, as normal as things get in sci-fi); it opens up wonderful possibilities for the character, and I'm really looking forward to seeing where it goes.

I really enjoyed some of the fight sequences in 'Missing' (don't get Teyla really mad) and had a couple questions related to fight scenes - How long do some of the fight scenes typically take to choreograph? How much of the 'fight' description is provided by the writer/director versus the translation of the stunt crew?

Hi Joe

"Unless the Stargate universe gets House and Survivor."

In "Missing", Keller says something like "That was my least favorite part of Survivor." when Teyla offered that glop from the underground squid creature, so obviously they get Survivor and The Simpsons (Jack's *favorite* show) in 'gateverse. It's not a big leap to figure they get House, too. (Hey, Keller limped through the entire episode!)
